Abstract:The hydrophilic extractives isolated from black alder (Alnus glutinosa) bark through hot water extraction were characterized as novel renewable macromonomers capable of forming polyurethane (PU) networks based on a commercial polyisocyanate, with partial or complete replacement of petroleum-derived polyol polyether. The bark-sourced bio-polyol mainly consists of the xyloside form of the diarylheptanoid oregonin, along with oligomeric flavonoids and carbohydrates, resulting in a total OH group content of 15.1 mmol·g−1 and a molecular weight (Mn) of approximately 750 g∙mol−1. The 31P NMR data confirmed a similar proportion of aliphatic OH and phenolic groups. Three-component PU compositions were prepared using polyethylene glycol (Mn = 400 g∙mol−1), bio-polyol (up to 50%), and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate, which were pre-polymerized in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution with tin organic and tertiary amine catalysts. The resulting mixture was cast and subjected to thermal post-curing. Calculation and experimental data confirmed the crosslinking activity of the bark-sourced bio-polyol in PU, leading to an increase in glass transition temperature (Tg), a decrease in sol fraction yield upon leaching of cured PU networks in THF, a significant increase in Young's modulus and tensile strength. The macromonomers derived from bark promoted char formation under high temperature and oxidative stress conditions, limiting heat release during macromolecular network degradation compared to bio-polyol-free PU. It was observed that amine catalysts, which are active in urethane formation with phenolic groups, promoted the formation of PU with higher Tg and modulus at tensile but with less limitation of heat liberation during PU macromolecular structure degradation. The high functionality of the bark-derived bio-polyol, along with the equal proportion of phenolic and aliphatic OH groups, allows for further optimization of PU characteristics using three variables: increasing the substitution extent of commercial polyethers, decreasing the NCO/OH ratio, and selecting the type of catalyst used.

Abstract:Polyurethane chemistry can yield diverse sets of polymeric materials exhibiting a wide range of properties for various applications and market segments. Utilizing lignin as a polyol presents an opportunity to incorporate a currently underutilized renewable aromatic polymer into these products. In this work, we will review the current state of technology for utilizing lignin as a polyol replacement in different polyurethane products. This will include a discussion of lignin structure, diversity, and modification during chemical pulping and cellulosic biofuels processes, approaches for lignin extraction, recovery, fractionation, and modification/functionalization. We will discuss the potential of incorporation of lignins into polyurethane products that include rigid and flexible foams, adhesives, coatings, and elastomers. Finally, we will discuss challenges in incorporating lignin in polyurethane formulations, potential solutions and approaches that have been taken to resolve those issues.

Abstract:The development of sustainable bio-polyurethanes (bio-PU) from nonfood lignin has been attracting extensive attention owing to the abundant reserves, stable aromatic structures, and rich hydroxyls of lignin. However, exploiting a high-performance lignin-based PU integrating excellent mechanical properties with reprocessability is still a challenge. Herein, we proposed a dynamic phenolic-carbamates to construct robust and reprocessable bio-PU elastomers based on the reaction of phenolic lignin (PL) with isocyanate. Benefiting from the low M w of 1692 Da and the abundant phenolic hydroxyls of 8.3 mmol/g, the adaptable cross-linking network consisting of dynamic hydrogen bonds and phenolic-carbamates were formed by PL. The synthesized phenolic lignin-based PU (PLPU) displayed tunable mechanical properties via adjusting PL substitution amount. The tensile strength, modulus and toughness of PLPU reached 58.8 MPa, 1350.3 MPa, and 57 MJ/m 3 when the substitution amount of PL was 70%, respectively. Importantly, the reversible cross-linking structure endowed PLPU with excellent multi-reprocessability. After 5 reprocessing cycles, the retention ratio of strength, breaking elongation, modulus and toughness was 87.6%, 58.9%, 218.1% and 63.3%, respectively, which were 1.6, 1.1, 3.5, 2.2 times higher than those of commercial lignin-based polyurethane (CLPU). Therefore, this work not only presents a robust and multi-reprocessable lignin-based PU elastomer with high substitution amount, but also provides a promising sustainable alternative to replace petroleum-based plastic.

