Abstract:Water quality is one of the most critical indicators of environmental pollution and it affects all of us. Water contamination can be accidental or intentional and the consequences are drastic unless the appropriate measures are adopted on the spot. This review provides a critical assessment of the applicability of various technologies for real-time water quality monitoring, focusing on those that have been reportedly tested in real-life scenarios. Specifically, the performance of sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers is evaluated in detail, also giving insights into their principle of operation, stability in real on-site applications and mass production options. Such characteristics as sensing range and limit of detection are given for the most promising systems, that were verified outside of laboratory conditions. Then, novel trends of using microwave spectroscopy and chemical materials integration for achieving a higher sensitivity to and selectivity of pollutants in water are described.

Abstract:Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons (CHCs) are toxic and carcinogenic contaminants commonly found in environmental samples, and efficient online detection of these contaminants is still challenging at the present stage. Here, we report an advanced Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) sensor for in-situ and simultaneous detection of multiple CHCs, including monochlorobenzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, and chloroform. The polycrystalline silver halide sensor fiber had a unique integrated planar-cylindric geometry, and was coated with an ethylene/propylene copolymer membrane to act as a solid phase extractor, which greatly amplified the analytical signal and contributed to a higher detection sensitivity compared to the previously reported sensors. This system exhibited a high detection sensitivity towards the CHCs mixture at a wide concentration range of 5~700 ppb. The FTIR-ATR sensor described in this study has a high potential to be utilized as a trace-sensitive on-line device for water contamination monitoring.

A Robust Optical Sensor for Remote Multi-Species Detection Combining Frequency-Division Multiplexing and Normalized Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy

Abstract:By combining frequency-division multiplexing and normalized wavelength modulation spectroscopy, a robust remote multi-species sensor was developed and demonstrated for practical hydrocarbon monitoring. Independently modulated laser beams are combined to simultaneously interrogate different gas samples using an open-ended centimeter-size multipass cell. Gas species of interest are demodulated with the second harmonics to enhance sensitivity, and high immunity to laser power variation is achieved by normalizing to the corresponding first harmonics. Performance of the optical sensor was experimentally evaluated using methane (CH4) and acetylene (C2H2) samples, which were separated by a 3-km fiber cable from the laser source. Sub-ppm sensitivity with 1-s time resolution was achieved for both gas species. Moreover, even with large laser intensity fluctuations ranging from 0 to 6 dB, the noise can be kept within 1.38 times as much as that of a stable intensity case. The reported spectroscopic technique would provide a promising optical sensor for remote monitoring of multi hazardous gases with high robustness.

Abstract:A mid-infrared attenuated total reflectance (MIR-ATR) sensor has been developed for chemical reaction monitoring. The optical setup of the compact and low-priced sensor consists of an IR emitter as light source, a zinc selenide (ZnSe) ATR prism as boundary to the process, and four thermopile detectors, each equipped with an optical bandpass filter. The practical applicability was tested during esterification of ethanol and formic acid to ethyl formate and water as a model reaction with subsequent distillation. For reference analysis, a Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectrometer with diamond ATR module was applied. On-line measurements using the MIR-ATR sensor and the FT-MIR spectrometer were performed in a bypass loop. The sensor was calibrated by multiple linear regression in order to link the measured absorbance in the four optical channels to the analyte concentrations. The analytical potential of the MIR-ATR sensor was demonstrated by simultaneous real-time monitoring of all four chemical substances involved in the esterification and distillation process. The temporal courses of the sensor signals are in accordance with the concentration values achieved by the commercial FT-MIR spectrometer. The standard error of prediction for ethanol, formic acid, ethyl formate, and water were 0.38 mol L − 1, 0.48 mol L − 1, 0.38 mol L − 1, and 1.12 mol L − 1, respectively. A procedure based on MIR spectra is presented to simulate the response characteristics of the sensor if the transmission ranges of the filters are varied. Using this tool analyte specific bandpass filters for a particular chemical reaction can be identified. By exchanging the optical filters, the sensor can be adapted to a wide range of processes in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and beverage industries.

