Abstract:The strong toxicity of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) have spurred great interests in developing an effective technology to remove it from water. In this study, a cost-effective and recyclable composite nano-cerium oxide functionalized peanut shell biochar (BC-Ce) was synthetized via impregnation-precipitation-pyrolysis process and employed for simultaneous adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) in water. The BC-Ce possessed better Cr(VI) adsorption potential, and its maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir achieved 47.83 mg g- 1. Simultaneously, the as-prepared composite displayed obvious reduction behavior for Cr(VI) and partially adsorbed Cr(VI) was reduced to less toxic Cr(III). The effects of composite dosage (0.2-4 g L-1), initial Cr(VI) concentration (20-200 mg L-1) and pH (3-9) on Cr(VI) removal were also investigated. Characterization results indicated that the Cr(VI) reduction induced by BC-Ce was mainly attributed to the comprehensive effect of oxygen-containing functional group (OFGs), carbon-centered persistent free radicals (PFRs), oxygen vacancies and graphitic structure in BC-Ce. The CeO2 supported on the surface of BC facilitated the generation of more OFGs (phenolic-OH and C-O), PFRs and oxygen vacancies, thus provided abundant sites for chemical reduction of Cr(VI). Moreover, the graphitic structure in BC-Ce promoted the transfer of electrons from graphite carbon to Cr (VI). This study provided a new insight into the removal mechanisms of Cr(VI) in water by BC-Ce. Except for the adsorption, the reduction behavior during Cr(VI) removal process by BC-based materials should not be overlooked.

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a priority pollutant in the USA and many other countries. This study investigated the simultaneous remediation of Cr(VI) in sediment enriched with quinone-reducing microorganisms via a closely coupled, biotic-abiotic pathway. The results showed that Cr(VI) remediation was achieved by sediment adsorption and reduction of quinone-reducing microorganism. Moreover, microorganism reduction of Cr(VI) could be continued when sediment adsorption was saturated after long-term Cr(VI) remediation. The acetate and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), which acted as exogenous carbon and electron shuttle, respectively, were two crucial factors. The optimum concentrations of acetate and AQDS were 5 mM and 1 mM when the initial Cr(VI) concentration was 10 mg/L. AQDS was recycled, and it acted in a catalytic-type manner for the bacterial reduction of Cr(VI). Thus, biological humus reduction might provide an extensive pathway for the sequestration and detoxification of Cr(VI) in anaerobic soils, water, and industrial effluents. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this paper we prepared a novel material of activated carbon/nanoscale zero-valent iron (C-Fe(0)) composite. The C-Fe(0) was proved to possess large specific surface area and outstanding reducibility that result in the rapid and stable reaction with Cr (VI). The prepared composite has been examined in detail in terms of the influence of solution pH, concentration and reaction time in the Cr (VI) removal experiments. The results showed that the C-Fe(0) formed a micro-electrolysis which dominated the reaction rate. The Micro-electrolysis reaches equilibrium is ten minutes. Its reaction rate is ten times higher than that of traditional adsorption reaction, and the removal rate of Cr reaches up to 99.5%. By analyzing the obtained profiles from the cyclic voltammetry, PXRD and XPS, we demonstrate that the Cr (VI) is reduced to insoluble Cr (III) compound in the reaction.

Abstract:The pollution of chromium wastewater is becoming more and more serious. Biological adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is an effective waste water treatment technology. In this work, non-treated leaves (NL), sulfuric acid modified leaves (SL), and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified leaves (CL) were used to remove Cr (VI) from the water. Indeed, leaves are highly effective and low-cost biosorbents, and were proven to achieve a recovery of resources from waste. In the batch experiments, the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto SL and CL was shown to be influenced by several factors, including the initial pH of the solution, the adsorbent dosage, and temperature. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results suggest that the reduction of Cr (VI) to the less harmful trivalent chromate Cr (III) occurred during the adsorption processes; this was followed by Cr (III) adsorption onto the surface of the adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained for Cr (VI) at 35 degrees C were 170.8 and 137.9 mg/g for SL and CL at pH 2, respectively. The results show that SL and CL, as cheap and effective biosorbents of Cr (VI), realized the recycling of wastes and have good application prospects.

