Abstract:Cladistic analysis of the European species ofPolistes is used to investigate the evolution .of social parasitism in the genus. The three species of social parasites (formerly the genus Sulcopolistes) are all inquilines: lacking a worker caste, and dependent on uSUIping the colony of a host species to obtain a worker force. El:vlERY'S Rule states that social parasites are more closely related to their hosts than to any other species. Previously published allozyme (CARPENTER et aI., 1993) and mtDNA (CHOUDHARY et aI., 1994) data did not support this hypothesis, but did not resolve relationships among the species of social parasites. Morphological characters are adduced which resolve the phylogenetic relationships among these three species, and the combination of the morphological and molecular data sets largely resolves the relationships among all nine European species. Cladistic optimization of traits associated with social parasitism on the resulting cladogram shows: (1) El:vlERy's'Rule is rejected; (2) the scenario proposed by TAYLOR (1939) for the evolution of social parasitism is not supported either. The predatory behavior of the inquiline P. atn"mandibularis, with separate "supply" and "nursery" nests, is evidently secondary, as .. is its initially passive invasion behavior. La phylogenie des Polistes d'Europe et revolution du parasitisme social (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Polistinae) L'analyse cladistique des especes de Polistes europeennes est utilisee pour etudier l'evolution du parasitisme social dans Ie geme. Abstract:Aging individuals may face difficulty with independently navigating and interacting with their home environment. Evidence-based interventions promoting home modifications are needed to support aging-in-place across the lifespan. This study identified the facilitators and barriers to implementing home modifications from the perspectives of residents and professionals (N = 16). Guided by a social-ecological model, researchers utilized directed content analysis of focus group interviews. While participants discussed facilitators and barriers mainly on the individual level, factors were presented at the relationship, community, and societal level of the model. Overall, the findings suggest a potential for targeted interventions on all levels of the model to promote adoption of home modifications.

Abstract:Background People with mobility disabilities often have reduced stamina and limited energy, making daily activities physically demanding. Home modifications, such as installing grab bars and optimizing the environment, have the potential to reduce exertion and enhance safety in the home, enabling individuals to participate more in other activities. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a home modification intervention on perceptions of exertion and safety among people with mobility disabilities. Methods The study utilized the Home Usability Program (HUP), which aims to improve accessibility, safety, and independence in participants' homes. Participants were recruited from four Centers for Independent Living (CILs) across the US and underwent a comprehensive assessment to identify consumer-directed, individualized home modifications. Surveys examining safety and exertion, in addition to qualitative interviews, were conducted to explore the impact of the intervention on participants' energy levels and feelings of safety. Results Analysis of pre-post measures and participant interviews revealed that the HUP intervention resulted in decreased exertion. Decreased exertion had positive outcomes, including increased time for other activities, improved socialization, enhanced independence, and the potential for engaging in activities outside the home. Additionally, the HUP intervention led to increased safety, which positively affected mental well-being and independence. Conclusions Findings highlight the need for usable living environments that minimize physical strain and reduce exertion. Policy recommendations include prioritizing accessibility standards for housing, implementing individualized assessments for funding home modifications, providing financial assistance options, and allocating research funding for innovative solutions and technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Rooted in the person-environment-fit theory, home modification has been tested as an intervention to support older adults to age safely at home by improving functioning and reducing fall risks. Home modification is often a complex process, involving multiple steps and various stakeholders. As such, proper implementation is important to its effectiveness. However, limited research has focused on how to implement home modification from a comprehensive perspective. To advance the implementation science of home modification for older adults and achieve a better understanding of promising practices, we conducted a scoping analysis of review articles, referred to as umbrella review, to identify strategies that have been found effective in implementing home modification. Guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P), after performing a thorough literature search from six electronic databases, including MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Cochrane Review, we identified 16 highly relevant review articles from 1,310 articles retrieved. From these, we derived a set of practical strategies for service delivery professionals and developed an implementation matrix with the strategies clustered under two dimensions: (1) types of home modification based on demands of effort and level of evidence, including evidence-based practices, best practices, emerging practices; and (2) the critical stages of home modification, including preparation, home assessment, installation, follow-up visit. Our findings highlight the importance of maintaining cohesion between different stages of home modification and sustaining consensus among service delivery professionals and residents when implementing home modification for older adults.
Accessible design features and home modifications to improve physical housing accessibility: A mixed-methods survey of occupational therapists

