Abstract:Human cooperation can be influenced by other human behaviors and recent years have witnessed the flourishing of studying the coevolution of cooperation and punishment, yet the common behavior of charity is seldom considered in game-theoretical models. In this article, we investigate the coevolution of altruistic cooperation and egalitarian charity in spatial public goods game, by considering charity as the behavior of reducing inter-individual payoff differences. Our model is that, in each generation of the evolution, individuals play games first and accumulate payoff benefits, and then each egalitarian makes a charity donation by payoff transfer in its neighborhood. To study the individual-level evolutionary dynamics, we adopt different strategy update rules and investigate their effects on charity and cooperation. These rules can be classified into two global rules: random selection rule in which individuals randomly update strategies, and threshold selection rule where only those with payoffs below a threshold update strategies. Simulation results show that random selection enhances the cooperation level, while threshold selection lowers the threshold of the multiplication factor to maintain cooperation. When charity is considered, it is incapable in promoting cooperation under random selection, whereas it promotes cooperation under threshold selection. Interestingly, the evolution of charity strongly depends on the dispersion of payoff acquisitions of the population, which agrees with previous results. Our work may shed light on understanding human egalitarianism.

Abstract:The Centipede game provides a dynamic model of cooperation and competition in repeated dyadic interactions. Two experiments investigated psychological factors driving cooperation in 20 rounds of a Centipede game with significant monetary incentives and anonymous and random re-pairing of players after every round. The main purpose of the research was to determine whether the pattern of strategic choices observed when no specific social value orientation is experimentally induced--the standard condition in all previous investigations of behavior in the Centipede and most other experimental games--is essentially individualistic, the orthodox game-theoretic assumption being that players are individualistically motivated in the absence of any specific motivational induction. Participants in whom no specific state social value orientation was induced exhibited moderately non-cooperative play that differed significantly from the pattern found when an individualistic orientation was induced. In both experiments, the neutral treatment condition, in which no orientation was induced, elicited competitive behavior resembling behavior in the condition in which a competitive orientation was explicitly induced. Trait social value orientation, measured with a questionnaire, influenced cooperation differently depending on the experimentally induced state social value orientation. Cooperative trait social value orientation was a significant predictor of cooperation and, to a lesser degree, experimentally induced competitive orientation was a significant predictor of non-cooperation. The experimental results imply that the standard assumption of individualistic motivation in experimental games may not be valid, and that the results of such investigations need to take into account the possibility that players are competitively motivated.

Abstract:Both the strategy social punishment defined as the special cooperation and playing multigames could lead to the enhancement of cooperation in social dilemmas. To take this into consideration, we introduce multigames with social punishment and investigate the evolution of cooperation. In our work, the population is randomly divided into two types. Players of type A, whose proportion is v, adopt a negative value of the sucker’s payoff to play the Prisoner’s Dilemma (PD), while players of type B, whose proportion is 1−v, adopt a positive value to play Snowdrift (SD). Meanwhile, three strategies can be selected, including cooperation, defection, and punishment. We show that for the larger temptation to defect, the cooperation can be enhanced by the diversity of sucker’s payoff. In addition, when the contribution of sucker’s payoff is larger or less players choose to play PD, the cooperators become more dominated, which can be explained by the special spatial distribution of the two types of players.

Abstract:In the real life, we often simultaneously encounter various social dilemmas, which are also inclined to be voluntarily participated in, instead of previous assumption's compulsory participation in. Accounting on this realistic scenario, we have introduced the mechanism that the individuals have access to different payoff matrices corresponding to different social dilemmas to participate in the multigame with three strategies to choose, including cooperation, defection, going it alone. Furthermore, we set a proportion ψ/2 of the population to play the Prisoner's Dilemma, a proportion ψ/2 of the population to play Snowdrift and a proportion 1−ψ of the population to play the weak Prisoner's Dilemma, which results in the fact that the mean payoff matrix returns to the basic weak PD. Though numerical simulations, we find that for the smaller temptation to defect, the cooperation can be enhanced by the diversity of the sucker's payoff in the multigame contrast to the basic case. In addition, when the contribution of sucker's payoff is larger or more players choose to play the Prisoner's Dilemma and Snowdrift, the cooperators become more dominated.

Abstract:Investigating and addressing the issue of social dilemma is a continuing concern within the subject of behavioral sciences and collective cooperation. The research to date has mostly focused on outside control methods dealing with the existing dilemma rather than exploring the reason resulting in that inside. This work probes into the in-herent inducement for cooperation dilemma. We construct a gaming environment in which thousands of ran-dom memory-one strategies interact with each other on different complex topologies and record dominant strategies winning out from self-organized evolution. After clustering and analyzing evolutionary results, we find that the randomness and heterogeneity of population structure will strengthen the fitness of defectors. Besides, the cooperative willingness of individuals in betrayal situation has a decisive impact on the cooperation level of groups at equilibrium state. Further, we present two innovative treatments, enforcement and punish-ment mechanisms, to promote collective cooperation. The promoting effect is checked on various spatially networked topologies in the iterated prisoner's dilemma game. Simulation results indicate that irrespective of the underlying interaction network, the introduced promotion mechanisms are universally effective in subduing the evolutionary advantage of defectors, which favors the emergence and sustainability of cooperative behaviors. Our novel conclusions may provide some new perspectives for enhancing cooperation and elevating social wel-fare within biological systems and human societies.