Abstract:To efficiently treat low-concentration chromium wastewater at low cost, adsorbent iron-modified ceramsite (FCM) was successfully prepared. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, ζ potential and VSM. From the experimental results, the optimum adsorption pH, adsorbent dosage and adsorption time were 4, 1g/L and 120min, respectively. The percentage removal of Cr(VI) was 93% and the reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) was 74.3% when the concentration was 2mg/L. After 5cycles, using 0.1mol/L NaOH as the regeneration agent, the removal rate of Cr(VI) did not decrease significantly. Furthermore, the mechanism of deep reduction and adsorption, the process of regeneration, the kinetics and adsorption isotherms were also explored. This paper can provide theoretical and technical support for reducing the toxicity and the advanced treatment of hexavalent chromium.

Abstract:The widely spread chromium (Cr) contamination is rising environmental concerns, while the reutilization of agro-industrial by-products are also urgently demanded due to their potential risks. In this study, we prepared the integrated micro-electrolysis composites (IMC) through a facile one-pot method with red mud and rice straw. The effects of components relatively mass ratios as well as pyrolysis temperature were analyzed. The XRD, XPS, SEM, FTIR, and various techniques proved the IMC was successfully synthesized, which was also used to analyze the reaction mechanisms. In this study, the dosage of IMC, pH, adsorption time, and temperature of adsorption processes were explored, in the adsorption experiment of Cr(VI), dosage of IMC was 2 g/L (pH 6, 25 °C, and 200 rpm) for isothermal, while the concentration and contact time were also varied. According to the batch experiments, IMC exhibited acceptable removal capacity (190.6 mg/g) on Cr(VI) and the efficiency reached 97.74%. The removal mechanisms of adsorbed Cr(VI) were mainly elaborated as chemical reduction, complexation, co-precipitation, and physical adherence. All these results shed light on the facile preparation and agro-industrial by-products recycled as engineering materials for the heavy metals decontamination in wastewater.

Reduction Remediation of Hexavalent Chromium by Bacterial Flora in Cr(Vi) Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Chromium(VI) is a priority pollutant in soils and wastewaters and reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is a solution to this problem. In this study a low-cost method was proposed to adapt indigenous bacteria and use them to reduce Cr(VI) in solutions. The experiment results show that Cr(VI) could be efficiently reduced by indigenous bacteria under anaerobic and pH-unadjusted conditions. After about 24 h the concentration of Cr(VI) could be reduced from 21.74 mg/L to below 0.5 mg/L. The observed Cr(VI) reduction rates were affected by temperature and pH. Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions could be reduced to Cr(III) completely and partly be incepted by the organisms. Cr(VI) reduction was enzyme-mediated. It was not an energy-conserving process but a detoxification reaction. This method could be used in an anaerobic reactor to treat low-concentration wastewater or industrial water as the last step.
Carboxymethyl Cellulose Stabilized Acetylene Black Doped Zero-Valent Iron for Adsorption and Reduction of Cr(VI) in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Cr(VI) is a highly toxic substance that poses a significant threat to the environment and public health. A new type of composite material, consisting of iron nanoparticles and acetylene black-carboxymethyl cellulose, was developed for the purpose of adsorbing and reducing Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions. The acetylene black nanoparticles were evenly dispersed within the zero-valent iron particles, which were then coated with carboxymethyl cellulose to create an irregular porous shell structure. Carboxymethyl cellulose stabilized acetylene black doped zero-valent iron (ZVI/AB-CMC) demonstrated excellent Cr(VI) removal capability due to its high specific surface area and electrical conductivity, which are favorable for adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI). ZVI/AB-CMC was able to remove 98.6% of Cr(VI) in just 2 h at a concentration of 50 mg L −1 , with a maximum adsorption capacity of 116.30 mg g −1 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the removal of Cr(VI) involved electrostatic attraction, reduction, and precipitation. Cr(VI) ions were first adsorbed onto the surface of ZVI/AB-CMC by electrostatic attraction, then reduced to less toxic Cr(III), and finally immobilized on the composite material. Compared to other traditional and newly reported materials, ZVI/AB-CMC demonstrated superior adsorption activity for Cr(VI) and was an effective treatment option for Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater.

