Abstract:Acoustic metasurfaces, as two-dimensional acoustic metamaterials, are a current research topic for their sub-wavelength thickness and excellent acoustic wave manipulation. They hold significant promise in noise reduction and isolation, cloaking, camouflage, acoustic imaging, and focusing. Resonant structural units are utilized to construct acoustic metasurfaces with the unique advantage of controlling large wavelengths within a small size. In this paper, the recent research progresses of the resonant metasurfaces are reviewed, covering the design mechanisms and advances of structural units, the classification and application of the resonant metasurfaces, and the tunable metasurfaces. Finally, research interest in this field is predicted in future.

Abstract:Acoustic metamaterials have opened up unprecedented possibilities for wave manipulation, and can be utilized to realize many novel and fascinating physical phenomena, such as acoustic self-collimation, cloaking, asymmetric transmission, and negative refraction. In this review, we explore the fundamental physics of acoustic metamaterials and introduce several exciting developments, including the realization of unconventional effective parameters, acoustic metasurface, total sound absorption, high-resolution imaging, parity-time-symmetric materials, and topological acoustics. Acoustic metamatetials with negative effective parameters that are not observed in nature expand acoustic properties of natural materials. Acoustic metasurfaces can exhibit wavefront-shaping capabilities, with thickness being much smaller than the wavelength. The precisely designed matematerials provide the new possibility of steering waves on a subwavelength scale, which can be used for acoustic high-resolution imaging beyond the diffraction limit. The metamaterial absorbers can achieve total sound absorption at low frequencies and exhibit broadband absorption spectrum. Moreover, structure designs guided by the topological physics further broaden the whole field of acoustic metamaterials. Phononic crystals have become aflexible platform for studying new physics and exotic phenomenarelated to topological phases. Finally, we conclude the developments of acoustic metamaterials, discuss the technical challenges, and introduce potential applications in this emerging field.

Abstract:Abstract Acoustic metamaterials (AMMs) and acoustic metasurfaces (AMSs) are artificially structured materials with unique properties not found in natural materials. We review herein the properties of AMMs and AMSs that have been designed using different kinds of meta-atoms or meta-molecules with local resonance. AMMs composed of meta-atoms display a transmission dip with a negative modulus or a negative mass density. AMMs composed of two kinds of meta-atoms present a transparent transmission, indicating that they simultaneously have a negative modulus and a negative mass density. Furthermore, meta-molecule AMMs also exhibit double-negative properties. Moreover, acoustic meta-atoms or meta-molecules can be used to fabricate acoustic topological metamaterials with topologically protected edge state propagation. These meta-atoms and meta-molecules can also attain phase discontinuity near the resonant frequency, and thus they can be used to design AMSs with anomalous manipulation for acoustic waves. The tunability of meta-molecules provides a feasible path to achieve broadband AMS.

Abstract:Despite the emergence of acoustic metamaterials with superior sound absorption and transmission loss, their adoption for building sound insulation has been limited. Sound insulation design in buildings is still informed by the acoustic performance of conventional materials, where the mass law contradicts light weighting when it comes to acoustic design. In any case buildings close to noisy environments such as motorways, railway lines and airports still suffer from significant low frequency noise pollution. Although the limited working bandwidth of acoustic metamaterials is a major issue limiting its application, combining meta-units that interact at various frequencies alongside multi-layer conventional solutions can deliver superior sound insulation in buildings. The review put forwards acoustic metamaterials, specifically emphasising superior sound absorption and transmission/insertion loss as critical properties for effective building sound insulation. The paper reveals a variety of acoustic metamaterials that can be adopted to compliment conventional sound insulation approaches for acoustically efficient building design. The performance of these metamaterials is then explained through their characteristic negative mass density, bulk modulus or repeating or locally resonating microstructure. The review is also extended to air transparent acoustic metamaterials that can be used for sound insulation of building ventilation. Lastly the prospects and challenges regarding the adoption of acoustic metamaterials in building insulation are also discussed. Overall, tuneable, and multifunctional acoustic metamaterials when thoughtfully integrated to building sound insulation can lead to significant acoustic comfort, space-saving and light-weighting.

Abstract:Acoustics is a classical field of study that has witnessed tremendous developments over the past 25 years. Driven by the novel acoustic effects underpinned by phononic crystals with periodic modulation of elastic building blocks in wavelength scale and acoustic metamaterials with localized resonant units in subwavelength scale, researchers in diverse disciplines of physics, mathematics, and engineering have pushed the boundary of possibilities beyond those long held as unbreakable limits. More recently, structure designs guided by the physics of graphene and topological electronic states of matter have further broadened the whole field of acoustic metamaterials by phenomena that reproduce the quantum effects classically. Use of active energy-gain components, directed by the parity-time reversal symmetry principle, has led to some previously unexpected wave characteristics. It is the intention of this review to trace historically these exciting developments, substantiated by brief accounts of the salient milestones. The latter can include, but are not limited to, zero/negative refraction, subwavelength imaging, sound cloaking, total sound absorption, metasurface and phase engineering, Dirac physics and topology-inspired acoustic engineering, non-Hermitian parity-time synthetic active metamaterials, and one-way propagation of sound waves. These developments may underpin the next generation of acoustic materials and devices, and offer new methods for sound manipulation, leading to exciting applications in noise reduction, imaging, sensing and navigation, as well as communications.