Abstract:Lignin, with its availability, aromatic structure, and abundant hydroxyl groups, presents a promising source of green bio-based polyols. The environmental implications of oil-derived polymeric materials have sparked interest in renewable biopolymers and composites from natural sources, including polyurethane composites. This review investigates optimal methods for lignin extraction for use in lignin-based polyurethane coatings, scrutinizes alternatives to oil-based polyols, compares existing chemical modification methods of lignin for use in polyurethane coatings and resins, and discusses the control of synthesis and final properties of lignin-based polyurethane, emphasizing the crucial role of the stoichiometric ratio of NCO groups in the isocyanate to the total OH groups in a lignin-based polyol. While numerous studies have focused on polyurethanes with and without isocyanate, this review describes the synthesis of lignin into bio-polyols and its potential as a substitute for petroleum-based polyols, highlighting organosolv and Kraft lignin as optimal choices for replacing oil-based polyols in polyurethanes due to their high purity..

Abstract:A new type of organosolv wheat straw lignin, so-called Biolignin™, was studied. It is obtained according to the biomass processing in water diluted organic acid media and is not completely soluble in conventional organic solvents traditionally applied for polyurethanes (PU) synthesis. The fractionation of the lignin by sequential extraction with dichloromethane, methanol and a mixture of both solvents was performed. The total yield of the separated soluble fractions was 40%. The separated fractions were characterized, and preliminary kinetic investigations were used to reveal the reactivity of fractions obtained towards 4,4′-methylene diphenylene diisocyanate (MDI) in dioxane media. PU films were synthesized by casting the three component systems: lignin fraction – polyethylene glycol with a molecular weight of 400gmol−1 – polymeric methyl diisocyanate prepolymerized in tetrahydrofurane solution at a constant NCO/OH ratio of 1.05. The content of lignin in PU compositions was varied in a range of 5–40%. The PU films were characterized in terms of crosslink density, tensile properties, glass transition temperature and thermal stability. The obtained results show that the isolated fractions of Biolignin™ act as a crosslinking macromonomer in the PU network. Depending on the lignin fraction type and its content in the composition, the tensile properties of PU films with a high elastic state at room temperature or the tensile properties of glassy cross-linked films were obtained. Evidence for the activity of lignin fractions as antioxidants of PU compositions and charcoal formation promoters in the case of the high temperature treatment of PU in air was obtained.

Preparation of Mechanically Robust Bio-Based Polyurethane Foams Using Depolymerized Native Lignin

Abstract:Native lignin, a major structural polymer in lignocellulosic biomass, offers unique advantages as a feedstock for high-performance bio-based polymeric materials. In this work, depolymerized native lignin was utilized as a polyol in the synthesis of rigid bio-based polyurethane (PU) foams. Lignin in Pinus radiata wood was subjected to a pilot-scale hydrogenolysis process to obtain a depolymerized native lignin oil that was composed of monomers, dimers, and oligomers of predominant dihydroconiferyl alcohol and 4-propyl guaiacol. These lignin-derived polyols had low molecular weight, high hydroxyl group content, and good copolyol solubility, all of which were advantageous factors in preparing PU foams. The whole lignin oil, or fractions of the oil, was incorporated into PU foams by substituting sorbitol polyether polyol at 12.5–50 wt % to boost the bio-based content. Substituting with lignin-derived polyols led to foams with similar densities and thermal properties and substantially improved compression properties. The monomeric-/dimeric-rich fraction of the lignin oil, when incorporated at 33 or 50 wt % of the polyol, led to 100 and 61% improvements in compression modulus and strength in the resulting PU foams. The dimeric polyols in the lignin oil were principally responsible for enhancing the resistance of the foam to mechanical compression. Abstract:This work demonstrates an organic solvent fractionation method for lignin homogenization, which can effectively reduce the lignin heterogeneity and use each lignin fraction to prepare polyurethane foams (PUFs) with excellent mechanical properties. Such fractions were fully characterized by GPC, NMR (31P, 2D-HSQC), FTIR, and TG to obtain a detailed description of the structures and properties. The properties of PUFs from each lignin fraction showed higher compatibility than that from unfractionated industrial lignin, as studied by morphology and DSC analysis. The improvement of compatibility between the fractionated lignin fractions and polyethylene glycol can effectively enhance the mechanical properties of the prepared PUFs. The hysteresis loss (43.10%–51.85%) and resilience (95.81%–98.81%) of the fractionated lignin polyurethane foams (LPUFs) were better than that from the unfractionated LPUFs (hysteresis loss 41.64%, resilience 94.67%) at the lignin content of 5%. Subsequently, the strong relationships between lignin structures and PUF properties were demonstrated in detail. The suggested approach provides greater possibilities to prepare LPUFs with tunable properties based on real industrial lignin fractions, rather than modified lignin.

