Abstract:The superhydrophobic surface (SHS) is attractive for drag reduction, anti-icing, and anti-fouling, but its insufficient non-wetting property has limited its applications. This study aims to fabricate, characterize, and evaluate SHS with excellent non-wetting properties. The SHS is fabricated via electrochemical treatments and silanization, changing superhydrophilic porous titanium substrates into superhydrophobicity. Hierarchical micro/nano-structures and low-energy coating are created on substrates with interconnected micropores, resulting in high static contact angle (SCA) air-permeable SHS (i.e. SCA = 152.5 degrees). The non-wetting property of the SHS, characterized by the interfacial reflection intensity, is reversibly recovered in the turbulent water flow test. An excellent non-wetting property is achieved by actively minimizing the pressure difference across the surface.

Abstract:The present work reports on a new strategy for fabrication of mechanically stable and environmental‐friendly superhydrophobic surfaces. First, a novel cost‐effective approach is developed to synthesize superhydrophobic SiO2 (SH‐SiO2) nanoparticles at room temperature through the reaction between the surface reactive groups on commercial SiO2 nanoparticles and the long‐chain alkyl fluorine‐free organosilane. Then, the superhydrophobic films are constructed by electrophoresis of SH‐SiO2 nanoparticles into a matrix of robust and highly porous electrodeposited silica film. The as‐prepared superhydrophobic composite surfaces exhibit high abrasion resistance, excellent repellency even to hot water droplet, and good self‐cleaning properties in either air or oil environment.

Abstract:On account of their wide range of applications in self-cleaning, anti-icing, frost suppression, etc., superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted considerate attention. However, most of the superhydrophobic surfaces can only be prepared on the surfaces of specific materials and are easily damaged in the case of friction. In this work, we propose a facile method to achieve superhydrophobicity on various substrate surfaces. By femtosecond laser direct processing, micron-level grooves and protrusions are constructed on substrates to form a protective layer. Then, the substrates covered by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were scanned to make the surfaces of the substrates superhydrophobic. Since the PTFE micro-nano-particles are evenly distributed on the grooves and protrusions, the surfaces exhibit robust superhydrophobicity with excellent anti-friction performance that is independent of the substrate properties. This work provides an efficient and environmentally friendly path for achieving robust superhydrophobic surfaces on various substrates.

Abstract:The ability of superhydrophobic surfaces to stay dry, self-clean and avoid biofouling is attractive for applications in biotechnology, medicine and heat transfer<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2331-8#ref-CR10">10</a>. Water droplets that contact these surfaces must have large apparent contact angles (greater than 150 degrees) and small roll-off angles (less than 10 degrees). This can be realized for surfaces that have low-surface-energy chemistry and micro- or nanoscale surface roughness, minimizing contact between the liquid and the solid surface<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="#ref-CR14">14</a>,<a href="#ref-CR15">15</a>,<a href="#ref-CR16">16</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2331-8#ref-CR17">17</a>. However, rough surfaces—for which only a small fraction of the overall area is in contact with the liquid—experience high local pressures under mechanical load, making them fragile and highly susceptible to abrasion<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2331-8#ref-CR18">18</a>. Additionally, abrasion exposes underlying materials and may change the local nature of the surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2331-8#ref-CR19">19</a>, resulting in the pinning of water droplets to the surface. It has therefore been assumed that mechanical robustness and water repellency are mutually exclusive surface properties. Here we show that robust superhydrophobicity can be realized by structuring surfaces at two different length scales, with a nanostructure design to provide water repellency and a microstructure design to provide durability. The microstructure is an interconnected surface frame containing 'pockets' that house highly water-repellent and mechanically fragile nanostructures. This surface frame acts as 'armour', preventing the removal of the nanostructures by abradants that are larger than the frame size. We apply this strategy to various substrates—including silicon, ceramic, metal and transparent glass—and show that the water repellency of the resulting superhydrophobic surfaces is preserved even after abrasion by sandpaper and by a sharp steel blade. We suggest that this transparent, mechanically robust, self-cleaning glass could help to negate the dust-contamination issue that leads to a loss of efficiency in solar cells. Our design strategy could also guide the development of other materials that need to retain effective self-cleaning, anti-fouling or heat-transfer abilities in harsh operating environments.

