Abstract:F-doped SnO2 (FTO) nanocrystals modified by Er and Yb with upconversion capability and excellent catalytic properties have been designed and fabricated as an economic replacement for Pt for use as the counter electrode (CE) in dye-sensitized solar cells. The cost of the UC-FTO counter electrode is only ∼(1)/20th of that for Pt. The upconverted luminescence-mediated energy transfer and the superior catalytic property for I3(-)/I(-) circulation overpowered the slight degradation caused by increased CE/electrolyte interface resistance. A 23.9% enhancement in photocurrent was achieved with little degradation in photovoltage, resulting in a 9.12% increase in solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency. Near-infrared (NIR) light-to-electricity has been directly observed by SPS and IPCE characterizations, showing the effect of the upconversion counter electrode.
Transparent MoS2/PEDOT Composite Counter Electrodes for Bifacial Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are solar energy conversion devices with high efficiency and simple fabrication procedures. Developing transparent counter electrode (CE) materials for bifacial DSSCs can address the needs of window-type building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). Herein, transparent organic-inorganic hybrid composite films of molybdenum disulfide and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (MoS2/PEDOT) are prepared to take full advantage of the conductivity and electrocatalytic ability of the two components. MoS2 is synthesized by hydrothermal method and spin-coated to form the MoS2 layer, and then PEDOT films are electrochemically polymerized on top of the MoS2 film to form the composite CEs. The DSSC with the optimized MoS2/PEDOT composite CE shows power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7% under front illumination and 4.82% under back illumination. Compared with the DSSC made by the PEDOT CE and the Pt CE, the DSSC fabricated by the MoS2/PEDOT composite CE improves the PCE by 10.6% and 6.4% for front illumination, respectively. It proves that the transparent MoS2/PEDOT CE owes superior conductivity and catalytic properties, and it is an excellent candidate for bifacial DSSC in the application of BIPVs.

Abstract:In recent years, solar cells (including dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), and perovskite solar cells (PSCs)) have attracted wide attention due to their low cost, light weight, and high efficiency. Compared with traditional solar cells with opaque counter electrodes where the sunlight can only pass from the photoanode, bifacial solar cells, which are composed of photoanode, electrolyte, transparent counter electrode, hole transport layer can realize the purpose that sunlight can pass through the photoanode and the transparent counter electrode (CE) at the same time, which can reduce the loss of sunlight and greatly broad the light utilization of device to achieve improved opto-electronic performance. In the entire electrochemical cycle, the transparent counter electrode is regarded as reducing agent in reducing the oxidation state I-3(-) in the electrolyte to the reduced state I- so the electrocatalytic activity, chemical stability, electrical conductivity of the transparent counter electrode directly influences the rear side photo-to-electricity efficiency of device and the preparation of transparent counter electrodes is significantly important for the device. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effect of the counter electrode on the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the bifacial solar cells. In view of the problems of low transmittance, high cost, and low light utilization of traditional CE, the transparent CE of bifacial solar cells with high power conversion efficiency and low cost are preferred. The transparent CE of bifacial DSSCs, QDSCs and PSCs are comprehensively discussed in this paper. The influence of materials choosing and interfacial modification methods of transparent counter electrode on the photovoltaic performances of bifacial devices are analyzed. The transparent counter electrodes materials mainly include metals and alloys, sulfides, selenides, conductive polymers, and so on. In conclusion, bifacial solar cells mainly have the following problems: high reflectivity of metal electrodes, corrosion of the sulfide on the electrodes and the stability of the conductive polymers. The further application prospects of these kinds of bifacial solar cells is proposed.
Fuel-assisted polyol reduction for highly transparent and efficient Pt counter electrodes in bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:We report a comprehensive investigation of the synthesis of highly transparent and efficient platinum (Pt) counter electrodes (CEs) for bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using a fuel-assisted polyol reduction method. By employing various fuels, such as glycine, acetylacetone, citric acid, and fmoc-glycine, as energy donors during the Pt reduction process, we systematically examined the electrocatalytic activity of the resulting Pt CEs towards the iodine-based liquid electrolyte. Our findings demonstrate that fmoc-glycine emerges as the most promising fuel, enabling the fabrication of Pt CEs with outstanding electrocatalytic abilities and an impressive transmittance exceeding 97% through the FTO glass. Moreover, the optimized DSSCs achieved remarkable front-illuminated and back-illuminated efficiencies of 6.28 ± 0.15% and 5.64 ± 0.27%, respectively, surpassing the efficiencies of DSSCs without fuel addition (5.76 ± 0.11% and 4.46 ± 0.34%). The careful selection of the fuel played a pivotal role in determining the properties of the Pt CEs, ultimately influencing the overall performance of the DSSCs. This study underscores the significance of fuel-assisted synthesis techniques in achieving highly efficient Pt CEs for bifacial DSSCs.