Abstract:Infrared attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy is a common laboratory technique for the analysis of highly absorbing liquids and solids, and a variety of ATR accessories for laboratory FTIR spectrometers are available. However, ATR spectroscopy is rarely found in industrial processes, where compact, robust, and cost-effective sensors for continuous operation are required. Here, narrowband photometers are more appropriate than FTIR instruments. We show the concept and implementation of a compact Si-based ATR module with a four-channel microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) detector. Measurements of liquid mixtures demonstrate the suitability for applications in the chemical industry. Apart from sapphire (for wavelengths below 5 μm ) and diamond (extending to the far-infrared region), most materials for ATR elements do not have either high enough infrared transmission or sufficient mechanical and chemical stability to be exposed to process fluids, abrasive components, or aggressive cleaning agents. However, using diamond coatings on Si improves the stability of the sensor surface. In addition, by proper choice of incidence angle and coating thickness, an enhancement of the ATR absorbance is theoretically expected and demonstrated by first experiments using a compact sensor module with a diamond-coated Si ATR element.
Verification of performance with the automated direct optical TIRF immunosensor (River Analyser) in single and multi-analyte assays with real water samples

Abstract:In order to verify the reproducibility, precision, and robustness of the optical immunosensor River Analyser (RIANA), we investigated two common statistical methods to evaluate the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ). Therefore, we performed a simultaneous multi-analyte calibration with atrazine, bisphenol A, and estrone in Milli-Q water. Using an automated biosensor, it was possible for the first time to achieve a LOD below 0.020 microg L(-1) using a common statistically based method without sample pre-treatment and pre-concentration for each of the analytes in a simultaneous multi-analyte calibration. This biosensor setup shows values comparable to those obtained by more classical analytical methods. Based on this calibration, we measured spiked and un-spiked real water samples with complex matrices (samples from different water bodies, from ground water sources, and tap water samples). The comparison between our River Analyser and common analytical methods (like GC-MS and HPLC-DAD) shows overall comparable values for all three analytes. Furthermore, a calibration of isoproturon (IPU) (in single analyte mode) resulted in a LOD of 0.016 microg L(-1), and a LOQ of 0.091 microg L(-1). In compliance with guidelines of the Association of Analytical Communities International (AOAC), six out of nine recovery rates (recovery rate: measured concentration divided by real concentration in percent) for three surface water samples with different matrices (spiked and un-spiked) could be obtained between 70 and 120% (recovery rates between 70 and 120%, as demanded by the guidelines of the AOAC International). The reproducibility was checked by measuring replica of each sample within independent repetitions. Robustness could be demonstrated by long-term stability tests of the biosensor surface. These studies show that the biosensor used offers the necessary reproducibility, precision, and robustness required for an analytical method.

A Colorimetric Sensor Array for Organics in Water

Abstract:Molecular recognition of organic compounds in aqueous solutions is inherently challenging due to the potential interference from the very high concentration of water. Here we present a simple colorimetric sensor array that probes a wide range of chemical properties. By printing hydrophobic dyes on a hydrophobic membrane, sensor arrays are easily prepared that provide substantial chemical selectivity for the identification and quantification of various organics (both single compounds and complex mixtures) dissolved in water. It is possible to differentiate easily even among closely related organic compounds. Upon immersion in aqueous solutions, digital imaging of the dye array before and after exposure to an analyte provide a color change profile that is a fingerprint for the organic components of the solution. Facile identification of a wide variety of aqueous organic solutions is possible over a concentration range of 0.1 M to 1 muM. Complex mixtures present no inherent difficulty; for example, a series of commercial soft drinks were easily distinguished using the colorimetric sensor array approach.

Abstract:We demonstrate a sensing scheme for liquid analytes that integrates multiple optical fiber sensors in a near-infrared spectrometer. With a simple optofluidic method, a broadband radiation is encoded in a time-domain interferogram and distributed to different sensing units that interrogate the sample simultaneously; the spectral readout of each unit is extracted from its output signal by a Fourier transform routine. The proposed method allows performing a multiparametric analysis of liquid samples in a compact setup where the radiation source, measurement units, and spectral readout are all integrated in a robust telecom optical fiber. An experimental validation is provided by combining a plasmonic nanostructured fiber probe and a transmission cuvette in the setup and demonstrating the simultaneous measurement of the absorption spectrum and the refractive index of water–methanol solutions.