Abstract:<p>Polyurethane (PU), as a polymer material with versatile product forms and excellent performance, is used in coatings, elastomers, adhesives, and foams widely. However, the raw materials (polyols and isocyanates) of PU are usually made using petroleum‐derived chemicals. With the concern for depletion of petroleum resources and the associated negative impact on the environment, developing technologies that can use renewable raw materials as feedstock has become a research hotspot. Lignin, as an abundant, natural, and renewable organic carbon resource, has been explored as raw material for making polyurethanes because it possesses rich hydroxyl groups on its surface. Meanwhile, compared to vegetable oils, lignin does not compete with food supply and performance of the resulting products is superior. Lignin or modified lignin has been shown to impart the polyurethane material with additional functionalities, such as UV‐blocking ability, hydrophobicity, and flame retardancy. However, the utilization of lignin has encountered some challenges, such as product isolation, heterogeneity, aggregation, steric hindrance, and low activity. This paper summarizes recent research progress on utilizing lignin and modified lignin for bio‐based polyurethane synthesis with a focus on elastomers and foams. Opportunities and challenges for application of the lignin‐based polyurethanes in various fields are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:Using cheap and green lignin as a partial substitute for petroleum-based polyols is highly attractive for sustainable development of polyurethane elastomers (LPUes). However, the traditional synthesis process of LPUes inevitably uses toxic solvents that are difficult to remove or carcinogenic. Here, we reported a solvent-free synthesis method to prepare lignin-containing polyurethane elastomers (SF-LPUes) with high strength, high toughness and high elasticity. Most of the hydroxyl groups of lignin reacted with isocyanates to form a strong chemical cross-linking network, while the unreacted ones formed a dynamic hydrogen bond network with polyurethane matrix, contributing to the in-situ formation of lignin nanoparticles to build a nano-micro phase separation structure. Consequently, a dual-crosslinking network structure was formed and endowed SF-LPUes with excellent mechanical properties. Especially, the SF-LPUes prepared from low molecular alkali lignin possessed a tensile strength as high as 38.2 MPa, a maximum elongation at break of 1108 %, and an elastic recovery ratio of up to 98.7 %. Moreover, SF-LPUes showed impressing reprocessing performance and aging resistance. This work provides an industrial application prospect for the synthesis of lignin-containing polyurethane elastomers via a solvent-free synthesis process.

Abstract:Nowadays, polyols are basic chemicals for the synthesis of a large range of polymers, such as polyurethane foams (PUF), which are produced with several other compounds, such as polyisocyanates. During the last decades, the oleo-chemistry has developed several routes from glycerides to polyols for the polyurethanes (PU) industry to replace mainly conventional fossil-based polyols. A large range of biobased polyols can be now obtained by epoxidation of the double bonds and ring-opening (RO) of the subsequent epoxides with different chemical moieties. In preliminary studies, the RO kinetics of an epoxidized model molecule (methyl oleate) with ethanol and acetic acid were investigated. Subsequently, polyols that were derived from unsaturated triglycerides were explored in the frame of e.g., PUF formulations. Different associations were studied with different mono-alcohols derived from epoxidized and ring-opened methyl oleate while using several ring-openers to model such systems and for comparison purposes. Kinetic studies were realized with the pseudo-first-order principle, meaning that hydroxyls are in large excess when compared to the isocyanate groups. The rate of isocyanate consumption was found to be dependent on the moiety located in β-position of the reactive hydroxyl, following this specific order: tertiary amine >> ether > ester. The tertiary amine in β-position of the hydroxyl tremendously increases the reactivity toward isocyanate. Consequently, a biobased reactive polyurethane catalyst was synthesized from unsaturated glycerides. These approaches offer new insights regarding the replacement of current catalysts often harmful, pungent, and volatile used in PU and PUF industry, in order to revisit this chemistry.