Abstract:A major limitation of current acoustic metamaterials is that their acoustic properties are either locked into place once fabricated or only modestly tunable, tying them to the particular application for which they are designed. We present in this paper a design approach that yields active metamaterials whose physical structure is fixed, yet their local acoustic response can be changed almost arbitrarily and in real-time by configuring the digital electronics that control the metamaterial acoustic properties. We demonstrate experimentally this approach by designing a metamaterial slab configured to act as a very thin acoustic lens that manipulates differently three identical, consecutive pulses incident on the lens. Moreover, we show that the slab can be configured to implement simultaneously various roles, such as that of a lens and beam steering device. Finally, we show that the metamaterial slab is suitable for efficient second harmonic acoustic imaging devices capable to overcome the diffraction limit of linear lenses. These advantages demonstrate the versatility of this active metamaterial and highlight its broad applicability, in particular to acoustic imaging.

Abstract:<p>Acoustic metamaterials (AMs), which are materials composed of subwavelength periodic artificial structures with specific designs, have drawn significant research attention. This is because of the extraordinary abilities of AMs to manipulate acoustic waves compared with those of traditional acoustic materials. In this review, current advances in AM research are comprehensively investigated and summarized. First, major theories regarding AMs, including the acoustic wave equation, crystal lattice and energy band theory, effective medium theory, and general Snell's law, are explained in detail. Existing AM structures are then described and divided into several categories based on their structural characteristics and responses to acoustic waves. Furthermore, to bridge the gap between design and practical application, both conventional and advanced AM manufacturing methods are summarized. The applications of AMs in the fields of acoustic cloaking, acoustic lensing, acoustic absorption, noise reduction, and supernormal sound transmission are particularly delineated. Finally, contemporary challenges, trends, and strategies relevant to AMs are discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive collection of AM‐related knowledge, including information regarding physical theories, structures, fabrication approaches, and applications, which will help promote the further development of AMs.</p>

Abstract:The concept of metamaterial recently emerged as a new frontier of scientific research, encompassing physics, materials science and engineering. In a broad sense, a metamaterial indicates an engineered material with exotic properties not found in nature, obtained by appropriate architecture either at macro-scale or at micro-/nano-scales. The architecture of metamaterials can be tailored to open unforeseen opportunities for mechanical and acoustic applications, as demonstrated by an impressive and increasing number of studies. Abstract:The advent of acoustic metasurfaces (AMs), which are the two-dimensional equivalents of metamaterials, has opened up new possibilities in wave manipulation using acoustically thin structures. Through the interaction between the acoustic waves and the subwavelength scattering, AMs exhibit versatile capabilities to control acoustic wave propagation such as by steering, focusing, and absorption. In recent years, this vibrant field has expanded to include tunable, reconfigurable, and programmable control to further expand the capacity of AMs. This paper reviews recent developments in AMs and summarizes the fundamental approaches for achieving tunable control, namely, by mechanical tuning, active control, and the use of field-responsive materials. An overview of basic concepts in each category is first presented, followed by a discussion of their applications and details about their performance. The review concludes with the outlook for future directions in this exciting field.

Abstract:The manipulation of acoustic waves is becoming increasingly crucial in research and practical applications. The coordinate transformation methods and acoustic metamaterials represent two significant areas of study that offer innovative strategies for precise acoustic wave control. This review highlights the applications of these methods in acoustic wave manipulation and examines their synergistic effects. We present the fundamental concepts of the coordinate transformation methods and their primary techniques for modulating electromagnetic and acoustic waves. Following this, we deeply study the principle of acoustic metamaterials, with particular emphasis on the superior acoustic properties of polymers. Moreover, the polymers have the characteristics of design flexibility and a light weight, which shows significant advantages in the preparation of acoustic metamaterials. The current research on the manipulation of various acoustic characteristics is reviewed. Furthermore, the paper discusses the combined use of the coordinate transformation methods and polymer acoustic metamaterials, emphasizing their complementary nature. Finally, this article envisions future research directions and challenges in acoustic wave manipulation, considering further technological progress and polymers' application potential. These efforts aim to unlock new possibilities and foster innovative ideas in the field.

