Abstract:To realize water and resource recovery from anaerobically digested manure centrate, the effect of combined coagulation and membrane treatment on contaminant residuals and membrane fouling was investigated. Two combined treatments were used to explore the properties of the retention of nutrients and the removal of risk pollutants. Behaviors and reversibility of membrane fouling after combined treatment were also examined. The result showed that the combined treatment significantly improved the water recovery rate by more than 60% and achieved better nutrient enrichment. Meanwhile, the combined treatment had certain removal effects on heavy metals and antibiotics, which promoted the safety of farmland utilization of anaerobically digested manure centrate. Moreover, the combined treatment reduced the membrane fouling by removing most suspended solids in the digested centrate. Combined coagulation and membrane treatment show great potential for practical applications in the treatment of anaerobically digested manure centrate due to the easy operation and excellent effect. This work provides a technical reference for the harmless and resource recovery of anaerobically digested manure centrate.

Abstract:In the face of water shortages, the world seeks to explore all available options in reducing the over exploitation of limited freshwater resources. One of the surest available water resources is wastewater. As the population grows, industrial, agricultural, and domestic activities increase accordingly in order to cater for the voluminous needs of man. These activities produce large volumes of wastewater from which water can be reclaimed to serve many purposes. Over the years, conventional wastewater treatment processes have succeeded to some extent in treating effluents for discharge purposes. However, improvements in wastewater treatment processes are necessary in order to make treated wastewater re-usable for industrial, agricultural, and domestic purposes. Membrane technology has emerged as a favorite choice for reclaiming water from different wastewater streams for re-use. This review looks at the trending membrane technologies in wastewater treatment, their advantages and disadvantages. It also discusses membrane fouling, membrane cleaning, and membrane modules. Finally, recommendations for future research pertaining to the application of membrane technology in wastewater treatment are made.

Abstract:Greywater reclamation has been well recognized as an alternative water resource for non-potable or potable use. To meet greywater reuse standards, various membrane-based techniques have been widely adopted to treat greywater for producing water with superior quality. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review on membrane-based techniques in greywater treatment, including direct pressure-driven and osmotic-driven membrane processes, hybrid membrane processes (such as membrane bioreactors and integrating membrane separation with other processes), and resource recovery oriented membrane-based processes. Membrane performance and treatment efficiency in the reported membrane-based greywater treatment systems are evaluated and membrane fouling mechanisms and control strategies are illustrated. The advantages, limitations, and influencing factors on membrane-based greywater treatment processes are highlighted. Towards long-term sustainability of greywater reclamation, the challenges and prospects of membrane-based greywater treatment are discussed.

Abstract:In this review, the application of membrane-based technology in water social circulation was summarized. Water social circulation encompassed the entire process from the acquirement to discharge of water from natural environment for human living and development. The focus of this review was primarily on the membrane-based technology in recovery of water and other valuable resources such as mineral ions, nitrogen and phosphorus. The main text was divided into four main sections according to water flow in the social circulation: drinking water treatment, agricultural utilization, industrial waste recycling, and urban wastewater reuse. In drinking water treatment, the acquirement of water resources was of the most importance. Pressure-driven membranes, such as ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) were considered suitable in natural surface water treatment. Additionally, electrodialysis (ED) and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) were also effective in brackish water desalination. Agriculture required abundant water with relative low quality for irrigation. Therefore, the recovery of water from other stages of the social circulation has become a reasonable solution. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) was a typical technique attributed to low-toxicity effluent. In industrial waste reuse, the osmosis membranes (FO and PRO) were utilized due to the complex physical and chemical properties of industrial wastewater. Especially, membrane distillation (MD) might be promising when the wastewater was preheated. Resources recovery in urban wastewater was mainly divided into recovery of bioenergy (via anaerobic membrane bioreactors, AnMBR), nitrogen (utilizing MD and gas-permeable membrane), and phosphorus (through MBR with chemical precipitation). Furthermore, hybrid/integrated systems with membranes as the core component enhanced their performance and long-term working ability in utilization. Generally, concentrate management and energy consumption control might be the key areas for future advancements of membrane-based technology.
Advanced electrochemical membrane technologies for near-complete resource recovery and zero-discharge of urine: Performance optimization and evaluation

