Abstract:The Daoist monasteries, which were first popularized in southern China in the late fifth century, reflected major changes in the structure of medieval Daoism. From the perspective of comparative religious history, the rise of Daoist monasteries bears some similarity to the monasticisms that came into being in the Christian and Buddhist traditions; all three originated in hermitic and ascetic practices. However, Daoist monasticism did not naturally stem from the hermetic Daoism tradition; instead, it underwent a two-stage process of "grafting" in terms of its spiritual beliefs and values. The first stage saw the emergence of Daoist scriptures in the Jin and Song periods; in particular, the Lingbao scriptures, which transformed and distilled the tradition of hermetic Daoism practiced in the mountains and invested hermitic practice with a more complete and sacrosanct doctrinal foundation. The second saw the Southern Dynasties' Celestial Masters order embrace and experiment with the beliefs and values within the Lingbao scriptures; this process introduced the inherent communitarian nature of the Celestial Masters into the development of Daoist monasticism and resulted in the large-scale transformation of religious practice among the Celestial Masters of the period. This change of direction among the Celestial Masters order in the Jin and Song periods toward mountain-based practice led to the establishment of Daoist monasticism, but also to a loss of purity therein.

Abstract:Abstract: The Daoist role within traditional Chinese human/nature relationships has often been characterized as one that aims at achieving harmony with nature. This article challenges many of the basic assumptions regarding the harmony model, focusing instead on the rich trove of judicial rituals that Daoist adepts had at their disposition for disciplining, correcting, or punishing elements of the landscape. A substantial part of these rituals was underpinned by Daoist legal codes from the Celestial Heart (Tianxin) tradition that emerged during the eleventh century and spread more widely soon after. Of the subjects these codices target, the present article focuses on trees, rocks, mountains, dragons, and certain animals. A picture emerges of stringent approaches to achieve order in the natural world, based on Celestial Laws, enforced by ritual officials. Throughout all these rituals, however, runs the idea of a landscape that is brimming with purpose, agency, responsibility, and divinity.

Abstract:The recently excavated Mawangdui and Zhangjiashan manuscripts have been instrumental in reconstructing early Chinese self-cultivation practices, such as meditation, calisthenics and sexual exercises, providing scholars with new information that was not preserved in the received literature. This article focuses on the production, dissemination, and use of these manuscripts and their role in promoting regimens of self-cultivation. Fusing two theoretical frameworks, the ‘religio-medical marketplace’ model and the ‘supply-side religious economy’ paradigm, with a close reading of excavated and received sources, I suggest that the production of these manuscripts can be seen as a component of a conscious strategy employed by ‘masters of techniques’ in their attempts to attract the patronage of elite customers in the religio-medical marketplace. This was done by employing a multifaceted approach: couching these manuscripts in familiar terminology and literary allusions, presenting the problems of their clientele, aging men, as solvable conditions, and limiting access to their texts and techniques in order to package them as luxury items. Uncovering the methodology and ideology behind the manufacturing of these manuscripts, I argue, allows us to determine the utility, pragmatics, and cultural practices embedded and reiterated in their narratives and shed new light on the role of textual production in the propagation of self-cultivation regimens in early China.

Abstract:The Dao De Jing offers a complete account of reality, running from an ultimate emptiness, which is called the Dao, to the multitude of everyday things. Central to the Daoist account is the YinYang dynamic, which can exist in a state of either harmony in which case the Dao is realized, or discord, in which case life is defined by a series of hardships. The seamless explanation encompasses consciousness, akin to the Dao, as well as cognition and form, both necessary for the experience of the Dao. This elucidation also intertwines time and space, which too have Yin and Yang characteristics and feature in the harmonious and discordant states. The Yin aspect of time and space manifests as the deep here and now, while the Yang aspect appears as the conventional past and future or near and far. When the central YinYang dynamic is in harmony, consciousness, cognition, and form converge in a state of effortless action. In this state of oneness, the here and now is realized and linear time and space are experienced as but for this deeper truth. In discord, on the other hand, consciousness, cognition, and form struggle among each other so that a person suffers unease and life becomes difficult. Time and space are experienced as a conflict between the need to be present and the need or desire to be some other place and time. The ideal state of harmony with time and space dilation has been well-documented and is characterized by modern positive psychology as the state of "flow." The disruptive state of discord, on the other hand, is now often misconstrued as the basic human condition. As Daoism elucidates, the harmonious state of effortless action is key to all of life's endeavors from racing a sports car to butchering an ox and can be cultivated by mindfulness practices like meditation, Tai-chi and Yoga.

