Abstract:Nitrogen-functionalized microporous carbon nanoparticles (N-MCNs) are prepared by direct carbonization of a novel polymer obtained from the Schiff base reaction of terephthalaldehyde and m-phenylenediamine. The carbonization temperature plays a crucial role in the porosity, surface chemistry and capacitive performance for the carbons. N-MCN850 sample shows a much larger specific surface area of 1938m2g−1, a higher specific capacitance of 397Fg−1 and 145Fg−1 at the current density of 0.1 and 100Ag−1 in 6M KOH aqueous electrolyte, respectively. The results indicate its outstanding capacitive behavior and ultrahigh-rate performance. In addition, the electrode shows excellent cycling stability along with 98% of the initial specific capacitance after 5000 charge/discharge cycles.

Abstract:Carbons with specific morphologies, compositions and structures have aroused scientific and technological interest due to their intriguing and overwhelming properties for multi-purpose applications. Herein, a novel route to convert Knoevenagel copolymer into hydrangea-like, N/O codoped, and high-surface-area porous carbon (HPC) spheres with excellent supercapacitive performances is presented. By crosslinking p-phenylenediacetonitrile with two aromatic aldehyde co-monomers, as-prepared material exhibits a unique architecture of intertwined nanosheets uniformly self-assembled on the surfaces of microporous spheres. Featuring a large adsorbing platform (1963 m(2) g(-1)), multi-scale pore structure and diverse N/O functional groups, HPC electrode carbonized-activated at the optimal temperature of 700 degrees C yields a prominent capacitance of 330 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), along with a satisfactory rate capability of 221 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1) in KOH electrolyte. More importantly, taking advantage of a refined interphase between the high-concentration water-in-salt Li-TFSI layer and the ion-accessible hydrangea surface, HPC-based supercapacitor gives a higher energy delivery of 32.9 Wh kg(-1) at 575 W kg(-1) than the common devices using KOH (10.93 Wh kg(-1) at 100 W kg(-1)) and Na2SO4 (24.9 Wh kg(-1) at 180 Wkg(-1)), with high-voltage aqueous durability of 90.5% retention over 10,000 cycles at 2.3 V. This inspiring work enriches the methodology for fabricating functionalized carbon spheres that are expected to boom diverse applications.

Abstract:Biomass materials are regarded as ideal precursors for activated carbon owing to their unique structure. Here, a novel hierarchical carbon with a high surface area (2742 m2 g−1) and pore volume (1.528 cm3 g−1) is prepared from cashew nut husk biomass waste by a simple chemical activation. The as-obtained carbon is further assembled into electrodes and analyzed. In a three-electrode system, an optimal sample exhibits superior capacitive performance (305.2 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and rate capability (256 F g−1 at 20 A g−1). Furthermore, a coin-type symmetric supercapacitor made from the optimal carbon sample exhibits a high energy density of 11.2 Wh kg−1 at 400 W kg−1, as well as excellent long-term cycling retention with 97.1% of the capacity being retained after 4000 charge-discharge cycles. Our work demonstrates that the porous carbon obtained from activated cashew nut husks presents great potential in the energy storage field.
Nitrogen and Phosphorus Co-doped Porous Carbon for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:As one of the most promising fast energy storage devices, supercapacitor has been attracting intense attention for many emerging applications. However, how to enhance the electrochemical performance of electrode materials is still the main issue among various researches. In this paper, hierarchical porous carbons derived from Eleocharis dulcis has been prepared by chemical activation process with the aid of KOH at elevated temperature. Results show that the N, P co-doped porous carbon exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, it owns a specific capacitance of 340.2 F/g at 1 A/g, and obtains outstanding cycling stability of 96.9% of capacitance retention at 10 A/g after 5,000 cycles in a three-electrode system. Moreover, in the two-electrode system, the product still maintains a high specific capacitance of 227.2 F/g at 1 A/g, and achieves good electrochemical cycle stability (94.2% of capacitance retention at 10 A/g after 10,000 cycles); besides, its power/energy density are 3694.084 and 26.289 Wh/kg, respectively. Therefore, the combination of facile synthesis strategy and excellent electrochemical performance makes Eleocharis dulcis-based porous carbon as a promising electrode material for supercapacitor.

