Abstract:Non-destructive testing using acoustic waves has emerged as a potential high-impact technology for improving the safety of elastic structures and reducing life-cycle costs. Although this technology has seen a number of signiﬁcant developments, normal operational conditions, such as applied stresses, may hamper its reliability in terms of defects detection. In this context, the nonlinear interactions between the mechanical stress in the materials and the acoustic waves have been studied over the years. The influence of applied stress on acoustic wave propagation is commonly termed acoustoelasticity. It is worth noting that the acoustoelastic effect property is deeply related to the acoustic modes propagation, direction of waves propagation and the material nonlinearity. Thus, understanding the acoustoelastic phenomena may be crucial to fully exploit the benefits of the non-destructive technology. For instance, since damage and applied stress cause changes on wave phase velocity, the damage-induced change should be distinguished from the stress-induced change. Meanwhile, well understanding stress-induced changes can yield the opportunities of stress measurement. To the best of the author's knowledge, there is no review on the subject of acoustoelastic effects. This paper reviews most of the corresponding studies published in recent years, with an emphasis on non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring applications. The main objective of this review paper is to collate the research performed in the area of acoustoelastic effects during the last 23 years, thereby giving a broad perspective on the state of the art in this research field. Moreover, some disputed and obscure understandings of the acoustoelastic effects are discussed, and the relationship between the initial stress and the material symmetry is examined.

Abstract:Physiological acoustics is a very hot topic in modern acoustic research, which is to study the hearing mechanism and the utterance of both humans and animals. It could be divided into two main aspects: physical acoustics of the ear and physiological acoustics. In physiological acoustics, there are some common research methods, such as objective experimental testing, subjective feelings evaluation survey statistical method, building the physical acoustic model and numerical simulation methods, etc. The authors are researching the accurate mathematical model of equal loudness curves, critical band and masking effects, by applying the holographic concept with several biological factors which are required to build a standard model. The cochlear emission information should be extracted from wavelet analysis method and two hearing protection technologies are being developed by band shielding.

Abstract:Acoustics in the 1850s combined listening, observation and notation. This was “real-time”, catching any phenomenon as it appeared. If it was repeatable, one could prepare for it. Continuous data rather than observation data enabled a very different analysis from observation and notebooks. Édouard-Léon Scott’s invention of the phonautograph enabled this. A surface moved below a stylus that was vibrated by sound in air. Originally a blackened glass plate, the scientific instrument maker Rudolph Koenig contributed by devising a very long axis representing time, because now blackened paper was wrapped around a cylinder on a threaded shaft. A twodimensional representation of the individual vibrations was obtained. Scott both deposited a sealed letter with the Paris Academy of Sciences in January, 1857 and filed a patent application in April, 1857. Later he deposited a further sealed letter and in 1859 he filed an application for patent of addition. Following the thoughts expressed and documented in his manuscripts here analyzed in context and comparing with Koenig’s production it is feasible to see how they were dependent on each other, although they had different purposes in mind. The paper concentrates on Scott’s interests in performance, and a number of original tracings are discussed.

Abstract:Acoustics is a classical field of study that has witnessed tremendous developments over the past 25 years. Driven by the novel acoustic effects underpinned by phononic crystals with periodic modulation of elastic building blocks in wavelength scale and acoustic metamaterials with localized resonant units in subwavelength scale, researchers in diverse disciplines of physics, mathematics, and engineering have pushed the boundary of possibilities beyond those long held as unbreakable limits. More recently, structure designs guided by the physics of graphene and topological electronic states of matter have further broadened the whole field of acoustic metamaterials by phenomena that reproduce the quantum effects classically. Use of active energy-gain components, directed by the parity-time reversal symmetry principle, has led to some previously unexpected wave characteristics. It is the intention of this review to trace historically these exciting developments, substantiated by brief accounts of the salient milestones. The latter can include, but are not limited to, zero/negative refraction, subwavelength imaging, sound cloaking, total sound absorption, metasurface and phase engineering, Dirac physics and topology-inspired acoustic engineering, non-Hermitian parity-time synthetic active metamaterials, and one-way propagation of sound waves. These developments may underpin the next generation of acoustic materials and devices, and offer new methods for sound manipulation, leading to exciting applications in noise reduction, imaging, sensing and navigation, as well as communications.

Abstract:It's often difficult for the general public and young people to grasp the importance of acoustics in everyday life and its many branches and fields of application. However, it's equally complex for people working or studying acoustics to communicate to this audience while avoiding the same focus on detail as scientific publications. Science communication skills are seldom taught, and multi-disciplinary approaches are little used. This paper describes the work carried out as part of the ‘Fantastique acoustique—Fantastics acoustics' project, which aims to raise awareness of the acoustics-related research at four Québec universities and train students in science communication. Eight student teams were partnered with cartoonists to produce 3-page comic strips and an associated corpus (including references and videos). The steps involved in producing the magazine are described, as are some of the final works. In particular, a survey including the students and the artists identifies the main positive points and the most significant challenges of such a partnership.

Abstract:Semi-anechoic rooms are used for the acoustic characterisation of noise sources. They involve heavy infrastructures and thick absorbent lining. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a less expensive alternative by complementing a thin passive coating with an active technology. Previous work has achieved the active reduction of the pressure scattered by the reflective wall of a semi-anechoic room, in the 80–200 Hz frequency band. This work validated an innovative approach allowing to control the scattered pressure throughout the measurement volume, using a setup located over its periphery. This paper extends a previous presentation at Forum Acusticum dealing with the active control of the low-frequency reflections on the walls and ceiling of a semi-anechoic room [Pinhède et al., Forum Acusticum 2023, Torino, Italy, 11–15 September, 2023, https://doi.org/10.61782/fa.2023.0399]. We describe the design principles and the 2D semi-analytical and 3D finite element simulations of the control system that help optimise parameters such as the transducers number and locations. A full-scale demonstrator has been built to validate the control strategy. Acoustics measurements, which have been used to characterise the room acoustics and to update the simulation parameters are also presented and compared to an updated numerical model.