Abstract:Three different formulations of bio-based polyurethane (PU), varying the weight ratio between Organosolv lignin and a commercial isocyanate, were synthesized. The coating formulations were characterized by SEM, pyrolysis-GC/MS, FTIR spectroscopy and FTIR mapping, which confirmed the successful formation of urethane bonds between commercial isocyanate and hydroxyl groups deriving from lignin. The coatings were applied on beech wood samples to measure color and contact angles, and eventually FTIR mapping of the coated wood samples was performed. FTIR mapping is an interesting tool to monitor the distribution of PU chemical bonds on the coating surface and to evaluate the homogeneity of the applied coating films. Increasing the lignin content of the PU coatings results in more red-yellow and darker tones, while the commercial PU coating is transparent. For a higher lignin concentration, the solid content as well as the weight gain of the applied coatings increase. A higher percentage of lignin in the prepared PU formulations leads to superficial cracks and therefore higher coating permeability compared to the commercial PU, but the prepared lignin-based PU coating still makes a raw wood surface significantly more hydrophobic. Apparently, additives such as film-formers with low surface tension to counteract cracks’ formation are necessary to improve the performance of lignin-based PU coatings.

Fractionated lignin as a polyol in polyurethane fabrication

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper was to systematically evaluate the effect of lignin, which was fractioned by green solvents into different molecular weights and used as polyol in the production of polyurethane foams (PUF). The results indicated that the foams prepared with the lower molecular weight lignin had uniform and complete pore structure and improved the mechanical strength. However, the higher molecular weight fraction lignin improved the density and thermal stability of the foam more significantly at the expense of inferior mechanical strength and pore structure deficiency. When the substitution degree of lignin in the PUF was 2 %-30 %, 99.13 % of the lowest molecular weight lignin was participated in the reaction to produce PUF, which improved the elongation at break (Eb) and tensile strength (Ts) of PUF to 834 % and 0.90 MPa, respectively. Also, thermal stability and the amount of unreacted lignin in PUF were increased at a higher substitution degree of lignin in PUF.
New biobased high functionality polyols and their use in polyurethane coatings

Abstract:High-functionality polyols for application in polyurethanes (PUs) were prepared by epoxide ring-opening reactions from epoxidized sucrose esters of soybean oil-epoxidized sucrose soyates-in which secondary hydroxyl groups were generated from epoxides on fatty acid chains. Ester polyols were prepared by using a base-catalyzed acid-epoxy reaction with carboxylic acids (e.g., acetic acid); ether polyols were prepared by using an acid-catalyzed alcohol-epoxy reaction with monoalcohols (e.g., methanol). The polyols were characterized by using gel permeation chromatography, FTIR spectroscopy, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and viscosity measurements. PU thermosets were prepared by using aliphatic polyisocyanates based on isophorone diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate. The properties of the PUs were studied by performing tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, DSC, and thermogravimetric analysis. The properties of PU coatings on steel substrates were evaluated by using ASTM methods to determine coating hardness, adhesion, solvent resistance, and ductility. Compared to a soy triglyceride polyol, sucrose soyate polyols provide greater hardness and range of cross-link density to PU thermosets because of the unique structure of these macromolecules: well-defined compact structures with a rigid sucrose core coupled with high hydroxyl group functionality.

