Abstract:Bamboo materials were pyrolyzed in TGA equipment (TGA/SDTA851e) at heating rate of 5,10,20,30 K·min -1 in the temperature range of 313～650 K and N_2 atmosphere.The pyrolysis process of bamboo consisted of three steps: pre-pyrolysis of water evaporation,first step pyrolysis and second step pyrolysis. The kinetics of bamboo pyrolysis was analyzed based on the Levenberg-Marquardt method. The first step of bamboo pyrolysis could be considered as the pyrolysis of semi-cellulose to volatile matter only and well described by a first-order reaction model.The second step of bamboo pyrolysis could be considered as the pyrolysis of cellulose and lignin to volatile matter and char,and well described by a parallel first-order reaction model.The first step of bamboo pyrolysis was dependent on heat-up rate,while the second step of bamboo pyrolysis was independent of heat-up rate.

Abstract:Effects of alkali ceramics, Na2ZrO3 (NZ) and Li4SiO4 (LS), were quantified in the catalytic pyrolysis of sawdust, using thermogravimetric analysis and kinetic modeling. Results indicated that the alkali ceramics were able to initiate thermal decomposition at lower temperatures and enhanced H-2 yield. The mean activation energies estimated by Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Friedman methods were within the range of 162-166, 114-116, 112-117 kJ mol(-1) for sawdust (SD), sawdust mixed with Li4SiO4 (SD-LS) and sawdust mixed with Na2ZrO3 (SD-NZ), respectively. The theoretical and experimental master plots constructed for SD closely match with theoretical master plot corresponding to three-dimensional diffusion (Ginstling-Brounshtein equation) (D4) reaction model. The SD-LS and SD-NZ samples followed first-order (F1) reaction model at lower conversions and shifted from F1 to three-dimensional diffusion (D4) reaction model at higher conversions.
Effect of Torrefaction Temperature on Lignin Macromolecule and Product Distribution from HZSM-5 Catalytic Pyrolysis

Abstract:Torrefaction is a low-temperature process considered as an effective pretreatment technique to improve the grindability of biomass as well as enhance the production of aromatic hydrocarbons from Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis (CFP). This study was performed to understand the effect of torrefaction temperature on structural changes in the lignin macromolecule and its subsequent influence on in-situ CFP process. Lignin extracted from southern pine and switchgrass (via organosolv treatment) was torrefied at four different temperatures (150, 175, 200 and 225 degrees C) in a tubular reactor. Between the two biomass types studied, lignin from pine appeared to have greater thermal stability during torrefaction when compared with switchgrass lignin. The structural changes in lignin as a result of torrefaction were followed by using FTIR spectroscopy, solid state CP/MAS C-13 NMR, P-31 NMR spectroscopy and it was found that higher torrefaction temperature (200 and 225 degrees C) caused polycondensation and de-methoxylation of the aromatic units of lignin. Gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed that polycondensation during torrefaction resulted in an increase in the molecular weight and polydispersity of lignin. The torrefied lignin was subsequently used in CFP experiments using H(+)ZSM-5 catalyst in a micro-reactor (Py-GC/MS) to understand the effect of torrefaction on the product distribution from pyrolysis. It was observed that although the selectivity of benzene-toluene-xylene compounds from CFP of pine improved from 58.3% (torrefaction temp at 150 degrees C) to 69.0% (torrefaction temp at 225 degrees C), the severity of torrefaction resulted in a loss of overall aromatic hydrocarbon yield from 11.6% to 4.9% under same conditions. Torrefaction at higher temperatures also increased the yield of carbonaceous residues from 63.9% to 72.8%. Overall, torrefying lignin caused structural transformations in both type of lignins (switchgrass and pine), which is ultimately detrimental to achieving a higher aromatic hydrocarbon yield from CFP. Abstract:Torrefaction influences the structural and physicochemical properties of biomass, thus further altering its thermal degradation behavior. In this study, the pyrolysis characteristics, reaction kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters of raw and torrefied Chinese fir (CF) were investigated. The torrefaction was conducted at 220 °C (mild) and 280 °C (severe), the pyrolysis was performed from ambient temperature to 600 °C, and four different heating rates (i.e., 5, 15, 25, and 35 °C/min) were adopted. The activation energy for pyrolysis was estimated by adopting three isoconversional methods. The master-plot method was employed to analyze the reaction mechanism. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters, i.e., the enthalpy change (ΔH), Gibbs free energy change (ΔG), and entropy change (ΔS), were calculated. The average activation energy increased with the torrefaction temperature, whose values estimated by using different methods ranged from 88.57 to 97.70, from 121.04 to 126.35, and from 167.51 to 179.74 kJ/mol for raw, mildly, and severely torrefied CF samples, respectively. A compensation effect between the activation energy and pre-exponential factor was observed for all samples. The degradation process was characterized as endothermic, involving the formation of activated complexes and requiring extra energy for torrefied samples.