Abstract:Background: Despite the number of older people and people with disabilities increasing in Australia, it is unclear which housing design features are needed to support physical housing accessibility for people with and without disabilities across the lifespan. Objective: This study drew upon the experience of occupational therapists to investigate accessible housing design features and home modifications to support aging in place and discharge from hospital to home. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey exploring housing design features and home modifications was completed by 144 Australian occupational therapists over six weeks in 2021. Descriptive quantitative and qualitative data analyses were used. Results: For both aging in place and hospital discharge, the most important housing design features included step-free access to the dwelling, large step-free showers, and bathroom and bedroom space on the ground floor. Qualitative findings also highlighted the importance of preparing for home modifications, such as reinforcing bathroom walls to support the post-build installation of grab rails. The most frequently needed modifications were for bathroom features, while structural changes to the dwelling were the most time-intensive modifications, requiring more than six weeks to be completed. Conclusions: External access to the home and internal access to bedroom and bathroom facilities can support aging in place and hospital discharge and mitigate the need for costly and time-intensive home modifications. While this study was conducted in Australia, the findings have relevance outside of this context, and are important for ensuring equitable accessibility for people with and without disabilities across the lifespan.
Evidence for a 5-HT1-like receptor mediating the amplifying action of 5-HT in the rabbit ear artery.

Abstract:1. The nature of the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors which amplify the vasoconstrictor effect of methoxamine was examined in the rabbit isolated perfused ear artery with intact endothelium. Indices of amplification were leftward shifts of methoxamine dose-response (DR) curves produced by 5-HT (0.3 microM) (Method I), and the appearance of vasoconstrictor responses to 5-HT receptor agonists when methoxamine was present in a near-threshold concentration (Method II). 2. The amplifying effect of 5-HT (Method I) was unaffected by prazosin (0.08 microM), was partly depressed by 5-HT2-receptor antagonists in high concentrations (ketanserin 0.5 microM, LY53857, 1.0 microM), and was abolished by a non-selective antagonist of 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptors (methiothepin, 0.01 microM). 3. Amplifying potencies of agonists assessed by both Methods I and II were in the order 5-carbox-amidotryptamine (5-CT) greater than 5-HT greater than alpha-methyl 5-HT. The potency of sumatriptan (assessed by Method II only) was intermediate between those of 5-HT and alpha-methyl 5-HT. 4. Ketanserin and LY53857 inhibited the amplifying action of 5-CT to about the same extent as that of 5-HT. 5. The amplifying potencies of the agonists are in marked contrast to the reported contractile potencies in the rabbit aorta where the receptor is 5-HT2, but are almost identical with reported contractile potencies in the dog saphenous vein where the receptor is 5-HT1-like. 6. It is concluded that a 5-HT,-like receptor mediates the amplifying interaction between 5-HT and methoxamine in the rabbit ear artery which can be weakly blocked by ketanserin and LY53857.7. Since 5-CT was equipotent when applied separately to the intimal and adventitial surfaces of the artery, it is suggested that the 5-HT,-like receptors are distributed uniformly across the artery wall.

Abstract:Abstract This research explores current strategies and approaches directed to integrate innovative technologies in the home modification process to support independent living and ageing in place. The systematic review considered studies conducted from the perspective of architecture, smart technology, and gerontology. Scientific databases of related disciplines (e.g. Scopus, Web of Science, Engineer village, Google Scholar, Crossref) were searched and supplemented by hand search method. Thirty-three out of 2594 articles were analysed from three perspectives: the framework of the smart home environment for ageing in place, the smart home modification process, and problems and countermeasures of independent living. The result shows that both home modification and smart technologies can support older adults’ independent living, especially with fall prevention and indoor accessibility. Technologies deployed in older adults’ homes are transiting from manual assistive technology to more intelligent devices, and the notion of the robotic home has emerged. According to existing practices, universal design is an extensively adopted strategy for smart home design and modification. However, in most cases, universal design is used as a retrofitting guideline for general home settings rather than specifically for smart homes. The fundamental requirements in smart home modification phases are customisation, minimum life interference, and extensible technologies to cope with the ageing process.

