Abstract:The superior strength-ductility combination in nanotwin (NT)-strengthened metals has provided a new potential for optimizing the mechanical properties of coarse-grained (CG) metals. In this paper computer simulations based on the mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity and the Johnson–Cook failure criterion have been carried out to uncover the critical factors that serve to provide this dual function. Our results indicate that both the distribution characteristics of the NT regions and the constitutive relations of the NT phase can have a significant impact on the strength and ductility of the CG Cu strengthened by the NT regions. In particular, twin spacing, distribution characteristics such as arrangement, shape and orientation, together with volume fraction of the NT regions, can all have significant effects. Along the way, we also discovered that microcrack initiation, coalescence and deflection constituted the entire failure process. Significant insights into the morphology of NT regions that could deliver superior strength and ductility combination for CG metals have been established.

Abstract:Experimental studies have demonstrated that both strain rate and temperature influence the mechanical behavior of nanostructured metals significantly. In this work, a theoretical model is developed to describe the strain-rate-dependent constitutive behavior of nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The athermal flow stress and thermal-activated flow stress are both considered in modeling the plastic deformation of a nanotwinned metal. Numerical results are consistent with the experimental results, showing that the present model can well describe the strain rate-dependent deformation behavior of nanotwinned polycrystalline copper. Henceforth, the constitutive behaviors of nanotwinned copper at different strain rates and temperatures can be predicted, which will be useful for optimizing the dynamic mechanical properties at various temperatures for nanotwinned metals.
A Molecular Dynamics Study on Mechanical Performance and Deformation Mechanisms in Nanotwinned NiCo-based Alloys with Nano-Precipitates under High Temperatures

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys containing coherent L12 nano-precipitates at different temperatures, as well as the interactions between the dislocations and nano-precipitates within the nanotwins. The simulation results demonstrate that both the yield stress and flow stress in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates decrease as the temperature rises, because the higher temperatures lead to the generation of more defects during yielding and lower dislocation density during plastic deformation. Moreover, the coherent L12 phase exhibits excellent thermal stability, which enables the hinderance of dislocation motion at elevated temperatures via the wrapping and cutting mechanisms of dislocations. The synergistic effect of nanotwins and nano-precipitates results in more significant strengthening behavior in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys under high temperatures. In addition, the high-temperature mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates is sensitive to the size and volume fraction of the microstructures. These findings could be helpful for the design of nanotwins and nano-precipitates to improve the high-temperature mechanical properties of NiCo-based alloys.
Modeling Grain Size Dependent Optimal Twin Spacing for Achieving Ultimate High Strength and Related High Ductility in Nanotwinned Metals

Abstract:We have developed a mechanism-based plasticity model of nanotwinned metals to investigate the effect of twin spacing on strength, ductility and work hardening rate of such materials. In particular, the unique roles of dislocation pile-up zones near twin and grain boundaries, as well as twinning partial dislocations, in strengthening and work hardening are incorporated in the model. Competition between different local failure mechanisms associated with twin lamellae and/or grain boundaries is considered in evaluating the tensile ductility of nanotwinned metals. The present study provides a quantitative continuum plasticity model capable of describing the variations in strength, ductility and work hardening rate of nanotwinned metals with the twin spacing. For nanotwinned copper a grain size of 500nm, the model predicts a critical twin spacing for the maximum strength at 13nm, in excellent agreement with experimental observations. The critical twin spacing is found to be linearly proportional to the grain size, which is consistent with recent molecular dynamics simulations.
Simulating Size and Volume Fraction-Dependent Strength and Ductility of Nanotwinned Composite Copper

