Abstract:China’s massive wave of urbanization may be threatened by land subsidence. Using a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar interferometry technique, we provided a systematic assessment of land subsidence in all of China’s major cities from 2015 to 2022. Of the examined urban lands, 45% are subsiding faster than 3 millimeters per year, and 16% are subsiding faster than 10 millimeters per year, affecting 29 and 7% of the urban population, respectively. The subsidence appears to be associated with a range of factors such as groundwater withdrawal and the weight of buildings. By 2120, 22 to 26% of China’s coastal lands will have a relative elevation lower than sea level, hosting 9 to 11% of the coastal population, because of the combined effect of city subsidence and sea-level rise. Our results underscore the necessity of enhancing protective measures to mitigate potential damages from subsidence.

Abstract:Land subsidence was first observed in Shanghai nearly a century ago, in 1921. Land subsidence attributed to groundwater extraction has been severe in China and is still occurring. Recent subsidence and associated earth fissures occurring since 2000 in three principal regions—the North China Plain, Fenwei Basin and Yangtze Delta—are introduced, and historical subsidence in these areas is briefly summarized. The subsidence-affected area in these regions with cumulative subsidence greater than or equal to 200 mm is more than 90,000 km 2 and covers 22 provinces (cities), which include intensively developed and densely populated areas. Earth fissures accompanying the subsidence create significant geohazards; more than 1,000 earth fissures have been identified in the North China Plain, Fenwei Basin and Yangtze Delta. Effective land-subsidence-monitoring networks, that include continuous global positioning system (GPS) stations, repeat GPS and leveling surveys of geodetic benchmarks, InSAR, borehole extensometers, and groundwater observation wells, have been established in these three subsidence-affected areas. Mitigation measures and administrative means have been implemented in some areas, with good results in the Yangtze Delta area.

Abstract:Mining subsidence is a direct source of environmental geological disaster in coal mine. In eastern China, lots of land submerged into water or became polder land, because of underground mining and its relatively flat terrain, and high groundwater table, which lead to land use condition and land scape changed extremely. A coal mine in Shandong Province was selected as a case study, according to specific geological condition, natural terrain condition, and buried depth of ground water, combing with the mining plan, an integrated approach based on subsidence prediction and GIS was proposed Mining subsidence prediction was conducted by using integral probability method for 4 mining stages, which are 2015, 2020, 2025, and 2076, respectively. Furthermore, land use evolution and its impact to human were quantitatively analyzed under GIS platform. The research indicates that: 1) farmland was decreased from 11748.70 ha to 4237.42 ha, which means only 63.93% of the pre-mining farmland disappeared; 2) Water area increased from 447.46 ha in 2009 to 9347.82 ha in 2076, most of which come from farmland and construction land; and 3) construction land decreased form 2038.44 ha to merely 1018.06, it is estimated that 73 villages were influenced, 100 thousand people may lost their home because of mining subsidence disasters. The proposed method could reflect land use evolution and its impact to public caused by mining subsidence, in high groundwater area. The results show that the water area and polder land caused by mining subsidence was the most significance mining disaster in eastern China, which should draw enough attention by land use planner and decision-making department.

Abstract:Land subsidence, referring to the vertical sinking of land surface, is a significant geohazard posing serious risks to security of infrastructure, natural resources, built environment, and businesses in numerous places worldwide. Using deep learning approaches combined with more than 46,000 subsidence data, we predicted global land subsidence based on 23 environmental parameters. The generated global map of land subsidence covers historically documented and new subsiding areas. We estimate that more than 6.3 million square kilometers of the global land is influenced by significant subsidence rates. That includes 231,000 square kilometers of urban and dense settlement areas and a population of nearly 2 billion. The model revealed a positive correlation between the intensity of groundwater abstraction and the subsidence rate. Our results offer new insights regarding potential hotspots of land subsidence and provide the information required to devise necessary action plans and develop effective policies to mitigate this growing challenge worldwide.

