Abstract:Hydroxyl-modified graphitic carbon nitride (HUCN) with interconnected open-framework is fabricated by hydrolysis of urea-derived graphitic carbon nitride (UCN) in an aqueous NaOH solution followed by a self-assembly in dialysis process. Compared with bulk graphitic carbon nitride (UCN), HUCN possesses more advantages such as plentiful exposed active sites, fast photogenerated charge carrier separation rate and more negative conduction band edge potential. These advantages bestow the HUCN remarkably higher simulated sunlight photocatalytic reduction ability towards an aqueous Cr(VI) as compared with UCN. By the combination of the experimental results including photoelectrochemistry and electron scavenger with the DFT calculated electrostatic potential (ESP) distribution, a possible reaction mechanism for the simulated sunlight photocatalytic reduction of highly toxic and carcinogenic Cr(VI) to non-toxic Cr(III) is put forward tentatively.

Abstract:As a renewable and low-cost biomacromolecule with high aromaticity and carbon content, lignin is a promising raw material for preparation of versatile carbon materials. Herein, we present a facile one-pot approach to prepare PdZn alloy nanocluster catalysts supported on N-doped lignin-derived nanolayer carbon through facile pyrolysis of melamine-mixed lignin-Pd-Zn complex. The dispersion of the PdZn alloy nanoclusters could be effectively modulated by varying the addition of melamine and the molar ratio of Pd and Zn salts. PdZn alloy nanocluster catalysts (Pd-Zn 29 @N 10 C) with ultra-small particle size (about 0.47 nm) were prepared when 10 times of melamine (relative to lignin weight) was added and the molar ratio of Pd and Zn salts was 1:29. Thereby, the catalyst presented superior catalytic activity for reduction of Cr(VI) to harmfulless Cr(III), significantly better than the two references 10 C (without Pd addition) and Pd-Zn 29 @C (without N doping), as well as the commercial Pd/C. In addition, thanks to the strong anchoring of the PdZn alloy on the N-doped nanolayer support, the Pd-Zn 29 @N 10 C catalysts also exhibited good reusability. Consequently, the current study provides a straightforward and feasible method for producing highly dispersed PdZn alloy nanoclusters by lignin coordination, and further demonstrates its excellent applicability in hexavalent chromium reduction.

Abstract:In this paper we prepared a novel material of activated carbon/nanoscale zero-valent iron (C-Fe(0)) composite. The C-Fe(0) was proved to possess large specific surface area and outstanding reducibility that result in the rapid and stable reaction with Cr (VI). The prepared composite has been examined in detail in terms of the influence of solution pH, concentration and reaction time in the Cr (VI) removal experiments. The results showed that the C-Fe(0) formed a micro-electrolysis which dominated the reaction rate. The Micro-electrolysis reaches equilibrium is ten minutes. Its reaction rate is ten times higher than that of traditional adsorption reaction, and the removal rate of Cr reaches up to 99.5%. By analyzing the obtained profiles from the cyclic voltammetry, PXRD and XPS, we demonstrate that the Cr (VI) is reduced to insoluble Cr (III) compound in the reaction.

Abstract:In the present study, a highly active reaction system of nanoscale zero-valent (nZVI) was successfully established by enhancing nZVI with a biodegradable complexing agent (CA) and applied to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal. Both iminodisuccinic acid (IDS) and N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic (GLDA) are good biodegradable CAs with strong ability to Cr(III)/Fe(II)/Fe(III). Cr(VI) (10.0 mg L-1) removal efficiency by nZVI increased from 60.1% to 100.0% with the addition of 4.0 mmol L-1 IDS or GLDA for 60 min. A characterization analysis suggested that nZVI and CA enhanced Cr(VI) removal by decreasing the surface passivation layer, which was expected to be (CrxFe1-x)(OH)3. In addition, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH, and appropriate CA dosage (4.0 mmol L-1) and temperature (25.0 degrees C) were beneficial for the efficient reduction of Cr(VI). An amount of 94.8% of Cr(VI) removal was achieved within the initial 2 min when the experiment conditions were as follows: 0.1 g L-1 nZVI, 4.0 mmol L-1 GLDA, the temperature at 25.0 degrees C, an initial pH of 7.0, and stirring at 200 r min-1. And the Cr(VI) removal by GLDA improved nZVI maintained above 84.3% after three consecutive cycles. The results indicate CA-enhanced-nZVI could be a promising approach for the Cr(VI) removal in a solution.
Efficient Hexavalent Chromium Removal by Nano-Cerium Oxide Functionalized Biochar: Insight into the Role of Reduction