High-performance plastic platinized counter electrode via photoplatinization technique for flexible dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:A photoplatinization technique was proposed to deposit Pt on a thin TiO(2) layer modified indium tin oxide-coated polyethylene naphthalate (ITO/PEN) substrate at low temperature (about 50 °C after 1 h of UV irradiation) for the first time. The fabrication process includes coating and hydrolyzing the tetra-n-butyl titanate to form a TiO(2)-modified layer and the photoplatinization of the modified substrate in H(2)PtCl(6)/2-propanol precursor solution under UV irradiation. The obtained platinized electrodes were used as counter electrodes (CE) for flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (FDSCs). The well-optimized platinized electrode showed high optical transmittance, up to 76.5% between 400 and 800 nm (T(av)), and the charge transfer resistance (R(ct)) was as low as 0.66 Ω cm(2). A series of characterizations also demonstrated the outstanding chemical/electrochemical durability and mechanical stability of the platinized electrode. The FDSCs with TiO(2)/Ti photoanodes and the obtained CEs achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 8.12% under rear-side irradiation (AM 1.5 illumination, 100 mW cm(-2)). The obtained CEs were also employed in all-plastic bifacial DSCs. When irradiated from the rear side, the bifacial FDSC yielded a PCE of 6.26%, which approached 90% that of front-side irradiation (6.97%). Our study revealed that, apart from serving as a functional layer for deposition of Pt, the thin TiO(2) layer modification on ITO/PEN substrates also played an important role in improving the transparency and the mechanical properties of the CE. The effect of the thickness of the TiO(2) layer for Pt coating on the performance of the CE was also investigated.
FTO-free and low-Pt-loading counter electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells based on chemical bath deposited microstructured nickel layer

Abstract:Several hundred Ni microspheres with a diameter of 2–3 μm coated on frosted glass by chemical bath deposition are used as conductive substrates. Then, low-temperature immersion method (LTIM) and thermal decomposition method (TDM) are adopted respectively to deposit a thin Pt layer on Ni/glass and obtain Pt/Ni/glass electrodes which were employed as counter electrodes (CEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The results show that the DSC device with well-optimized LTIM-electrode achieves a remarkable increase of 0.69 and 7.78% in fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) respectively. However, well-optimized TDM-electrode and traditional sputtered-Pt-electrode demonstrate an efficiency of 6.59% and 7.55% with a FF of 0.65 and 0.69, respectively. In addition, the LTIM-electrode has the lowest Pt loading of only 15.4 μg/cm2 among these three types of CEs. Thus, LTIM presents here paved the way for the preparation of excellent electrocatalytic CEs with extremely low Pt loading on F-doped SnO2 (FTO) free of Ni/glass substrates in DSCs, greatly reducing the cost of present photovoltaic devices. Furthermore, this LTIM can be applied to deposit other noble metals on a variety of flexible substrates, including polyethylene naphthalate or terephthalate.

