Abstract:Acoustic imaging is a powerful technique to localize and reconstruct source powers using microphone array, but it often involves timeconsuming and ill-posed inverse problems. In this paper, we propose to efficient build up the forward model of acoustic power propagation by using the convolution with the spatially invariant kernel. And kernel size and values are appropriately derived from the Symmetric Toepliz Block Toepliz of propagation matrix. For inverse problem, we then propose to apply hierarchical Variational Bayesian inference in order to achieve robust acoustic imaging in the colored background noises; Student's-t prior is explored to enforce the sparse distribution of acoustic powers and to obtain super resolution; moreover, wide dynamic range of estimated powers can be obtained thanks to the heavy tail of Student'st distribution; To achieve robust estimations, colored noise distributions are also modeled by the Student's-t prior, which does not excessively penalize large errors as the Gaussian prior does. Finally the proposed approach is compared with classical methods on the real data from wind tunnel experiments.

Abstract:The 14th Electromagnetic and Light Scattering Conference (ELS-XIV) was held at the Universit de Lille 1, Villeneuve d'Ascq, France on 17-21 June 2013. The conference was attended by 200 scientists from 26 countries. The scientific program included one plenary lecture, 12 invited reviews, 100 contributed oral talks, and 86 poster presentations. The program, the abstracts, and the slides of the oral presentations are available at the conference web site http:www-loa.univ-lille1.frELS-XIV. To highlight one of the traditional ELS themes, the ELS-XIV featured a special session on Remote sensing of aerosols and clouds using polarimetric observations. This session was sponsored and co-organized by the French space agency CNES and attracted representatives from nearly all research teams word-wide involved in the development and active use of space-borne, in situ, and ground-based polarimetric observations.
A Robust Super-Resolution Approach with Sparsity Constraint in Acoustic Imaging

Abstract:Acoustic imaging is a standard technique for mapping acoustic source powers and positions from limited observations on microphone sensors, which often causes an ill-conditioned inverse problem. In this article, we firstly improve the forward model of acoustic power propagation by considering background noises at the sensor array, and the propagation uncertainty caused by wind tunnel effects. We then propose a robust super-resolution approach via sparsity constraint for acoustic imaging in strong background noises. The sparsity parameter is adaptively derived from the sparse distribution of source powers. The proposed approach can jointly reconstruct source powers and positions, as well as the background noise power. Our approach is compared with the conventional beamforming, deconvolution and sparse regularization methods by simulated, wind tunnel data and hybrid data respectively. It is feasible to apply the proposed approach for effectively mapping monopole sources in wind tunnel tests.

Abstract:The 39th Scandinavian Symposium on Physical Acoustics was held at Geilo, Norway from January 31 to February 3, 2016. It was arranged by the Acoustics and Optics group of the Norwegian Physical Society, and was coordinated by Ulf Kristiansen and Erlend Magnus Viggen. This year, there were 48 participants, holding a total of 31 presentations on various topics in physical acoustics, such as ultrasonics, underwater sound propagation, waves in solids, flow acoustics, and sonar. After the conference, 9 of these presentations were submitted as papers to these proceedings.

Abstract:It's often difficult for the general public and young people to grasp the importance of acoustics in everyday life and its many branches and fields of application. However, it's equally complex for people working or studying acoustics to communicate to this audience while avoiding the same focus on detail as scientific publications. Science communication skills are seldom taught, and multi-disciplinary approaches are little used. This paper describes the work carried out as part of the ‘Fantastique acoustique—Fantastics acoustics' project, which aims to raise awareness of the acoustics-related research at four Québec universities and train students in science communication. Eight student teams were partnered with cartoonists to produce 3-page comic strips and an associated corpus (including references and videos). The steps involved in producing the magazine are described, as are some of the final works. In particular, a survey including the students and the artists identifies the main positive points and the most significant challenges of such a partnership.