Abstract:The Daodejing has inconsistent editions and versions. There are controversial issues that lie in the theme, the intention, the significance, and the semantic meaning of the Daodejing. This article takes "Dao ke dao fei chang Dao" as an anchor to reexamine the different paths to the Dao of the Daodejing. We regard all of the editions and versions as an enrichment of the Daodejing. Drawing on the Chinese exegetics, we obtain two basic meanings of the verb dao ("to speak" and "to follow"), and two basic meanings of the adjective chang ("eternal" and "common"). Based on a philosophical analysis and review of the sinological interpretations, we discriminate three ways of speaking (conceptual way, metaphorical way, and transcendental way), two modes of following (to imitate the Dao and to merge identically with the Dao), and three types of eternal (immutable eternal, constantly changing as eternal, and eternal in the core). By examining different paths to the Dao, we conclude that Laozi's Dao cannot be expressed conceptually or metaphorically. We must comprehend the Dao in a transcendental way. The Dao constantly changes with a stable core or law but differs from physical law, dialectical logic, and logos in the Western context. People can follow the Dao and become identical to it.

Abstract:The ascendancy of the Western Zhou in Bronze Age China, 1045–771 BC, was a critical period in the development of Chinese civilisation and culture. This book addresses the complex relationship between geography and political power in the context of the crisis and fall of the Western Zhou state. Drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries, the book shows how inscribed bronze vessels can be used to reveal changes in the political space of the period and explores literary and geographical evidence to produce a coherent understanding of the Bronze Age past. By taking an interdisciplinary approach which embraces archaeology, history and geography, the book thoroughly reinterprets late Western Zhou history and probes the causes of its gradual decline and eventual fall. Supported throughout by maps created from the GIS datasets and by numerous on-site photographs, Landscape and Power in Early China gives significant insights into this important Bronze Age society.

Abstract:Tejaprabhā Buddha is the lord of the constellations and one of the most significant esoteric deities. Its image occurs in a number of Chinese visual presentations dating from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. The cult of Tejaprabhā was also disseminated to Korea and Japan and spawned related local visual creations. Tejaprabhā Buddha and his followers do not belong to the core group of Buddhist deities but are instead connected to the Daoist deities. This was most likely due to the fact that asterism held a greater significance to Daoists, for whom it was the most important of all the power sources derived from the cosmos. The focus of this study is on unearthing the Daoist astrological influences in the visual presentation and its adaptation of Tejaprabhā Buddha and the accompanied luminary deities in China. The cult of constellations and Tejaprabhā in the context of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism was constantly evolving under the influence of Daoism, gleaned by examining and comparing the quantity and visual variations of luminaries in the artworks of Tejaprabhā of different periods.

Altogether they give us an able summary of what is now known respecting the ancient calendars of the Babylonians, Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese, and a very interesting discussion of the vexed question of the origin of the ancient (especially the zodiacal) constellations, on which subject the author has succeeded in throwing fresh light, her conclusions being corroborated by approaching the question of precessional change from different points of view.

Despite this key relevance, many of its ideas and practices have proven difficult to understand and implement fully into clinical practice. Abstract:This paper explores masters of ceremonies and their relationship with imperial rites in the context of bureau- cratic systems in the Ming and Qing Dynasties on the base of official histories,veritable records and local gazetteer.It is argued that masters of ceremonies played an indispensable but often neglected role in imperial rites in ancient China. They belonged to Taichangsi (Court of Imperial Sacrifices) and were mainly assigned as the"director"of leading imperi- al ceremony to prepare sacrificial offerings,help rituals and read ceremonial address.Their position in the.Confucian rites centered on imperial rites is close to that of Taoist priests in Taoist rite and Buddhist monks in Buddhist rites.The rela- tionship between masters of ceremonies and ceremony of Confucian temple is discussed in detail to show that masters of ceremonies provide an indispensable ceremonial flame channeling the chief ceremonial official with gods in process,which is open and easy to he copied and offers a great possibility for imperial rites infiltrating into rural society.