Abstract:Polyurethanes (PUs) are one of the most versatile polymeric materials, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. Currently, petroleum is still the main source of polyols and isocyanates, the two primary feedstocks used in the PU industry. However, due to future petroleum price uncertainties and the need for eco-friendly alternatives, recent efforts have focused on replacing petrol-based polyols and isocyanates with counterparts derived from renewable resources. In this study, waste cooking oil was used as feedstock to obtain polyols (POs) for new sustainable polyurethane foams (PUFs). POs with various hydroxyl numbers were synthesized through epoxidation followed by oxirane ring opening with diethylene glycol. By adjusting reagent amounts (acetic acid and H2O2), epoxidized oils (EOs) with different epoxidation degrees (50–90%) and, consequently, POs with different OH numbers (200–300 mg KOH/g) were obtained. Sustainable PUFs with high bio-based content were produced by mixing the bio-based POs with a commercial partially bio-based aliphatic isocyanate and using water as the blowing agent in the presence of a gelling catalyst and additives. Various water (4, 8, 15 php) and gelling catalyst (0, 1, 2 php) amounts were tested to assess their effect on foam properties. PUFs were also prepared using EOs instead of POs to investigate the potential use of EOs directly in PUF production. Characterization included morphological, chemical, physical, thermal, and mechanical analyses. The rigid PUFs exhibited high density (150–300 kg/m3) and stability up to 200 °C. The combined use of bio-based polyols with partially bio-based isocyanate and water enabled PUFs with a bio-based content of up to 77 wt.%. EOs demonstrated potential in PUF production by bypassing the second synthesis step, enhancing sustainability, and significantly reducing energy and costs; however, PUF formulations with EOs require optimization due to lower epoxy ring reactivity.

To investigate the effects of unmodified bio-based polyols on PU foam production, reactivity and morphology within PU composites was analyzed as well as mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting foams. Bio-based PU foam production was carried out after characterizing the reagents used in the foaming process (including hydroxyl group content, molecular weight distribution, and viscosity). To compare the resulting bio-based PU foams, control foam were produced without any bio-based polyol under the same experimental conditions. For lignin-incorporated PU foams, two types, LPU and lpu, were manufactured with index ratio of 1.01 and 1.3, respectively. The compressive strength of LPU foams increased with lignin content from 5 wt% (LPU5: 147 kPa) to 20 wt% (LPU20: 207 kPa), although it remained lower than that of the control foam (PU0: 326 kPa). Similarly, the compressive strength of lpu foams was lower than that of the control foam (pu0: 441 kPa), with values of 164 kPa (lpu5), 163 kPa (lpu10), 167 kPa (lpu15), and 147 kPa (lpu20). At 10 wt% lignin content, both foams (LPU10 and lpu10) exhibited the smallest and most homogenous pore sizes and structures. For castor oil-incorporated PU foams with an index of 1.01, denoted as CPU, increasing castor oil content resulted in larger cell sizes and void fractions, transitioning to an open-cell structure and decreasing the compressive strength of the foams from 284 kPa (CPU10) to 23 kPa (CPU100). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) results indicated the formation of characteristic urethane linkages in PU foams and confirmed that bio-based polyols were less reactive with isocyanate compared to traditional polyol. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that incorporating lignin and castor oil affected the thermal decomposition behavior. The thermal stability of lignin-incorporated PU foams improved as the lignin content increased with char yields increasing from 11.5 wt% (LPU5) to 15.8 wt% (LPU20) and from 12.4 wt% (lpu5) to 17.5 wt% (lpu20). Conversely, the addition of castor oil resulted in decreased thermal stability, with char yields decreasing from 10.6 wt% (CPU10) to 4.2 wt% (CPU100). This research provides a comprehensive understanding of PU foams incorporating unmodified biomass-derived polyols (lignin and castor oil), suggesting their potential for value-added utilization as bio-based products.

