Abstract:We explore model-form error and how to correct it in systems of ordinary differential equations. In particular, we focus on the Lotka–Volterra equations, which are used broadly in fields such as ecology, biology, economics, chemistry, and physics. Accounting for every object and their complex interactions with a complete model often becomes infeasible, thereby requiring reduced models. However, reduced models may omit vital relationships, resulting in discrepancies between reduced model predictions and observations from the true system. In this work, we propose a model correction framework for decreasing such discrepancies. Specifically, we embed a stochastic enrichment operator into the reduced model’s system of equations. The enrichment operator is theory-informed, calibrated with observations from the complete model, and extended to extrapolative combinations of parameters and initial conditions. The complete model involves N species, while the reduced and enriched models only track M<N species. Numerical results show the enriched models significantly decrease discrepancies, consistently predict equilibria, and improve the species’ transient behavior.

Abstract:This paper surveys an assortment of theoretical models, all bearing on the question of population stability in multi-species communities. Overall, the review is directed at the field and laboratory ecologist, and aims to be interpretive and non-mathematical. The main conclusion, derived from several independent lines of argument, is that, in general multi-species mathematical models, increased complexity tends to diminish rather than enhance stability. Although stability and complexity may go together in the real world, such stability must be the result of quite special strategies, and is not a mathematical consequence of complexity per se. Various minor points are also raised, among them being: the occurrence of stable" limit cycle" oscillations; the role played by timedelays in feedback mechanisms, and the way that addition of extra trophic levels can stabilise them; the relation between stability within one trophic level and total web stability; why strong predator-prey links are liable to be more common in Nature than strong symbiotic links.

Abstract:This article investigates the stability property of the boundary equilibria of an ecological model of mutualism between two species with a mortal predator. The model was proposed by Srinivasarao Tote (On an ecological model of mutualism between two species with a mortal predator, Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal, 15(2)(2020): 1309-1322). We first give two numeric examples to show that the main results of Tote may not be correct. Then, by applying the standard comparison theorem, we obtain a set of sufficient conditions which ensure the global attractivity of the predator-washed state. We also demonstrate that the second mutual species washed state is unstable. Our results complement and supplement the main results of Srinivasarao Tote.

Abstract:We further pursue an investigation on an abstract model characterizing the dynamics of a general class of n-species facultative mutualisms that was initiated in Georgescu et al. (2017), establishing biologically relevant sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the coexistence equilibria. These conditions are given in terms of per-species limits of growth-to-loss ratios computed at higher population densities, complemented by either monotonicity or sublinearity inequalities, and are observed to hold for n-species versions of mutualistic models in current use. The specific modeling details that require either of these conditions being satisfied are outlined and discussed. As mutualisms can enhance species diversification and facilitate stable coexistence via a plethora of mechanisms, it is then important to understand the stability of speciose mutualisms, our results being of potential interest to theoretical ecologists studying the coexistence of many interacting species and to conservationists aiming for rare species preservation.

Abstract:If a biological or other system has a potentially stabilizing negative feedback mechanism, which, however, is applied with a time lag long compared to the natural time scale of the system, the result is instability, not stability. This theme is developed in detail for vegetation—herbivore and vegetation—herbivore—carnivore systems in which the stabilizing resource—limitation effect operates on the herbivore population with a time lag. Under certain conditions, which are commonly met in nature, the vegetation—herbivore—carnivore system is stable (with population fluctuations being damped out), while the vegetation—herbivore system with no predators is unstable. This model, which can be supported with some observational data, suggests inter alia that herbivore population numbers may often be set neither by predators alone nor by vegetation alone, but by an explicit interplay between both effects.

Abstract:Mutualistic communities have an internal structure that makes them resilient to external per- turbations. Late research has focused on their stability and the topology of the relations between the different organisms to explain the reasons of the system robustness. Much less attention has been invested in analyzing the systems dynamics. The main population models in use are modifi- cations of the logistic equation with additional terms to account for the benefits produced by the interspecific interactions. These models have shortcomings as the so called r - K formulation of logistic equation diverges under some conditions. In this work, we introduce a model for population dynamics under mutualism inspired by the logistic equation but avoiding singularities. The model is mathematically simpler than the widely used type II models, although it shows similar complexity in terms of fixed points and stability of the dynamics. Furthermore, each term of our model has a more direct ecological interpretation, which can facilitate the measurement of the rates involved in field campaigns. We perform an analytical stability analysis and numerical simulations to study the model behavior in more general interaction scenarios including tests of the resilience of its dynamics under external perturbations. Despite its simplicity, our results indicate that the model dynamics shows an important richness that can be used to gain further insights in the dynamics of mutualistic communities.

Abstract:Forty years ago, Robert May questioned a central belief in ecology by proving that sufficiently large or complex ecological networks have probability of persisting close to zero. To prove this point, he analyzed large networks in which species interact at random. However, in natural systems pairs of species have well-defined interactions (e.g., predator-prey, mutualistic or competitive). Here we extend May's results to these relationships and find remarkable differences between predator-prey interactions, which increase stability, and mutualistic and competitive, which are destabilizing. We provide analytic stability criteria for all cases. These results have broad applicability in ecology. For example, we show that, surprisingly, the probability of stability for predator-prey networks is decreased when we impose realistic food web structure or we introduce a large preponderance of weak interactions. Similarly, stability is negatively impacted by nestedness in bipartite mutualistic networks.