Abstract:The manipulation of an acoustic field has attracted immense interest due to its practical significance in various fields, including medicine, communication, military and industrial detection. However, simple yet precise manipulation of the acoustic fields remains challenging, limited by the inherent properties of acoustic waves and natural materials, resulting in several long-standing problems in acoustics. Artificially engineered structures provide acoustic properties unattainable in the nature, opening up the possibility of breaking through these fundamental limitations and realizing fascinating sound manipulation functionalities. In this paper, based on the basic concepts of phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials/metasurfaces, we systematically review the research progress in the acoustic field manipulation with artificial structures, including acoustic one-way transmission, generation/decoding of acoustic orbital angular momentum, acoustic cloaking and coalescence of acoustic artificial structures and machine learning. Then, a brief introduction is provided regarding the potential of acoustic metamaterials in several applications, such as high-capacity/ high-speed acoustic communication, acoustic diffuser, and low-frequency sound absorption/insulation, fully representing the effectiveness and flexibility of the manual manipulation of the acoustic field. Finally, we discuss the future directions in this emerging research field.

Acoustic Birefringence via Non-Eulerian Metamaterials

Abstract:The recently proposed concept of metamaterials has opened exciting venues to control wave-matter interaction in unprecedented ways. Here we demonstrate the relevance of metamaterials for inducing acoustic birefringence, a phenomenon which has already found its versatile applications in optics in designing light modulators or filters, and nonlinear optic components. This is achieved in a suitably designed acoustic metamaterial which is non-Eulerian, in the sense that at low frequencies, it cannot be homogenized to a uniform acoustic medium whose behavior is characterized by Euler equation. Thanks to the feasibility of engineering its subwavelength structure, such non-Eulerian metamaterial allows one to desirably manipulate the birefringence process. Our findings may give rise to generation of innovative devices such as tunable acoustic splitters and filters.

Abstract:The concept of frequency‐independent antennas, known for their broad bandwidth in electromagnetics, is ingeniously applied to acoustics to realize a frequency‐independent sound‐absorbing metamaterials. Inspired by the concept of frequency‐independent antennas in the electromagnetics, which theoretically exhibit a frequency‐independent bandwidth, this paper extends the concept to acoustics by adopting a log‐spiral and its modified shape to introduce a class of metamaterials called frequency‐independent sound‐absorbing metamaterials. Without the requirement of multiple resonators, these metamaterials achieve an ultra‐broadband absorption spanning from 550 Hz for a wide range of incident angles up to 80°, using a single unit cell structure owing to Fabry–Pérot resonance, viscous boundary losses, and thermoviscous loss of the foam. Numerical and experimental analyses are provided to demonstrate the working principles of the proposed structures. Their performance is compared with archimedean spiral, and the influence of air and porous material parameters on the performance of the metamaterial is discussed in detail for normal and oblique incident waves. The underlying principle is discussed in detail, highlighting the distinctions between the proposed structures and state‐of‐the‐art broadband metamaterials. The proposed structures represent a pioneering advancement in the field by offering compact and ultra‐broadband sound‐absorbing metamaterials that are suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:Molding the wavefront of acoustic waves into the desired shape is of paramount significance in acoustics, which however are usually constrained by the acoustical response of naturally available materials. The emergence of acoustic metamaterials built by assembling artificial subwavelength elements provides distinct response to acoustic waves unattainable in nature. More recently, acoustic metasurfaces, a class of metamaterials with a reduced dimensionality, empower new physics and lead to extended functionalities different from their three-dimensional counterparts, enabling controlling, transmitted or reflected acoustic waves in ways that were not possible before. In this review paper, we present a comprehensive view of this rapidly growing research field by introducing the basic concepts of acoustic metasurfaces and the recent developments that have occurred over the past few years. We review the interesting properties of acoustic metasurfaces and their important functionalities of wavefront manipulation, followed by an outlook for promising future directions and potential practical applications.
Computational design of locally resonant acoustic metamaterials

Abstract:The so-called Locally Resonant Acoustic Metamaterials (LRAM) are considered for the design of specifically engineered devices capable of stopping waves from propagating in certain frequency regions (bandgaps), this making them applicable for acoustic insulation purposes. This fact has inspired the design of a new kind of lightweight acoustic insulation panels with the ability to attenuate noise sources in the low frequency range (below 5000 Hz) without requiring thick pieces of very dense materials. A design procedure based on different computational mechanics tools, namely, (1) a multiscale homogenization framework, (2) model order reduction strategies and (3) topological optimization procedures, is proposed. It aims at attenuating sound waves through the panel for a target set of resonance frequencies as well as maximizing the associated bandgaps. The resulting design's performance is later studied by introducing viscoelastic properties in the coating phase, in order to both analyse their effects on the overall design and account for more realistic behaviour. The study displays the emerging field of Computational Material Design (CMD) as a computational mechanics area with enormous potential for the design of metamaterial-based industrial acoustic parts.

Abstract:A bi-functional metamaterial is proposed for acoustic and electromagnetic manipulation simultaneously by Qiang Cheng, Tie Jun Cui, and co-workers, in article number 1800161. Under the illumination of sound, large acoustic insulation is achieved owing to the resonant modes within the double membrane structure. In the meanwhile, polarization-dependent responses are generated for microwave by attaching anisotropic meta-atoms on the membrane. This scheme is especially beneficial for developing such bi-functional devices in the future.