Abstract:The depletion of nutrient sources in fertilizers demands a paradigm shift in the treatment of nutrient-rich wastewater, such as urine, to enable efficient resource recovery and high-value conversion. This study presented an integrated bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) and hollow fiber membrane (HFM) system for near-complete resource recovery and zero-discharge from urine treatment. Computational simulations and experimental validations demonstrated that a higher voltage (20 V) significantly enhanced energy utilization, while an optimal flow rate of 0.4 L/min effectively mitigated the negative effects of concentration polarization and electro-osmosis on system performance. Within 40 min, the process separated 90.13% of the salts in urine, with an energy consumption of only 8.45 kWh/kgbase. Utilizing a multi-chamber structure for selective separation, the system achieved recovery efficiencies of 89% for nitrogen, 96% for phosphorus, and 95% for potassium from fresh urine, converting them into high-value products such as 85 mM acid, 69.5 mM base, and liquid fertilizer. According to techno-economic analysis, the cost of treating urine using this system at the lab-scale was $6.29/kg of products (including acid, base, and (NH4)2SO4), which was significantly lower than the $20.44/kg cost for the precipitation method to produce struvite. Excluding fixed costs, a net profit of $18.24/m3 was achieved through the recovery of valuable products from urine using this system. The pilot-scale assessment showed that the net benefit amounts to $19.90/m3 of urine, demonstrating significant economic feasibility. This study presents an effective approach for the near-complete resource recovery and zero-discharge treatment of urine, offering a practical solution for sustainable nutrient recycling and wastewater management.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry was treated for utilization by microfiltration(MF) and electrodialysis(ED). The results showed that microfiltration was suitable for pre-treatment, while the electrodialysis was suitable for salts,organics and COD removal. The final conductivity of the product water after ED was as low as 260μS/cm and the ultimate COD value was about 20mg/L.The quality of product water was close to municipal tap water and very suitable for reuse as industrial cycle cooling water.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry has been treated for reutilization by electrodialysis(ED)and reverse osmosis(RO)in laboratory.The results show that most of the salinity and COD can be removed by ED.The conductivity of the effluent after ED is as low as 260 μS/cm,COD is 46 mg/L.After the concentrated water is treated consequently by RO the conductivity of permeate is 200 μS/cm and COD 27.7 mg/L.After the treatment,both of the effluent and permeate conform to the standard of reutilization,and can be reused as circulating cooling water,without negative influence on the production.

Abstract:Human urine contains the majority of nutrients in domestic wastewater, therefore treatment of source-separated urine by sustainable methods would become a low-cost and eco-friendly alternative to conventional urban wastewater treatment system. In this work, a waste stream composed of real urine and hygiene wastewater was prepared, which had characteristic of high nitrogen content and low available C/N ratio. Membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is an emerging technology utilizing microporous or nonporous aeration membranes as the substrate for biofilm attachment, and this configuration could promote the growth of autotrophic nitrifying bacteria and the efficiency of nitrogen removal process. The waste stream was treated with a home-made MABR system to remove the organic carbon and nitrogen pollutants. Over a four-month operation period with the incoming waste stream concentration progressively elevated, the system achieved 90-95% removal of TOC, 50-73% oxidation of ammonium-nitrogen, and 24-63% removal of total nitrogen from the influent, without external carbon source input. The results indicated that MABR has the potential for urine wastewater treatment with low consumption in energy and materials.