Abstract:The widespread application of mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy for process monitoring is currently limited by the poor transmission of MIR light through fibre optics. In this work, the performance of a novel and robust MIR spectrometer has been evaluated for practical deployment in a pilot plant or production environment. The spectrometer utilises a Sagnac interferometer design containing no moving parts and is directly attached to an attenuated total reflectance probe, eliminating the need for fibre optics. The quantitative performance of the spectrometer for the in situ analysis of ternary solvent mixtures was assessed. The predictions obtained by partial least squares were accurate (root mean square error of prediction of < 1% w/w) and comparable to those of a benchmark Michelson-based spectrometer with a fibre-coupled probe, which is more amenable to process development in a laboratory or pilot plant. Calibration transfer between the two spectrometers was performed using the spectral space transformation method to mimic the scenario of the scale-up of a process from the laboratory to pilot scale or from a pilot plant to production scale, where the two different MIR instruments might be deployed. The ability to perform in situ reaction monitoring with the robust Sagnac-based spectrometer was then demonstrated. Spectra acquired during an esterification reaction were resolved using multivariate curve resolution, to produce concentration profiles of each component. These results demonstrate the suitability of this rugged spectrometer for quantitative in situ monitoring of liquid processes, opening up new opportunities for process monitoring in the MIR region.

Abstract:Quality control of liquids is an important part of analytical chemistry. The gold standard for measuring residual water in organic solvents and pharmaceutical applications is Karl Fischer titration. It has a high sensitivity, selectivity and accuracy. The downsides are a time-consuming offline analysis, together with the need for toxic reagents producing waste, and it suffers from poor inter-laboratory reproducibility. In this work, we present a high-performance lab-on-a-chip sensor exploiting mid-IR spectroscopy for liquid sensing. It is operating at 6.1 μm wavelength and is suitable for robust and flexible real-time in situ analysis of the residual water concentration in isopropyl alcohol. This is demonstrated in two experiments. A custom-made 60 μL flow cell is employed to measure only minute amounts of analyte in an inline configuration. In a second approach, the whole sensor is immersed into the analyte to demonstrate sensitive and rapid in situ operation on the millisecond time scale. This is confirmed by the ability for time resolved single water-droplet monitoring, while they are mixed into the liquid sample. We obtain a limit of detection between 120 ppm and 150 ppm with a concentration coverage spanning three orders of magnitude from 1.2 × 10-2%vol to 25%vol for the flow cell and 1.5 × 10-2%vol to 19%vol in the in situ configuration, respectively.
Characterization of aquatic particles by direct FTIR analysis of filters and quantification of elemental and molecular compositions

Abstract:This paper presents the first characterization of aquatic particles and particulate organic matter (POM) by attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) using particles deposited on filters. Particles from 30 water samples from the St. Lawrence System (Canada) were analyzed. ATR-FTIR spectra revealed changes in numerous organic and inorganic functional group contents. Particles from marine waters contained POM enriched in amide, N-H, and aliphatic groups, while terrigenous POM had more COO(-)/COOH and aromatic groups. The spectra showed the selective degradation of amide, N-H, aliphatic, and carbohydrate-like structures during the sinking of the particles. Partial least-squares (PLS) regression of the ATR-FTIR spectra was used to quantify 12 important elemental and molecular parameters, such as amino acids, bacterial biomarkers, and degradation indices. Most parameters were quantified with good accuracy compared to conventional methods (<15% error). The spectral regions leading to the best quantifications and the PLS loadings revealed that aromatic cycles, other unsaturated structures, and COO(-)/COOH groups were degraded at a much slower rate than N-molecules, such as amino acids, and carbohydrates. Marine POM was enriched in CH(3) groups. CH(3) groups appeared highly labile and abundant in bacterial POM. ATR-FTIR represents a new and powerful method for a rapid, inexpensive, and nondestructive characterization of particles collected by filtration revealing important biogeochemical processes involving POM.