Abstract:Semi-anechoic rooms are used for the acoustic characterisation of noise sources. They involve heavy infrastructures and thick absorbent lining. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a less expensive alternative by complementing a thin passive coating with an active technology. Previous work has achieved the active reduction of the pressure scattered by the reflective wall of a semi-anechoic room, in the 80–200 Hz frequency band. This work validated an innovative approach allowing to control the scattered pressure throughout the measurement volume, using a setup located over its periphery. This paper extends a previous presentation at Forum Acusticum dealing with the active control of the low-frequency reflections on the walls and ceiling of a semi-anechoic room [Pinhède et al., Forum Acusticum 2023, Torino, Italy, 11–15 September, 2023, https://doi.org/10.61782/fa.2023.0399]. We describe the design principles and the 2D semi-analytical and 3D finite element simulations of the control system that help optimise parameters such as the transducers number and locations. A full-scale demonstrator has been built to validate the control strategy. Acoustics measurements, which have been used to characterise the room acoustics and to update the simulation parameters are also presented and compared to an updated numerical model.

Abstract:The applications of acoustic focusing and acoustic asymmetric focusing (AAF) are severely constrained by the narrow frequency bandwidth. In this paper, we report broad bandwidth acoustic focusing lens and asymmetric acoustic focusing lens consisting of monolayer and dual-layer metamaterials, respectively. Additive manufacturing technology was utilized to fabricate the designed lens. Finite element analysis and experimental approaches are adopted to verify the performances of acoustic focusing and asymmetric acoustic focusing. The results demonstrate that the designed acoustic focusing lens can converge acoustic waves at the frequency from 4717 Hz to 7717 Hz. The excellent AAF effect can be realized at a large frequency range from 4717 Hz to 6717 Hz. The results of measurement are consistent well with the simulated ones. Besides, by changing the separation between the dual-layer metamaterials for the AAF lens, the focusing position can be controlled without changing the metamaterials structure. Our approach may offer an efficient method to design broadband acoustic focusing and AAF devices and promote the important applications in numerous practical fields, including acoustic absorption and noise reducing, acoustic energy harvesting, ultrasonic medicine and multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Physiological acoustics is a very hot topic in modern acoustic research, which is to study the hearing mechanism and the utterance of both humans and animals. It could be divided into two main aspects: physical acoustics of the ear and physiological acoustics. In physiological acoustics, there are some common research methods, such as objective experimental testing, subjective feelings evaluation survey statistical method, building the physical acoustic model and numerical simulation methods, etc. The authors are researching the accurate mathematical model of equal loudness curves, critical band and masking effects, by applying the holographic concept with several biological factors which are required to build a standard model. The cochlear emission information should be extracted from wavelet analysis method and two hearing protection technologies are being developed by band shielding.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel interdisciplinary approach to study the relationship between diffusive surface structures and their acoustic performance. Using computational design, surface structures are iteratively generated and 3D printed at 1:10 model scale. They originate from different fabrication typologies and are designed to have acoustic diffusion and absorption effects. An automated robotic process measures the impulse responses of these surfaces by positioning a microphone and a speaker at multiple locations. The collected data serves two purposes: first, as an exploratory catalogue of different spatio-temporal-acoustic scenarios and second, as data set for predicting the acoustic response of digitally designed surface geometries using machine learning. In this paper, we present the automated data acquisition setup, the data processing and the computational generation of diffusive surface structures. We describe first results of comparative studies of measured surface panels and conclude with steps of future research.

Abstract:Standardized methods for measuring sound absorption such as the impedance tube and reverberation chamber methods are limited to normal or diffuse incidence, respectively. Two research axes have been generally followed in the literature to develop alternative techniques, the first one focusing on the measurement part, that is from the two-microphone technique to the use of microphone arrays or pressure-velocity sensors. The second axis focuses on the excitation part with for instance the use of sound field synthesis techniques. Since acoustic impedance and sound absorption coefficient of materials are classically defined under normal and oblique plane wave excitation, synthesizing an "ideal" plane wave using a loudspeaker array would allow measuring these acoustics quantities using a simple microphone pair. In this article, the effect of the different parameters of a loudspeaker array on acoustic plane waves reproduction on a material's surface is first numerically studied. Then, numerical and experimental results for the estimation of both impedance and absorption coefficients are reported. These results show that sound field synthesis allows to characterize a material for arbitrary incidence angles over a wide frequency range, thus offering an alternative method to standard techniques and an improvement over existing works.

