Abstract:Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and monolayer hexagonal BN (h-BN), are attractive for demonstrating fundamental physics in materials and potential applications in next-generation electronics. Atomic sheets containing hybridized bonds involving elements B, N and C over wide compositional ranges could result in new materials with properties complementary to those of graphene and h-BN, enabling a rich variety of electronic structures, properties and applications. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of large-area atomic layers of h-BNC material, consisting of hybridized, randomly distributed domains of h-BN and C phases with compositions ranging from pure BN to pure graphene. Our studies reveal that their structural features and bandgap are distinct from those of graphene, doped graphene and h-BN. This new form of hybrid h-BNC material enables the development of bandgap-engineered applications in electronics and optics and properties that are distinct from those of graphene and h-BN.

Abstract:The mechanical exfoliation of graphene from graphite provides the cornerstone for the synthesis of other 2D materials with layered bulk structures, such as hexagonal boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, and so on. However, the experimental production of 2D flat boron is challenging because bulk boron has very complex spatial structures and a rich variety of chemical properties. Therefore, the realization of 2D flat boron marks a milestone for the synthesis of 2D materials without layered bulk structures. The historical efforts in this field, particularly the most recent experimental progress, such as the growth of 2D flat boron on a metal substrate by chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy, or liquid exfoliation from bulk boron, are described.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), a layered material similar to graphite, is a promising dielectric. Monolayer h-BN, so-called "white graphene", has been isolated from bulk BN and could be useful as a complementary two-dimensional dielectric substrate for graphene electronics. Here we report the large area synthesis of h-BN Films consisting of two to five atomic layers, using chemical vapor deposition. These atomic films show a large optical energy band gap of 5.5 eV and are highly transparent over a broad wavelength range. The mechanical properties of the h-BN films, measured by nanoincientation, show 2D elastic modulus in the range of 200-500 N/m, which is corroborated by corresponding theoretical calculations.
Borophene: New Sensation in Flatland

Abstract:Borophene, a 2D allotrope of boron and the lightest elemental Dirac material, is the latest very promising 2D material owing to its unique structural and electronic characteristics of the X3 and β12 phases. The high atomic density on ridgelines of the β12 phase of borophene provides a substantial orbital overlap, which leads to an excellent electron density in the conduction level and thus to a highly metallic behavior. These unique structural characteristics and electronic properties of borophene attract significant scientific interest. Herein, approaches for crystal growth/synthesis of these unique nanostructures and their potential technological applications are discussed. Various substrate‐supported ultrahigh‐vacuum growth techniques for borophene, such as molecular beam epitaxy, atomic layer deposition, and chemical vapor deposition, along with their challenges, are also summarized. The sonochemical exfoliation and modified Hummer's technique for the synthesis of free‐standing borophene are also discussed. Solution‐phase exfoliation seems to address the scalability issues and expands the applications of these unique materials to various fields, including renewable energy devices and ultrafast sensors. Furthermore, the electronic, optical, thermal, and elastic properties of borophene are thoroughly discussed and are compared with those of graphene and its "cousins." Numerous frontline applications are envisaged and an outlook is presented.

Abstract:As a neighbor of carbon in the periodic table, boron exhibits versatile structural and electronic configurations, with its allotropes predicted to possess intriguing structures and properties. Since the experimental realization of two‐dimensional (2D) boron sheets (borophene) on Ag(111) substrates in 2015, the experimental study of the realization and characteristics of borophene has drawn increasing interest. In this review, we summarize the synthesis and properties of borophene, which are mainly based on experimental results. First, the synthesis of borophene on different substrates, as well as borophane and bilayer borophene, featuring unique phases and properties, are discussed. Next, the chemistry of borophene, such as oxidation, hydrogenation, and its integration into heterostructures with other materials, is summarized. We also mention a few works focused on the physical properties of borophene, specifically its electronic properties. Lastly, the brief outlook addresses challenges toward practical applications of borophene and possible solutions.