Abstract:The hydroxyl group contents of four technical lignins [Indulin AT (Meadwestvaco), Alcell (Repap), Curan 27‐11P (Borregaard LignoTech), and Sarkanda (Granit SA)] were investigated in view of their valorization as polyols in polyurethane synthesis. The different hydroxyl group contents were determined by the following methods: titration and 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, and 31P‐NMR spectroscopy. The titration method chosen was on the basis of a standard method commonly used to characterize commercial polyols for polyurethanes synthesis. The values of the total and phenolic hydroxyl contents determined by the different techniques were found to be in good agreement. For the total hydroxyl contents, coefficients of variation of 5.6% (Alcell), 3.2% (Indulin AT), 2.3% (Sarkanda), and 6.2% (Curan 27‐11P) were established. For the phenolic hydroxyl contents, a good correlation was observed between data obtained from 31P‐NMR and 13C‐NMR for all lignin samples, except for the Sarkanda lignin, for which a relatively high coefficient of variation (12.6%) was found. For softwood lignins (Indulin AT and Curan 27‐11P), the phenolic hydroxyl content determined by 1H‐NMR was always lower than that deduced from 31P‐NMR and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Various biobased polyphenols (lignins and condensed tannins) were derivatized with vinyl ethylene carbonate, a functional cyclic carbonate, to obtain multifunctional aromatic polymers bearing vinyl groups. The reaction was optimized on a condensed tannin and soda lignin. In both cases, full conversion of the phenol groups was achieved in only 1 h at 150 °C without solvent and with K2 CO3 as a cheap and safe catalyst. This reaction was later applied to other condensed tannins and technical lignins (Kraft and organosolv), showing only little dependence on the chemical structure of the polyphenols. The obtained derivatives were thoroughly characterized by 1 H and 31 P NMR spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and size-exclusion chromatography. The developed method was compared with previously published protocols for the introduction of vinyl groups on lignin, and shows promising advances toward the modification of biobased polyphenols according to green chemistry principles. The obtained macromolecules show great potential as highly versatile biobased aromatic building blocks for the synthesis of polymers through, for example, radical, metathesis, or thiol-ene reactions.
Efficient dissolution of lignin in novel ternary deep eutectic solvents and its application in polyurethane

Abstract:<p>Novel ternary deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were designed to efficiently dissolve the lignin for synthesizing the lignin-containing rigid polyurethane foam (LRPUF). These ternary DESs were constituted by choline chloride (ChCl), two hydrogen bond donors – glycerol (Gly) and polyethylene glycol (PEG-400). The maximum solubility of lignin in the sample DES-2 (ChCl:Gly:PEG-400 = 1:2:2) could up to 66.70 g/100 g solvent at 60 °C due to the hydrogen bonds are the main driving force, which was confirmed by the largest hydrogen bond basicity parameter β value and disappearance of crystalline peak. The main structure of the lignin did not change after dissolution in DES-2. The content of phenolic and total hydroxyl groups of the regenerated lignin increased, with reduction in their average molecular weights and polydispersity, indicating that the dissolution and regeneration of lignin in these ternary DESs can make it more homogeneous. The regenerated lignin was partially replacing for polyols in the LRPUF synthesis, the lignin replacement rate could up to 58.6% with good mechanical properties. The findings add to our understanding for efficient dissolution of lignin in DESs and for synthesizing the highly LRPUF.</p>

Abstract:To be conPolyols are versatile molecules present in many polymers' material belonging to and often essential to our daily life. A major part of biobased polyol is coming from sugar or vegetable oil and is in direct competition with food industry. CNSL is a promising non-edible renewable resource, directly extracted from the shell off the cashew nut. The interesting chemical structure of CNSL and its derivatives (cardanol, cardol) lead to the synthesis of original polyols with hydrophobic and internal plasticizing properties. Useful for the development of additive, such as surfactant, or soft polymers, CNSL polyols are progressively building its own seat at the polymer industry. Thus, this review focuses on CNSL as building block for various polyols. The many different chemical pathways leading to CNSL-based polyols are going to be reviewed and criticized. A certain focus will also be done about the use of these CNSL-based polyols as surfactants and polymer precursors and the contribution of their specific chemical structure (aromatic ring, long unsaturated alkyl chain) on the properties of the resulting polyesters or polyurethanes. firmed