Abstract:Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) has recently aroused great interest for the high potential in upgrading bio-oils as renewable energy. However, conventional catalysts often exert diffusion resistance to large intermediate oxygenates. In this study, Fe-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 prepared by alkali and Fe loading of 2, 4, 6, 8 wt% were characterized by the analysis of XRD, BET, TEM, and NH3-TPD. Catalytic pyrolysis of poplar sawdust via Fe-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 was conducted using Py-GC/MS and TG-FTIR. The results indicated that alkali treatment and Fe loading of the catalyst introduced a hierarchical and porous structure and improved its acidity, leading to high mono-aromatics and olefins selectivity. The hierarchical ZSM-5 with 4 wt% Fe loading exhibited superior performance with high selectivity towards mono-aromatics of 15.30%. TG-FTIR analysis shows the volatiles release characteristics and FTIR spectra were consistent with pyrolysis behavior. Kinetic analysis reveals Fe-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 lowers the apparent activation energy in CFP of poplar sawdust.

Abstract:The present study proposes biomass torrefaction combined with catalytic pyrolysis to simplify the liquid products and selectively generate aromatic hydrocarbons. Cedarwood was selected as the representative biomass sample. The torrefaction of cedarwood at 250 degrees C and 300 degrees C (TB250 and TB300) was carried out to determine the solid product yield and its composition. It was shown that TB250 yielded the highest lignin feedstock and the yield of acetic acid was decreased to 1.88 %. Different transition metals (Ni/Cr) and Mo2N modified HZSM-5 catalysts with different Si/Al ratios were prepared for catalytic pyrolysis. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of several factors on the final aromatic hydrocarbons yields. The results indicated that with a pyrolysis temperature of 700 degrees C, a catalyst-to-biomass ratio of 5, and 5% Ni-Mo2N/HZSM-5 (Si/Al ratio of 25) catalyzed, the yields of benzene, toluene and xylene could be increased to 2.10 %, 3.94 % and 5.54 %, respectively. Resulting from the excellent reduction ability of the modified catalyst, the yields of naphthalene and methylnaphthalene were reduced to 2.58 % and 0.70 %, respectively.

Abstract:Thermal behavior and interaction of Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and lignin with HZSM-5 as catalyst during catalytic co-pyrolysis were analyzed by thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-FTIR). The synergistic effect of lignin and hydrogen-rich LDPE decreased the starting temperature of pyrolysis and accelerated the pyrolysis rate. Kinetic analysis based on the Coats-Redfern method showed that HZSM-5 catalysis significantly decreased the reaction's activation energy. FTIR results also indicated that the composition of pyrolysis products shifted to more alkane and aromatics by co-feeding the lignin with LDPE and catalyst HZSM-5.

Abstract:The pyrolysis of pine sawdust was investigated by thermogravimetric techniques (TG/DTG) in the temperature range from room temperature (20 degrees C) to 1000 degrees C under dynamic heating conditions (10, 20, 40 and 80 K min(-1) heating rates). Little differences in the weight loss as a function of heating rates were observed. Total weight losses of 83%, 78%, 79% and 83% at heating rates of 10 K/min, 20 K/min, 40 K/min and 80 K/min were observed, respectively. From the thermogravimetric analysis, it was established that the thermal decomposition pine sawdust consisted of three main stages: water evaporation (< 200 degrees C), devolatilization of organic volatiles (200-500 degrees C) and char formation (> 500 degrees C). The kinetic processing of non-isothermal TG data was performed by model-free methods, such as the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sonuse (KAS) methods. The average activation energy calculated by the FWO and KAS methods was 96.38 and 91.72 kJ mol(-1), respectively. Experimental results showed that the values of kinetic parameters obtained by both methods were in good agreement and could be successfully applied to understand the complex degradation mechanism of the solid-state reaction. With a further increase of the conversion degree, a complicated relation between activation energy (Ea) and conversion (alpha) was evident, as the thermal degradation process of pine sawdust underwent a multi-step reaction. The findings of this study contribute to better understanding of the devolatilization process of different types of biomass.