Abstract:Excessive extraction of groundwater has caused severe land subsidence and earth fissures in the Southern Yangtse Delta, China. Based on field data, the temporal and spatial distribution of land subsidence is investigated and the causes for earth fissures are analyzed. The areal distribution of the land subsidence is closely related to the cones of depression in the main exploited aquifers. The compaction of a hydrostratigraphic unit depends on its mechanical behavior, thickness, compressibility, and the piezometric level changing. The primary subsidence layers in Shanghai have been the first aquitard before 1990 and the third confined aquifer since then. But the second aquitard unit was the primary subsidence layer in Changzhou. Earth fissures, trending in several directions, occurred in the Husu tectonic zone. They were mainly caused by differential subsidence and horizontal displacement that resulted from tensile stress and shear stress in units. The majority of fissures in the study area are tensile.

Abstract:Land subsidence, an insidious and gradual geological phenomenon , presents a latent threat to future urban development and socio-economic progress. Beijing City, renowned for its high population density, has encountered significant challenges associated with land subsidence. In this study, we leverage time-series interferometric synthetic aperture radar (time-series InSAR) method to analyze the spatio-temporal patterns of land subsidence in Beijing. Furthermore, we quantify the contributions of natural and anthropogenic factors to land subsidence. Our findings reveal that land subsidence primarily occurs in the plain area of Beijing, exhibiting an average rate of −5.6 mm/year (Positive values indicate uplift, while negative values indicate subsidence.). Notably, several large-scale subsidence centers are identified, with the maximum subsidence rate reaching an alarming −232.7 mm/year. The assessments indicate that geological factors, specifically fault activity, account for 33 % of the observed land subsidence, while human activities contribute to the remaining 67 %, with groundwater overexploitation playing a prominent role. The insights gained from this study provide a foundation for understanding the causative factors behind urban land subsidence and can aid in the formulation of effective intervention policies targeting this critical issue.

Abstract:Shanghai city has been suffering land subsidence caused by overly exploitation of ground water since 1921, which is a serious problem for this coastal city with altitude of 2.2–4.8 m above mean sea level. The largest cumulative land subsidence amounted to 2.6 m in the downtown area. Measures to decrease the ground water exploitation, change the pumping aquifers, and increase aquifer artificial recharge have been used to mitigate land subsidence since 1961. It is necessary to develop a proper numerical model to simulate and predict land subsidence. In this study, a decoupled three-dimensional (3-D) finite element land subsidence model including a 3-D ground water flow model and a 3-D geo-mechanical model was developed to simulate the 3-D deformation of the aquifer systems in the center area of Shanghai. The area of downtown Shanghai is 660 km2, with 10 million inhabitants, dense high buildings, and 11 metro lines. The simulation spans the period from 1979 to 1995. Two different assumptions have been tested on the side boundary, i.e., precluding the three components of the displacement, or assuming a free-displacement condition. The distribution of calculated land subsidence and horizontal displacements in different aquifers was analyzed. The computed vertical displacement fitted well with the available observations. It has been verified that the two different assumptions on the lateral boundaries in the geo-mechanical model caused different results just limited on nodes close to boundary. The developed 3-D land subsidence model is reasonable and can be used to simulate and predict 3-D movement of aquifer systems in the center area of Shanghai, which could provide scientific support to local government in controlling land subsidence and differential movements of the land surface.