Abstract:The strong toxicity of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) have spurred great interests in developing an effective technology to remove it from water. In this study, a cost-effective and recyclable composite nano-cerium oxide functionalized peanut shell biochar (BC-Ce) was synthetized via impregnation-precipitation-pyrolysis process and employed for simultaneous adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) in water. The BC-Ce possessed better Cr(VI) adsorption potential, and its maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir achieved 47.83 mg g- 1. Simultaneously, the as-prepared composite displayed obvious reduction behavior for Cr(VI) and partially adsorbed Cr(VI) was reduced to less toxic Cr(III). The effects of composite dosage (0.2-4 g L-1), initial Cr(VI) concentration (20-200 mg L-1) and pH (3-9) on Cr(VI) removal were also investigated. Characterization results indicated that the Cr(VI) reduction induced by BC-Ce was mainly attributed to the comprehensive effect of oxygen-containing functional group (OFGs), carbon-centered persistent free radicals (PFRs), oxygen vacancies and graphitic structure in BC-Ce. The CeO2 supported on the surface of BC facilitated the generation of more OFGs (phenolic-OH and C-O), PFRs and oxygen vacancies, thus provided abundant sites for chemical reduction of Cr(VI). Moreover, the graphitic structure in BC-Ce promoted the transfer of electrons from graphite carbon to Cr (VI). This study provided a new insight into the removal mechanisms of Cr(VI) in water by BC-Ce. Except for the adsorption, the reduction behavior during Cr(VI) removal process by BC-based materials should not be overlooked.
Designed synthesis of demethylated-hydroxymethylated lignin-based adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) ions from wastewater

Abstract:Lignin-based adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) ions have attracted intensive attention due to the advantages of renewability, biodegradablity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, there are still a lot of challenges such as poor adsorption capacity, low lignin content in adsorbents, and harsh preparation conditions. Here, a tandem hydroxymethylation-demethylation method is proposed for preparing an excellent lignin-based Cr(VI) adsorbent (DHKL), which features with high lignin content (>85 wt%) and high hydroxyl content (up to 6.26 mmol/g) under milder conditions. The prepared DHKL exhibits an adsorption capacity reaching up to 1040.9 mg/g and can maintain this capacity even in the presence of other metal ions in the solution. Model analyses indicate that chemisorption occurring in a monolayer is the main process, which is spontaneous and endothermic. Structural changes of DHKL before and after adsorption indicated that Cr(VI) ions are mainly reduced to Cr(III) ions by hydroxyl groups with some of the absorbed Cr ions dispersed into the inner part of DHKL. Based on these results, the detailed possible adsorption mechanism is deduced, providing guidance for designing, producing and utilizing lignin-based adsorbents.
Liquid Phase Catalytic Hydrogenation Reduction of Cr(VI) Using Highly Stable and Active Pd/CNT Catalysts Coated by N-doped Carbon.

Abstract:Liquid catalytic hydrogenation is a green and cost-effective technique for the reductive removal of pollutants in water. Supported noble metals are the most frequently used catalysts in liquid phase catalytic hydrogenation, whereas marked catalyst deactivation is commonly identified. In this study, we coated supported Pd catalyst on carbon nanotube (denoted as Pd/CNT) by different overcoatings (including SiO2, carbon and N-doped carbon) to prevent catalyst deactivation. The activities of the coated catalysts for liquid phase catalytic hydrogenation reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) differed with the overcoating properties. Negligible Cr(VI) conversion was observed on SiO2 coated Pd/CNT, while feasible Cr(VI) reduction was identified on carbon coated (denoted as Pd/CNT@C) and N-doped carbon coated catalysts (denoted as Pd/CNT@CN). Pd/CNT@CN exhibited a much higher catalytic activity than Pd/CNT@C, which was ascribed to the stronger Cr(VI) adsorption on CN overcoating. The catalytic activity of Pd/CNT@CN was positively correlated with the conductivity and hydrophilicity of CN overcoating, which could be optimized by varying carbonization temperature. Furthermore, Pd/CNT@CN retained its initial activity after ten consecutive catalyst cycles without any deactivation, whereas Pd/CNT only retained 8.2% of its initial activity, reflecting much higher catalytic stability of Pd/CNT@CN than Pd/CNT. The findings in the present study highlight that liquid catalytic reduction using Pd/CNT@CN as the catalyst is a highly stable and effective method to remove Cr(VI) in water.
Using the inherent elements in yeast biomass to produce Ni2P/N-doped biocarbon composites for efficient hexavalent chromium reduction