Abstract:Favourable pore configuration and active heteroatoms contribute significantly to intrinsic electrochemical performance of carbon materials. Herein, N, S co-doped porous carbons are prepared through a two-step calcination process, in which pre-carbonized chitosan, thiourea and potassium hydroxide are served as carbon source, dopant and activator, respectively. Optimal sample CTK-3 exhibits considerable specific surface area (SSA), remarkable micropore configuration and heteroatom content. Therefore, it exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance (309.4 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), cyclic stability (98.7% after 8000 cycles) and rate capability. Moreover, the symmetrical supercapacitors assembled by CTK-3 yields an ultrahigh energy density of 15.6 Wh kg −1 , indicating appealing application potential of the N, S co-doped porous carbon.

Abstract:In this study, we report the fabrication of nitrogen rich activated nanosized carbon with hierarchical micro/mesoporous and ultrahigh specific surface area by template-free and one-step carbonization-activation method, which greatly simplified the process and avoided the waste of reagents. Chitin nanoparticles were prepared by a mechanical induced sol-gel transition process in NaOH/Urea solvent and a subsequent carbonization utilizing NaOH for activation and urea for N doping, resulting in activated carbon (ACNC-800) with extraordinary specific surface area (2631 m2/g) and high nitrogen content (7.1%). Further characterization and electrochemical tests demonstrate high electrochemical performance of the activated nanocarbon. Under the current density of 0.5 A/g, the specific capacitance of the three-electrode system is 245 F/g and that of the two-electrode system is 227 F/g. The assembled capacitors exhibit superior rate performance and good cycle stability (98% capacitance retention after 10000 charge-discharge cycles). This work introduces a simple and efficient strategy to prepare N-doped carbon with hierarchical porosity applied to high performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:N-doped carbons with high surface areas were prepared through one-step chemical activation by using polyurethane foam as carbon and nitrogen source and KOH as activation agent. The morphology, elemental content, surface area and the pore structure of the resulting carbon-based products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The carbon-based product obtained at 700 degrees C (FC700) possesses the largest surface area and pore volume, contributing by the interaction between KOH and the polyurethane foam. In three-electrode system, the capacitance can reach up to 452 F.g(-1) at a current density of 0.5 A.g(-1) in 6.0 mol.L-1 KOH solution. In a symmetric supercapacitor, the capacitance can reach 344 F.g(-1) and the energy density is 11.9 Wh.kg(-1) at the power density of 247 W.kg(-1). And the capacitance can maintain 98.03% of the initial capacitance, demonstrating the excellent stability. The excellent electrochemical performance of FC700 can be ascribed to the high surface area, large pore volume and nitrogen doping.

Abstract:High capacitance property and low cost are the pivotal requirements for practical application of supercapacitor. In this paper, a low cost and high capacitance property nitrogen-doped porous carbon with high specific capacitance is prepared. The as-prepared nitrogen-doped porous carbon employing potato waste residue (PWR) as the carbon source, zinc chloride (ZnCl2) as the activating agent and melamine as nitrogen doping agent. The morphology and structure of the carbon materials are studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectra. The surface area of the nitrogen-doped carbon which prepared under 700°C is found to be 1052m(2)/g, and the specific capacitance as high as 255Fg(-1) in 2M KOH electrolyte is obtained utilize the carbon as electrode materials. The electrode materials also show excellent cyclability with 93.7% coulombic efficiency at 5Ag(-1) current density of for 5000cycles.