Abstract:Unlike graphene derived from graphite, borophenes represent a distinct class of synthetic two-dimensional materials devoid of analogous bulk-layered allotropes, leading to covalent bonding within borophenes instead of van der Waals (vdW) stacking. Our investigation focuses on 665 vdW-stacking boron bilayers to uncover potential bulk-layered boron allotropes through vdW stacking. Systematic high-throughput screening and stability analysis reveal a prevailing inclination toward covalently bonded layers in the majority of boron bilayers. However, an intriguing outlier emerges in δ5 borophene, demonstrating potential as a vdW-stacking candidate. We delve into electronic and topological structural similarities between δ5 borophene and graphene, shedding light on the structural integrity and stability of vdW-stacked boron structures across bilayers, multilayers, and bulk-layered allotropes. The δ5 borophene analogues exhibit metallic properties and characteristics of phonon-mediated superconductors, boasting a critical temperature near 22 K. This study paves the way for the concept of "borophite", a long-awaited boron analogue of graphite.

Abstract:Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) is an important two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, with many properties distinct from graphene. In this feature article, these unique properties and associated applications often not possible from graphene are outlined. The article starts with characterization and identification of atomically thin BN. It is followed by demonstrating their strong oxidation resistance at high temperatures and applications in protecting metals from oxidation and corrosion. As flat insulators, BN nanosheets are ideal dielectric substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and electronic devices based on 2D heterostructures. The light emission of BN nanosheets in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) and ultraviolet (UV) regions are also included for its scientific and technological importance. The last part is dedicated to synthesis, characterization, and optical properties of BN nanoribbons, a special form of nanosheets.

Insight into Two-Dimensional Borophene: Five-Center Bond and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity

Abstract:We report a previously unknown monolayer borophene allotrope and we call it super-B with a flat structure based on the ab initio calculations. It has good thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability compared with many other typical borophenes. We find that super-B has a fascinating chemical bond environment consisting of standard sp, sp2 hybridizations, and delocalized five-center three-electron $\pi$ bond, called $\pi$(5c-3e). This particular electronic structure plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the super-B chemically. By extra doping, super-B can be transformed into a Dirac material from pristine metal. Like graphene, it can also sustain tensile strain smaller than 24%, indicating superior flexibility. Moreover, due to the small atomic mass and large density of states at the Fermi level, super-B has the highest critical temperature Tc of 25.3 K in single-element superconductors at ambient conditions. We attribute this high Tc of super-B to the giant anharmonicity of two linear acoustic phonon branches and an unusually low optic phonon mode. These predictions provide new insight into the chemical nature of low dimensional boron nanostructures and highlight the potential applications of designing flexible devices and high Tc superconductors.

Abstract:A remarkable recent advancement has been the successful synthesis of two-dimensional boron monolayers on metal substrates. However, although up to 16 possible bulk allotropes of boron have been reported, none of them possess van der Waals (vdW) layered structures. In this work, starting from the experimentally synthesized monolayer boron sheet (β12 borophene), we explored the possibility for forming vdW layered bulk boron. We found that two β12 borophene sheets cannot form a stable vdW bilayer structure, as covalent-like B–B bonds are formed between them because of the peculiar bonding. Interestingly, when the covalently bonded bilayer borophene sheets are stacked on top of each other, three-dimensional (3D) layered structures are constructed via vdW interlayer interactions, rather than covalent. The 3D vdW layered structures were found to be dynamically stable. The interlayer binding energy is about 20 meV/Å2, which is close to the weakly bound graphene layers in graphite (∼16 meV/Å2). Furthermore, the density functional theory predicted electronic band structure testifies that these vdW bulk boron crystals can behave as good conductors. The insights obtained from this work suggest an opportunity to discover new vdW layered structures of bulk boron, which is expected to be crucial to numerous applications ranging from microelectronic devices to energy storage devices.

