Abstract:A nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-RGO) nanosheet was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electrode microscopy. After being deposited as counter electrode film for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), it is found that the synthesized N-RGO nanosheet has smaller charge-transfer resistance and better electrocatalytic activity towards reduction of triiodide than the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheet. Consequently, the DSSCs based on the N-RGO counter electrode achieve an energy conversion efficiency of 4.26%, which is higher than that of the RGO counter electrode (2.85%) prepared under the same conditions, and comparable to the value (5.21%) obtained with the Pt counter electrode as a reference. This N-RGO counter electrode offers the advantages of not only saving the cost of Pt itself but also simplifying the process of counter electrode preparation. Therefore, an inexpensive N-RGO nanosheet is a promising counter electrode material to replace noble metal Pt.

Abstract:F-doped SnO2 (FTO) nanocrystals modified by Er and Yb with upconversion capability and excellent catalytic properties have been designed and fabricated as an economic replacement for Pt for use as the counter electrode (CE) in dye-sensitized solar cells. The cost of the UC-FTO counter electrode is only ∼(1)/20th of that for Pt. The upconverted luminescence-mediated energy transfer and the superior catalytic property for I3(-)/I(-) circulation overpowered the slight degradation caused by increased CE/electrolyte interface resistance. A 23.9% enhancement in photocurrent was achieved with little degradation in photovoltage, resulting in a 9.12% increase in solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency. Near-infrared (NIR) light-to-electricity has been directly observed by SPS and IPCE characterizations, showing the effect of the upconversion counter electrode.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC) has been considered as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional photovoltaic device due to its low cost, simple fabrication process and high conversion efficiency. Pt-loaded conducting substrate has been widely exploited as the standard counter electrode for DSC. However, Pt is expensive and rare, so it is most desirable to seek a low-cost substitute for Pt in counter electrode of DSC. Transition metal compound has been demonstrated to be one of the most promising counter electrode materials for DSCs owing to its low cost, simple fabrication, broad variety of materials and good catalytic activity. This article provides a review of transition metal compound counter electrodes for DSC and a brief outlook on the future development of transition metal compound counter electrodes.

Abstract:The photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) can be remarkably improved by optimizing the catalytic activity and charge transfer ability of the counter electrode (CE) materials. The attentive hotspots of CE catalysts for DSSCs are to design multifunctional materials that balance the fabrication cost, environmental friendliness, PCE, and electrochemical stability, then to achieve the substitution of the benchmark Pt. In this review, the four effective strategies are highlighted for further improving the photovoltaic performance of the DSSCs based on low‐cost CE materials, such as heteroatom‐doped materials, development of noble metal‐free chalcogenides with well‐controlled facets, construction of heterostructure, and synthesis of composites with a synergistic effect. In some typical examples, the influence of these strategies on catalytic activity, charge transfer ability, and reaction mechanism are elucidated by the theoretical calculation. Then the research opportunities and the challenges for the high‐efficiency DSSCs based on low‐cost CE materials are presented. Four strategies are highlighted to further improve photovoltaic performance of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on low‐cost counter electrode materials. In some typical examples, theoretical calculations based on density functional theory illustrate the influence of these strategies on the reaction mechanism, which helps to establish the relationship between the structure of counter electrode material and photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Though perovskite solar cells (PSCs) or modules (PSMs) are being developed at an unprecedented speed, several obstacles remain to their commercialization. One of the difficult problems is the expensive and unstable Au and Ag counter electrode. Therefore, highly effective, stable, and low-cost counter electrode materials should be explored. Among various counter electrode materials, carbon is one of the most promising substitutes for their rich sources, low cost, outstanding electrochemical performance, and diversified surface functions. This review summarizes recent achievements of carbon counter electrode materials, which included commercial carbon paste, carbon black, graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes and their synthetic approaches, modifications, and structure-function relationships. Moreover, large-scale carbon counter electrode in PSCs or PSMs are specifically discussed. Hopefully, this recapitulative analysis will draw the attention of relevant researchers to re-understand the importance of counter electrode and clarify what should be noticed to develop qualified counter electrode materials for PSCs or PSMs.