Abstract:This work presents a micromechanical model to investigate mechanical properties of nanotwinned dual-phase copper, consisting of the coarse grained phase and the nanotwinned phase. Both strengthening mechanisms of nanotwinning and the contributions of nanovoids/microcracks have been taken into account in simulations. With the aid of modified mean-field approach, the stress-strain relationship is derived by combining the constitutive relations of the coarse grained phase and the nanotwinned phase. Numerical results show that the proposed model enables us to describe the mechanical properties of the nanotwinned composite copper, including both yield strength and ductility. The calculations based on the proposed model agree well with the results from finite element method (FEM). The predicted yield strength and ductility are sensitive to the twin spacing, grain size, as well as the volume fractions of phases in this composite copper. These results will benefit the optimization of both strength and ductility by controlling constituent fractions and the size of the microstructures in metallic materials.
Asymmetric Cyclic Response of Tensile Pre-Deformed Cu with Highly Oriented Nanoscale Twins

Abstract:History-independent, stable and symmetric cyclic response has been detected in as-deposited bulk polycrystalline Cu with highly oriented nanotwins [Nature 551 (2017) 214–217]. In this study, to deepen the understanding of cyclic deformation in nanotwinned (NT) structures, small levels of tensile pre-strains were applied on NT-Cu, followed by strain-controlled symmetric tension-compression cyclic tests. Distinct from the symmetric cyclic response of as-deposited NT-Cu, the magnitude of the maximum stress in tension is much larger than that of the minimum stress in compression, indicating that the cyclic response of tensile pre-deformed NT-Cu is highly asymmetric. The degree of its cyclic asymmetry gradually decays as the number of cycles or the plastic strain amplitude is increased. The tensile pre-deformed NT-Cu recovers to its symmetric cyclic response after cyclic deformation at sufficiently large plastic strain amplitude, analogous to that detected in as-deposited NT counterparts. Molecular dynamics simulations and microstructural observations revealed that the observed asymmetric cyclic response is mainly related to the activation and movement of threading dislocations with extended misfit dislocation tails lying on the twin boundaries (TBs) during tensile pre-deformation. During cyclic deformation, threading dislocations in adjacent twin interiors tend to link their long tails with one another to form correlated necklace dislocations (CNDs) with a symmetric structure. The CNDs move back-and-forth along the twin boundaries without directional slip resistance, contributing to the transition from asymmetric to symmetric cyclic response of NT-Cu.
A Constitutive Description of the Yield Strength and Strain Hardening Behaviors of Nano-Twinned Metals

Abstract:In this paper, a constitutive description of the true stress-strain behaviors of nano-twinned metals has been proposed. The size effects of nano-scale twin boundaries (TBs) and ultra-fine grain boundaries (GBs) are considered in the athermal stress. The evolution of the dislocation density with strain under the influence of strain rate and temperature is introduced in the thermal stress based on our previous meso-scale constitutive model. The new model can effectively describe the strength transition regime in nano-twinned metals. The proposed model’s predictions of true stress-strain relation curves for nano-twinned copper are compared with the experimental results of uniaxial tension tests for validation. The comparisons show that the previous models in literature for the dependence of initial yield strength on twin spacing cannot describe the experimental data correctly when the twin spacing tends to zero; however, the phenomenological model proposed in this paper for the twin spacing depending relation is theoretically rational and can well describe the experimental data in the whole range of twin spacing.
Deformation of Copper Nanowire under Coupled Tension–Torsion Loading

Abstract:Metallic nanowires (NWs) are essential building blocks for flexible electronics, and experience different deformation modes due to external mechanical loading. Using atomistic simulations, this work investigated the deformation behavior of copper nanowire under coupled tension–torsion loading. A transition in both yielding pattern and dislocation pattern were observed with varying torsion/tension strain ratios. Specifically, increasing the torsion/tension strain ratio (with larger torsional strain) triggered the nucleation of different partial dislocations in the slip system. At low torsion/tension strain ratios, plastic deformation of the nanowire was dominated by stacking faults with trailing partial dislocations pinned at the surface, shifting to two partial dislocations with stacking faults as the strain ratio increases. More interestingly, the NW under tension-dominated loading exhibited a stacking fault structure after yielding, whereas torsion-dominated loading resulted in a three-dimensional dislocation network within the structure. This work thus suggests that the deformation behavior of the NW varies depending on the coupled mechanical loading, which could be beneficial for various engineering applications.

