A Survey of the Studies of Renaissance Humanism in China

Abstract:The survey mainly covers the cognition,acceptance and spread of Renaissance Humanism,prevalent in the circles of European literature,in China since the New Culture Movement. Four stages of the studies are summarized in general: the discovery at the turn of the 20thcentury,the stagnation from 1949 to 1977,the rediscovery and the debate from1978 to 1990,and the renaissance and re-shaping since 1991. While achievements have been made represented in a considerable number of books,text-books,papers and dissertations,the studies are still in urgent need to be improved in some areas like the absence of the voice of more scholars of foreign literature,the disequilibrium of concern on the studies of humanism and on the studies of humanists,and the existing mistaken ideas of Renaissance humanism. Therefore,more concerns are suggested to be given on the following subjects: the dialogue between man and God,people-centered literature,the inheritance and defamiliarization of humanism in the history of western literature,humanism and humanitarianism,the similarities and differences of literary practice in various European countries during the Renaissance,a close look at the fundamental social conditions of all classes of Renaissance society,a consideration of women's roles during the Renaissance,and the comparatives studies of Renaissance humanism and relevant thoughts in ancient and modern China.