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted tremendous scientific and industrial attention because of their low cost, ease of fabrication, environmental friendliness of their raw materials, and relatively high efficiency. The counter electrode is a crucial component of a DSSC: and its price and capability determines the future large-scale manufacture of DSSCs. This review introduces the operational principles of DSSCs and the function of the counter electrode. In particular, the recent progress in new CE materials are summarized.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells have attracted intense research attention owing to their ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness and high efficiency in converting solar energy. Noble platinum is generally used as catalytic counter electrode for redox mediators in electrolyte solution. Unfortunately, platinum is expensive and non-sustainable for long-term applications. Therefore, researchers are facing with the challenge of developing low-cost and earth-abundant alternatives. So far, rational screening of non-platinum counter electrodes has been hamstrung by the lack of understanding about the electrocatalytic process of redox mediators on various counter electrodes. Here, using first-principle quantum chemical calculations, we studied the electrocatalytic process of redox mediators and predicted electrocatalytic activity of potential semiconductor counter electrodes. On the basis of theoretical predictions, we successfully used rust (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) as a new counter electrode catalyst, which demonstrates promising electrocatalytic activity towards triiodide reduction at a rate comparable to platinum.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells offer a promising alternative to conventional photovoltaics due to their low production costs and high power conversion efficiencies. A crucial component in DSSCs is the counter electrode, which facilitates the redox reaction by collecting electrons and catalyzing the reduction of oxidized species in the electrolyte. The performance of DSSCs heavily depends on the CE material. Platinum, both in bulk and nanomaterial forms, is commonly used due to its excellent catalytic activity and conductivity, though its high cost drives the search for alternatives. Carbon-based materials, such as graphene and graphene sheets, are cost-effective substitutes, offering high electrical conductivity, large surface area, and mechanical strength. Methods like chemical vapor deposition, thermal exfoliation, and chemical reduction are used to synthesize graphene-based CEs. Polymer-based materials, including conducting polymers like poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and polyaniline (PANI), present another attractive option. These polymers are synthesized through in-situ polymerization, electrochemical deposition, and chemical vapor deposition, providing flexibility and tunability. Advancements in novel materials and synthesis methods for CEs continue to enhance DSSC efficiency and reduce costs, promoting their potential for large-scale renewable energy applications.

Abstract:The exploration of low-cost and efficient counter electrodes (CEs) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is of great significance in view of potential application of DSSCs. Herein, the Fe2O3/CNFs composites are synthesized by electrospin method and a facile hydrothermal method, and the composites of Fe2O3/CNFs is used as a low-cost counter electrode for DSSCs. Scanning electron microscopy measurement shows that Fe2O3 nanoparticles have been evenly located on the exterior of CNFs, providing abundant catalytic active sites for triiodide reduction. The one dimensional CNFs has a high conductivity, which could effectively reduce the agglomeration of Fe2O3 nanoparticles, thus increasing the specific surface area of the material and facilitating the rapid transmission of ions and electrons in the electrolyte. The synergistic effect of Fe2O3/CNFs composite leads to high electrocatalytic activity. Consequently, DSSCs devices constructed with an Fe2O3/CNFs composite based on CE afford a decent power conversion efficiency of 7.48%, higher than the expensive Pt CE based DSSCs (6.97%).