Abstract:In this Letter, we study the structural, electronic and elastic properties of single-layer striped borophene stacked on top of single-layer graphene. Through DFT calculation, we show that both the properties of striped borophene and graphene are not fully preserved in the novel heterostructure which obviously depend on the nature of the chemical bond between the layers. The obtained phonon spectrum confirms the stability of this compound. The divergence of branches in the band structure appears below the Fermi level in the K point in the first Brillouin zone. Moreover, this heterostructure possesses excellent elastic properties and can be considered for use in the field of 2D acousto- and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Boron, the fifth element in the period table, exhibits diverse bonding patterns and interesting structures due to its electron deficiency.Unlike its neighbor carbon, closed-packed boron sheet with graphene-like honeycomb lattice is unstable so that planar boron clusters usually have interior vacancies and corrugated appearance.Delocalized multicenter bonding has an important role to stabilize the 2D structures, giving rise to the concept of σ, π, …multiple aromaticity.The experimental observation of the B 36 -cluster in 2014 established the viability of boron monolayer which was named as "borophene" by Wang and Li.Recently, studies on planar CoB 18 -and RhB 18 -clusters have suggested the possibilities of metal-doped borophenes (metallo-borophenes) with potentially tunable electronic, magnetic and optical properties.In this review, we summarize recent experimental and theoretical advances in 2D pure-boron and metaldoped boron clusters, as well as their implications for borophenes and metalloborophenes as novel new boron materials.

Abstract:The successful realization of free-standing graphene and the various applications of its exotic properties have spurred tremendous research interest for two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. Besides graphene, many other 2D materials have been successfully produced by experiment, such as silicene, monolayer MoS2, few-layer black phosphorus and so on. As a neighbor of carbon in the periodic table, element boron is interesting and many researchers have contributed their efforts to realize boron related 2D structures. These structures may be significant both in fundamental science and future technical applications in nanoelectronics and nanodevices. In this review, we summarize the recent developments of 2D boron based materials. The theoretical design, possible experimental realization strategies and their potential technical applications are presented and discussed. Also, the current challenges and prospects of this area are discussed.

Abstract:Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) is an emerging star of 2D materials. It is taken as an optimal substrate for other 2D‐material‐based devices owing to its atomical flatness, absence of dangling bonds, and excellent stability. Specifically, h‐BN is found to be a natural hyperbolic material in the mid‐infrared range, as well as a piezoelectric material. All the unique properties are beneficial for novel applications in optoelectronics and electronics. Currently, most of these applications are merely based on exfoliated h‐BN flakes at their proof‐of‐concept stages. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is considered as the most promising approach for producing large‐scale, high‐quality, atomically thin h‐BN films and heterostructures. Herein, CVD synthesis of atomically thin h‐BN is the focus. Also, the growth kinetics are systematically investigated to point out general strategies for controllable and scalable preparation of single‐crystal h‐BN film. Meanwhile, epitaxial growth of 2D materials onto h‐BN and at its edge to construct heterostructures is summarized, emphasizing that the specific orientation of constituent parts in heterostructures can introduce novel properties. Finally, recent applications of atomically thin h‐BN and its heterostructures in optoelectronics and electronics are summarized.

Semimetallic Two-Dimensional Boron Allotrope with Massless Dirac Fermions

Abstract:It has been widely accepted that planar boron structures, composed of triangular and hexagonal motifs are the most stable two-dimensional (2D) phases and likely precursors for boron nanostructures. Here we predict, based on an ab initio evolutionary structure search, a novel 2D boron structure with nonzero thickness, which is considerably, by $50\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{meV}/\mathrm{atom}$, lower in energy than the recently proposed $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-sheet structure and its analogues. In particular, this phase is identified for the first time to have a distorted Dirac cone, after graphene and silicene the third elemental material with massless Dirac fermions. The buckling and coupling between the two sublattices not only enhance the energetic stability, but also are the key factors for the emergence of the distorted Dirac cone.
Dirac Nodal Lines and Tilted Semi-Dirac Cones Coexisting in a Striped Boron Sheet

Abstract:The enchanting Dirac fermions in graphene stimulated us to seek for other two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials, and boron monolayers may be a good candidate. So far, a number of monolayer boron sheets have been theoretically predicted, and three have been experimentally prepared. However, none of them possesses Dirac electrons. Herein, by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we identified a new boron monolayer, namely hr-sB, with two types of Dirac fermions coexisting in the sheet: one type is related to Dirac nodal lines traversing Brillouin zone (BZ) with velocities approaching 106 m/s, the other is related to tilted semi-Dirac cones with strong anisotropy. This newly predicted boron monolayer consists of hexagon and rhombus stripes. With an exceptional stability comparable to the experimentally achieved boron sheets, it is rather optimistic to grow hr-sB on some suitable substrates such as the Ag (111) surface. The unique electronic properties induced by special bond characteristics also imply that this boron monolayer may be a good superconductor.

