Abstract:Background: Lifting patients, administering medications to patients, maintaining patients’ personal hygiene and daily activities are key roles in traditional nursing practice. Nowadays, expanded roles, functions and challenges are added to the current nursing practice. Using advanced technology, managing new medication, facing tight work schedules, demanding social requirement and limited manpower contribute to addition of work hazard for nurses working in the hospital. For this sharing section, the speaker will use the holistic approach to browse the traditional and existing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues when nurses are working in a hospital setting. In addition, the speaker would like to use the nursing industry as an example to stimulate the audience to think about the resistance force in their workplace. Hopefully, it can bring up the idea not only for the management level to consider a practical and acceptable OHS approach in the worksite but also to trigger the frontline staff to build up their OHS ownership in order to form a health and safety culture in their working environment. Objective: To stimulate the management level to have holistic and long term OHS implementation strategic for the frontline nursing staff. Methods: Literature review, life experience and field inspection. Results: Right facility but wrong approach, level of knowledge, level of awareness and cultural belief are crucial to block the occupational injury/disease prevention in the health care sector. Discussion: It is time for the management level to review the existing policy as to whether it is appropriate and practical. Conclusion: To implement a success OHS program, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money if the service provider is supported by the top management and able to implement the program in a right attitude, which refers to building up the ownership culture on the service consumer instead of the top management.