Abstract:Tellurium-doped, mesoporous carbon nanomaterials with a relatively high doping level were prepared by a simple stabilization and carbonization method in the presence of a tellurium metalloid. A transparent counter electrode (CE) was prepared using tellurium-doped, mesoporous carbon (TeMC) materials, and was directly applied to bifacial, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). To improve the performance of the bifacial DSSC device, CEs should have outstanding electrocatalytic activity, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical stability, as well as high transparency. In this study, to make transparent electrodes with outstanding electrocatalytic activity and electrical conductivity, various TeMC materials with different carbonization temperatures were prepared by simple pyrolysis of the polyacrylonitrile-block-poly (n-butyl acrylate) (PAN-b-PBA) block copolymer in the presence of the tellurium metalloid. The electrocatalytic activity of the prepared TeMC materials were evaluated through a dummy cell test, and the material with the best catalytic ability was selected and optimized for application in bifacial DSSC devices by controlling the film thickness of the CE. As a result, the bifacial DSSC devices with the TeMC CE exhibited high power conversion efficiencies (PCE), i.e., 9.43% and 8.06% under front and rear side irradiation, respectively, which are the highest values reported for bifacial DSSCs to date. Based on these results, newly-developed transparent, carbon-based electrodes may lead to more stable and effective bifacial DSSC development without sacrificing the photovoltaic performance of the DSSC device.

Abstract:A novel transparent honeycomb-like poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/multi-wall carbon nanotube (PEDOT/MWCNT) electrode served as a counter electrode (CE) for the bifacial dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) has been fabricated on the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass using a sacrificial template of poly(methyl methacrylate) for the first time. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements indicate that the honeycomb-like PEDOT/MWCNT CE has a higher electrocatalytic activity for the I3−/I− redox reaction and a smaller charge transfer resistance than those of the flat PEDOT CE. Ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer measurement indicates that the PEDOT/MWCNT CE with honeycomb-like nanostructure demonstrates high transparency for the backside illumination. The bifacial DSSC based on this honeycomb-like PEDOT/MWCNT CE shows conversion efficiencies of 9.07% and 5.62% from front and rear side illumination, respectively, which are higher than those of the bifacial DSSC based on the flat PEDOT CE (7.51% and 3.49% respectively).

Abstract:Honeycomb-like poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) counter electrode (CE) for the bifacial dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is first prepared by a facile method using a sacrificial template of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Cyclic voltammetry and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer measurements indicate that the PEDOT CE with honeycomb-like nanostructure demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of triiodide (I3−) to iodide (I−) and high transparency for the backside illumination. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements show that the honeycomb-like nanostructure reduces the CE's resistance for the transfer of electrons from the external circuit back to the redox electrolyte. The bifacial DSSC based on the honeycomb-like PEDOT CE yields front and rear efficiencies of 9.12% and 5.75%, which are higher than those of the bifacial DSSC based on the flat PEDOT (8.05% and 3.78% respectively). These promising results highlight the potential application of the facile template method for preparing other cost-effective and transparent CEs, which can be used in bifacial solar cells and tandem devices.

Abstract:The counter electrode (CE) is an important and vital part of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Pt CEs show high-performance in DSSCs using iodide-based electrolytes. However, the high cost of Pt CEs restricts their large-scale application in DSSCs and the development of Pt-free CE is expected. Here, α-Fe2O3/reduced graphene oxide (α-Fe2O3/RGO) composites are prepared as the Pt-free CE materials for DSSCs. A simple hydrothermal technique was used to disseminate the α-Fe2O3 solid nanoparticles uniformly throughout the RGO surface. The presence of the α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles increases the specific surface area of RGO and allows the composites to be porous, which improves the diffusion of liquid electrolyte into the CE material. Then, the electrocatalytic properties of CEs with α-Fe2O3/RGO, α-Fe2O3, RGO, and Pt materials are compared. The α-Fe2O3/RGO CE has a similar electrocatalytic performance to Pt CE, which is superior to those of the pure α-Fe2O3 and RGO CEs. After being fabricated as DSSCs, the current–voltage measurements reveal that the DSSC based on α-Fe2O3/RGO CE has a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.12%, which is 88% that of Pt CE and much higher than that of pure α-Fe2O3 and pure RGO CEs. All the results show that this work describes a promising material for cost-effective, Pt-free CEs for DSSCs.