Abstract:Exploiting efficient Pt-free counter-electrode materials with low cost and highly catalytic property is a hot topic in the field of Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Here, NiCo2S4/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was prepared via an economical synthesis route, and the as-prepared composite exhibited comparable electrocatalytic property with the conventional Pt electrode as the counter-electrode. Notably, the introduction of RGO into the NiCo2S4 counter-electrode induces a significantly promoted electrocatalytic rate towards the triiodide reduction than that of pristine NiCo2S4 by increasing surface area in the composite electrode, as revealed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurement and Tafel polarization measurement. The easy synthesis, low cost and excellent electrochemical performance of the NiCo2S4/RGO composites enable themselves to serve as promising counter-electrode candidates for efficient DSCs. Abstract:The counter electrode (CE) is an important and vital part of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Pt CEs show high-performance in DSSCs using iodide-based electrolytes. However, the high cost of Pt CEs restricts their large-scale application in DSSCs and the development of Pt-free CE is expected. Here, α-Fe2O3/reduced graphene oxide (α-Fe2O3/RGO) composites are prepared as the Pt-free CE materials for DSSCs. A simple hydrothermal technique was used to disseminate the α-Fe2O3 solid nanoparticles uniformly throughout the RGO surface. The presence of the α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles increases the specific surface area of RGO and allows the composites to be porous, which improves the diffusion of liquid electrolyte into the CE material. Then, the electrocatalytic properties of CEs with α-Fe2O3/RGO, α-Fe2O3, RGO, and Pt materials are compared. The α-Fe2O3/RGO CE has a similar electrocatalytic performance to Pt CE, which is superior to those of the pure α-Fe2O3 and RGO CEs. After being fabricated as DSSCs, the current–voltage measurements reveal that the DSSC based on α-Fe2O3/RGO CE has a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.12%, which is 88% that of Pt CE and much higher than that of pure α-Fe2O3 and pure RGO CEs. All the results show that this work describes a promising material for cost-effective, Pt-free CEs for DSSCs.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanorods (N-PCNRs) with high accessible surface area are prepared by carbonization of polyaniline (PANI) nanorods and subsequent chemical activation, and explored as the counter electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). SEM and TEM images demonstrate that the nanorod morphology of PANI is preserved after pre-carbonization and chemical activation treatment. The unique combination of the porosity with high accessible surface area, nitrogen doping, and nanorod structure endows the N-PCNR electrode with an excellent electrocatalytic activity for the I3- reduction, which is illuminated by the electrochemical measurements. Under simulated AM 1.5 illumination (100mWcm−2), the DSC based on N-PCNR counter electrode achieves a conversion efficiency of 7.01%, which is nearly close to that of the cell based on Pt counter electrode (7.25%).
A Low Cost Mesoporous Carbon/sno2/tio2 Nanocomposite Counter Electrode for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Highly porous carbon/SnO2/TiO2 nanocomposite films that can be used as counter electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are fabricated by coating a homogeneous and viscous carbon paste on F-doped tin oxide conducting glass. The carbon paste is prepared by ball-milling a mixture of carbon, SnO2 powder and TiO2 hydrosol in an organic solution. The composite films are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Form Talysruf Profiler. The results indicate that the photovoltaic performances of the composite DSSCs are influenced by the content of SnO2. When the content is increased to 30%. SnO2 not only acts as "framework" to strengthen the mechanical stability of the composite film but also increases the specific surface area and root-mean-square roughness, which improve fill factor and short-circuit current, finally increasing power conversion efficiency from 5.12% to 6.15%. Cyclic voltammetry analysis and electronic impedance spectroscopy of the optimum composite film display higher catalytic activity for I-3(-)/I- redox reactions and much lower charge-transfer resistance compared with Pt, respectively. Dye-sensitized solar cells based on this nanocomposite counter electrode achieve efficiency as high as 6.15% which is comparable to that of the cells using sputtering Pt as counter electrode at similar conditions. Abstract:Among various photovoltaic (PV) devices, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) represent an outstanding choice due to their low cost, easy fabrication procedures, and eco-friendly nature. The photoanode, sensitizer, electrolyte, and counter electrode are basic elements that contribute to the performance of DSSCs. Counter electrode (CE) materials