Abstract:Humanistic management practices are often perceived as ‘unrealistic’, as they stand in steep contrast to ‘normal’ business reality shaped by the commercial logic of neoclassic economics. The conceptual lens of performative practices focuses on how practices that appear to be unrealistic can be ‘made real’ through their enactment. This paper studies such performative humanistic practices of the three companies Greyston (USA), Good-Ark (China), and Allsafe (Germany). Through a thematic template analysis, we identify two distinct types of accompanying practices that enable the performativity of the core humanistic management practices studied. Enabling practices favored the initial performativity the humanistic practices by providing a local ‘proof of concept’. Disseminating practices aided performativity by spreading humanistic practices and therefore increasing practices’ global verisimilitude.

Abstract:The field of human resource management is ever emerging and evolving. Since its inception, it has faced abundant hues and cries. The purpose of this study is to give a holistic and integrative view of HRM concepts and usages. So, this study is based on a meta-analysis of the literature of current major practices used in different ways. The study examines the social exchange theory, the resource-based view of the organization, human capital theory, descriptive study, normative study and strategic theories of human resource management. The comparison of these studies assists HR practitioners to develop the contingencies and to fit the HR policies according to the context and requirements of the organization. An implied but unproven hypothesis symbolizes that good contextual HRM fit may lead to the vigorous development of the organization.

Abstract:Humanistic management, a form of management focusing on the welfare of the people, is directly affected by the culture of the society in which it is practiced more than in most other forms of management because societies have different perspectives of people’s welfare and fundamental purposes of businesses. Taking humanity as its core, Confucianism has established deep, historic roots in the Chinese society and hence has the potential for persuading Chinese companies to adopt humanistic management. This chapter explores this contention through two case studies. Both companies have benefited significantly by following Confucian virtues and by providing humanistic care and humanistic education to their employees. Based on their practices and a review of humanistic literature, we develop a conceptual model of what may be called the process of Chinese humanistic management with propositions on the key variables in the model, including Confucianism, humanistic leadership, the process of humanistic management, hedonic and eudemonic outcomes for the employees, and certain sustainable outcomes for the company.

Abstract:<p>The majority of the extant research on human resource management (HRM) draws conclusions based on evidence from for‐profit organizations. In response to calls for the exploration of HRM in different contexts, this study focuses on understanding HRM in the context of social enterprises. The unique context of social enterprises and their unique workforce raise questions about the direct applicability of frameworks developed from examining HRM in for‐profit organizations. The narratives provided by 20 CEOs, HR directors, and managers of social enterprises in the United Kingdom highlight the importance of "ethics of care" as the core of the HRM‐related decisions in the "third sector." In addition, we identify five distinct workforce categories and propose a typology of differentiated HRM systems that enable social enterprises to achieve their dual mission. Finally, we propose a "virtuous circle" model, highlighting "ethics of care" as the main driver for organizational outcomes, using differentiated HRM systems that better serve their needs.</p>

Abstract:Our country has entered the information age and the knowledge economy age, talent as important resources, not only relates to the development of a country, but also affects the survival and progress of enterprises. In the 21st century, the competition between enterprises is not only the competition of product quality and service, but also the competition of potential "human factors" in every detail. Nieman, who won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002, has made great contributions to the study of economics. He won a Nobel Prize for his work on human decision-making under uncertainty, largely because he was able to combine psychological research with economics. On this basis. This paper briefly introduces the concept and application value of Nieman economic psychology, analyzes the influence of Nieman economic psychology on enterprise human resource management, and puts forward the corresponding countermeasures.

The model developed herein offers an expanded view of positive human resource management through the exploration of the links between the individual, the group, and the organization. The articles that follow offer unique insights into applications of positive psychology within the study and practice of HRM, providing specific examples of how scholarship in this area may continue to develop.

Abstract:This paper integrates the theories and findings of micro-level organizational behaviour/human resource management research with the macrolevel resource-based view of the firm, specifically presenting a firm's human resources as an important potential source of sustained competitive advantage. Unlike practice-oriented discussions that assume the role of human resources as a source of sustained competitive advantage, we use the theoretical concepts from the resource-based view of the firm (Wernerfelt, 1984; Barney, 1991) to discuss how human resources meet the criteria for sustained competitive advantage in that they are valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable. The implications for developing human resources as a source of sustained competitive advantage are discussed, particularly examining the role of HR practices and managers in this process.

Abstract:This paper is a contribution to the discussion of how religious perspectives can improve business ethics. Two such perspectives are in natural law of antiquity and recent Catholic social doctrine and teaching (CSD/T). This paper develops a conceptual framework from natural law and CSD/T that business leaders can adopt to build an ethos of humanistic management. This “Human Dignity-Centered” framework fills the gap between time-tested Christian norms and contemporary firm-leaders’ concrete needs. “Human dignity” is used as a rhetorical device to convey the idea that firms are composed of dynamic social networks, with an ultimate purpose of serving human needs. Ultimately, the principles and virtues the framework employs have a logic that should inspire excellence, as ethical practices and concern for human welfare lay a foundation for long-term business prosperity. In a one-frame visual representation, this paper portrays: firm leadership challenges; a transforming ethical prism of principles and virtues; and results and feedback mechanisms. The accompanying narrative describes each element and how each affects humanistic management. Finally, illustrative company examples and questions are provided to illustrate how the framework can be used to benefit human flourishing. The framework provides an adjunct to current formulations of improving managerial excellence.

