Abstract:The 5th International Conference on Advances in Optoelectronics and Micro/Nano-Optics (AOM 2015) was held in Hangzhou, China during 28-31, October 2015. It was the fifth event of a series of OSA topical meetings that began in Tianjin in 2009, and consequently took place in Guangzhou (2010), Hong Kong (2013), and Xi'an (2014). Following the successes of the previous conferences, the aim of this year's conference was to present the most recent advances in the fields of micro/nano-optics and optoelectronics, especially the new ideas and concepts in modeling, fabrication and testing of photonic materials, structures, devices and systems, and their applications.

Abstract: Optical fiber based components and devices have been very successful in the past 30 years and will surely continue to thrive in a variety of applications including optical communications, optical sensing, power delivery and nonlinear optics[1-3]. With increasing requirements for higher performance, wider applicability and lower energy consumption, there is a strong demand for the miniaturization of fiber-optic components or devices. When operated on a smaller spatial scale, a photonic circuit can circulate, process and respond to optical signals on a smaller time scale. Only at wavelength or subwavelength size does the photonic structure manifest evident near-field features that can be utilized for interlinking and processing optical signals highly efficiently. For example, it was estimated that to reach an optical data transmission rate as high as 10 Tb/s, the size of photonic matrix switching devices should be reduced to 100-nm scale[4]. At the same time, to perform a given function that relies on a certain kind of light-matter interaction, usually less energy is required when smaller quantities of matter are involved. Optical MNFs featured at subwavelength scale, provide a number of interesting properties such as tight confinement, high fractional evanescent fields, large and manageable waveguide dispersion that are highly desirable for functionalizing fiber-optic circuits with great versatility on a micro/nanoscale[5-7]. At the same time, taper-drawn MNFs provide excellent compatibility with standard optical fiber systems.

Abstract:We present our latest progresses on the development of integrated photonic devices as well as microfluidic chips of unprecedented characteristics and performances using femtosecond laser micromachining. We demonstrate ultra-high Q microresonators in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), on-chip micro-laser and waveguide amplifier, and high-throughput micro-chemical reactor. The achievements are the result of persistent effort on improving the precision and efficiency in ultrafast laser processing.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of our work on the design, fabrication, and integration of micro/nano-scale optical devices, circuits, and networks. This is an extension of the macro/mega-scale optical networks down to the level of micro/nano-scale optical circuits and networks. The micro/nano-optical circuits and networks are designed to perform the functions of collecting, storing, transporting, processing, switching, routing, and distributing optical signals on boards or on chips. The integrated optical components include micro/nano-scale light sources, waveguides, detectors, switches, modulators, sensors, directional couplers, multi-mode interference devices, AWGs, ring-resonators, photonic crystal devices, plasmonic devices, and quantum devices, made of polymer, silicon and other semiconductor materials. The paper discusses scientific and engineering issues concerning the integration of micro/nano-scale photonic devices, circuits, and networks of ultra-small-scale dimensions to a very large scale integration density as applicable for datacom, telecom, transportation, aero/space/avionic, and bio/sensor systems.

Abstract:Abstract Nano-opto-electro-mechanical systems (NOEMS), considered as new platforms to study electronic and mechanical freedoms in the field of nanophotonics, have gained rapid progress in recent years. NOEMS offer exciting opportunities to manipulate information carriers using optical, electrical, and mechanical degrees of freedom, where the flow of light, dynamics of electrons, and mechanical vibration modes can be explored in both classical and quantum domains. By exploiting NOEMS concepts and technologies, high speed and low-power consumption switches, high-efficiency microwave-optical conversion devices, and multiple quantum information processing functions can be implemented through on-chip integration. This review will introduce the principles of NOEMS, summarize the recent developments, and important achievements, and give a prospect for the further applications and developments in this field.