Abstract:Acoustics is a classical field of study that has witnessed tremendous developments over the past 25 years. Driven by the novel acoustic effects underpinned by phononic crystals with periodic modulation of elastic building blocks in wavelength scale and acoustic metamaterials with localized resonant units in subwavelength scale, researchers in diverse disciplines of physics, mathematics, and engineering have pushed the boundary of possibilities beyond those long held as unbreakable limits. More recently, structure designs guided by the physics of graphene and topological electronic states of matter have further broadened the whole field of acoustic metamaterials by phenomena that reproduce the quantum effects classically. Use of active energy-gain components, directed by the parity-time reversal symmetry principle, has led to some previously unexpected wave characteristics. It is the intention of this review to trace historically these exciting developments, substantiated by brief accounts of the salient milestones. The latter can include, but are not limited to, zero/negative refraction, subwavelength imaging, sound cloaking, total sound absorption, metasurface and phase engineering, Dirac physics and topology-inspired acoustic engineering, non-Hermitian parity-time synthetic active metamaterials, and one-way propagation of sound waves. These developments may underpin the next generation of acoustic materials and devices, and offer new methods for sound manipulation, leading to exciting applications in noise reduction, imaging, sensing and navigation, as well as communications.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a fractal (self-similar) model of acoustic propagation in a porous material with a rigid structure. The fractal medium is modeled as a continuous medium of non-integer spatial dimension. The basic equations of acoustics in a fractal porous material are written. In this model, the fluid space is considered as fractal while the solid matrix is non-fractal. The fluid–structure interactions are described by fractional operators in the time domain. The resulting propagation equation contains fractional derivative terms and space-dependent coefficients. The fractional wave equation is solved analytically in the time domain, and the reflection and transmission operators are calculated for a slab of fractal porous material. Expressions for the responses of the fractal porous medium (reflection and transmission) to an acoustic excitation show that it is possible to deduce these responses from those obtained for a non-fractal porous medium, only by replacing the thickness of the non-fractal material by an effective thickness depending on the fractal dimension of the material. This result shows us that, thanks to the fractal dimension, we can increase (sometimes by a ratio of 50) and decrease the equivalent thickness of the fractal material. The wavefront speed of the fractal porous material depends on the fractal dimension and admits several supersonic values. These results open a scientific challenge for the creation of new acoustic fractal materials, such as metamaterials with very specific acoustic properties.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to describe a rich set of acoustic transmission loss observations that were completed in a coastal environment. The data library, enumerated in detail and publicly posted, is comprised of pitch-catch acoustic transmission loss measurements along with concurrent high spatial resolution meteorological observations. The meteorological parameters include near-surface temperature profiles, vertical wind speed profiles in the acoustic propagation direction, and significant wave height estimates. The acoustic source is positioned on an anchored vessel such that the first several hundred meters of the acoustic range is over open water with one microphone array positioned at the shore. A second microphone array is placed several hundred meters inland along the same source-to-receiver heading. The path between the two acoustic arrays is uniform salt marsh vegetation. Observations were made during seven sessions, which represent a variety of atmospheric conditions. That variety of conditions allows for some experimental generalizations about transmission loss as a function of meteorological observations. These include (1) the relationship between vertical effective sound speed profile and transmission loss, and (2) the variability of acoustic pressure with turbulence over time and elevation.

Abstract:This broad review summarizes recent advances and "hot" research topics in nanophononics and elastic, acoustic, and mechanical metamaterials based on results presented by the authors at the EUROMECH 610 Colloquium held on April 25–27, 2022 in Benicássim, Spain. The key goal of the colloquium was to highlight important developments in these areas, particularly new results that emerged during the last two years. This work thus presents a "snapshot" of the state-of-the-art of different nanophononics- and metamaterial-related topics rather than a historical view on these subjects, in contrast to a conventional review article. The introduction of basic definitions for each topic is followed by an outline of design strategies for the media under consideration, recently developed analysis and implementation techniques, and discussions of current challenges and promising applications. This review, while not comprehensive, will be helpful especially for early-career researchers, among others, as it offers a broad view of the current state-of-the-art and highlights some unique and flourishing research in the mentioned fields, providing insight into multiple exciting research directions.