Abstract:The elucidation of the biomass pyrolysis characteristics will provide valuable guidance for the design of pyrolysis devices. The pyrolysis kinetics characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, and the main influencing factors, including biomass particle size, heating rate, and metal ion, were investigated. With a decrease in the particle size of rice straw and pine sawdust, the initial and final pyrolysis temperatures and the temperature of the maximum weight loss ratio decreased. Opposite results were obtained for Phoenix tree leaves. Furthermore, the initial release temperature of volatile matter and the temperature corresponding to the peak of the derivative thermogravimetric curves increased with an increase in heating rate. Moreover, the pyrolysis activity of rice straw decreased significantly after deashing but increased with the addition of potassium. The pyrolysis kinetics parameters were calculated by the Coats–Redfern, Doyle, and the distributed activation energy model (DAEM) methods. The apparent activation energy of pyrolysis was the lowest, varying between 30 and 70 kJ/mol, according to the fitting results of the Coats–Redfern method. The apparent activation energies calculated by the DAEM and Doyle methods are similar, and are 67.6, 245.8, and 271.8 kJ/mol for rice straw, pine sawdust and Phoenix tree leaves, respectively.

Abstract:The gasification behavior of pine wood sawdust was investigated in CO2 with different heating rates of 5, 10, 15, and 20 °C/min from room temperature to 1400 °C by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mass spectrometry (MS). It was also examined under Ar to compare the differences observed under CO2 at heating rate of 10 °C/min. Kinetics of pine wood sawdust thermal decomposition was determined by the models of FWO, KAS and master plot method. TGA results revealed different reaction sections from pyrolysis to char gasification under CO2. The pyrolysis behavior was similar under CO2 and Ar and had a similar energy required value about 590 kJ/kg from 250 °C to 420 °C. CO, CH4, and H2 were the primary gases obtained from thermal decomposition, and the amounts of which in CO2 atmosphere were higher than those obtained in Ar. The average activation energy for pyrolysis under CO2 was 184.72 kJ/mol.

Abstract:Py-GC/MS and thermogravimetric analysis were carried out to systematically explore product selectivity and kinetics of poplar sawdust catalytic pyrolysis over bi-metallic Fe-Ni/ZSM-5. The results showed that the Fe-Ni/ZSM-5 exhibited an additive effect on the production of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to mono-metallic catalysts (Fe/ZSM-5 or Ni/ZSM-5). Fe-Ni/ZSM-5 further increased the yield of toluene (17.28 mg g-1), which was 41.4% and 80.9% higher than Fe/ZSM-5 and Ni/ZSM-5, respectively. According to the kinetic analysis, the average activation energy obtained from catalytic pyrolysis with Fe-Ni/ZSM-5 using the methods of Friedman, Starink, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose was 156.19, 152.39, 154.30, and 152.11 kJ mol-1, respectively. Fe-Ni/ZSM-5 addition lowered the activation energy compared to non-catalytic pyrolysis at the conversion rate of 0.15-0.75. The overall catalytic pyrolysis process of poplar sawdust follows the diffusion and nucleation models. The thermodynamic parameters (enthalpy and entropy) showed positive and negative values, respectively, indicating non-spontaneous reactions during the catalytic pyrolysis process.

Abstract:Oriented strand board is a widely used construction material responsible for a substantial portion of the fire load of many buildings. To accurately model the response of oriented strand board to fire, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and microscale combustion calorimetry tests were carried out to construct a thermal decomposition model using a numerical solver, ThermaKin, and a hill climbing optimization algorithm. The model included a single-step water vaporization reaction and four consecutive reactions representing thermal decomposition of organic constituents of oriented strand board. The experiments and modeling revealed that the first two of the four reactions are endothermic, while the last two are exothermic. The net heat of decomposition was found to be near zero. The heat capacities of condensed-phase species and heats of combustion of evolved gases were also determined. The heats of combustion were found to vary over the course of decomposition—the trend captured by the model. Development of a complete pyrolysis model for this material will be a subject of Part II of this work.

Abstract:Kinetic studies of thermal decomposition of several woods at different heating rates in air atmosphere were conducted by the TG-analyzer.Effects of heating rate and species on the DTG curves of wood were discussed.A two-pseudo-component and two-step model was used to describe the kinetics of thermal decomposition of wood in air atmosphere.Then,experiments on pyrolysis and combustion of wood under different heat flux were carried out on the apparatus to investigate the characteristics of initial stage of a fire.The surface temperature,mass loss rate and ignition time of several woods under relatively low and high heat flux were all studied in the work,and it was found that the kinetic mechanisms and thermal behaviors of several woods containing similar fixed carbon tended to be similar under relatively high heat flux.