Microfiber and Nanofiber Optics: Principles and Applications

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibers possess intriguing optical and mechanical properties. Recently, MNF array or MNFs with identical geometries have been attracting more and more attention, however, current fabrication technique can draw only one MNF at a time, with a low drawing speed (typically 0.1 mm/s) and a complicated process for high-precision control, making it inefficient in fabricating multiple MNFs. Here, we propose a parallel-fabrication approach to simultaneously drawing multiple (up to 20) MNFs with almost identical geometries. For fiber diameter larger than 500 nm, measured optical transmittances of all as-drawn MNFs exceed 96.7% at 1550-nm wavelength, with a diameter deviation within 5%. Our results pave a way towards high-yield fabrication of MNFs that may find applications from MNF-based optical sensors, optical manipulation to fiber-to-chip interconnection.

Progress in Quantum Electronics

Abstract:This paper reviews the state of the art of micro and nano-optoelectromechanical systems, which in the last years have changed in many ways our common view about optical and quantum electronic devices. Starting with their technological realization through the micromachining of semiconductors, the paper then presents the physical principles of micromechanical devices, their integration with optoelectronic devices, as well as the realization of free-space optical components with the help of semiconductor technology. The application of microoptomechanical systems in optical signal processing, optical data computing, and optical field characterization is further presented in detail revealing the new physical principles used to achieve these goals. The emerging area of the microoptomechanical systems applications for the signal detection in infrared up to the highest far-infrared limit, i.e. the terahertz region, is also analyzed here. The paper ends with a presentation of nanooptomechnical systems analyzing their inherent difficulties of realization as well as their advantages with a special emphasis on the optical properties of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:In our presentation, we will offer an overview of aperture-type scanning near field optical microscopy (SNOM) – a family of nano-optical imaging techniques derived from scanning probe microscopy which are capable of subwavelength resolution, and the development of three dimensional (3D) SNOM methods undertaken by our group to locally image the distribution of the electromagnetic radiation in the proximity of nanoparticles and nano-objects.[1] We will discuss a few applications in which we took advantage of 3D-SNOM to design specific optical nanosystems for light harvesting device applications. Specific case studies that will be presented include the design of plasmonic thin-film solar cells enhanced by random arrays of copper nanoparticles,[2] and the use of 3D-SNOM for characterizing evanescent waveguides self-assembled from of copper nanoparticles assembled on thin films of graphene.[3] In the final part of our talk, we will we present near-field scanning thermoreflectance imaging (NeSTRI), a new pump-probe technique invented in our group (see Figure 1) in which an aperture-type SNOM is used to contactlessly determine the thermal conductivity of inhomogeneous thin films and low-dimensional systems at the nanoscale for heat-spreading and thermoelectric applications.[4,5] These examples well represent the versatility of SNOM imaging and its potential for designing an even wider family of nano-optical devices. Abstract:Micro-Nano optics is one of the most active frontiers in the current development of optics. It combines the cutting-edge achievements of photonics and nanotechnology, which can realize many brand-new functions on the basis of local electromagnetic interactions and become an indispensable key science and technology of the 21st century. Micro-Nano optics is also an important development direction of the new optoelectronics industry at present. It plays an irreplaceable role in optical communication, optical interconnection, optical storage, sensing imaging, sensing measurement, display, solid-state lighting, biomedicine, security, green energy, and other fields. In this paper, we will summarize the research status of micro-nano optics, and analyze it from four aspects: micro-nano luminescent materials and devices, micro-nano optical waveguide materials and devices, micro-nano photoelectric detection materials and devices, and micro-nano optical structures and devices. Finally, the future development of micro-nano optics will be prospected.

