Abstract:For reading and writing tasks, poor lighting quality can cause veiling reflections. Veiling reflections are luminous reflections from specular or semi-matte surfaces that physically change the contrast of the visual task and therefore change the stimulus presented to the visual system. Veiling reflections occur at positions where the geometry between the observer, the surface and the light source is such that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflections and the reflection is in the direction from the surface to the eye of the observer. Nowadays desktop luminaires are commonly used for paper reading and writing, especially for school students. However, because of the positioning of desktop luminaires, they have a high risk of veiling reflection, especially when the reading materials are glossy ones.Some special designs are needed to reduce the veiling reflections, and both traditional optical design elements such as frosted glass and advanced polarization technology are considered to work to some extent. Moreover, with the same light distribution, people's perception of glare may also differed with spectra, so light sources with different Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) were included in the study. This article focused on the desktop luminaires to investigate: (1) the effects of optical design elements (frosted glass, polarized films) on reduction of veiling reflections; (2) Correlation between CCT of light sources and people's perception of veiling reflection.In the experiments, light sources (compact fluorescent lamps) with two CCT levels (3000K, 5000K), and different optical designs (frosted glass, polarized film A, polarized film B) were used, and the average illuminance levels were controlled at the same level. As physical parameters, Contrast Rendering Factor (CRF) and Polarization Percentage were measured. Usually for a lighting installation, there is always a distribution of CRF values, but since for the desktop luminaires, it is the viewing angle of users that mostly matters, the CRF value in this direction was measured. As subjective evaluation, subjects were asked to rate their perception of glare on a under different conditions. A total of 10 Subjects, aged from 20 to 25 years old, participated in the experiments. A deBoer rating scale for glare was used for subjects' evaluation.Through the experiment, a better solution for reduction of veiling reflection of desktop luminaires was proposed, which can benefit the design of desktop luminaires for users' well-being.