Abstract:A facile and environmentally friendly fabrication is proposed to prepare nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous activated carbon via normal-pressure popping, one-pot activation and nitrogen-doping process. The method adopts paddy as carbon precursor, KHCO3 and dicyandiamide as the safe activating agent and nitrogen dopant. The as-prepared activated carbon presents a large specific surface area of 3025 m2·g−1 resulting from the synergistic effect of KHCO3 and dicyandiamide. As an electrode material, it shows a maximum specific capacitance of 417 F·g−1 at a current density of 1 A·g−1 and very good rate performance. Furthermore, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor presents a large specific capacitance of 314.6 F·g−1 and a high energy density of 15.7 Wh·Kg−1 at 1 A·g−1, maintaining 14.4 Wh·Kg−1 even at 20 A·g−1 with the energy density retention of 91.7%. This research demonstrates that nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous activated carbon derived from paddy has a significant potential for developing a high-performance renewable supercapacitor and provides a new route for economical and large-scale production in supercapacitor application.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are widely concerned because of their fast charging and discharging speed, low cost and long operation time. N-doped porous hollow carbon nanotubes (N-PHCN) are widely used as electrode materials for supercapacitors because of their proper length–diameter ratio, high specific surface area from porous structures, good conductivity and high chemical stability. Herein, an in situ activation method for preparing N-PHCN with manganese dioxide nanorods as the core and resorcinol–formaldehyde resin as the carbon precursor was proposed by using the adsorption of KNO 3 in resin and its activation on carbon skeleton. Different from the previous activation strategies of porous carbon, this KNO 3 in situ activation method can provide regular morphology for carbon materials. In addition, an appropriate amount of activator can lead to a high specific surface area, which ensures its high performance as a supercapacitor for energy storage. The optimized N-PHCN shows a maximum specific surface area of 1312.9 m 2 g −1 with a high specific capacitance of 283 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , an energy density of 12.5 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 247.9 W kg −1 and excellent cycle ability with capacitance retention rate of 94.7% after 10,000 cycles.

Abstract:Constructing heteroatom-doped porous carbons with distinct charge storage properties is significant for high-energy-density supercapacitors, yet it remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we employed a thiocyanogen-modulated alkali activation strategy to synthesize N and S co-doped lignin hierarchical porous carbon (NSLHPC). In this process, thiocyanogen serves as a surface modulation mediator to substitute oxygen with nitrogen and sulfur species, while the combination of KOH activation and MgO template generates numerous nanopores within the carbon structure. The three-dimensional interconnected nanosheet architecture facilitates rapid ion transfer and enhances accessibility to active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that introducing N and S heteroatoms through oxygen substitution reduces the adsorption energy barrier of Zn2+. Consequently, the optimized NSLHPC exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 438F/g at 0.5 A/g in 6 M KOH, delivering an energy density of 10.4 Wh/kg in the symmetric supercapacitor and an impressive energy density of 104.9 Wh/kg in the zinc-ion hybrid capacitor. The NSLHPC cathode also shows an excellent lifespan with capacitance retention of 99.0 % and Columbic efficiency of 100 % over 10,000 cycles. This study presents innovative strategies for engineering high-performance porous carbon electrode materials by emphasizing pore structure modulation and N, S co-doping as crucial approaches.
Electrospun activated carbon nanofibers for supercapacitor electrodes