Abstract:The Department of Music Technology and Acoustics of the Hellenic Mediterranean University offers a unique higher education program in Greece, addressing the growing demand for specialists in music technology, sound technology, and acoustics. It aims to educate specialized professionals in the rapidly advancing scientific fields of music technology and acoustics, mainly driven by the swift progress in electronic technology. The Department aims to address a gap in the professional market by producing highly skilled graduates, capable not only of keeping up with the latest scientific and technological developments but also of leading the way by introducing innovative approaches and methods. The Department combines art, science, and technology, focusing on sound recording, analysis, synthesis, and music production. Music technology encompasses various cutting-edge fields such as network music performance, artificial intelligence in music, and music embodiment. Acoustics refers to fundamental aspects of sound as well as its generation, transmission, and related phenomena. It includes research fields such as physical acoustics, optoacoustics, and vibroacoustics. This overview presents the research activities, methodologies, and results. A discussion of future research works and pointers to future technological evolution towards real-world music and acoustics applications is also provided.

Abstract:The focus of the building industry and research is shifting from delivering satisfactory spaces to going beyond what is merely acceptable with a wave of new research and practice dedicated to exploring how the built environment can support task performance and enhance people’s health and well-being. The present study addresses the role of acoustics in this paradigm shift. Indoor soundscape research has recently emerged as an approach that brings a perceptual perspective on building and room acoustics in order to shape built environments that “sound good” according to building occupants’ preference and needs. This paper establishes an initial discussion over some of the open questions in this field of research that is still in an embryonic stage. A thematic analysis of structured interviews with a panel of experts offered a range of perspectives on the characterization, management, and design of indoor soundscapes and health-related outcomes. The discussion pointed out the importance of both perceptual and multisensory research and integrated participatory design practices to enable a holistic view regarding the complex building–user interrelations and the design of just cities. Soundscape methodologies tailored to the peculiarities of indoor soundscapes can help to measure and predict the human perceptual response to the acoustic stimuli in context, thus reducing the risk of mismatches between expected and real building experiences. This perceptual perspective is expected to widen the scientific evidence for the negative and positive impacts of the acoustic environment on human health, well-being, and quality of life. This will support prioritizing the role of acoustics in building design and challenge many current design practices that are based on a noise control approach.

On the relevance of acoustic measurements for creating realistic virtual acoustic environments

Abstract:Geometrical approaches for room acoustics simulation have the advantage of requiring limited computational resources while still achieving a high perceptual plausibility. A common approach is using the image source model for direct and early reflections in connection with further simplified models such as a feedback delay network for the diffuse reverberant tail. When recreating real spaces as virtual acoustic environments using room acoustics simulation, the perceptual relevance of individual parameters in the simulation is unclear. Here we investigate the importance of underlying acoustical measurements and technical evaluation methods to obtain high-quality room acoustics simulations in agreement with dummy-head recordings of a real space. We focus on the role of source directivity. The effect of including measured, modelled, and omnidirectional source directivity in room acoustics simulations was assessed in comparison to the measured reference. Technical evaluation strategies to verify and improve the accuracy of various elements in the simulation processing chain from source, the room properties, to the receiver are presented. Perceptual results from an ABX listening experiment with random speech tokens are shown and compared with technical measures for a ranking of simulation approaches.

A data acquisition setup for data driven acoustic design

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel interdisciplinary approach to study the relationship between diffusive surface structures and their acoustic performance. Using computational design, surface structures are iteratively generated and 3D printed at 1:10 model scale. They originate from different fabrication typologies and are designed to have acoustic diffusion and absorption effects. An automated robotic process measures the impulse responses of these surfaces by positioning a microphone and a speaker at multiple locations. The collected data serves two purposes: first, as an exploratory catalogue of different spatio-temporal-acoustic scenarios and second, as data set for predicting the acoustic response of digitally designed surface geometries using machine learning. In this paper, we present the automated data acquisition setup, the data processing and the computational generation of diffusive surface structures. We describe first results of comparative studies of measured surface panels and conclude with steps of future research.
Experimental characterization of littoral atmospheric acoustics: Concurrent meteorological and acoustic observations

Abstract:The aim of this work is to describe a rich set of acoustic transmission loss observations that were completed in a coastal environment. The data library, enumerated in detail and publicly posted, is comprised of pitch-catch acoustic transmission loss measurements along with concurrent high spatial resolution meteorological observations. The meteorological parameters include near-surface temperature profiles, vertical wind speed profiles in the acoustic propagation direction, and significant wave height estimates. The acoustic source is positioned on an anchored vessel such that the first several hundred meters of the acoustic range is over open water with one microphone array positioned at the shore. A second microphone array is placed several hundred meters inland along the same source-to-receiver heading. The path between the two acoustic arrays is uniform salt marsh vegetation. Observations were made during seven sessions, which represent a variety of atmospheric conditions. That variety of conditions allows for some experimental generalizations about transmission loss as a function of meteorological observations. These include (1) the relationship between vertical effective sound speed profile and transmission loss, and (2) the variability of acoustic pressure with turbulence over time and elevation.