play a significant role in the DSSC PV performance. Improving cost-effective electrodes for PV applications is vital to meeting potential power demand. As an essential element, CE catalysts play a crucial role in DSSCs. An expensive platinum-based CE can be replaced by a number of economical and extremely stable materials such as conducting polymers, sulfides, oxides, and carbonaceous materials such as N-doped core–shell-based DSSCs, which have reportedly attained power conversion efficiency of 7.89%, higher than platinum-based cells (7.48%). Cr-doped SiC showed better activity for triiodide splitting; however, it also revealed poor action for further splitting of the iodine into mono-iodides as compared with Pt-doped SiC slabs. A graphene nanoplatelet-based CE revealed charge transfer resistance of 3.36 Ω, slightly higher than platinum (1.18 Ω). Consequently, it showed slightly higher oxidation. The present article focuses on various striking replacements for platinum-based CEs for DSSCs that will offer innovative study opportunities for different CE materials in renewable energy fields.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:To produce a better connection and greater electron transfer efficiency between the TiO2 particles, as well as to eliminate agglomeration and increase the dispersion of TiO2 powders, a silicon dioxide/titanium dioxide (SiO2/TiO2) nanocomposite has been used as a photoanode in this study. An attempt was made to construct dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) at a low cost with reasonable efficiency by replacing the highly costly platinum counter electrode with polypyrrole/sodium dodecyl sulfate (PPy + SDS) as Counter Electrode 1 (C1) and PPy/SDS/multiwalled carbon nanotube (PPy + SDS + MWCNT) as Counter Electrode 2 (C2), using Ru‐based dyes Z907, pomegranate (Pom) dye, arugula (Aru) dye, and hibiscus dye as photosensitizers. The working electrode composite was deposited on fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) glass using a thermal chemical spraying approach, while the counter electrodes were produced using an electropolymerization method. The structural and optical characteristics are fully examined using several characterization techniques such as X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The photovoltaic properties of the constructed DSSCs were assessed under light irradiation (100 mW/cm2). When compared to the reference cell based on the Pt counter electrode, which has an efficiency of 8.4%, the measured current–voltage (I–V) curve shows that the efficiency of DSSC in the case of Z907 dye with C1 and C2 was 3.037% and 3.743%, respectively. This suggests that the low‐cost prepared DSSCs have good efficiency. Natural dyes show an efficiency range of 1.317%–0.66%, which indicates a moderate level of sensitivity.

Abstract:SnS nanosheets (NSs), SnS nanowires (NWs) and SnS2 nanosheets were synthesized and investigated as counter electrode (CE) catalysts in a I-3(-)/I- based dye- sensitized solar cell (DSC) system for the first time. It is found that the SnS NS based DSCs show comparable power- conversion efficiency (E-ff = 6.56%) to Pt (7.56%), while the E-ff of SnS NW and SnS2 NS based DSCs are 5.00% and 5.14% respectively, indicating the excellent catalytic activity of SnSx for the reduction of triiodide to iodide.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are gaining considerable interest as alternatives to the semiconductor-based thin film solar cells. The noble metal platinum (Pt) is conventionally used as counter electrode (CE) material for fabricating DSSCs. Since Pt is expensive and scarce, new materials have been explored to develop cost-effective Pt-free counter electrodes for DSSCs. Two-dimensional (2D) graphene-based counter electrodes have achieved the highest known power conversion efficiency ({\eta}) of 13%, which has stimulated research activities in 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for developing Pt-free DSSCs. In this review, progress made on alternative counter electrodes for fabricating low-cost Pt-free DSSCs, based on earth-abundant 2D TMDs including MoS2, WS2, TiS2, FeS2, CoS2, NiS2, SnS2, MoSe2, NbSe2, TaSe2, NiSe2, FeSe2, CoSe2, Bi2Se3 and their based composites, are discussed and summarized. Also, the considerable progress made on thin films of MoS2 and MoS2 based carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composites as efficient counter electrodes (CEs) for DSSCs are discussed, in terms of their electrochemical and photovoltaic properties. At present, PCE values higher than that of standard Pt CE have been recorded for a number of TMD-based CEs, which include MoS2 and MoSe2/thin films deposited on Mo foil, MoS2/CNTs, MoS2/graphene, MoS2/carbon, MoSe2/PEDOT:PSS, NbSe2, FeS2, FeSe2 nanosheets, TiS2/graphene, and NiS2/graphene hybrid systems in DSSCs, for the reduction of triiodide (I3-) to iodide (I-). The highest PCE ({\eta}=10.46%) versus Pt CE ({\eta}=8.25%) at 1 Sun (100 mW/cm2, AM 1.5G) was measured for DSSCs having a low cost and flexible CoSe2/carbon-nanoclimbing wall counter electrode deposited on a nickel foam.