Abstract:Abstract Home modification (HM) can promote older adults’ functioning as their needs change, reduce fall risks, and support caregivers. A supportive home environment is increasingly important as homes become healthcare delivery sites for home and community-based services (HCBS). HM is funded and administered by disparate agencies, often hindering access to HM services for at-risk older adults who need them the most. The Aging Network (State Units on Aging (SUAs), Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), and Title VI organizations serving Native American older adults) plays an important but not well understood role in HM. To address this lack of research, the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, ADvancing States, and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging in cooperation with Scripps Gerontology Center conducted three national surveys, with support from the Administration for Community Living: 1) directors of the 56 SUAs with an 89% response rate; 2) directors of the 618 AAAs with a 79% response rate; and 3) directors of 276 Title VI programs with an 84% response rate. Exemplary practices included HM advocacy through interagency coalitions; state and local plan priority setting; creative HM financing with housing, disability, and health care sectors, including partnerships with Medicaid agencies; and integration of HMs into state and local HCBS, including nursing home transition and caregiver support programs. Findings on the types of HM activities, service delivery barriers, funding sources, collaborations, and targeted populations will inform HM policy and practice for the Aging Network’s critical state and local agencies serving low-income older adults.

Abstract:Residential interior design for people with special needs necessitates more specific research, especially with respect to physical abilities. Previous studies, as opposed to general people, have overlooked the nuanced requirements generated by age, gender, and living environment differences. This study aims to examine physical abilities across different ages, genders, and residencies and identify relationships between in-home mobility and physical abilities among people with special needs. A total of 384 participants (eight different types of disabilities) completed electronic questionnaires. Among young, adult, and older groups, physical abilities and self-support showed statistical differences. Males demonstrated higher physical ability levels but decreased hand–arm movements than females. Greater physical abilities and subjective health were found in urban residents compared to non-urban residents. Additionally, in-home mobility was positively associated with out-of-home mobility, physical abilities, independence, and subjective health (all p values < 0.05). Thus, physical abilities revealed disparities across ages, genders, and resident settings. Also, the greater the mobility inside the house, the more possibilities there are to enhance physical abilities both inside and outside the house, independence, and subjective health. Design recommendations are provided regarding layout, furniture, flooring, and lighting. The consideration of these specific requirements in residential interior design is encouraged.

Abstract:Home modification or adaptation is an important global issue, especially for older people living with disabilities in ordinary housing of varying ages, and pre-dating concerns about accessibility in design. Comparisons of research from five developed nations identify common themes: variation in integrated service development; public and private financial investment; deferred health costs; workforce expansion and training; and the value of the user perspective. Further discussion identifies the importance of retrofitting alongside new build, and argues for sustainable housing that recognizes population aging but also issues of climate change and the need for more inclusive design of housing for all ages.

Abstract:Background An increasing proportion of older adults experience avoidable hospitalizations, and some are potentially entering long-term care homes earlier and often unnecessarily. Older adults often lack adequate support to transition from hospital to home, without access to appropriate health services when they are needed in the community and resources to live safely at home. Purpose This study collaborated with an existing enhanced home care program called Home Again in Nova Scotia, to identify factors that contribute to older adult patients being assessed as requiring long-term care when they could potentially return home with enhanced supports. Methods Using a case study design, this study examined in-depth experiences of multiple stakeholders, from December 2019 to February 2020, through analysis of nine interviews for three focal patient cases including older adult patients, their family or friend caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Results Findings indicate home care services for older adults are being sought too late, after hospital readmission, or a rapid decline in health status when family caregivers are already experiencing caregiver burnout. Limitations in home care services led to barriers preventing family caregivers from continuing to care for older adults at home. Conclusions This study contributes knowledge about gaps within home care and transitional care services, highlighting the importance of investing in additional home care services for rehabilitation and prevention of rapidly deteriorating health.