Abstract:For the construction and safe operation of major infrastructure in coastal cities, the impact of regional land subsidence that has occurred or is slowly proceeding deserves attention. Previous studies have mainly focused on the surrounding land subsidence caused during construction or operation, as well as the superposition effect of land subsidence caused by groundwater extraction. However, research on the different impacts of damage due to land subsidence in the construction and operation of urban infrastructure needs to be carried out according to the actual geological environmental conditions, reflected in parameters such as the soil properties and common loads. Numerical simulation cannot fully reflect the details of reality; however, it can avoid the influence of other conditions to focus on different factors influencing land subsidence and thus highlight the contribution of a single factor influencing land subsidence. Therefore, in this paper, we adopt field measurement data and carry out a numerical simulation analysis of different influencing factors. First, taking the Ningbo Jiangdong subsidence center (now located in Yinzhou District) as an example, area growth, cumulative subsidence and the occurrence and development of the subsidence rate of a typical urban subsidence funnel area are analyzed. Then, taking the Ningbo Chunxiao–Meishan area as an example, based on the physical and mechanical characteristics of the main soil layers in the coastal reclamation area, a numerical analysis of the self-weight/backfill and surcharge consolidation settlement of the soil layer (considering the water permeability/impermeability of the bottom surface) and a numerical analysis of the nonuniform settlement caused by pile foundation engineering are carried out. Finally, the Ximenkou–Gulou area is taken as the analysis object. Numerical simulation of metro tunnel pipeline deformation is carried out considering uniform/nonuniform settlement. The results show that the comprehensive prohibition of groundwater exploitation is beneficial to slow the land subsidence rate, while the sedimentation of silty clay in Layer 4 (muddy clay) is the largest among all the soil layers. Compared with uniform settlement, nonuniform settlement is more likely to cause connection failure between tunnel segments. The above research results can provide references for the prevention and control of land subsidence and thus the safe operation of major infrastructure.

Abstract:Since 1980, land subsidence has accelerated and groundwater levels have decreased in the centre of Shanghai, although the net withdrawn volume of groundwater has not increased. Theoretical analysis of the monitored data shows that the decrease in the groundwater level is the primary reason for the observed land subsidence. Meanwhile, the net withdrawn volume of groundwater in the urban centre of Shanghai has not increased during this period. Many underground structures have been constructed in the multi-aquifer-aquitard system of Shanghai since 1980. This paper discusses the factors related to the development of land subsidence during the process of urbanisation in Shanghai during the past 30 years. These factors include additional load during and after structure construction, the cut-off and/or partial cut-off effect of underground structures in aquifers, the decrease in the groundwater level due to leakage of underground structures and the reduction in recharge of groundwater from the surroundings.

Abstract:<p>Land subsidence is a severe geo-hazard in coastal regions and represents a great threat to infrastructure. Based on long-term measurement data, including that for deep compaction from vertical multipoint extensometers, land subsidence and infrastructural settlement from leveling surveys, groundwater levels in multiple confined aquifers, and hydrogeological conditions, this study investigates the effects of groundwater exploitation and recharge on land subsidence and the settlement of infrastructure in Shanghai, China. Further, groundwater exploitation and the consequent responses of piezometric heads in the multiple confined aquifers of Shanghai soft deposits are discussed. Subsequently, regional land subsidence, local deep-soil deformation, and infrastructural settlement are analyzed in terms of groundwater exploitation. It is found that the subsidence pattern is related to the trend of groundwater exploitation and the variation of piezometric heads in the aquifers, which can be roughly divided into three phases. Subsidence funnels could occur, and could be interpreted according to the differences in groundwater exploitation intensity and the spatial variability of lithology. Since the towers of Nanpu Bridge are located within the area of the subsidence funnel, this could be the main reason for the differential settlement of the bridge.</p>

Abstract:This paper discusses damage characteristics of farmland due to coal mining subsidence in eastern China. The landscape of the mining subsidence trough has been divided into three zones: central zone, trough margin zone and inner-edge zone. Each zone had a specific characteristic of deformation. The water accumulation, prone (downward sloping) land and fissures are typical damage characteristics of the subsidence landscape in eastern China. Based on soil analysis at different positions of the subsidence trough, the impact of mining subsidence on soil properties was identified. The physical properties of soil sensitive to mining subsidence were bulk density, water content and hydraulic conductivity, and they showed worsening from the top to the centre of the subsidence trough. Except for soil electrical conductivity, the tested soil chemical properties were not so sensitive to mining subsidence. They may however change after subsidence. An accumulation of salt was found in both new and old subsidence areas and the old subsidence area had a higher salt content. The soil biomass C in newly subsided land showed a decreasing trend from the top to the centre of the subsidence trough, but no obvious trend was observed in the old subsidence areas. Based on the soil analysis of subsided land, soil erosion was identified as a serious problem, most severe in the middle of the prone land.