Abstract:Development of superhydrophobic self-cleaning materials is hindered by their susceptibility to mechanical abrasion. Here, to solve the problem caused by mechanical damage, we prepared a superhydrophobic metal/polymer composite surface possessing both mechanical durability and easy repairability. The mechanical durability of the resulting superhydrophobic surface was evaluated by the abrasion test. The result demonstrated that the rough surface textures were retained and the surface still exhibited superhydrophobicity after mechanical abrasion. Moreover, the non-wetting property can be restored by an easy regeneration process when loss of superhydrophobicity occurs. Amazingly, the created metal/polymer surface can be used as a finger touchable self-cleaning surface.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces with micro-/nanohierarchical structures are mechanically weak. Generally, organic solvents are used to dissolve or disperse organic adhesives and modifiers to enhance the mechanical strength of superhydrophobic surfaces. In this work, an all-water-based spraying solution is developed for the preparation of robust superhydrophobic surfaces, which contains ZnO nanoparticles, aluminum phosphate as an inorganic adhesive, and polytetrafluoroethylene with low surface energy. The all-water-based system is appreciated for low price and less pollution. Importantly, the prepared superhydrophobic surfaces are durable enough against various harsh conditions (such as UV irradiation for 12 h, pH values from 1 to 13, and temperatures from -10 to 300 °C for 12 h) and physical damages (including sandpaper abrasion and sand impact tests for 50 cycles). In addition, the obtained interfacial materials show promise for practical applications such as anti-icing and oil-water separation.

Abstract:Preparation of mechanically durable superwetting surfaces is imperative, yet challenging for the wide range of real applications where high durability is required. Mechanical wear on superwetting surfaces usually degrades weak roughness, leading to loss of functions. In this study, wear-resistant superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces are prepared by anchoring reinforced coatings via adhesive-swelling and adhesive-bonding processes, respectively. The results of the sandpaper abrasion (grit no. 600, 24 kPa) show that superhydrophilic nylon/SiO2 coatings and superhydrophobic polyurethane/TiO2 coatings retain their functions after suffering the abrasion distances of 70 cm and more than 1000 cm, respectively. Reinforced coatings formed by consecutive roughness and improved adhesion between coatings and substrates are responsible for repeatedly generated superwettability after exposure to mechanical stresses and demonstrated to be feasible for designing wear-resistant superwetting surfaces. Furthermore, this novel architecture of "reinforced coating with consecutive roughness + high adhesion" may demand desired coating materials and reliable coating-fixing techniques for sustaining sufficient roughness and is superior to currently existing technologies in advancing wear-resistance of superwetting surfaces.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces with uniformly superhydrophobic surface where nano-scale structures were fabricated by alkali surface modification method and self-assembled monolayer coating. To enhance mechanical durability of the superhydrophobicity, we propose the fabrication process for dual-scale hierarchical structures combining both microstructure via sandblasting techniques and the nanostructured aluminum hydroxide layer. The superhydrophobic surfaces fabricated by both methods exhibited a high water contact angle and very low contact angle hysteresis. By forming the hierarchical structure, the mechanical durability of superhydrophobic aluminum hydroxide surface was improved. The resulting hierarchical structures are suitable for diverse applications of aluminum in various industrial areas, including self-cleaning, anti-frosting, and microfluidic devices for rigorous environments.

Abstract:Preparing underwater superoleophobic surface is an effective method to solve the problems of oil adhesion on the underwater surfaces and oil spill in water. However, the underwater superoleophobic surfaces at present are not reliable in practical application due to their poor stability under corrosion and abrasion. Herein, we proposed a facile method to fabricate a robust superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface. The surface is combined with micro honeycomb frame structure and nanostructure, which was fabricated by laser ablation. The surface with the honeycomb pattern shows strong hydrophilicity with a water contact angle of 0° and stable underwater oil repellency with an underwater oil contact angle of 164.9°. Furthermore, it can maintain its excellent underwater superoleophobic performance after 120 cycles of abrasion and corrosion of 6 h at pH = 1–14.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted broad attention because of their unique water repellency but are restricted by poor wear resistance, weak adhesion to the substrate, and complex fabrication processes. Herein, a double-layer coating strategy consisting of the amino fluorine-silicone resin/epoxy resin (AFSR/EP) system is created. The system features a high hardness and transparent hydrophobic interface adhesive layer through the amine-epoxy "click" chemical reaction. The environmentally friendly resin system and low-cost nano-silica particles (n-SiO2) are composited and sprayed onto the substrate surface to form a superhydrophobic layer with outstanding robustness and excellent environmental stability. The prepared AFSR/EP@n-SiO2 composite coatings have a water contact angle of 161.1° and a sliding angle of 3.4°, demonstrating high superhydrophobic properties. Benefitting from the complementary advantages of silicone/epoxy resin, the prepared composite coatings maintain remarkable water repellency after various harsh environmental tests, including cyclic mechanical abrasion and tape-stripping, acid-base (pH 1 and pH 14) treatment, 10 wt% NaCl (pH 7) salt solution immersion, temperature treatment, knife scratching, and long-term ultraviolet radiation treatment, showing reinforced mechanical robustness and durable anti-corrosion stability. Notably, surface hardness of 5H and optical transparency over 80% can be achieved. The simple method offers a novel approach for the large-scale preparation of multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract:Inspired by nature, artificial superhydrophobic surfaces with high mechanical/chemical robustness have been fabricated successfully and have drawn much attention in recent decades. With the rapid development and extensive demand of superhydrophobic surfaces, creating a universal superhydrophobic coating, which can be used for hard and soft substrates as well as can resist large shape-deformations without losing surface anti-wetting property, is of urgent requirement but is still a challenge. Here, we prepare an ultra-stretchable and fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating to develop robust and multi-functional surfaces. The as-created surfaces display strong resistance to extremely stretching, different mechanical treatments, chemical corrosions, high/low temperature, and UV irradiation without losing superhydrophobic property. Additionally, such coating can endow contaminant absorption, oil/water separation, and self-cleaning functions to different substrates and displays excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria due to the presence of N+ on the surface. With the multifaceted advantages, the coating can be potentially used in chemical engineering, infrastructure and transportation facility.