Ultrasonic Remove of Particle Aggregation in Carbon Based Counter Electrodes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Low-cost carbon materials (carbon black and graphite power) were applied as substitution of platinum (Pt) in counter electrodes (CEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Three fabrication methods, such as ball-milled, pulp-refined, and ultrasonic-crushed, were applied to remove the particle aggregation in the carbon pastes. Then the carbon based pastes were printed on fluorine-doped transparent conducting oxide (FTO) glasses, used as the CEs for DSSCs. Under illumination of 100 mW/cm(2), DSSCs with ultrasonic-crushed CEs (U-CEs) show an energy conversion efficiency of 3.57%, which reach to 65.38% of that with conventional sputtered platinum CEs (5.46%). In addition, U-CEs exhibit a higher catalytic activity and a faster charge transfer rate toward the reduction of I-3(-) to I-.
Zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks derived Pt-free counter electrodes for high-performance quantum dot-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Zeolitic-imidazole frameworks (ZIFs), as novel porous materials, are attracting much attention in several fields due to their special advantages such as large specific surface area, versatile porosity and well-connected networks. Here, we develop a porous ZIF-derived catalytic thin film, which was coated on the conducting glass as a counter electrode (CE) to substitute costly platinum for quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). A ZIF layer is first prepared by coating ZIF-67 powders on the conducting glass, followed by the careful calcination treatments in sulfur vapour (sulfuration) or nitrogen gas (carbonization). The structure and morphologies of the derived porous film are characterized by the measurements of XRD, SEM and BET, and the electrochemical properties in the polysulfide solution are evaluated by the measurements of Tafel curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies. The derived porous film is used as a CE to fabricate QDSSC with CdSe quantum dot-sensitized TiO2 nanocrystalline thin film and the polysulfide solution. Compared with the photovoltaic performance of CdSe QDSSCs based on the CE prepared by the different sulfuration conditions, QDSSC based on the CE derived by the sulfuration for 30 min shows an excellent light-to-electric conversion efficiency of 3.77%, it is even higher than that of QDSSC based on Pt CE (2.98%). This work will open a new avenue to design a facile, low-cost and renewable CE for QDSSC.
Bifacial Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Using Highly Transparent PEDOT:PSS Films As Counter Electrodes

Abstract:Highly transparent poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) films prepared by a facile spin-coating process were developed as counter electrodes for the configuration of bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with capability of utilizing the light from both sides. The used PEDOT:PSS films involved a pristine PEDOT:PSS film and ten modified PEDOT:PSS ones. The additives for preparing the modified PEDOT:PSS films were involved in iodine (IOD), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethanol, acetone, glycerol, sorbitol and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights (200, 400, 800 and 20,000). The UV-Vis spectra confirm that all the PEDOT:PSS films on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates have excellent transparency with transmittance ranging from 78% to 83.5% at 550 nm. The bifacial DSSC using the pristine PEDOT:PSS film exhibits the efficiencies of 4.71% and 2.38% corresponding to the illuminations from the front and the rear sides, respectively. When the additives of IOD, DMSO and PEG200 are applied to modify the pristine PEDOT:PSS film, the corresponding device shows a significantly improved efficiency of 5.19%, 5.11% and 5.29% under the front illumination and an almost unchanged efficiency under the rear illumination, respectively. The strengthened efficiency is mainly attributed to the improved catalytic activity of the modified PEDOT:PSS films induced by the coarser surface and the lower sheet resistance. Moreover, the bifacial DSSCs with the three modified PEDOT:PSS films not only have a comparable front-illuminated efficiency to the conventional Pt based DSSCs but also possess a higher rear-illuminated efficiency than the latter cells. The Maximum Limiting Performance Improved Counter Electrode Based on a Porous Fluorine Doped Tin Oxide Conductive Framework for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A novel porous fluorine doped tin oxide (PFTO) conductive framework was introduced to counter electrodes (CEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). When modified by platinum (Pt) or carbon (C), the PFTO conductive framework displays high catalytic activity to I−/I3− redox couples. Power conversion efficiencies of 6.09% and 5.81% were obtained in the DSSCs based on Pt and C modified PFTO CEs respectively, which were close to that of DSSCs with Pt coated FTO glass (6.05%) and Pt sheet (6.26%) CEs. Maximum limiting performances of the CEs were obtained from the polarization curves. The CE based on PFTO showed higher maximum limiting power conversion efficiency (∼20%) compared with the planar FTO substrate Pt CE (∼18%), with the increase of its surface area and electrocatalytic activity.
Review on Low‐Cost Counter Electrode Materials for Dye‐Sensitized Solar Cells: Effective Strategy to Improve Photovoltaic Performance

