Abstract:The acoustic absorption materials are mostly used for underwater stealth. However, the effect of such materials decreases in low-frequency band. Therefore, a method of sound field control using beam deflection was proposed, which is a kind of active noise control technology. The principle of the algorithm is firstly used in underwater stealth. This paper focused on the simulation based on the finite-element method and an experiment to verify the conventional beam deflection algorithm. The simulation based on the finite-element method are performed and the results show that the conventional beam deflection can effectively realize sound field directional weakening. Finally, an experiment is carried out in a muffler pool. The experiment data show that the energy at the predetermined control direction is reduced by more than 14dB. The experiment data of different frequencies, different distances and different control angles verified that the conventional beam deflection achieved stable sound field directional weakening effect.

Abstract:By using the derived exact solution of the acoustically induced unsteady potential flow of a two-dimensional thin airfoil, the mechanism of flutter-suppression by active acoustic excitation, known as an extremely weak flow perturbation, was analyzed, the parametric effect of sound source on the flutter boundary was discussed, and through the theoretical calculation of the coupled acoustic-vortex, the experimental results obtained from the wind-tunnel testing were explained. The results show that in the acoustic flutter suppression process, there are certain relationships among the parameters of the closed-loop system, and the optimal parameter must be chosen reasonably. The present investigation provides a theoretical foundation for the active acoustic control techniques applied in the aerodynamic areas.
Flutter active suppression of two-dimensional airfoil based on H∞ controller and μ controller

Abstract:Aiming at the flutter active suppression of two-dimensional airfoil,the control law of flutter active suppression and the wind tunnel experimental verification were researched.First,the airfoil's equation of motion state was established based on Theodorsen unsteady aerodynamic theory.Then,the H∞ controller and the μ controller were designed based on the robust control theory and constituted the airfoil flutter active control system with pneumatic elastic system of two-dimensional airfoil.Finally,the control effect of H∞ controller and μ controller was verified by numerical simulations and wind tunnel experiments.The results indicate that both H∞ controller and μ controller can make the flutter speed of two-dimensional airfoil increase from 15.45 m/s to 27 m/s.Besides,the μ controller has shorter flutter active suppression convergence time and higher flutter active suppression wind speed,so the μ controller has better robust stability and robust performance.

Abstract:Reducing rotor aerodynamic noise is an important challenge in helicopter design. Active flap control (AFC) on rotors is an effective noise reduction method. It changes the segment airfoil shape, aerodynamic load distribution, and the wake path of the rotor flow by adding trailing edge flaps (TEFs). Although AFC noise reduction control is easily simulated, the relevant experiments have not been widely conducted due to test technical problems and limited financial support. The acoustic characteristics of the AFC-equipped rotor, such as the placement of TEFs for noise reduction and whether multiple winglets can provide a better effect than single winglets, have not been verified in previous experiments. In this work, an AFC-equipped rotor with two TEFs was designed, and its acoustic properties were tested in the FL-17 acoustic wind tunnel with microphone arrays in the far field. The results showed that the noise reduction effect of AFC was closely related to the control frequency and phase. Increasing the control phase could move the reduction region toward the azimuth-decreasing region for far-field noise. The noise reduction in a single outboard TEF was better than that in a single inboard TEF, while the dual-TEF model performed better. In this experiment, the average noise reduction in the observation point at the lower front of the rotor could be more than 3 dB, and the maximum noise reduction could be 6.2 dB.

Abstract:Dragonfly wings have excellent aerodynamic performance and damping capacity, which is driving people's attention. The existing researches on it are mainly from the vein structure and focusing on the static performance demonstration of dragonfly wings. Flutter analysis is very important during the process of aircraft design. With the inspiration of internal flow of dragonfly wings, the Coriolis force on the pipe wall while vibrating is discussed. By establishing a two-dimensional wing model, using quasi- steady aerodynamic equation, the aerodynamic force and the Coriolis force generated while fluttering were calculated. Theoretical calculation and numerical method are used to find critical velocity with and without internal flow. Coriolis force is proved effective on reducing two- dimensional wing flutter.

