Abstract:For the current field of underwater acoustic stealth, the passive methods such as acoustic absorption materials are extensively used. However, the performance of such passive stealth method is seriously degraded at low frequencies. Therefore, active stealth methods, which control underwater sound field by actively transmitting sound signals using secondary sources, have attracted increasing attention. The paper focuses on the control of target scattering field and a method for underwater sound field control is presented. Simulation is performed using finite-element method and proves that the proposed method is effective to directionally control the scattering field of a steel shell. Finally, an experiment was conducted in an anechoic tank. The experimental results show that the proposed method can greatly weaken the specified directions of the scattering field of the steel shell.

Abstract:Due to the energy conservation law, traditional active noise control system cannot realize the suppression of omnidirectional sound field and will bring fluctuation effect in the far field. This paper presents a method of sound field control using beam deflection to overcome the shortcomings of traditional active noise control system. The principle of beam deflection is firstly derived based on the principle of beam forming. Two methods including conventional beam deflection and optimal beam deflection are proposed. Then technical route of the sound field control using beam deflection is given. Finally, simulations are performed and the results show that proposed method can effectively suppress the energy of a controlled sound source in the predetermined direction.
Simulation and Experimental Demonstration of Sound Field Control Using Beam Deflection

Abstract:The acoustic absorption materials are mostly used for underwater stealth. However, the effect of such materials decreases in low-frequency band. Therefore, a method of sound field control using beam deflection was proposed, which is a kind of active noise control technology. The principle of the algorithm is firstly used in underwater stealth. This paper focused on the simulation based on the finite-element method and an experiment to verify the conventional beam deflection algorithm. The simulation based on the finite-element method are performed and the results show that the conventional beam deflection can effectively realize sound field directional weakening. Finally, an experiment is carried out in a muffler pool. The experiment data show that the energy at the predetermined control direction is reduced by more than 14dB. The experiment data of different frequencies, different distances and different control angles verified that the conventional beam deflection achieved stable sound field directional weakening effect.
Active Structures Integrated with Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks: a Bio-Inspired Control Framework

Abstract:One of the main problems in controlling the shape of active structures (AS) is to determine the actuations that drive the structure from the current state to the target state. Model-based methods such as stochastic search require a known type of load and relatively long computational time, which limits the practical use of AS in civil engineering. Moreover, additive errors may be produced because of the discrepancy between analytic models and real structures. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents a compound system called WAS, which combines AS with a wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN). A bio-inspired control framework imitating the activity of the nervous systems of animals is proposed for WAS. A typical example is tested for verification. In the example, a triangular tensegrity prism that aims to maintain its original height is integrated with a WSAN that consists of a central controller, three actuators, and three sensors. The result demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed concept and control framework in cases of unknown loads that include different types, distributions, magnitudes, and directions. The proposed control framework can also act as a supplementary means to improve the efficiency and accuracy of control frameworks based on a common stochastic search.
Research on force control theory of adaptive beam sting structure

Abstract:An adaptive beam string structure was a form of an intelligent structure, which can control the working status by adjusting the prestress of the structure according to the changes of external loads. Firstly, the working mechanism of the structure was analyzed. Next, the equations of structural force status were established.And then the force control problem of slack of the lower chord cable caused by the negative air pressure was analyzed, and the corresponding control model was built. Furthermore, the force control problem of the inhomogeneous internal force of an upper chord beam caused by moving loads was analyzed, while the load space was divided into controllable regions with a time lag or not according to the magnitude and the moving velocity of moving loads. The control model of each controllable region was built respectively for optimising structural force status. Finally, a numerical example was conducted to verify the working performance of the structure. Numerical results demonstrate that: in the comparison with a normal beam string structure, an adaptive beam string structure can reduce the peak force and initial prestress level as well as improve bearing capacity by adaptive control.

Abstract:The manipulation of an acoustic field has attracted immense interest due to its practical significance in various fields, including medicine, communication, military and industrial detection. However, simple yet precise manipulation of the acoustic fields remains challenging, limited by the inherent properties of acoustic waves and natural materials, resulting in several long-standing problems in acoustics. Artificially engineered structures provide acoustic properties unattainable in the nature, opening up the possibility of breaking through these fundamental limitations and realizing fascinating sound manipulation functionalities. In this paper, based on the basic concepts of phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials/metasurfaces, we systematically review the research progress in the acoustic field manipulation with artificial structures, including acoustic one-way transmission, generation/decoding of acoustic orbital angular momentum, acoustic cloaking and coalescence of acoustic artificial structures and machine learning. Then, a brief introduction is provided regarding the potential of acoustic metamaterials in several applications, such as high-capacity/ high-speed acoustic communication, acoustic diffuser, and low-frequency sound absorption/insulation, fully representing the effectiveness and flexibility of the manual manipulation of the acoustic field. Finally, we discuss the future directions in this emerging research field.