Abstract:So far, only a minor proportion of businesses – across all economic sectors – has a business model designed to meet the complex requirements of the UN 2030 Agenda. The transformation to a more sustainable economy for the benefit of people and the planet, let alone honouring the principles of Humanistic Management, remains a Herculean task. This article presents family-run companies from the hospitality and tourism industry that have succeeded in aligning their corporate structures, products, and operations with Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, building the bridge to –and, in part, explicitly integrating –principles of Humanistic Management. A systemic approach serves as the conceptual-theoretical framework, providing a valuable basis for better understanding the role of individual companies in the complex overall system of the 2030 Agenda. Based on three case studies, presenting findings from expert interviews with selected managing directors or owners of family businesses, it becomes clear that this type of business is particularly well suited to successfully manage the multi-layered challenges of a transformation due to its inherent characteristics.

Abstract:South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases, Volume 12, Issue 1, Page 31-51, April 2023. Despite an increase in research on sustainable human resource management (HRM) and its practice, this relatively new research approach still lacks unified concepts and practices. We argue that more qualitative research is needed to discover the practical relevance of sustainability thinking in HRM. In this comparative case study of three Finnish companies, we aim to increase the understanding of this phenomenon by using a practice-based model of sustainable HRM as a theoretical foundation. We investigate why and how the companies implement sustainable HRM and what kinds of results they have achieved. We identify not only similarities but also differences among the companies. Therefore, our study contributes to the practice-based model of sustainable HRM by presenting the outcomes of the implemented HRM practices, as well as the importance of contextual issues. Our study enriches the sustainable HRM discussion by stressing the organizational context, content and process elements, thereby indirectly lending support to the 'soft' HRM model, which is more developmental and employee oriented. The results support the idea that the employer, society and employees can benefit from sustainable HRM in the long term. The positive outcomes of sustainable HRM include employee wellbeing related issues, such as long careers, low turnover, low absence rate and late retirements.

Abstract:Purpose To devise a human resource management (HRM) approach capable of application to the management of employees in social enterprises. Design/methodology/approach The difficulty of applying traditional HRM techniques to social enterprises, where the workforce tends to be volunteers, is discussed. Reviews HRM concepts and their relationship/applicability to social enterprise (labour market relationships within social enterprise, resourcing and skills to support social enterprise, leadership and operational strategy within social enterprise). Presents two case studies, involving an inner city credit union in northwest England; and an inner city after‐school club. Reports on a pilot questionnaire survey focusing on the strands identified by the earlier research. Findings The results indicated a heavy reliance on volunteer labour with almost all organizations working with volunteers. Notes, however, that when asked whether volunteers were crucial to the running of the organization, only 59 per cent felt they were, with the remaining 41 per cent being uncertain or felt that volunteers were not crucial and only a small fraction (12 per cent) having more volunteers than paid workers. Reveals that the infrastructure to support coherent people‐management systems in social enterprise do not appear to be robust and piecemeal support and advice through a range of well‐meaning board members, fragile networks and higher education institutes cannot provide a strong framework for growth and sustainability in managing human resources in the social enterprise sector. Concludes that labour market relationships, resourcing and skills, and leadership and operational strategy have nevertheless been recurring themes in research in this field which suggests that there may be a very real opportunity for HRM tools and expertise to support social enterprise organizations in achieving their business and social goals. Originality/value Sheds light on the HRM aspects of social enterprises.

Abstract:This paper reports on empirical work recently conducted about the use and effectiveness of HRM practices in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). A telephone survey was conducted with 100 senior managers of SMEs to ascertain their use of a range of human resource practices and the extent to which they had found those practices successful in aiding the achievement of company objectives. Additionally in‐depth interviews were conducted with senior managers from a further 22 SMEs. Findings suggest that there is considerable diversity amongst SMEs in relation to their use of HR practices. A model is provided that identifies the key criteria that underlie the adoption of HRM practices, and the implications of the model are discussed.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to find out how Human Resource Management (SDM) helps startupreneurs succeed. The study takes a qualitative approach, doing a thorough literature assessment of SDM practices pertinent to the startup setting, considering the background that startupreneurs face in managing human resources in a dynamic business environment. The research finds SDM best practices and methods that can support startupreneurs in their long-term success through a thorough examination of academic literature, industry reports, and relevant case studies. The findings of the research emphasize how crucial it is to choose and recruit carefully to draw in the greatest candidates, foster an innovative culture within the company, implement adaptive performance management, and produce creative leaders. Startupreneurs can enhance their business sustainability, promote growth, and optimize organizational performance by proficiently grasping and employing these SDM approaches. To sum up, SDM management is not just an administrative duty; it is also essential for startup entrepreneurs to overcome obstacles and thrive in a cutthroat industry.