Abstract:The heterogeneous catalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is an effective strategy for aqueous Cr(VI) contamination abatement, which requires the development of highly efficient, low-cost, and recyclable catalysts. Herein, Ni2P/N-doped biocarbon composites (Ni2P/N-BC) were fabricated through an anoxic pyrolysis process using NaCl and KCl as activators. A precursor of yeast biomass provided the essential C, N, and P elements for Ni2P/N-BC formation. When adopted for Cr(VI) reduction in the presence of oxalic acid as a reductant, the fabricated Ni2P/N-BC performed superior catalytic activity with a 100% Cr(VI) reduction efficiency within 10 min (Ni2P/N-BC-5 = 0.2 g L-1, oxalic acid = 0.4 g L-1, Cr(VI) = 20 mg L-1). Typical affecting parameters, e.g., catalyst dosage, oxalic acid loading, reaction temperature, initial solution pH, and water matrix, were investigated. Ni2P/N-BC exhibited good applicability in a broad pH range from 3.0 to 9.0 and in actual aquatic systems. Cr(VI) reduction efficiency remained 92.7% after five recycle runs. Such promising catalytic activity may originate from the well-crystallized Ni2P, N-doped biocarbon framework and high specific surface area of the materials. Preliminary reaction mechanism analysis indicated that the favorable charge state of Ni2P, fast hydrogen transfer, affinity of oxalic acid to Cr(VI), and inherent electron transfer in the biocarbon matrix contributed to effective Cr(VI) reduction. This work not only provides a facile and low-cost strategy to construct Ni2P/N-doped biocarbon nanosheet composite using environmentally benign biomass but also brings new insights for the remediation of Cr(VI) contamination.
Nitric Acid-Treated Blue Coke-Based Activated Carbon's Structural Characteristics and Its Application in Hexavalent Chromium-Containing Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:This study primarily focused on the efficient transformation of low-priced blue coke powder into a high-capacity adsorbent and aimed to address the pollution issue of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI))-laden wastewater and to facilitate the effective utilization of blue coke powder. A two-step method was utilized to fabricate a blue coke-based nitric acid-modified material (LCN), and the impact of nitric acid modification on the material's structure and its efficacy in treating Cr (VI)-contaminated wastewater was evaluated. Our experimental results illustrated that, under identical conditions, LCN exhibited superior performance for Cr (VI) treatment compared to the method employing only potassium hydroxide (LCK). The specific surface area and pore volume of LCN were 1.39 and 1.36 times greater than those of LCK, respectively. Further chemical composition analysis revealed that the functional group structure on the LCN surface was more conducive to Cr (VI) adsorption. The highest amount of Cr (VI) that LCN could bind was measured at 181.962 mg/g at 318 K. This was mostly due to chemisorption, which is dominated by redox reactions. The Cr (VI) removal process by LCN was identified to be a spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-increasing process. Several tests on recycling and reuse showed that LCN is a stable and effective chromium-containing wastewater adsorbent, showing that it could be used in many situations.

Concurrent adsorption and reduction of chromium(VI) to chromium(III) using nitrogen-doped porous carbon adsorbent derived from loofah sponge