Abstract:We investigate the electronic properties of heterostructures based on ultrathin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) crystalline layers sandwiched between two layers of graphene as well as other conducting materials (graphite, gold). The tunnel conductance depends exponentially on the number of h-BN atomic layers, down to a monolayer thickness. Exponential behaviour of I-V characteristics for graphene/BN/graphene and graphite/BN/graphite devices is determined mainly by the changes in the density of states with bias voltage in the electrodes. Conductive atomic force microscopy scans across h-BN terraces of different thickness reveal a high level of uniformity in the tunnel current. Our results demonstrate that atomically thin h-BN acts as a defect-free dielectric with a high breakdown field; it offers great potential for applications in tunnel devices and in field-effect transistors with a high carrier density in the conducting channel.
Mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of newly introduced graphene-like borophanes: a reactive molecular dynamics study

Abstract:A newly proposed borophane structure is characterised mechanically and thermally in this work by using a reactive molecular dynamics study. A full hexagonal lattice of borophene is connected with other hexagonal lattices by placing hydrogen atoms as the connecting bridges. It is found that hydrogenation improves the Young's modulus of armchair borophene significantly. However, this noticeable increase is not found in the case of thermal conductivity. There are only slight variations of thermal conductivity upon hydrogenation. The increase of temperature was then found to decrease the Young's modulus and thermal conductivity. The presence of a vacancy defect also diminishes the Young's modulus of borophene remarkably, yet this reduction is less significant when borophene is hydrogenated which shows the stabilising effect of hydrogenation on the mechanical properties of borophene. The removal of a single boron atom was also found to provide an insignificant reduction in thermal conductivity. Given the mechanical and thermal stabilities of the proposed borophane structure, this structure can also be used as an alternative to the recently synthesised H1B1 hydrogen boride sheet. It is expected that this work will provide meaningful insights for the design of on-board hydrogen storage applications.
Synthesis of Atomically Thin Boron Films on Copper Foils

Abstract:Two-dimensional boron materials have recently attracted extensive theoretical interest because of their exceptional structural complexity and remarkable physical and chemical properties. However, such 2D boron monolayers have still not been synthesized. In this report, the synthesis of atomically thin 2D γ-boron films on copper foils is achieved by chemical vapor deposition using a mixture of pure boron and boron oxide powders as the boron source and hydrogen gas as the carrier gas. Strikingly, the optical band gap of the boron film was measured to be around 2.25 eV, which is close to the value (2.07 eV) determined by first-principles calculations, suggesting that the γ-B28 monolayer is a fascinating direct band gap semiconductor. Furthermore, a strong photoluminescence emission band was observed at approximately 626 nm, which is again due to the direct band gap. This study could pave the way for applications of two-dimensional boron materials in electronic and photonic devices.

Abstract:Borophene, a two-dimensional material with excellent properties, has attracted significant attention since its synthesis in 2015 due to its potential applications electronics, energy storage, transport, catalysis, plasmonics, superconductivity, sensor, and more. Borophene's unique properties, such as 2D metallic properties, ideal flexibility and strength, antiferromagnetism, and excellent gas-sensing properties, have made it a promising material for use in various fields. In particular, the strength and flexibility of borophene make it an ideal candidate for the design of various devices, and its large surface zone and exceptional conductance make it suitable for use in energy storage devices and electrode material. While borophene is a relatively new material, its synthesis has advanced significantly in recent years. This review introduces several monolayer borophenes synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy on metal substrates, followed by a discussion of two successfully synthesized bilayer borophenes and four borophene-based heterostructures. These developments have opened new possibilities for the integration of borophene into nanodevice applications.