Abstract:String instruments, like the violin, have been studied for the past 350 years. These studies have focused on the quality of the wood, dynamic characteristics of these instruments and structural acoustics and psychoacoustics. The emphasis of the previous research was to understand the secrets of great designers of these instruments. For example, one would like to explain reasons for the legendary quality of the sound radiated by a Stradivarius and the price that it commands today. Many researchers have also suggested passive techniques to improve the quality of these musical instruments. However, no attempts have been made to use active structural control and smart structures to modify the quality of the music radiated by these instruments like the violin. In this paper, we start with the assumption that the legendary quality of the sound radiated by a Stradivarius is due to its special structural dynamic or structural-acoustics characteristics. Our approach is to use the concepts of adaptive or smart structures and active structural control to improve the quality of the sound radiated by these musical instruments. Procedures are developed to change the structural dynamic characteristics, actively, to replicate the structural dynamic characteristics of musical instruments developed by great masters.

Theory and Scheme of Active Control on Structural Interior Noise

Abstract:The rectangular plate cavity system is selected as research model in this paper. The mechanism of transmission noise given off by vibrating plate stimulated by outside sound source is discussed. Then piezoelectric plate (PZT) is selected as actuator, ultimatum of active control on structural interior noise is another focus. On the basis of these theories, three control schemes are analyzed and compared, then the best scheme is confirmed.

Abstract:Most existing active structural control methods do not consider the structure uncertainties.To deal with this problem,a feasible active control method is presented based on control theory focusing on the AMD(active mass damper) benchmark test structure system.The feedback interconnection in AMD control system is designed based on the control- oriented mathematical model which is obtained by system identification.The process of weighting-function selection and the controller design method are also given.Finally,the experimental results show the effectiveness and robustness of the controller.

Abstract:Without consideration of acoustic-structural coupled factors in conventional modal analysis method for the control of vehicle interior noise generated by vibration of vehicle body, this paper presents acoustic-structural coupled modal analysis method to investigate control algorithm of vehicle interior noise. Using this method, both vehicle body structures and interior sound field could be synthetically analyzed. On the basis of the theory on acoustic-structural coupled modal analysis, emphases are put on discussion of realization of acoustic-structural coupled modal analysis method in vehicle interior noise control. The experimental results demonstrate that the method of acoustic-structural coupled modal analysis is feasible and effective in vehicle interior noise control.

Abstract:A new active control method was proposed, in which the analytical control law was deduced by using a step by step integral method to differential equation of motion under the condition of static error being zero. This control law is terse in mathematical expression and convenient for practical use. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide much more remarkable peak response reduction of seismically excited structures than the classical LQR method.

Abstract:Much of structural control research and applications in civil engineering have been concerned with structures equipped with passive, hybrid, or active control devices in order to enhance structural performance under extraordinary loads. In most cases, the structure and the control system are individually designed and optimized. On the other hand, an exciting consequence of structural control research is that it also opens the door to new possibilities in structural forms and configurations, such as lighter buildings or bridges with longer spans without compromising on structural performance. Moreover, this can only be achieved through integrated design of structures with control elements as an integral part. This paper addresses the integrated design of structures with imbedded control systems and devices. Simultaneous optimization of such controlled structures is considered, showing that new structural forms and configurations can be achieved through integrated design.

Abstract:The newly generated artificial structures, including phononic crystals, elastic metamaterials, acoustic black holes (ABHs) and elastic metasurfaces, can abnormally control wave propagations. In this paper, focusing on plate structures and from the perspective of the suppression of vibration and especially sound radiation by manipulating flexural waves, we give a thorough review of the advances of above-mentioned artificial structures, involving their extraordinary characteristics, corresponding mechanisms of vibration and sound radiation suppression, design methods of phase-gradient elastic metasurfaces, and some representative works on suppressing vibration and sound radiation of plates by flexural wave manipulations. Additionally, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of these artificial structures in vibration and sound radiation suppression. Finally, we look forward to the prospects on vibration and sound radiation suppression of plates based on wave manipulations. This paper will provide a timely and practical assistance to academic and technical researchers in the field of vibration and noise reduction.

Abstract:Acoustic metasurfaces, as two-dimensional acoustic metamaterials, are a current research topic for their sub-wavelength thickness and excellent acoustic wave manipulation. They hold significant promise in noise reduction and isolation, cloaking, camouflage, acoustic imaging, and focusing. Resonant structural units are utilized to construct acoustic metasurfaces with the unique advantage of controlling large wavelengths within a small size. In this paper, the recent research progresses of the resonant metasurfaces are reviewed, covering the design mechanisms and advances of structural units, the classification and application of the resonant metasurfaces, and the tunable metasurfaces. Finally, research interest in this field is predicted in future.