Abstract:Land subsidence in China occurs predominantly in 17 provinces (cities) situated in the eastern and middle regions of the country, including Shanghai, Tianjin and Jiangsu, and Hebei provinces. It is primarily caused by groundwater overpumping. One of the areas most severely affected by land subsidence is the Yangtze Delta, most of which consists of Shanghai City, the Su-Xi-Chang area (Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou cities) of Jiangsu Province, and the Hang-Jia-Hu area (Hangzhou, Jiaxing and Huzhou cities) of Zhejiang Province. The excessive exploitation of groundwater forms in a large regional cone of depression and, consequently, land subsidence is also regional, currently centered in the Shanghai and Su-Xi-Chang areas. In 2002, the maximum cumulative subsidence of Shanghai, Su-Xi-Chang and Hang-Jia-Hu were 2.63 m, 2.00 and 1.06 m, respectively. The land subsidence area is continuing to expand throughout the Yangtze Delta. To study the characteristics and the pattern of this land subsidence, the government has implemented a monitoring system involving the placement of 37 groups of extensometers (layers marks) and drilling of more than 1000 observation wells. These provide an invaluable historical record of deformation and pore water pressure and facilitate studies on the special features of soil deformation when the groundwater level changes due to pumping. Several measures have been taken in recent years to control the development of the land subsidence in the different areas; these include groundwater injection, prohibition of pumping deep confined groundwater, and an adjustment of the pumping depth and magnitude of the groundwater withdrawn. At present, although the subsidence area is still increasing slowly, the subsidence rate is controlled.

Abstract:[Objective]The Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou region is one of the most severely affected areas by land subsidence,both in China and globally.In the early 1970s,land subsidence occurred and resulted in the formation of ground fissures caused by differential subsidence,thus resulting in significant economic losses.In this century,the rate of ground subsidence has decreased,with some areas experiencing regional ground resilience.The unique developmental history of ground subsidence allows one to comprehensively interpret its evolutionary process and causal mechanisms.This study aims to unravel the life cycle and driving forces of land subsidence in the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou region.[Methods]To achieve this,a multifaceted approach was employed,including long-term and large-scale monitoring of three-dimensional seepage,stress,and strain,complemented by physical experimental models and numerical simulations.An analysis was conducted to synthesize the macro-evolutionary patterns and causal mechanisms of land subsidence and the formation of ground fissures.[Results and Conclusion]The findings indicate that land subsidence in the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou region exhibits distinct characteristics that evolve through five discernible stages:initiation,rapid development,deceleration,stagnation,and rebound.The development of land subsidence is intricately connected to groundwater extraction,with stratum deformation arising predominantly from the compaction and dewatering of aquifers and aquitards due to pumping.During the subsidence phase,primary aquifer sand and contiguous aquitards are identified as the primary contributors to subsidence.By dissecting the causal mechanisms of land subsidence and ground fissures,this study delineates the spatiotemporal evolution of the structural compression and rebound of strata under varying conditions of deep groundwater exploitation,restriction,and prohibition,along with their respective contributions to subsidence.Ground fissures,which act as a secondary geological hazard at certain stages of subsidence,exhibit a spatial distribution and occurrence time that are closely related to groundwater levels,land subsidence,bedrock undulations,and soil-layer structural disparities.The life cycle of ground fissures can be encapsulated by the mechanical processes of compression,tension,shearing,and rebound,which highlights the triggers and critical thresholds for fissure formation due to differential subsidence.An integrated"sky-air-ground"monitoring system that can perform full-section fiber-optic monitoring in geological boreholes and amalgamates diverse technical methods is established to obtain scientific and granular data support for land-subsidence control and prevention.Furthermore,an innovative finite-element coupling interface element method customized for regional and site-specific scales is developed.This method successfully simulates the mechanisms of stratum deformation as well as the genesis and propagation of ground fissures under complex three-dimensional geological conditions,thus facilitating the precise identification and management of subsidence and fissure prone areas.[Significance]This study highlights the government's land subsidence control measures at various stages,which are characterized by technological innovations such as groundwater extraction restrictions and bans,thus setting a precedent for land subsidence management and groundwater resource stewardship in other provinces and cities across China.