Abstract:The practical applications of superhydrophobic surfaces are often hampered by some disadvantages such as sophisticated preparation procedures, poor durability, and expensive raw materials. In this work, we provide a simple, low-cost, and versatile strategy to fabricate robust and multifunctional superhydrophobic surfaces. In virtue of the flexibility of commercial adhesives, waste fly ash particles coated with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane were bonded firmly on various substrates to render them superhydrophobicity. The prepared surface showed superhydrophobic and self-cleaning performances both in air and oil. Meanwhile, it exhibited excellent mechanical durability against knife scratch and sandpaper abrasion. Besides, the prepared surface remained superhydrophobic after UV irradiation for 72 h, heating up to 180 degrees C, and storage for 6 months. Moreover, great anti-icing performance of the prepared surface demonstrated its good practicability in cold-climate weather. Apart from these general properties, the novel and simple fabrication method of various superhydrophobic patterns further widen its promising potential applications in real life.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) have drawn a lot of interest in both academic and industry by its special wettability, but most artificial SHSs suffer from their poor hydrophobic and mechanical durability. Here, a durable PVDF/FAC-SiO2/CNF superhydrophobic coating (SHC) was successfully fabricated by designing “egg-shell” and “web-like” structures. We have in situ loaded nano-SiO2 particles on the azodicarbonamide (AC) surface to provide a layer of barrier, which can prompt the formation of a special egg-shell structure after AC thermal decomposition. Moreover, CNF divided the pore structure to smaller spaces by forming web-like structure in the coating surface. Cooperation of the egg-shell and web-like structures, the PVDF/FAC-SiO2/CNF SHC surface can lock the gas stably and block the diffusion of corrosive media into the coating. Therefore, the prepared PVDF/FAC-SiO2/CNF coating can withstand 250 kPa water flow impact and possesses high charge transfer resistance (1.44 × 1010 Ω cm2) after 30 d immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Furthermore, the prepared coating also exhibited outstanding mechanical and hydrophobic stability, which can maintain its superhydrophobicity even after 1000 abrasion cycles, hot water immersion, or dealing with 98% H2SO4. This fabrication process is scalable and provides a new avenue for the fabrication of robust superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract:Fly ash (FA) is an industrial solid waste which adds burden to the environment. Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) are widely or potentially applied in various fields, like self-cleaning, drag reduction, oil/water separation, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, and so on. This paper proposes a novel and facile way to reutilize varisized FA particles to prepare superhydrophobic coatings which exhibit excellent water-repellency and mechanical wear resistance. The FA particles undergo chemical modification (MFA), then physically mixing with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and finally spraying or dipping to obtain the nano/micro, nano-micro, and nano-micro-submillimeter hydrophobic/superhydrophobic surfaces () on versatile substrates. The coating shows that the nano-micro co-existed particles could achieve the best superhydrophobic property with excellent water-repellency and mechanical wear resistance. The results of SEM, FITR and contact angle indicate that the surface of FA was roughened after modification and the wettability of MFA particles transferred from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. The prepared nano-micro coating remains superhydrophobic even after 60 times unidirectional abrasion under 500 g weight, due to the fact that the presence of polydimethylsiloxane enhanced the binding force between inter-particles as well as particle-substrate. In addition, it was demonstrated that the nano-micro SHSs could effectively separate the oil/water mixtures.

Abstract:Surfaces with superhydrophobicity are important in a number of biological and industrial processes. Hierarchical film based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and SiO2 with a water contact angle of 155° and sliding angle of 6° was prepared by a facile drop-coating method. Surface modification of SiO2 spheres was found to improve particle dispersion and increase their compatibility with PDMS, which eventually affected the stability of the hierarchical structure. Different curing temperatures were studied for enhancing the hydrophobicity of the hierarchical structure. We examined the mechanical robustness of the superhydrophobic surface by using a shear test, and found that the hierarchical PDMS-based SiO2 films retained superhydrophobicity after 48KPa mechanical shears.