Abstract:The photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) can be remarkably improved by optimizing the catalytic activity and charge transfer ability of the counter electrode (CE) materials. The attentive hotspots of CE catalysts for DSSCs are to design multifunctional materials that balance the fabrication cost, environmental friendliness, PCE, and electrochemical stability, then to achieve the substitution of the benchmark Pt. In this review, the four effective strategies are highlighted for further improving the photovoltaic performance of the DSSCs based on low‐cost CE materials, such as heteroatom‐doped materials, development of noble metal‐free chalcogenides with well‐controlled facets, construction of heterostructure, and synthesis of composites with a synergistic effect. In some typical examples, the influence of these strategies on catalytic activity, charge transfer ability, and reaction mechanism are elucidated by the theoretical calculation. Then the research opportunities and the challenges for the high‐efficiency DSSCs based on low‐cost CE materials are presented. Four strategies are highlighted to further improve photovoltaic performance of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on low‐cost counter electrode materials. In some typical examples, theoretical calculations based on density functional theory illustrate the influence of these strategies on the reaction mechanism, which helps to establish the relationship between the structure of counter electrode material and photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:The counter electrode (CE) is regarded as one of key components affecting the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It is still a challenge to develop an economical Pt-free CE with superior catalytic activity and high reflectance ability in DSSCs. Herein, the mirror-like NiCo2S4/TiO2 CE with high reflectance ability is prepared on the TiO2 coated FTO glass by a one-step hydrothermal method. Due to high electrocatalytic activity and excellent light reflectivity, the mirror-like NiCo2S4/TiO2 CE based DSSC displays high photoelectric conversion efficiency of 8.29%, superior to Pt CE (7.45%). This kind of the mirror-like NiCo2S4/TiO2 CE stands out from the commercial Pt CE due to its above merits.

Abstract:Honeycomb-like polypyrrole/multi-wall carbon nanotube (PPy/MWCNT) film demonstrates as an efficient and semitransparent counter electrode (CE) in bifacial dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), which is first fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass by a facile method using a sacrificial template of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The results from ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer and cyclic voltammetry measurements testify that the honeycomb-like PPy/MWCNT film possesses high transparency for the backside illumination and wonderful electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of triiodide (I 3 − ) to iodide (I − ) in the bifacial DSSC. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate that the honeycomb-like nanostructure combining with the MWCNT decreases the resistance of the PPy/MWCNT film for the transfer of electrons from the external circuit back to the redox electrolyte. The bifacial DSSC based on the honeycomb-like PPy/MWCNT CE achieves 7.07 and 4.11% of the front and rear efficiencies, respectively, which are higher than those of the bifacial DSSC based on the flat PPy CE (5.78 and 3.07%, respectively).