Abstract:The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed with single-crystal copper blocks under simple shear to investigate the size and strain rate effects on the mechanical responses of face-centered cubic (fcc) metals. It is shown that the yield stress decreases with the specimen size and increases with the strain rate. Based on the theory of dislocation nucleation, a modified power law is proposed to predict the scaled behavior of fcc metals, which agrees well with the numerical and experimental data ranging from nanoscale to macro-scale. In the MD simulations with different strain rates, a critical strain rate exists for each single-crystal copper block of given size, below which the yield stress is nearly insensitive to the strain rate. A hyper-surface is therefore formulated to describe the combined size and strain rate effects on the plastic yield strength of fcc metals. The preliminary results presented in this paper demonstrate the potential of the proposed simple procedure for engineering design at various spatial and temporal scales.
Physically Based Modeling of Cyclic Plasticity for Highly Oriented Nanotwinned Metals

Abstract:Fatigue resistance is crucial for the engineering application of metals. Polycrystalline metals with highly oriented nanotwins have been shown to exhibit a history-independent, stable, and symmetric cyclic response [Pan et al., 2017, Nature 551, pp. 214-217]. However, a constitutive model that incorporates the cyclic deformation mechanism of highly oriented nanotwinned metals is currently lacking. This study aims to develop a physically based model to describe the plastic deformation of highly oriented nanotwinned metals under cyclic loading parallel to the twin boundaries. The theoretical analysis is conducted based on non-uniform distribution of twin boundary spacing measured by experiments. During cyclic plasticity, each twin lamella is discretely regarded as a perfect elastoplastic element with a yielding strength depending on its thickness. The interaction between adjacent nanotwins is not taken into consideration according to the cyclic plasticity mechanism of highly oriented nanotwins. The modeling results are well consistent with the experiments, including the loading-history independence, Masing behavior, and back stress evolution. Moreover, the dissipation energy during cyclic deformation can be evaluated from a thermodynamics perspective, which offers an approach for the prediction of the fatigue life of highly oriented nanotwins. The cyclic plasticity modeling and fatigue life prediction are unified without additional fatigue damage parameters. Overall, our work lays down a physics-informed framework that is critical for the precise prediction of the unique cyclic behaviors of highly oriented nanotwins.

Abstract:Anisotropic plastic deformation in columnar-grained copper in which preferentially oriented nanoscale twins are embedded is studied by experimental testing, crystal plasticity modeling and molecular dynamics simulations. The dominant deformation mechanism can be effectively switched among three dislocation modes, namely dislocation glide in between the twins, dislocation transfer across twin boundaries, and dislocation-mediated boundary migration, by changing the loading orientation with respect to the twin planes. The controllable switching of deformation mechanisms not only leads to a marked dependence of yield strength on loading orientation, but also induces a strong orientation dependence of strain hardening that can be critical for retaining tensile ductility. These results demonstrate a new route for tailoring both nanostructure and loading to control the deformation mechanisms in order to achieve the desired mechanical properties in engineering materials.
Trans-twin Dislocations in Nanotwinned Metals

Abstract:The strength-controlling dislocation mechanism of a material can be illuminated by partition of the flow stress into its effective stress and back stress components. Recent experiments report a nearly constant saturated effective stress of about 100 MPa for nanotwinned Cu with a range of nanotwin thicknesses less than 100 nm [Z. Cheng et.al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 119 (2022) e2116808119]. This surprising result implies that the effective stress is controlled by the long dislocations spanning multiple nanotwin lamellae, termed trans-twin dislocations, rather than the commonly thought threading dislocations confined within individual nanotwin lamellae. Here we use molecular dynamics to simulate the formation and motion of trans-twin dislocations across multiple nanotwin lamellae. We show that the interconnected segments of a trans-twin dislocation can glide concertedly on the corrugated {111} slip planes in consecutive nanotwin lamellae with little resistance from coherent twin boundaries. Our results indicate that the finite resistance to slip transmission across coherent twin boundaries can set a lower limit of the effective obstacle spacing to hinder dislocation glide and thus dictate the upper limit of the saturated effective stress of nanotwinned metals. This work provides new understanding of the strength-controlling mechanism in nanotwinned metals.