Purpose:To explore if aspects of the physical home environment are related to rehabilitation outcomes among community-living persons poststroke.Background:Research demonstrates that healthcare environments are important for high-quality care and that the design of the physical environment is associated with improved rehabilitation outcomes. However, relevant research focusing on outpatient care settings, such as the home, is sparse.Methods:In this cross-sectional study, data on rehabilitation outcomes, physical environmental barriers, and housing accessibility problems were collected during home visits of participants (N = 34), 3 months poststroke. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and correlation analysis.Results:Few participants had adapted their homes, and the relevance of the physical environment was not always discussed with the patient during discharge from the hospital. Accessibility problems were associated with suboptimal rehabilitation outcomes such as worse perceived health and recovery after stroke. Activities most restricted by barriers in the home concerned hand and arm use. Participants who reported one or more falls at home tended to live in houses with more accessibility problems. Perceived supportive home environments were associated with more accessible dwellings.Conclusions:Many face problems adapting their home environments poststroke, and our findings highlight unmet needs that should be considered in the rehabilitation practice. These findings could be used by architectural planners and health practitioners for more effective housing planning and inclusive environments.
Influence of healthcare professionals' actions on the adaptation of elderly individuals at home following hospitalization due to falls: integrative review

Abstract:Abstract Objective To identify how healthcare professionals' actions for fall prevention in elderly individuals in both the hospital and home settings influence adaptation and continuity of home-based care. Method An integrative review conducted with a search in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), the United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), EBSCO, SCOPUS, and Web of Science. The search used the following Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms: "Aged," "Accidental Falls," "Patient Discharge," "Discharge, Patient," "Discharges, Patient," "Patient Discharges," "Discharge Planning," "Discharge Plannings," "Planning, Discharge," and "Plannings, Discharge." Original articles from the past five years were selected, with no language restrictions, and that addressed the research question. Article search and selection were conducted independently and blind by two reviewers between November and December 2022. Results The final sample included eight studies. Six were conducted in Australia, seven were in the English language, and the year 2019 had the highest number of publications. Fall prevention actions were primarily implemented by physiotherapists and occupational therapists through health education and digital videos for guidance related to home modifications. These actions had a positive impact on the motivation, engagement, and awareness of the elderly population and their caregivers. Conclusion The actions of healthcare professionals facilitated greater engagement for the continuity of care and the control of fall risks.
Designing Interiors to Mitigate Physical and Cognitive Deficits Related to Aging and to Promote Longevity in Older Adults: A Review

Abstract:Background: With the increasing global population of older adults, there is a need for environmental interventions that directly affect their physical, psychological, and emotional well-being to help them maintain or regain their independence and autonomy - all of which promote longevity. Methods: To better understand potential opportunities and challenges associated with interior design and "future homes" that may promote well-being, aging in place, and independent living in older adults, the authors reviewed relevant literature and included their own expert opinions from a multidisciplinary point of view including interior design, wellness, and engineering. Results: After summarizing existing environmental interventions for the aging population and their effectiveness, this review reveals knowledge gaps in interior design for the well-being and longevity of older adults followed by a discussion of opportunities for future research that may fill these gaps. Some of these opportunities include finding habilitative design strategies that identify and address unique situational needs of each user, advancing multidisciplinary fields such as environmental gerontology that recreate security and independence for older adults even outside of their homes, implementing technically advanced design strategies, which are flexible and adaptive to individual needs; and integrating the Internet of things (IoT) into living environments, including voice-activated command technologies to improve seniors' central role in enabling an optimized healthcare ecosystem. Conclusions: Knowledge of current evidence regarding the impact of different environmental factors may hasten adaptation of well-designed innovations that can provide optimal healing and living environments for the aging population. By effectively addressing older adults' unique and specialized needs, design practitioners can become an indispensable part of their medical, social, and environmental team. One of the rapidly developing infrastructures promising to revolutionize the design of "future homes" is the IoT. While it is at an early stage of development, ultimately we envisage a connected home using voice-controlled technology and Bluetooth-radio-connected add-ons, to augment much of what home health does today. Bringing these approaches together into an effective strategy for a model of effective geriatric care is important and needs to become an integral part of both design education and practice.