Abstract:The textile industries hold an important role in the world, while a large amount of textile wastewater is generated every year. It is important to develop effective technologies for textile wastewater treatment, and membrane technologies showed great promising applications in this field. This review focused on membrane technologies for the treatment of textile wastewater. Firstly, the quantity and chemical composition of textile wastewater were discussed. The change in research hotspot and co-occurrence analysis from 2000 to 2021 were analyzed using bibliometric tools. Following this, the removals of primary pollutants using typical membrane technologies were compared. Then, current research on state-of-the-art membrane technologies for textile wastewater treatment was systematically evaluated. The performance of a range of membranes is evaluated, and the primary characteristics and influencing factors of these technologies were discussed. In terms of factors that reduce treatment efficiency, membrane fouling has the largest and broadest impact. This paper discussed mitigation measures for membrane fouling, such as membrane modification and addition of pretreatment. Performance optimization and energy consumption reduction measures for the combinations of multiple membrane processes were analyzed. Membrane modification, process optimization, and the use of clean energy were proposed as the future research directions of membrane processes in textile wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The increasing concerns of water resource are becoming an important issue as severe shortage of water has been seen throughout the world. Though membrane bioreactor (MBR) has made an enormous progress and has become a promising approach in wastewater treatment, there are still several limitations on conventional MBR and thus there emerged integrated MBR for wastewater treatment technology. This paper aims to provide a consolidated review on the current state of research for the integrated MBR system with other technologies for wastewater treatment and help to sustain the treatment process itself. The areas for potential applications of various types of MBR are discussed in this review article. It is expected to provide future prospects to implement integrated MBR as a promising wastewater treatment technology. The valorization of wastewater in integrated MBR would reduce pollution and more importantly open a new source of energy and nutrients. Moreover the integrated MBR makes energy and nutrient recovery to be environmentally and economically feasible.

Abstract:Human excreta contains large amount of resources. In this project, urine diversion toilet was used in the new kind toilet, after separated collection, feces and urine were respectively treated via anaerobic digest followed by forward osmosis and reverse osmosis (FO + RO) membrane system. The design parameters of the toilet system were introduced as well as its operational results. The results showed that the rejection of TPand Knutrient from urine was over 80％, and the reclaimed water met The Reuse of Urban Recycling Water-Water Quality Standard, for Urban Miscellaneous Water Consumption (GB/T 18920 -2002). As a new membrane separation technology, FOhas a good application prospect in urine concentration and reuse.

Abstract:Photo-Fenton coupled with membrane (photo-Fenton-membrane) technology offers great potential benefits in future wastewater treatment because it can not only degrade refractory organics, but also separate different pollutants from water; additionally, it often has a membrane-self-cleaning ability. In this review, three key factors of photo-Fenton-membrane technology, photo-Fenton catalysts, membrane materials and reactor configuration, are presented. Fe-based photo-Fenton catalysts include zero-valent iron, iron oxides, Fe-metal oxides composites and Fe-based metal–organic frameworks. Non-Fe-based photo-Fenton catalysts are related to other metallic compounds and carbon-based materials. Polymeric and ceramic membranes used in photo-Fenton-membrane technology are discussed. Additionally, two kinds of reactor configurations, immobilized reactor and suspension reactor, are introduced. Moreover, we summarize the applications of photo-Fenton-membrane technology in wastewater, such as separation and degradation of pollutants, removal of Cr(VI) and disinfection. In the last section, the future prospects of photo-Fenton-membrane technology are discussed.

Abstract:Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis have become prevalent methods for treating inland wastewater because of superior separation efficiency and operational simplicity, yet they produce highly polluting membrane concentrates (e.g., from municipal potable water and municipal and industrial wastewater) containing biological, organic, and salt pollutants. Managing membrane concentrates poses significant challenges, often resulting in underutilization of their valuable components. This paper discusses strategies for reducing, rendering harmless, and utilizing resources from membrane concentrates, along with their future development trends. Methods for reducing membrane concentrate formation, such as optimizing operational modes and membrane modification, are examined. Generally, the preprocessing methods can be used as an oxidation pretreatment to improve the removal of macromolecular pollutants in the membrane concentrates, and provide conditions for the targeted removal of non-biodegradability emerging contaminants by free radicals in the oxidation process. The biological treatment further treats biodegradable pollutants. Finally, biosafety and water quality can be guaranteed through the membrane process, so as to achieve near-zero emissions. Resource recovery options include the production of salt crystals (e.g., potassium and magnesium phosphate, hydroxyapatite), microalgae resources, and others. Additionally, non-chemical pretreatment before membrane processing is proposed to simplify the treatment of membrane concentrates. A new analytic hierarchy process aids in selecting appropriate treatment and resource utilization processes for membrane concentrates. Furthermore, there is a call for the establishment and reinforcement of water quality legislation to address emerging contaminants in membrane concentrates, as well as regulations governing the purity of resources such as salts recovered from membrane concentrates.