Abstract:Due to the maneuver and overload requirements of aircraft, it is inevitable that supersonic fins experience high angles of attack (AOAs) and viscous effects at high altitudes. The local piston theory with viscous correction (VLPT) is introduced and modified to account for the 3-dimensional effect. With the contribution of the explicit aerodynamic force expression and enhanced surface spline interpolation, a tightly coupled state-space equation of the aeroelastic system is derived, and a flutter analysis scheme of relatively small computational complexity and high precision is established with a mode tracking algorithm. A wind tunnel test conducted on a supersonic fin confirms the validity of our approach. Notably, the VLPT predicts a more accurate flutter boundary than the local piston theory (LPT), particularly regarding the decreasing trend in flutter speed as AOA increases. This is attributed to the VLPT's ability to provide a richer and more detailed steady flow field. Specifically, as the AOA increases, the spanwise flow evolves into a gradually pronounced spanwise vortex, yielding an additional downwash and energizing the boundary layer, which is not captured by LPT. This indicates that the precision of LPT/VLPT significantly depends on the accuracy of steady flow results.

Abstract:An active control technique called servo delayed feedback control is proposed to control the flutter of supersonic aircraft wing. It's motivated to increase the critical flow velocity. Firstly, the servo delayed feedback control is designed based on a two-dimensional airfoil so that delayed differential equations are modelled for the controlled system under consideration. Then, the stability of the system without time delay and with time delayed feedback control are considered analytically and flutter boundary of the parameters in the delayed feedback control system is predicted when time delay varies. Finally, numerical simulation for time domain with MATLAB/SIMULINK software is made to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical result. The results show that, critical flow velocity can be increased by regulating the quantity of time delay and the provided strategy of delayed feedback to control the flutter in supersonic aircraft wing system is not only valid but also easily applied to engineering structures.

Abstract:The active aeroelastic flutter characteristics of supersonic beams are investigated. The main contribution of this research is that the piezoelectric material is used to increase the flutter velocities of the supersonic beams. A modeling approach based on the conventional theory of structural dynamics is employed. The process of deriving equations is not complicated and easy to understand. This methodology is verified to be accurate and effective. Hamilton's principle with the assumed mode method is used to develop the equation of motion of the structural systems. The supersonic piston theory is adopted to evaluate the aerodynamic pressure. Using the standard eigenvalue methodology, the solutions for complex eigenvalue problem are obtained. A displacement and acceleration feedback control strategy is used to obtain the active stiffness and active mass. The aeroelastic flutter bounds are obtained by calculating the natural frequencies and damping ratios. The effects of the active stiffness and mass on the flutter properties of the supersonic beams are analyzed. From the numerical results, it is seen that by adding the active stiffness and mass to the supersonic beams, the aeroelastic flutter properties can be effectively improved. Especially, if the acceleration and displacement feedback gains are increased to proper values, the flutter can even be eliminated for the supersonic cantilevered beams.

Abstract:The flutter, post-flutter and active control of a two-dimensional airfoil with control surface operating in supersonic/hypersonic flight speed regions are investigated in this paper. A three-degree-of-freedom dynamic model is established, in which both the cubic nonlinear structural stiffness and the nonlinear aerodynamic load are accounted for. The third order Piston Theory is employed to derive the aerodynamic loads in the supersonic/hypersonic airflow. Nonlinear flutter happens with a phenomenon of limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) when the flight speed is less than or greater than linear critical speed. The LQR approach is employed to design a control law to increase both the linear and nonlinear critical speeds of aerodynamic flutter, and then a combined control law is proposed in order to reduce the amplitude of LCOs by adding a cubic nonlinear feedback control. The dynamic responses of the controlled system are given and used to compare with those of the uncontrolled system. Results of simulation show that the active flutter control method proposed here is effective.

Abstract:This paper experimentally investigated characteristics of low-frequency pressure fluctuations in a large-scale open jet wind tunnel using pressure transducers and far-field microphones. Two distinct low-frequency pressure fluctuations have been detected at the range of wind speeds between 50 m/s and 75 m/s. The two peak frequencies vary with the change of wind speed. Analysis results show that both the low-frequency pressure fluctuations are driven by the resonances of the large scale instability waves in the jet shear layer at two different feedback loop paths. One loop is through the entire circuit of the wind tunnel, another exists between the nozzle and the collector, which is termed as edge-tone feedback. A formula for predicting the peak frequency was derived and the prediction agrees well with the measurement. In addition, an effective control strategy to suppress the wind tunnel circuit resonance and the edge-tone feedback resonance were also presented.