Abstract:Emerging chromium (Cr) species have attracted increasing concern. A majority of Cr species, especially hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), could lead to lethal effects on human beings, animals, and aquatic lives even at low concentrations. One of the conventional water-treatment methodologies, adsorption, could remove these toxic Cr species efficiently. Additionally, adsorption possesses many advantages, such as being cost-saving, easy to implement, highly efficient and facile to design. Previous research has shown that the application of different adsorbents, such as carbon nanotubes (carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) and its derivatives), activated carbons (ACs), biochars (BCs), metal-based composites, polymers and others, is being used for Cr species removal from contaminated water and wastewater. The research progress and application of adsorption for Cr removal in recent years are reviewed, the mechanisms of adsorption are also discussed and the development trend of Cr treatment by adsorption is proposed.

Rapid Cr(VI) reduction structure in chromium contaminated soil: The UV-assisted electrokinetic circulation of background iron

Abstract:Substantially decreasing the severe hazards connected with the toxic Cr(VI), developing effective reduction remediation strategies may be crucial under favorable economic conditions for the contaminated soil containing Cr(VI) to protect human health. Several typical enhancers (phosphate, fulvic acid, citric acid) were used to test electrokinetic remediation (EKR) coupled with UV radiation-induced photochemical reduction for contaminated soil containing Cr(VI). The added citrate, while improving the Cr(VI) electromigration, worked as the ultimate sacrificial electron donors, with the dissolved soil background Fe(III) as electron shuttle, to Cr(VI) rapid reduction. The dissolved soil background Fe(III) convert into Fe(II) ions through the UV radiation-induced ligand-metal charge transfers reaction, which constituted a novel electrokinetic circulation reduction pathway for the elimination of surface-bound/dissolved Cr(VI) (difficult to electromigration) in the near-anodic soil layers. More than 80% dissolved and surface-bound Cr(VI) was eliminated from the soil. In particular, the dissolved and surface-bound Cr(VI) was enhanced by more than 62.37% removal in near-anodic soil layers compared to conventional citric acid-enhanced EKR and provided no extra cost other than UV radiation. This configuration may be a cost-effective and feasible remediation design in the future for the in-situ Cr(VI) reduction of contaminated sites.
Enhanced removal of hexavalent chromium by lignosulfonate modified zero valent iron: Reaction kinetic, performance and mechanism

Abstract:The application of lignin derivative as modifier is an economical and efficient approach to improve the reactivity of raw material towards pollutant removal. In this study, lignosulfonate modified zero valent iron (LS-ZVI) was firstly prepared by ball-milling method and utilized for Cr(VI) removal under different conditions. The comparative experiments showed that lignosulfonate modification could significantly enhance the Cr(VI) removal by ZVI from <10 % to 100 % within 90 min reaction. Compared to ZVI, the specific surface area of LS-ZVI increased 3.4 times and surface Fe(0) content increased from 3.4 % to 10.5 % due to the surface erosion, resulting in the high-efficient Cr(VI) removal. Solution and solid-phase analyses indicated that Fe(0) played dominated role and generated Fe(II) involved in Cr(VI) removal process, which mainly included rapid adsorption, reduction and co-precipitation. Batch experiments revealed that lower pH conditions were beneficial for Cr(VI) removal and the effect of co-existing ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, NO3-, Cl-, and SO42-) was negligible except the inhibitory effect of NO3-. Moreover, LS-ZVI also exhibited excellent removal performance for Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) with removal efficiency beyond 96.6 %. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach for enhancing the reactivity of commercial ZVI in the treatment of heavy metal pollution.

Abstract:Cr (VI) is indispensable in industrial manufacturing, and its extensive use leads to severe heavy-metal pollution in the water environment around people, posing a great danger to physical health and living environment of multitudinous organisms. Expanded graphite (EG) is considered as a typical material for adsorption, while nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can be applied to degrade and sedimentate various organic or inorganic pollutants. In this study, a simultaneous collaboration of EG and nZVI is carried out, with the investigation on the influence of different test conditions for adsorption performances. These findings demonstrate that nZVI@EG manifests favourable adsorptive performance on the removal of hexavalent chromium efficiently. nZVI, acting as an electron donor, is supposed to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III), turning itself into iron oxide or hydroxide. The whole process is an exothermic reaction, accompanying chemical reduction and physical adsorption. And Cr (III) is fastened on the appearance by deposition of chromium hydroxide or ferrochromium complex precipitation, which greatly reduces the total chromium content in the aqueous solution. Herein, as a new composite adsorbent, nZVI@EG shows promising prospects of practical applications in water contamination and environmental remediation.