Abstract:Land subsidence is a typical geo-hazard in Cangzhou, North China Plain, having caused severe damages to transportation networks, public utilities, and other civil infrastructures. The mechanism of land subsidence and its affecting factors were revealed by theoretical model analysis, and doing geotechnical tests and monitoring of soil deformation as well as groundwater level. Theoretical analysis shows that groundwater withdrawal from both unconfined and confined aquifers can lead to land subsidence. Land subsidence of the Cangzhou Plain is mainly caused by the exploitation of deep confined groundwater. Geotechnical tests show a general trend that the compressive modulus increases with the increase of soil depth. The strata of the Upper Pleistocene and Holocene are mostly normally consolidated and partially under-consolidated, which are prone to produce large compression after pumping. Land subsidence in the Cangzhou Plain has a strong hysteresis because of seepage consolidation and creep. The deformation characteristics of strata change at different depth. The shallow aquifers are mainly elastic deformation. The area of severe land subsidence in the Cangzhou Plain is closely related to rainfall, mainly because the large amount of water are used for agricultural irrigation. InSAR results show a sudden change in regional subsidence across the Cangdong fault, which is caused by the difference in the thickness of Quaternary sediments and the difference in the deep confined groundwater level.

Abstract:Climate-induced sea-level rise and vertical land movements, including natural and human-induced subsidence in sedimentary coastal lowlands, combine to change relative sea levels around the world's coasts. Although this affects local rates of sea-level rise, assessments of the coastal impacts of subsidence are lacking on a global scale. Here, we quantify global-mean relative sea-level rise to be 2.5 mm yr−1 over the past two decades. However, as coastal inhabitants are preferentially located in subsiding locations, they experience an average relative sea-level rise up to four times faster at 7.8 to 9.9 mm yr−1. These results indicate that the impacts and adaptation needs are much higher than reported global sea-level rise measurements suggest. In particular, human-induced subsidence in and surrounding coastal cities can be rapidly reduced with appropriate policy for groundwater utilization and drainage. Such policy would offer substantial and rapid benefits to reduce growth of coastal flood exposure due to relative sea-level rise.

Abstract:Su-Xi-Chang area and Shanghai City, located in the south of Yangtze Delta, China, has subsided due to groundwater overpumping. Because of the regional scale of the groundwater exploitation, cone of depression and land subsidence at present, Su-Xi-Chang area and Shanghai City are treated as a single area for land subsidence study to avoid the uncertainty of boundary condition due to the regionalism. The characteristics of aquifer system compaction are complex because of the difference in the types, compositions and structures of the soils that the hydrostratigraphic units are composed of, and in the histories of groundwater level change the hydrostratigraphic units have experienced. Considering the fact that different hydrostratigraphic units have different kinds of deformation and that an identical unit may also present different deformation characteristics, such as elasticity, elasto-plasticity, and visco-elasto-plasticity, at different sites of the cone of depression or in different periods, corresponding constitutive laws have been adopted. This avoids the shortcomings of the previous research that the same constitutive law was adopted in all the hydrostratigraphic units during the entire time period. A coupled flow and subsidence model, which includes a three-dimensional flow model with variable coefficients and a one-dimensional (vertical) subsidence model, is built according to the complicated hydrological condition in the region. The simulation model is calibrated using observed data, which include compression of individual strata from groups of extensometers and groundwater levels from observation wells from 1995 to 2002. The model reproduced that the primary subsidence layer in Shanghai shifts from the shallow aquitard to the fourth confined aquifer because of the groundwater yield variations and the change of exploitation aquifers. However the third aquitard was the primary subsidence layer in Su-Xi-Chang area and the compaction deformation of the sandy aquifers was remarkable. The simulation results could provide some reasonable advice about groundwater exploitation in the future.
