Abstract:Managers should not fear working in a unionized library. Unionization is higher in the nonprofit sector where managers do not feel the same economic pressures to maximize profits and to achieve the best possible results as in the corporate world. The union contract provides advantages including routinizing decisions, lessening the manager’s ability to make bad decisions, providing another feedback loop, and improving employee morale by giving workers some control over their working conditions. While management seldom bargains away the right to make key decisions, the union normally establishes rules that strengthen due process in key areas like firing. Contract negotiation is a critical step where both sides work toward a mutually acceptable agreement. Before accepting a position in a unionized library, managers should ask about union relations and examine their own leadership style to determine if they can manage in an environment where cooperation and following due process are essential.