High-performance Opto-Electronics with Emerging Materials

Abstract:The rapid development of nanophotonic technologies has put forward higher requirements for optoelectronic devices, including ultra-small footprints, high-speed operation, high efficiency, and low power consumption. Optoelectronics based on emerging materials can provide the material framework that can keep pace with future technological demands. Here we will share our latest innovations and device demonstrations of using low-dimensional materials towards discovering high-performance photodetector and electro-optic modulator performances. We will share the concept of strainoptronics enabling to engineer a plurality of material properties (bandgap, workfunction, mobility) and show how a Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDC)-based efficient photodetector can be realized using MoS2 on a Silicon photonic platform. Furthermore, using scaling-length-theory, we show our roadmap and results of high gain-bandwidth product photodetectors using a metal slot atop a silicon photonic waveguide towards optimizing the carrier-lifetime to transit time ratio. These devices were enabled by a novel 3D-like 2D material transfer system, which also enabled us to demonstrate a 2D material PN junction photodetector operating at zero bias, thus leading to extremely low dark currents and hence very efficient noise-equivalent powers. Finally, we show our latest work on ITO-thin film electro-optic modulators with 40 GHz 3dB roll-off, requiring just 200 meV of the drive voltage. Further development of the modulator platform shows the potential of a 100 GHz fast MZI modulator with a footprint that is 1,000 more compact than standard Silicon photonics and 10,000 more compact compared to Lithium Niobite.

Abstract:Optical modulators are one of the most important elements of photonic circuits. Here, we designed, fabricated and characterized a nanophotonic all optical modulator (NOM) in silicon that is an order of magnitude smaller than any previous silicon modulators, and exhibits an extinction ratio and operable spectrum that are an order of magnitude larger than alternatives. Simulations indicate that our device can provide about 9.5dB extinction ratio with a bandwidth of 10nm, centered at 1.55um, corresponding to extinction ratio per device length of about 3.2dB/{\mu}m. Our device is fully compatible with standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication processes. The device is an example of a photonic device designed using multi-state topological optimization and will lead to a new class of ultra-compact and multi-functional active integrated-silicon devices.

Abstract:Micro-optical components, such as diffractive and refractive microlenses, micromirrors, beamsplitters, and beam combiners, have recently received considerable attention in the optics R&D centers and finally in the manufacturing community. This achievement is due to micro-electro-mechanical (MEM) technology that has demonstrated major improvements in overall performance and cost of optical systems while offering the possibility of relativity rapid transition to products for military, industrial, and consumer markets. Because of these technology advances, an industrial infrastructure is rapidly becoming established to combine micro-optical components and MEM-based microactuators for on-chip optical processing. Optical systems that once were considered to be impractical due to the limitations of bulk optics can now easily be designed and fabricated with all required optical paths, signal conditioning, and electronic controls integrated on a single chip. On-chip optical processing will enhance the performance of devices such as focal-plane optical concentrators, smart actuators, color separators, beam shapers, fiber data distribution interface (FDDI) switches, digital micromirror devices (DMDs), and miniature optical scanners. We review advances in microoptical components developed at the Rockwell Science Center. We also review the potential of on-chip optical processing and the recent achievement of free-space integrated optics and micro-optical bench components developed at UCLA, and DMDs developed at Texas Instruments. © 1997 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:Nanoscale quantum optics explores quantum phenomena in nanophotonics systems for advancing fundamental knowledge in nano and quantum optics and for harnessing the laws of quantum physics in the development of new photonics-based technologies. Here, we review recent progress in the field with emphasis on four main research areas: Generation, detection, manipulation and storage of quantum states of light at the nanoscale, nonlinearities and ultrafast processes in nanostructured media, nanoscale quantum coherence, cooperative effects, correlations and many-body physics tailored by strongly confined optical fields. The focus is both on basic developments and technological implications, especially concerning information and communication technology, sensing and metrology, and energy efficiency.

Abstract:<p>1D organic micro/nanostructures (OMNSs) based on π‐conjugated molecules are considered to be suitable candidates as photonic units due to their unique photophysical advantages over traditional ones in low‐temperature solution‐processed approach, tunable emission color, the built‐in cavity for optical confinement, and so forth. These inherent characteristics of OMNSs make them have broad application prospects in photonics devices, such as nanolasers, optical waveguides, and optical logical gates. In this review, the recent processes of OMNSs in terms of light generation, light confinement, and propagation are introduced, separately. Some representative works of OMNSs are discussed in the direction of optical modulation and processing. However, huge challenges still remain before the OMNSs are actually used as components of optical circuits in the photonics chips. The summary and the expectations are presented for the future development of 1D organic micro/nanostructures photonics.</p>