Abstract:To eliminate trace toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from water with different pHs, researchers focused on adsorption, reduction of Cr(VI) to trivalent chromium with followed precipitation while the complex and costly reactivity regulations via adjusting pHs was inevitable. Here we exploit Fe-Cu nanocomposites (CnZVI/Cu) with galvanic reactions and engineered nanoconfinement effect for removing Cr(VI) from acidic/alkaline water directly, consisting of phosphorylated cracked nanoscale zero-valent iron (CnZVI, crack width of 1–2 nm) anode and Cu aggregates cathode. The formed primary battery exhibits strong electrostatic interactions towards ions and outstanding reactivity of reduction and precipitation at acidic/alkaline conditions. The pH inside the cracks at neutral or alkaline conditions is calculated to turn lower for enhancing the dynamics relevant to remediation. Benefiting from those two effects, the removal efficiencies of Cr(VI) through CnZVI/Cu attain more than 99.5 % at pH ≤ 8 and even 96 % at pH of 12 in only 30 min, outperforming the previous works. Its protection on beings (water spinach, zebrafish, and cell) from suffering poisonous Cr(VI), control of adsorbed Cr from migration, and magnetic collectability demonstrate the admirable removal performance, biosafety, and stability, respectively. This work proposes highly-efficient, eco-friendly, convenient, and low-cost technology to scavenge Cr(VI) from acidic/alkaline water.

Abstract:Aqueous hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) treatment and chromium resource recovery toward Cr-containing wastes are of significant importance and necessity to both wastewater remediation and resource recovery. Herein, via mild photoreaction conditions with isopropanol (IPA) as an electron donor, a catalyst-free strategy for aqueous Cr(VI) extraction to form an insoluble polyhydroxy Cr(V) complex is developed for the first time. Aqueous Cr(VI) with concentration from 5 to 150 ppm can be efficiently extracted with high selectivity even in the presence of coexisting ions, and the total Cr concentration in residue solution can be as low as 0.5 ppm. The Cr resource could be efficiently recovered as pure Cr2O3 by calcinating the resulting Cr(V) precipitate. Outstanding extraction efficiency could be realized with various IPA concentrations (1.3-12.0 mol/L) by coordinately tuning the pH value to promote the formation of Cr(VI)-IPA ester. The formed ester undergoes intramolecular electron transition under visible light irradiation, resulting in a polyhydroxy solid-state Cr(V) intermediate complex. The controlled pH value blocks further reduction of Cr(V) to soluble Cr(III); thus the insoluble Cr(V) intermediate complex is stabilized thermodynamically under ambient conditions. Because of its electric neutrality property and the strong intermolecule interaction via hydrogen bonds, a dioxo-bridged di-nuclear Cr(V) complex {Cr2(μ-O)2(OH)4[OCH(CH3)2]2} is finally precipitated as the main product. Satisfactory extraction and recovery of Cr from chromium-plating wastewater and discarded stainless steel verify that this approach is ideal for both one-step purification of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater and selective resource recovery from Cr-containing solid wastes in practical application.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel method to eliminate nocuous Cr(VI) from chromium slag with poplar lignin by electrochemical treatment in sulfuric acid solution. In this electrochemical process, self-made Ti/SnO2-Sb anode and graphite cathode were applied, and the oxidative degradation of lignin proceeded simultaneously with the reduction of Cr(VI) in one pot. The influences of pivotal factors on electrocatalytic redox efficiency were investigated, such as chromium slag concentration, lignin concentration, current density, sulfuric acid concentration, and reaction time. The results showed that the elimination rate of Cr(VI) in chromium slag was 97.16 ± 1.13% and the total yield of lignin degradation products reached 93.78 g/kg lignin under the optimal conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-visible spectrophotometer studies confirmed that most of the Cr(VI) ions were reduced to Cr(III) ions with the aid of lignin, and a small amount of Cr(VI) ions were adsorbed by lignin residue. Importantly, this method provides a typical example of "waste control by waste", which is treating waste chromium slag with waste lignin that can be an effective way to eliminate Cr(VI).