Abstract:<span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec1 outputmedium-all"><p class="a-plus-plus">Adding nanotwins to a metal could be a way to effectively improve its strength without suppressing its tensile ductility, which suggests that their unique nanostructure may alter microstructure evolution and deformation mechanisms. In this work, we perform a molecular dynamics-based tension simulation of two-dimension (2D) polycrystalline copper (Cu) with embedded nanotwins under uniaxial stress conditions. The results of MD-simulation reveal that the spacing of the twin boundaries had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of nanotwinned materials. According to the analysis of microstructure evolution, the presence of nanotwins hinder the motion of partial dislocations and stacking faults, and the stress-concentrated region leads to the transition from coherent twin boundaries to incoherency. The stress-concentrated region locates in the step of incoherent would release the intrinsic stacking faults responsible for the formation of hierarchical contraction nanotwins stacking faults which efficiently improves the strength of Cu. In addition, as the tension proceeds, some samples begin to display the secondary twinning. Recoverable Plasticity in Penta-Twinned Metallic Nanowires Governed by Dislocation Nucleation and Retraction

Abstract:There has been relatively little study on time-dependent mechanical properties of nanowires, in spite of their importance for the design, fabrication and operation of nanoscale devices. Here we report a dislocation-mediated, time-dependent and fully reversible plastic behaviour in penta-twinned silver nanowires. In situ tensile experiments inside scanning and transmission electron microscopes show that penta-twinned silver nanowires undergo stress relaxation on loading and complete plastic strain recovery on unloading, while the same experiments on single-crystalline silver nanowires do not exhibit such a behaviour. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the observed behaviour in penta-twinned nanowires originates from the surface nucleation, propagation and retraction of partial dislocations. More specifically, vacancies reduce dislocation nucleation barrier, facilitating stress relaxation, while the twin boundaries and their intrinsic stress field promote retraction of partial dislocations, resulting in full strain recovery.

Abstract:An overview is given of the deformation mechanisms in nanotwinned copper, as studied by recent molecular dynamics, dislocation mechanics and crystal plasticity modeling. We highlight the unique role of nanoscale twin lamellae in producing the hard and soft modes of dislocation glide, as well as how the coherent twin boundaries affect slip transfer, dislocation nucleation, twinning and detwinning. These twin boundary-mediated deformation mechanisms have been mechanistically linked to the mechanical properties of strength, ductility, strain hardening, activation volume, rate sensitivity, size-dependent strengthening and softening in nanotwinned metals. Finally, discussions are dedicated to identifying important unresolved issues for future research.

Abstract:Metals with a high density of nanometre-scale twins have demonstrated simultaneous high strength and good ductility, attributed to the interaction between lattice dislocations and twin boundaries. Maximum strength was observed at a critical twin lamella spacing (∼15 nm) by mechanical testing; hence, an explanation of how twin lamella spacing influences dislocation behaviours is desired. Here, we report a transition of dislocation nucleation from steps on the twin boundaries to twin boundary/grain boundary junctions at a critical twin lamella spacing (12–37 nm), observed with in situ transmission electron microscopy. The local stress concentrations vary significantly with twin lamella spacing, thus resulting in a critical twin lamella spacing (∼18 nm) for the transition of dislocation nucleation. This agrees quantitatively with the mechanical test. These results demonstrate that by quantitatively analysing local stress concentrations, a direct relationship can be resolved between the microscopic dislocation activities and macroscopic mechanical properties of nanotwinned metals.