Abstract:Barriers to appropriate in-home service use by Alzheimer's families may be caregiver based, agency based, or policy based. Agency-based barriers are best addressed by modified services and training to meet the unique care demands of cognitively impaired patients and their families. Policy-based barriers may be overcome with attempts to legitimize families as eligible recipients of long-term care services. But beyond access, equity, and cost or reimbursement issues, the Duke respite research demonstration uncovered significant personal and familial barriers that require more individualized approaches. Because objectively burdened spouse caregivers are often reluctant to spend on themselves, they may wait until a crisis forces a decision to ask for help. Unfortunately, scheduled in-home respite programs are not well designed as crisis services. In addition, many families initially fear that acceptance of in-home help means relinquishment of family control to strangers. Providers should take every opportunity to preserve and sustain family control by adhering to family preferences. Finally, many Alzheimer's patients cannot rationally assess their need for assistance, and they react with outrage to home care providers. Spousal caregivers are often reluctant to oppose the patient's strong preferences out of fear of personal reprisals when the worker leaves. One additional barrier deserves special consideration. Many family caregivers believe that if the patient has a bonafide disease (like Alzheimer's), then care decisions should be made by health professionals rather than family members or social workers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:In article describes the choice of methods for caring for the elderly and the comfort of living spaces are closely linked to aging-friendly design. Aging leads to a decline in physical functions, resulting in numerous obstacles in life. Therefore, the article analyzes the activity of housing for the elderly, taking aging-friendly design as a starting point. The development status of elderly housing needs in management, safety, social interaction, respect, and other aspects are examined. Design strategies conducive to aging, in terms of lighting, ventilation, detailed environment, public spaces, and intellectual services, are proposed. This aims to enhance comfort, safety, and livability in housing for the elderly and ensure the quality of life for older people. With the rapid growth in demand for elderly care, the vacancy rate in elderly housing reaches 50%. Due to changes in social and family structure, most elderly people live alone and lack security. Elderly homes have become ideal places for them. Currently, most care facilities lack professional management, and the services provided are too uniform. This leads to a weak sense of identity, with resources remaining underutilized. For semi-disabled individuals, standardized conditions do not always meet their expectations for rehabilitation care, medical services, and spiritual comfort. Elderly people face behavioral disorders affecting sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Declines in the five senses, including speech impairments, mobility difficulties, and physiological disorders, lead to psychological needs such as socialization and self-realization. Aging-friendly design is based on the physiological and psychological cognitive characteristics of elderly people. It aims to create an environment that meets their needs and ensures effective care for them. The aim of the study is to analyze the problems associated with designing buildings for the elderly and to determine strategies for creating a supportive design that considers the needs and characteristics of the target audience. The work is aimed at improving the comfort, safety, and quality of life of elderly people by providing them with an appropriate living environment.

Abstract:The management of chronic diseases requires personalized healthcare that allows older adults to manage their diseases at home. This systematic review aimed to describe the smart home technologies used in the management of chronic diseases in older people. A systematic literature review was conducted on four databases and was reported following the PRISMA statement. Nineteen articles were included. The intervention technologies were classified into three groups: smart home, characterized by environmental sensors detecting motion, contact, light, temperature, and humidity; external memory aids, characterized by a partnership between mobile apps and smart home-based activity learning; and hybrid technology, with the integration of multiple technologies, such as devices installed at patients’ homes and telemedicine. The health outcomes evaluated are vital signs, medication management, ADL-IADL, mobility, falls, and quality of life. Smart homes show great potential in the management of chronic diseases by favouring the control of exacerbations and increasing patients’ safety by providing support in disease management, including support for cognitively impaired older people. The use of smart homes in the community could bring numerous benefits in terms of continuity of care, allowing the constant monitoring of older people by local and hospital health services.