Abstract:To develop highly effective adsorbents for chromium removal, a nitrogen-doped biomass-derived carbon (NHPC) was synthesized via direct carbonation of loofah sponge followed by alkali activation and doping modification. NHPC possessed a hierarchical micro-/mesoporous lamellar structure with nitrogen-containing functional groups (1.33 at%), specific surface area (1792.47 m2/g), and pore volume (1.18 cm3/g). NHPC exhibited a higher Cr(VI) adsorption affinity than the HPC (without nitrogen doping) or the pristine loofah sponge carbon (LSC) did. The influence of process parameters, including pH, dosage, time, temperature, and Cr(VI) concentration, on Cr(VI) adsorption by NHPC were evaluated. The Cr(VI) adsorption kinetics matched with the pseudo-second-order model (R2 ⩾ 0.9983). The Cr(VI) adsorption isotherm was fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model, which indicated the maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacities: 227.27, 238.10, and 285.71 mg/g at 298K, 308K, and 318K, respectively. The model analysis also indicated that adsorption of Cr(VI) on NHPC was a spontaneous, endothermal, and entropy-increasing process. The Cr(VI) adsorption process potentially involved mixed reductive and adsorbed mechanism. Furthermore, computational chemistry calculations revealed that the adsorption energy between NHPC and Cr(VI) (−0.84 eV) was lower than that of HPC (−0.51 eV), suggesting that nitrogen doping could greatly enhance the interaction between NHPC and Cr(VI).

Enhanced removal of hexavalent chromium by lignosulfonate modified zero valent iron: Reaction kinetic, performance and mechanism

Abstract:The application of lignin derivative as modifier is an economical and efficient approach to improve the reactivity of raw material towards pollutant removal. In this study, lignosulfonate modified zero valent iron (LS-ZVI) was firstly prepared by ball-milling method and utilized for Cr(VI) removal under different conditions. The comparative experiments showed that lignosulfonate modification could significantly enhance the Cr(VI) removal by ZVI from <10 % to 100 % within 90 min reaction. Compared to ZVI, the specific surface area of LS-ZVI increased 3.4 times and surface Fe(0) content increased from 3.4 % to 10.5 % due to the surface erosion, resulting in the high-efficient Cr(VI) removal. Solution and solid-phase analyses indicated that Fe(0) played dominated role and generated Fe(II) involved in Cr(VI) removal process, which mainly included rapid adsorption, reduction and co-precipitation. Batch experiments revealed that lower pH conditions were beneficial for Cr(VI) removal and the effect of co-existing ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, NO3-, Cl-, and SO42-) was negligible except the inhibitory effect of NO3-. Moreover, LS-ZVI also exhibited excellent removal performance for Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) with removal efficiency beyond 96.6 %. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach for enhancing the reactivity of commercial ZVI in the treatment of heavy metal pollution.

Abstract:Magnetic carbon materials promise distinct advantages in the decontamination of heavy metal ions. In this work, a novel interconnected hierarchical nickel-carbon () hybrid was synthesized by combining the solvothermal method with a one-step pyrolysis under argon atmosphere. Benefitting from 3D flower-like morphology, interconnected porous nanosheets, large surface area, and abundant Ni nanoparticles, hybrids can remove Cr(VI) within 25 min by using formic acid (FA) as a reductant at 25 ℃. Furthermore, the experimental parameters that can affect the material catalytic performance such as initial Cr(VI) concentration, catalyst dosage, FA concentration, and temperature were also investigated in detail. It was found that highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles contributed significantly to the reduction process. More importantly, the embedded Ni nanoparticles favor fast separation by a magnet and were helpful for the recycles use. This hybrid was obtained by a facile and easy scale-up method, resulting in the fast transformation of Cr(VI) into Cr(III).

Abstract:N dopping can enhance the electrochemical efficiency of carbon materials, but the effect of N on the electrochemical-mediated removal of Cr(VI) has been mostly ignored. Here, we report highly porous N-doped carbon spheres for electrochemical-mediated removal of Cr(VI), and the role of N on Cr(VI) removal has been systematically investigated using both experimental evaluations and theoretical validation. Experimental findings revealed that the removal capacity of Cr(VI) reached 186.5 mg·g−1 with a removal rate of 100%. In addition, the underlying processes for the role of N species have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The result agrees with the findings from the experimental evaluations thus suggesting that the removal process of Cr(VI) was mainly distributed by pyridinic-N and oxidized-N. This study has demonstrated that the removal of Cr(VI) by N species forms a crucial part in the removal of Cr(VI) using N-doped carbon materials and offers a possible alternative approach for enhancing the removal efficiency of carbon materials.