Abstract:The current work involves the fabrication of a MXene-Polythiophene (Ti3C2T x -PTh) composite via interfacial polymerization, alongside its deployment as a counter electrode (CE) or photocathode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The structural properties of the synthesized materials were investigated through a comprehensive array of techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical performance, assessed via cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), revealed that the Ti3C2T x -PTh CE exhibits superior electro-catalytic activity, and reduction in charge transfer resistance compared to other individual CEs. These observations are in concordance with the data obtained from Tafel analysis. The incorporation of Ti3C2T x sheets into the composite significantly augmented its catalytic efficacy for triiodide reduction, manifesting in elevated short-circuit photocurrent density and enhanced fill factor metrics. A DSSC utilizing the Ti3C2T x -PTh CE exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.83%, which stands on par with that of traditional Pt CEs. Thus, the Ti3C2T x -PTh CE material is posited as a viable, cost-efficient alternative to Pt, heralding a new era in the engineering of counter electrodes for the next generation of DSSCs.
Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides-Based Counter Electrodes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are gaining considerable interest as alternatives to the semiconductor-based thin film solar cells. The noble metal platinum (Pt) is conventionally used as counter electrode (CE) material for fabricating DSSCs. Since Pt is expensive and scarce, new materials have been explored to develop cost-effective Pt-free counter electrodes for DSSCs. Two-dimensional (2D) graphene-based counter electrodes have achieved the highest known power conversion efficiency ({\eta}) of 13%, which has stimulated research activities in 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for developing Pt-free DSSCs. In this review, progress made on alternative counter electrodes for fabricating low-cost Pt-free DSSCs, based on earth-abundant 2D TMDs including MoS2, WS2, TiS2, FeS2, CoS2, NiS2, SnS2, MoSe2, NbSe2, TaSe2, NiSe2, FeSe2, CoSe2, Bi2Se3 and their based composites, are discussed and summarized. Also, the considerable progress made on thin films of MoS2 and MoS2 based carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composites as efficient counter electrodes (CEs) for DSSCs are discussed, in terms of their electrochemical and photovoltaic properties. At present, PCE values higher than that of standard Pt CE have been recorded for a number of TMD-based CEs, which include MoS2 and MoSe2/thin films deposited on Mo foil, MoS2/CNTs, MoS2/graphene, MoS2/carbon, MoSe2/PEDOT:PSS, NbSe2, FeS2, FeSe2 nanosheets, TiS2/graphene, and NiS2/graphene hybrid systems in DSSCs, for the reduction of triiodide (I3-) to iodide (I-). The highest PCE ({\eta}=10.46%) versus Pt CE ({\eta}=8.25%) at 1 Sun (100 mW/cm2, AM 1.5G) was measured for DSSCs having a low cost and flexible CoSe2/carbon-nanoclimbing wall counter electrode deposited on a nickel foam.

Abstract:It is undoubtable that the use of solar energy will continue to increase. Solar cells that convert solar energy directly to electricity are one of the most convenient and important photoelectric conversion devices. Though silicon-based solar cells and thin-film solar cells have been commercialized, developing low-cost and highly efficient solar cells to meet future needs is still a long-term challenge. Some emerging solar-cell types, such as dye-sensitized and perovskite, are approaching acceptable performance levels, but their costs remain too high. To obtain a higher performance-price ratio, it is necessary to find new low-cost counter materials to replace conventional precious metal electrodes (Pt, Au, and Ag) in these emerging solar cells. In recent years, the number of counter-electrode materials available, and their scope for further improvement, has expanded for dye-sensitized and perovskite solar cells. Generally regular patterns in the intrinsic features and structural design of counter materials for emerging solar cells, in particular from an electrochemical perspective and their effects on cost and efficiency, are explored. It is hoped that this recapitulative analysis will help to make clear what has been achieved and what still remains for the development of cost-effective counter-electrode materials in emerging solar cells.
