General design principles involved in a major kitchen adaptation for disabled and elderly people

Abstract:Every disabled and elderly person needs their kitchen to be as accessible as possible if they are to maximize their levels of independence. Designers and planners therefore need to use extra thought and flexibility in their design to make it practical for the user. Designers have to realize that traditional design methods and processes cannot be used, because conventional standards for space, layout, unit positioning, plumbing and electrics are not necessarily compatible with the needs of the disabled user.