Simulation of Scale Dependency on Tensile Mechanical Properties of Single Crystal Copper Nano-Rod

Abstract:The tension process of single crystal Cu nano-rods with different cross section shapes were simulated by molecular dynamics at atomic scale. Based on centrosymmetry parameter method and combined with the dislocation nucleation theory, the effect of cross-section shape, cross-sectional area and slenderness ratio on the tensile mechanical properties of the nano-rods were analyzed, and the scale dependency of tensile mechanical properties of the single crystal Cu nano-rods has been studied. The results show that after first yield, the nano-rods produce plastic deformation under the "dislocation nucleation-extended dislocation and sliding-lattice atom cross-slip" mechanism of the alternating cycle. The geometry of cross-section has negligible effects on the tensile initial plasticity of the nano-rods, while it shows apparent effects on the tensile mechanical properties. With the increase of cross-sectional area, two types of nano-rods have the phenomenon of early yield point, yield strength decreases and Young's modulus increases. Compared with that of the square cross-sectional nano-rod, the variable rate of yield stress of the circular cross-sectional nano-rod is smaller and the variable rate of Young's modulus is larger. As the cross-sectional area increases to 500 nm(2), the Young's modulus of the two types of nano-rods become stable, and is close to the theoretical value of 84 GPa. Moreover, the slenderness ratio of the nano-rods has a slight effect on the tensile mechanical properties when the simulation size increased.
Deformation mechanisms in nanotwinned metal nanopillars

Abstract:Nanotwinned metals are attractive in many applications because they simultaneously demonstrate high strength and high ductility, characteristics that are usually thought to be mutually exclusive. However, most nanotwinned metals are produced in polycrystalline forms and therefore contain randomly oriented twin and grain boundaries making it difficult to determine the origins of their useful mechanical properties. Here, we report the fabrication of arrays of vertically aligned copper nanopillars that contain a very high density of periodic twin boundaries and no grain boundaries or other microstructural features. We use tension experiments, transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulations to investigate the influence of diameter, twin-boundary spacing and twin-boundary orientation on the mechanical responses of individual nanopillars. We observe a brittle-to-ductile transition in samples with orthogonally oriented twin boundaries as the twin-boundary spacing decreases below a critical value (∼3-4 nm for copper). We also find that nanopillars with slanted twin boundaries deform via shear offsets and significant detwinning. The ability to decouple nanotwins from other microstructural features should lead to an improved understanding of the mechanical properties of nanotwinned metals.

Abstract:<p>High-entropy alloys (HEA) present high hardness, but low tensile ductility. Here, deformation behaviour of the nanotwinned Cu/HEA FeCoCrNi nanolaminates prepared by the previous experiment is investigated using atomic simulations. The result shows the nucleation and glide of lattice dislocations in the Cu layers dominate the initial plastic deformation in Cu/HEA multilayers, and these gliding dislocations are deposited at the twinning boundary. With the increasing strain, the dislocations are activated in HEA layer, and deposited in the Cu-HEA interface, finally facilitate slip transmission from the HEA layer to the Cu layer. The flow stress decreases and keeps a constant value with increasing nanotwinned Cu/HEA FeCoCrNi layer number, which depends upon the slip transmission and interfacial dislocation to govern strain hardening.</p>

Abstract:new source of softening Conventional metals gain much of their strength through the interaction of dislocations with obstacles such as grain boundaries, whereas the geometrical constraints prevailing in nanostructured materials limit such effects. Huajian Gao and colleagues now report molecular dynamics simulations which reveal that the strength of ultrafine grained copper containing twin boundaries can be controlled by a dislocation nucleation mechanism activated below a critical twin thickness. The motion of the new dislocations leads to the migration of twin planes, and as a result the material becomes softer. The smaller the grains, the smaller the twin-boundary spacing and the higher the maximum strength of the material.