Abstract:The presented experimental results illustrate the recent advances in the reduction of multifrequency vibrations of helicopter fuselage using an active control of structural response system. Recently, to cancel the multifrequency helicopter vibrations, a hybrid control approach has been proposed combining the filtered-x least mean square algorithm with a discrete model predictive sliding mode controller. To verify its effectiveness and self-adaptability, a set of active control experiments of structural response are conducted on a free–free elastic beam, which simulates a helicopter in flight. Considering that the helicopter vibrations in practical applications are much more complex, the further experiments of real-time active control are performed using a model helicopter test system. Higher discrete frequency components, which are actually of concern, are selected as the control objectives during the tests. The algorithm’s control effects are sufficiently checked by single-input single-output and multiple-input multiple-output tests under different excitation conditions. For many cases the attenuation of measured response exceed level of 20 dB, with maximum reduction reaching 34.1 dB. These two sets of tests confirm that the active control system is practical for canceling the multifrequency helicopter vibrations.

Abstract:The aeroservoelastic model consists of a constant-chord wing model mounted on a moving platform and elastically suspended both in plunge and pitch motion in order to thus reproduce the conditions of a typical deformable aircraft wing. The model represents basically a coupled two-degree of freedom dynamical system. The system parameters were chosen such that the model would be capable of exhibiting sustained self-inducted oscillations - flutter, at relatively moderate air speed and reduced frequencies. In purpose to control this model, a simple electrically driven trailing-edge flap was added over the entire wing span. For the specific problem of the active flutter suppression, the flap should be included in a command line through a feedback connection. For the flutter as well as for the much more complex problem of flutter suppression, the representation of the aerodynamic forces is a very important aspect. The active control of nonlinear aeroelastic instability, such as active flutter suppression, is becoming a promising and attractive technology, because it can simultaneously reduce the weight and increase the performances of the modern aircrafts. Flutter is one of the most representative topics of aeroelasticity. Active suppression of aeroelastic instabilities, such as flutter, divergence, and control reversal, will lead to improved performances.

Abstract:Flow around a bluff body near a solid wall, such as a circular or rectangular cylinder placed in a uniform flow near a solid boundary, is of fundamental importance. The reduction in the aerodynamic sound is a very important issue, for example, flow induced noise in tall buildings, bridges, high-speed trains, windmills, and computer cooling fans. This type of problem has been addressed extensively both experimentally and theoretically in the past. The flow past a long rectangular cylinder is usually associated with vortex shedding, which can be affected strongly by the presence of a nearby wall. Flow past a solid body induces vortices and the vortex acceleration will cause sound. In the present study, the aerodynamic sound generated by flow past a rectangular cylinder of various configurations was investigated experimentally in a low-speed quiet wind tunnel. A numerical study using large scale eddy Simulation technique has also been conducted to compute the sound generation due to vortex shedding. Abstract:Hydrofoils are widely applied in the maritime domain, and their vibrational characteristics significantly influence the genesis and evolution of vortices. Consequently, modulating vortex shedding through the active vibration of hydrofoils may lead to the enhancement of the hydrodynamic performance of bluff bodies. In order to study the influence of structural oscillations on vortex shedding, both Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wake oscillator models were used to simulate the modulations of vortex shedding caused by an actively oscillating hydrofoil. By altering the vibration frequency and amplitude, the shedding frequency of vortices can be locked onto the structural vibration frequency. Another important discovery is that the dominant frequency of noise at the trailing edge of the actively vibrated hydrofoil has significantly shifted. Alongside the shift, there is a marked reduction in noise amplitude, denoting a dual acoustical modulation stemming from the vibratory intervention. These advancements provide pivotal contributions to the understanding of fluid-structure interactions and their resultant acoustic phenomena.
Noise Control for High-Lift Devices by Slat Wall Treatment

Abstract:A novel wall treatment method, termed as the Slat Cove Wavy Wall (SCWW), is proposed to improve both the aero-acoustic and the aerodynamic performances of high-lift devices. By this treatment, a wavy pattern is imposed on the wall in the slat cove. In the present work, slats with three different SCWWs are designed and applied to a straight wing composed by 30P30N airfoil. Numerical simulations and analyses are conducted to unveil the underlying mechanisms of noise reduction. The unsteady flow field and the far-field noise are predicted by a hybrid SA-IDDES method followed by the integration of the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation. The modified high-lift device is proved to be able to improve the aero-acoustic performance by reducing the low-frequency components of the radiated noise. Meanwhile, the aerodynamic performance is maintained or improved under proper design parameters. The boundary layer separation in the slat cove is accelerated by the SCWW, which transforms low-frequency periodic vortex shedding to high-frequency turbulent flow. This results in the sound energy shift from low-frequency noise to high-frequency broadband noise. The SCWW method is proved to be effective in redistribution of boundary vorticity flux on the slat lower surface. To reveal the mechanism of the SCWW's drag and noise reduction, the vortex dynamic processes near the slat lower surface in terms of the Lamb vector divergence are further investigated. It is found that the Lamb vector divergence is directly related to both the noise source and the drag. The interaction area of positive and negative Lamb vector divergence can be balanced and decreased by SCWW, resulting in the drag and noise reduction. As expressed by the vortex dynamic processes, this feature implies the SCWW method is of great potential in noise attenuation.
Computational Fluid Dynamics-Based Transonic Flutter Suppression with Control Delay