Abstract:Porous activated carbon nanofibers have been prepared by electrospinning a H3PO4-containing polyacrylonitrile precursor. A small amount of H3PO4 (<1 wt%) serves as the activation agent during carbonization of the nanofibers. The activated carbon nanofibers have a large surface area (similar to 709 m(2) g(-1)) and high porosity (0.356 cm(3) g(-1)). A high specific capacitance of 156 F g(-1) (at 0.5 A g(-1)) is obtained at a 1:10 mass ratio of H3PO4 to polyacrylonitrile. The energy density of the supercapacitor with the activated carbon nanofibers as the electrodes reaches 10.98 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 10 kW kg(-1). This is similar to 9 fold larger than that of carbon nanofibers without H3PO4 because the H3PO4-based activation process significantly increases both the micropore volume and the volume ratio of mesopores to micropores.
A Novel Strategy to Prepare N, S-codoped Porous Carbons Derived from Barley with High Surface Area for Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, barley derived N, S-codoped porous carbons are synthesized through a simple, one-step chemical activation method using copper citrate as an activating agent. The copyrolysis of barley and copper citrate contributes to the formation of numerous micro-/mesopores and high surface area. Owing to redox reactions between copper citrate and carbon matrix during the activation process, the as-prepared porous carbon possesses a ultrahigh specific surface area of 2139.6 m(2) g(-1), hierarchical porous architecture with a large pore volume of 1.16 cm(3) g(-1), and high nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur contents. The resultant carbon material with high porosity and appropriate heteroatom doping exhibits a high specific capacitance of 401.6F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a 6.0 M KOH electrolyte and good rate capability with the capacitance remaining 165.6F g(-1) at 100 A g(-1). Additionally, the assembled symmetric carbon-based supercapacitor delivers a high energy density of 30.9 Wh kg(-1) and superior long-term cycling stability of 94.8% capacitance retention after 20,000 cycles in 1.0 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. This work provides a facile strategy to design high-surface-area porous carbons with adjustable pore structure and rich heteroatom amount, which holds a promising future for constructing high energy carbon-based supercapacitors.
Sulfur-doped carbon nanotubes with hierarchical micro/mesopores for high performance pseudocapacitive supercapacitors

Abstract:Increasing the specific surface area and the amount of doping heteroatoms is an effective means to improve the electrochemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The usual activation method makes it difficult for the retention of the heteroatoms while enlarging the specific surface area, and it can be found from literatures that specific surface area and S-content of carbon-based electrode materials are mutually exclusive. Here, CNTs with high specific surface area and sulfur content are constructed by simple activation of sulfonated polymer nanotubes with KHCO3, and the excellent electrochemical performance can be explained by the following points: first, KHCO3 can be decomposed into K2CO3, CO2 and H2O during the activation process. The synergistic action of physical activation (CO2 and H2O) and chemical activation (K2CO3) equips the electrode material with high specific surface area of 1840 m2 g−1 and hierarchical micro/mesopores, which is beneficial to its double-layer capacitance. Second, compared with reported porous CNTs prepared by chemical activation (KOH) or physical activation (CO2 or H2O), the mild activator KHCO3 makes the sulfur content at a high level of 4.6 at%, which is very advantageous for high pseudocapacitance performance.

Abstract:Biomass-based interconnected porous carbon is not only inexpensive and eco-friendly, but also has the characteristics of a large specific surface area and multiple heteroatom co-doping, making it prominent in the energy storage device field. This work reports a simple method to fabricate N, P, and S co-doped interconnected porous carbon from bamboo pulp fiber by one-step pyrolysis method with NaOH/thiourea aqueous and melamine phosphate. In this reaction system, NaOH/thiourea is an activator and a solvent for bamboo pulp fiber, thiourea is the dopant of nitrogen and sulfur, and melamine phosphate is the dopant of nitrogen and phosphorus. The synergistic effect of NaOH/thiourea and melamine phosphate under freezing conditions contributed to increasing the specific surface area, mesoporosity, degree of graphitization, and heteroatom doping of porous carbon, thereby improving its electrochemical behavior. The synthesized porous carbon exhibits interconnected loose structure, huge specific surface area, extremely high mesoporosity (98.26%) and N (3.78 at%), P (0.32 at%), and S (3.36 at%) co-doping characteristics. As a supercapacitor electrode, it presents a specific capacitance (316 F⋅g −1 ) at a current density of 1 A⋅g −1 . After assembly into a symmetrical supercapacitor, it has a high energy density (16.3 Wh⋅kg −1 ) at a power density of 489.0 W⋅kg −1 , and an excellent cycling stability (91.2% capacitance retention after 5 000 cycles in 6 M KOH). In addition, this work aims to find a novel sustainable approach of using renewable biomass to produce high performance electrode materials to meet the need of different energy storage applications.