Abstract:As a typical forestry waste, bamboo has gained increasing attention for its potential applications. In order to optimize its valorization, understanding the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of bamboo pyrolysis and combustion is crucial. In this study, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was employed to examine bamboo powder's pyrolysis and combustion behaviors under different temperature ramps in nitrogen and air environments, and the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were evaluated using the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO), Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), and Starink (STR) model-free approaches. The main findings are as follows. (1) The thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) (DTG) curves reveal that bamboo pyrolysis occurs in three distinct stages: drying, devolatilization, and carbonization. Similarly, combustion also proceeds through three stages: drying, devolatilization, and char combustion. Notable differences in the temperature ranges of the key stages were observed between pyrolysis and combustion. (2) The activation energies during the oxidative devolatilization stage of combustion are notably lower compared to those during pyrolysis devolatilization. The disparity in activation energy is even more pronounced in the third stage. (3) Thermodynamic analysis shows that the pyrolysis and combustion of bamboo are endothermic and non-spontaneous. It can be stably converted into value-added energy through the pyrolysis or combustion process. This study provides essential data to aid in designing and scaling up the thermochemical conversion processes for bamboo and promote its efficient valorization of bioenergy.

Abstract:Even though numerous studies are led to wood pyrolysis kinetics, there's only a few giving service to fire safety research, less yet on pyrolytic heat effect especially. This paper carried out TG, DTG, and DSC analysis techniques on three kinds of wood at different heating rates. As temperature increases the wood pyrolysis process shows four distinct phases with dissimilar change of chemicophysical properties and heat effect. Kinetic parameters have been obtained by differential quotient method and integral method and the two series were of good accordance with each other.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition characteristics and kinetics of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), corn stover (CS), and their blended mixture (1:1 w/w ratio) during non-catalytic and catalytic co-pyrolysis were studied via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated synergetic interactions between the biomass and the plastics during co-pyrolysis as measured by weight loss (ΔW); this effect was attributed to radical interactions during co-pyrolysis. The pyrolysis catalysts with higher nickel loadings (5%, 10%, and 15%) appreciably diminished the solid residue. Kinetic studies indicated that the pyrolysis was a first-order reaction based on the fitted thermogravimetric data. The activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A) ranged between 26.13 kJ/mol to 392.67 kJ/mol and between 156.24 min-1 to 9.19 x 1023 min-1, respectively. There was a kinetic compensation effect (KCE) observed among the two kinetic parameters. The activation energy (E) decreased for each pyrolysis stage with the presence of a catalyst. The results indicated that catalytic co-pyrolysis could provide great potential for reducing the pyrolysis energy input.

Since plants and soil are in close contact in the field, the thermal decomposition of their mixture may involve chemical interactions of the individual components. In this work, thermogravimetric experiments with two plant fuels, three soil materials, and their six mixtures were conducted under nitrogen and air atmospheres to investigate the thermal decomposition interactions of plant-soil mixtures. The results show that the interactions between plants and soil are closely associated with atmospheric conditions. The effect of interactions in pyrolysis is weaker than that in combustion. The strength of interactions is controlled by soil type in combustion. A method for evaluating the influence of mixing on the kinetic mechanism is proposed. It is suggested that the interactions in the thermal decomposition of mixtures under the air atmosphere lead to variations in the degradation of lignin and biomass char.
Pyrolysis and Combustion Mechanism of Wood with Distribution Activation Energy Model

Abstract:Thermogravimetric analysis(TG) was used to study the pyrolysis characteristics of three species of woods,Dahurica pall,Quercus mongolica,and Pinus Sylvestris var,at different heating rates,in the stream of air or N_2.Activation energies of them were obtained by using distribution activation energy model(DAEM).The results indicate that,in air atmosphere,the pyrolysis processes of all the samples were divided into three stages according to the peaks on the DTG profiles.When the mass loss rate attains from 5~0/_0 to 60~0/_0,the activation energies of samples are all between 110 and 250 kJ/mol,not monotonously increasing.In nitrogen atmosphere,two main mass loss stages were found.At final temperature when the mass loss rate attains from 10~0/_0 to 85~0/_0,the activation energies of these woods are all between 165 and 230 kJ/mol,and the curves of activation energies show W shape.The distribution function of energy reveals the rule that the reaction activity of mass changes in different stages of pyrolysis,which helps to investigate the mechanisms of pyrolysis,gasification and combustion.