Abstract:This work investigates the effects of control input time delay on closed-loop transonic computational aeroelastic analysis. Control input time delays are becoming critical as the demand for high frequency control actions is increasing. The flow in transonic conditions exhibits strong nonlinearities which require accurate physical modeling techniques, in turn resulting in large dimensional systems that are computationally costly to solve. A unified framework is demonstrated for the robust and efficient generation of reduced order models. Once generated, the reduced order model is employed for the flutter boundary search, and excellent agreement with the large order coupled model is demonstrated. The aero-servo-elastic reduced order model is then exploited to design a feedback control law, which is implemented in the fully coupled computational fluid/structural dynamics solver. As expected, the controller effectiveness is found to degrade for increasing time delay, up to a critical value where the controller fails to suppress flutter. It is shown that a controller for a time-delay system may be designed using the same aero-servo-elastic reduced order model, incurring in no extra costs or complications. The new controller is found to achieve excellent flutter suppression characteristics. The aero-servo-elastic reduced order model may also be used to identify, for a given feedback controller, the critical value of control input time delay at which the closed-loop aero-servo-elastic system loses its stability. The test cases are for a two-dimensional pitch-plunge aerofoil section and the AGARD 445.6 wing modified with a trailing-edge control surface.
Oscillatory Blowing Control Numerical Simulation of Airfoil Flutter by High-Accuracy Method

Abstract:It is known that oscillatory blowing can be used to delay flow separation and stall. The oscillatory blowing technique is applied to control of the airfoil's flutter. A high accuracy fluid-structure coupling numerical method is used. The numerical results show that the steady blowing will weaken the flutter. However, the excess blowing will decrease the lift coefficient. The best blowing velocity can be found by the present numerical method. The influence of the frequency of the oscillatory blowing on the airfoil's vibration is also studied. The numerical results show that the oscillatory blowing is more efficient than steady blowing.
The low frequency pressure pulsation and control of the open-jet wind tunnel

Abstract:An open jet wind tunnel has low-frequency pressure pulsation in common wind speed range due to its unique structural form, which seriously damages the quality of flow field in the test section. The low-frequency pressure fluctuation performance and control mechanism of Jilin University open jet and return flow wind tunnel are investigated by experiments and numerical simulation. The results show that the low-frequency pressure fluctuation is a narrow pulse phenomenon that only occurs in certain intervals, and several velocity intervals may be found in the same wind tunnel. The reliability of the numerical simulation is verified by comparing the peak frequency and amplitude of pressure fluctuation in numerical simulation and wind tunnel tests. A simplified model similar to and amplifying the phenomenon is established. The flow structure and vortex evolution are analyzed via detached eddy simulation. In the test section, large-scale shedding vortices are formed at the nozzle exit, introducing periodic pulsating instantaneous velocity and acting with the collector to form an edge-feedback. This acoustic feedback forms resonance with the pipeline circuit, resulting in poor flow field quality. In accordance with the mechanism of nozzle jet, two methods of controlling pulsation are proposed: spoiler and flow-follow device. The study shows that the effects of two methods are abrupt, and the frequency of pressure pulsation is changed. The spoiler destroys the complete structure of vortex ring in free jet and develops into a complementary double vortex ring structure, which is highly sensitive to size factors. The flow-follow device supplements the velocity loss of the free jet at the nozzle and develops into a double vortex ring with master-slave structure in the middle of the test section. Its vibration reduction effect is greatly affected by the flow velocity. It takes effect in an appropriate range where the flow velocity is higher than the nozzle velocity. If the follow velocity is extremely low, the flow-follow device cannot change the original jet structure. If the follow velocity is extremely high, the momentum of the fan will be greatly reduced, the flow field will be unstable, and another order of pulsation may be induced. This work lays a solid foundation for further understanding the aerodynamic characteristics and optimization mechanism of open jet wind tunnel.