Abstract:Catalyst-mediated Cr(VI) reduction face significant challenges in by-product ion residues and catalyst cost. The development of low-cost catalysts and catalytic technologies with near-zero impurity introduction is therefore of great practical importance. This study developed a pristine biochar-mediated nanoconfinement strategy that facilitated the chemical reaction between oxalic acid (OA) and Cr(VI) with a stoichiometric ratio of 3.3:1. The method achieved the simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and OA removal, and completed the chromium removal process with near-zero impurity introduction after a precipitation process. While traditional catalyst-mediated reduction relied on mechanisms of functional group or active sites, this study took a novel path by adopting a focus on pore size. The structure–activity relationship, and experimental design demonstrated the predominant role of porous properties in the reaction, thus proposing a nanoconfinement Cr(VI) reduction mechanism. Continuous flow results revealed a treatment capacity of 1750 mL/h for the complete removal of Cr(VI) from Cr electroplating rinse water. The effluent, precipitated with CaO, had 0.06 mg/L of total Cr and 0.56 mg/L of OA, while the precipitate, recovered as CaCr 2 O 4 , demonstrated a total Cr recovery efficiency of 90.4%. Compared to industrial Cr(VI) chemical reduction, this study minimizes impurity introduction to the catalytic system. Abstract:Efficiently removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) using iron-based adsorbents under neutral pH conditions continues to pose a challenge. In this study, we constructed nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) supported by carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (OCNT) composites with iron-based dual active sites through the nitrilotriacetic acid modification (FOC-NA). The acid dissolution experiment, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman analysis proved these active sites consisted of iron-carboxylate complex (−COOFe(II)) and OCNT-confined nZVI (Fe 0 -in-OCNT). The existence of iron-based dual active sites enhanced electron transfer efficiency in Cr(VI) removal under neutral pH conditions. This leaded to a superior adsorption capacity for Cr(VI), as evidenced by a maximum adsorption capacity of 141.29 mg·g −1 at a pH of 6.5. Meanwhile, the formation of a Cr-containing product (−COOFe-O-Cr) on the surface of FOC-NA substantially hindered the re-release of chromium into the environment. Furthermore, this study proposed the significant involvement of active hydrogen atoms (H*) in the reduction of Cr(VI), as confirmed by quenching experiments and analyses using electron spin resonance (EPR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The formation pathway and energy barrier of H* and the −COOFe-O-Cr complex were analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study provided insights for the rational design of iron-based adsorbents with dual active sites to facilitate the activation of H* for Cr(VI) reduction under neutral pH conditions.

Abstract:A novel Cr (VI) removal material was designed and produced comprising multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a support with a high specific surface area and the loaded Fe–Ni bimetallic particles as catalytic reducing agents. Such a design permits the composite particle to perform the adsorption, reduction, and immobilisation of Cr (VI) quickly and efficiently. Due to MWCNTs' physical adsorption, Cr (VI) in solution aggregates in the vicinity of the composite, and Fe rapidly reduces Cr (VI) to Cr (III) catalysed by Ni. The results demonstrated that the Fe–Ni/MWCNTs exhibits an adsorption capacity of 207 mg/g at pH = 6.4 for Cr (VI) and 256 mg/g at pH 4.8, which is about twice those reported for other materials under similar conditions. The formed Cr (III) is solidified to the surface by MWCNTs and remains stable for several months without secondary contamination. The reusability of the composites was proven by retaining at least 90% of the adsorption capacity for five instances of reutilization. Considering the facile synthesis process, low cost of raw material, and reusability of the formed Fe–Ni/MWCNTs, this work shows great potential for industrialisation.

Abstract:N-doped biochar can effectively eliminate toxic Cr(VI). Here, N-doped hydrochar (NHC) was successfully synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of NH4Cl and bamboo, and employed to adsorb Cr(VI). The specific surface area, pore volume, and carbon and nitrogen contents of NHC all increase compared with the undoped hydrochar (HC). NH4Cl acts as a cheap nitrogen source to enhance the nitrogen content of hydrochar and as an acid catalyst to accelerate hydrochar carbonization. Adsorption experiments show NHC has higher adsorption capacity than HC for Cr(VI). XPS and FTIR imply the dominant mechanisms of adsorbing Cr(VI) onto two hydrochars are electrostatic attraction, reduction and complexation, but the contributions of surface functional groups in two hydrochars for elimination of Cr(VI) differ. The doped nitrogen in NHC is pivotal in adsorbing and reducing Cr(VI). Hence, NHC prepared from bamboo and NH4Cl by one-step HTC is a cheap and efficient adsorbent to eliminate aqueous Cr(VI).