Abstract:A nano-zero-valent iron loaded with 2-aminoterephthalic acid cross-linked chitosan/bentonite (2ACB@nZVI) was developed to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution through adsorption-reduction. It was characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, SEM, EDS, electrochemistry and XPS. This analysis showed that chitosan cross-linked bentonite not only enhanced the adsorption effect of chitosan and its chemical stability, but also provided a good carrier for loading nZVI and effectively improves its reaction activity. The optimal mass ratios of chitosan: bentonite and 2ACB:nZVI for synthesizing the 2ACB@nZVI composite were 3:1 and 1:4, respectively. The pH value had a great influence on the removal rate of Cr(VI), and its optimal value was 2.0. This is because nZVI was more susceptible to corrosion under acidic conditions, and a large amount of Fe(II) was leached to reduce the adsorbed Cr(VI) on the surface of 2ACB@nZVI. The Cr(VI) removal by 2ACB@nZVI constituted a spontaneous endothermic reaction, aligning with both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, with a maximum adsorption capacity reached 406.36 mg g −1 at 318 K. 2ACB@nZVI had a strong tolerance to co-existing ions, and the removal rate remained about 80 % after aging for 30 days or six cycles. The main mechanisms included electrostatic adsorption, complexation, reduction, and coprecipitation. Reduction contributed 86.67 % to the removal of Cr(VI), and Fe(II) was the key to Cr(VI) reduction. This study provided a new idea for the efficient treatment of Cr(VI) wastewater.

Abstract:Lignin-based adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) ions have attracted intensive attention due to the advantages of renewability, biodegradablity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, there are still a lot of challenges such as poor adsorption capacity, low lignin content in adsorbents, and harsh preparation conditions. Here, a tandem hydroxymethylation-demethylation method is proposed for preparing an excellent lignin-based Cr(VI) adsorbent (DHKL), which features with high lignin content (>85 wt%) and high hydroxyl content (up to 6.26 mmol/g) under milder conditions. The prepared DHKL exhibits an adsorption capacity reaching up to 1040.9 mg/g and can maintain this capacity even in the presence of other metal ions in the solution. Model analyses indicate that chemisorption occurring in a monolayer is the main process, which is spontaneous and endothermic. Structural changes of DHKL before and after adsorption indicated that Cr(VI) ions are mainly reduced to Cr(III) ions by hydroxyl groups with some of the absorbed Cr ions dispersed into the inner part of DHKL. Based on these results, the detailed possible adsorption mechanism is deduced, providing guidance for designing, producing and utilizing lignin-based adsorbents.
Removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution by different surface-modified biochars: Acid washing, nanoscale zero-valent iron and ferric iron loading

Abstract:Willow residue biochar (BC) and modified biochars (hydrochloric acid washing (HBC), HBC loaded with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI-HBC), and HBC loaded with ferric iron (Fe3+-HBC)) after aging were used for aqueous Cr(VI) removal. HBC (>98.67%), nZVI-HBC (>98.86%), and Fe3+-HBC (>99.64%) kept high Cr(VI) removal rates under the acidic conditions within a wide pH range (<7.0), indicating their good adaptability to pH change because of aging. Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) was the dominant removal mechanism. The formation of COOH on BC, HBC, and nZVI-HBC indicates the oxidation of surface functional groups by Cr(VI) and simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction. The disappearance of nZVI peaks indicates the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by nZVI. The color reaction result demonstrated that the converted Fe2+ in Fe3+-HBC contributed to Cr(VI) reduction. Taking into account the removal efficiency, recyclability, cost, preparation process, and stability of adsorbents, Fe3+-HBC was recommended for Cr(VI) removal.

Abstract:Using KOH-modified wheat straw as the precursor, wheat straw biochar was produced through carbonization at 500 °C. Subsequently, a synthetic material containing nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was prepared via liquid phase reduction (nZVI-WSPC). To enhance its properties, chitosan (CTS) was used by crosslinking to form the new adsorbent named CTS@nZVI-WSPC. The impact of CTS on parameters such as mass ratio, initial pH value, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) in solution was investigated through one-factor experiments. Isotherm adsorption and thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the adsorption of Cr(VI) by CTS@nZVI-WSPC conforms to the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 147.93 mg/g, and the adsorption process is endothermic. Kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism, as elucidated by SEM, FTIR, XPS, and XRD, suggests that the process may involve multiple mechanisms, including pore adsorption, electrostatic adsorption, chemical reduction, and surface chelation. The adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) by CTS@nZVI-WSPC remains high after five cycles. The adsorbent is simple to operate, economical, efficient, and reusable, making it a promising candidate for the treatment of Cr(VI) in water.