Abstract:The development of fast and accurate sensors for nerve agents holds immense significance for homeland security and public health. However, the humidity interference from ambient environments and poor sensitivity for trace nerve agents are largely unsolved problems. To overcome the problems, a humidity-independent two-dimensional photonic crystal (2-D PC) sensor is developed by exploiting UiO-66-NH 2 2-D PC with excellent sensitivity coupled to a hydrophobic hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOFs) for detection sarin simulant dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP). Selective sensing results show that the HOFs@UiO-66-NH 2 2-D PC sensor presents the outstanding DMMP specificity, and the limit of detection (LOD) for DMMP response of the sensor can reach 508 ± 68 ppb at room temperature. Water-resistant experiments demonstrate that the HOFs@UiO-66-NH 2 2-D PC sensor shows excellent stability even under 80% relative humidity (RH). Moreover, the sensor also exhibits a rapid response/recovery time of 1 s/3 s and can maintain excellent sensing performance under heat-treatment of 200 °C and in the long-term storage (30 days). The adsorption kinetics and the hydrogen bond interaction are conducted to elucidate the mechanism of enhanced sensing DMMP properties. These results indicate the potential application of the sensor in the trace nerve agent's detection, especially in humidity environment.

Abstract:Combined in situ analysis of oceanic CO2 concentrations and diverse C and O isotope characteristics can offer a unique perspective with multiple isotopic tracing dimensions for identifying marine biogeochemical processes. Applying this strategy in marine environments is urgently required, yet it faces inherent challenges in terms of existing analytical methods and instruments, e.g., a lack of in situ sensors, limited detectable isotope variety, and low-temporal-resolution data. Through the proposed targeted strategies, the sensor is capable of providing high-temporal-resolution in situ measurement of all monosubstituted isotopes of dissolved CO2 (16O13C16O, 18O12C16O, and 17O12C16O) at marine background concentrations. The sensor is demonstrated to provide comparable precision to that of isotope ratio mass spectrometry. At 400 ppmv, the precision for R13C, R18O, and R17O could achieve 0.084, 0.042, and 0.013‰, respectively, for a 1 s integration time. By enabling a high-frequency in situ analysis in fixed-point time-series field deployment, a 17O anomaly with strong regularity is observed, which is not obvious in 18O and 13C, and therefore, the superiority of the proposed multidimensional in situ isotope tracing strategy is demonstrated. The developed sensor has great potential to open up new prospects for advancing marine carbon research.

Abstract:The development of porphyrin-embedded mesoporous organosilicate materials for application to the detection of volatile hydrocarbon solvents is described. Design of the receptor and optical indicator construct begins with parallel selection of the porphyrin indicator and design of the mesoporous sorbent. For the porphyrin indicator, high binding affinity and strong changes in spectrophotometric character upon target interaction are desired. The sorbent should provide high target binding capacity and rapid binding kinetics. A number of porphyrin/metalloporphyrin variants and organosilicate sorbents were evaluated to determine the characteristics of their interaction with the targets, benzene, toluene, and hexane. The selected porphyrin candidates were covalently immobilized within a benzene-bridged sorbent. This construct was applied to the detection of targets using both fluorescence- and reflectance-based protocols. The use of red, green, and blue (RGB) color values from the constructs in a highly simplified detection scheme is described.

Abstract:Public awareness of the toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has led to increased requirements for direct measurement of these substances. This work reports the sensitive detection of VOCs at the ppb level by an interferometric sensor based on the multilayer silica-nanochannel membrane (MSNM). The MSNM is fabricated by layer-by-layer stacking of a free-standing ultrathin SNM composed of regularly ordered channels with an ultrasmall diameter of about 2.3 nm and an ultrahigh density of about 4 x 10(12) cm(-2). Light reflected from parallel interfaces of the MSNM gives rise to the interferometric pattern with constructive and destructive fringes. The adsorption of VOCs to a highly porous MSNM varies the refractive index of the MSNM, resulting in the shift of the reflectometric interference spectrum (RIS) and thus yielding highly sensitive responses with a limit of detection (LOD) at the ppb level. Moreover, the sensor selectively responds to polar ethanol and acetone, as well as aromatic benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene, but is insensitive to nonpolar ethane or hexane. The selectivity most likely arises from hydrogen bonding and dipole interaction of VOCs with silica surface.