Abstract:N, S co‐doping activated carbon has been successfully fabricated by the thiourea‐assisted "cutting "strategy, which exhibits the excellent electrochemical performance. Biomass has been considered a potential source for preparing carbon materials due to its environmentally friendly and renewable characteristics. In this work, N, S co‐doping activated carbon materials were easily prepared by using rice straw as the carbon source. In addition to being heteroatom source, thiourea can fragment the carbon particles into smaller pieces and create plenty of micropores during the carbonization process. Both theoretical and experimental analyses demonstrate that the incorporation of S and N species into carbon can improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. The as‐made N, S co‐doping activated carbon materials, when used as electrodes, exhibit a high specific capacitance of 256 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 and maintain a good rate capacitance of 65 % even at a high current density of 50 A g−1. This work may offer valuable guidance for the application of rice straw derived carbon in supercapacitors.

Abstract:In this paper, a method to fabricate structural N-doped hierarchical porous carbon is proposed. KOH and melamine are found to have synergistically impact on the pore-creating and nitrogen-doping process. The targeted product possesses specific surface area of 2642 m2 g−1 with a highly promoted inner surface area. The specific capacitance increases from 364 to 715 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 in a two-electrode system using 6 M KOH electrolyte. It also shows the good rate capability (526 F g−1 at 100 A g−1) and cycle performance (98.28% retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1). The energy density reaches 118 W h kg−1 at the power density of 200 W kg−1. The high specific capacitance is mostly derived from the electrical double-layer capacitance, which is a significant advantage compared to the conventional surface doping. The nitrogen atoms stably embedded into the carbon skeleton. N-5 hindered the energy storage process, while N-Q showed obvious impact both on the specific capacitance and cycle performance. All in all, a high-performance electrode material for supercapacitor is provided in this study and it also provides a brand-new idea for the structural doping porous carbon.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials with hierarchical structures attract intense interest for the development of high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and efficient strategy to synthesize nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbons with tailored porous structure combined with high specific surface area (SSA), which involves a pre-carbonization and a subsequent carbonization combined with KOH activation of silkworm cocoon precursors. Through adjusting the mass ratio of the activator (KOH) to pre-carbonized precursor in the activation process, the hierarchically porous carbon prepared at the mass ratio of 2 (referred to as NHPC-2) possesses a high defect density and a high SSA of 3386m2g−1 as well as the relatively high volumetric proportion of mesopores and macropores (45.5%). As a result, the energy density and power density of the symmetric supercapacitor based on NHPC-2 electrode are as high as 34.41Whkg−1 and 31.25kWkg−1 in organic-solvent electrolyte, and are further improved to 112.1Whkg−1 and 23.91kWkg−1 in ionic-liquid electrolyte.

Abstract:A novel activated nitrogen‐doped hierarchically porous carbon (ANPC) material, which has been synthesized using polyurethane foam as the supporting template, phenolic resin with high carbonization ratio and low‐cost ammonium polyphosphate as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The preparation process comprises of curing and carbonization combined with KOH activation. Despite the simplicity of the process, the obtained ANPC‐4 exhibit a high specific surface area (1452 m2/g), a well‐developed specific pore volume (0.799 cm3/g), moderate mesoporous content (32.7%), good electrolyte ions transport property, and appropriate nitrogen dopant content. When used as a material for fabricating supercapacitor electrodes, the ANPC‐4 exhibited significantly high capacitance value of 356 F/g at 0.2 A/g in a 6 M KOH electrolyte with outstanding rate performance. In addition, the symmetrical capacitors assembled by ANPC‐4 have good specific capacitance (a specific capacitance of 175 F/g at 0.2 A/g), high energy density up to 24.3 Wh/kg, and good cycling stability (94.5% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles of testing).
