Abstract:Drill a well. Induce a fracture. Pump water. Start flowback. This sounds like the steps used to bring to life tens of thousands of tight-oil and gas wells over the past quarter century. But what it really describes is the emerging approach that a pair of Houston-based companies are using to turn rock formations into giant batteries. Differences aside, the respective processes developed by Quidnet Energy and Sage Geosystems involve hydraulically fracturing vertical wells, injecting water into fractures, and flowing that water back to surface under high pressure to drive a small industrial turbine. Founded in 2013, Quidnet was the first to try to commercialize this concept which represents a new twist on a very old technology known as pumped storage hydropower. Introduced in the 1890s, the technique works chiefly by sending water uphill—e.g., a mountain or a fjord—to create a gravity-assisted energy system. And despite its geographical limitations, this pumped storage represents more than 90% of the world’s energy storage today, an estimated 9,000 GWh. Of course, what both Quidnet and Sage want to do instead is to have subsurface rock formations do the heavy lifting and force the water uphole like it was shooting out of a geyser. To highlight this distinction, Quidnet refers to its version as “geomechanical” pumped storage while Sage so far prefers to call it “mechanical” pumped storage. Each firm claimed this year to have shown through respective field tests that all this is not merely theoretical. Most of this work has involved existing wells but both companies have plans for dedicated new-drill wells. Quidnet and Sage say the electric outputs they’ve achieved so far are promising enough to start considering pumped storage in rocks as a way to solve grid shortages and the intermittency issues that hamper wind farms and solar arrays. During periods of low grid demand, the proposal is to run water pumps on surplus electricity. Hours or days later when demand rises, that water is released to the surface and most of the electricity required to pump it down can now flow back into the grid. Sage shared figures at a geothermal conference in September boasting its nascent approach as already cost competitive with traditional pumped storage and commercial-scale lithium-ion batteries. That optimism is built upon the company’s first and only test well in Starr County, Texas, which bested expectations. “The output just blew us away,” Cindy Taff, CEO of Sage, said at the PIVOT conference last month. “We literally had to repipe the surface equipment three times because we were getting more force and pressure than what we had anticipated.” Taff, who previously spent 35 years working in the oil and gas business for Shell, said the well produced a flow stream that was converted into 200 kW for 18 hours. This adds up to 3,600 kWh, which is roughly four times the electricity consumed each month in the average US household.

Abstract:The batteries aged during the life of an electric vehicle can be reused for a variety of stationary applications. In combination with photovoltaics, higher private consumption rates can be reached at a module level. At the level of complete vehicle high-voltage batteries, DC quick charge stations with low power connections or load management (peak shaving) represent an example for industrial clients. In the megawatt area, used electric vehicle batteries can provided grid support or they can be used to stabilize the energy from wind parks. The environmental benefits of an electric vehicle face repeated criticism. Along with the use of CO2-intensive, coal-based electricity for vehicle operation, the ecological rucksack of the battery is the primary focus. When the battery is reused at the end of the vehicle’s service life, the environmental benefits far exceed those of just regular recycling. The paper will show two already realized battery plants on a megawatt scale and report the experience in planning and construction. Both systems are used for grid control and can support a smart grid in the future.
Repurposing Coal Power Plants into Thermal Energy Storage for Supporting Zero-carbon Data Centers

Abstract:Coal power plants will need to be phased out and face stranded asset risks under the net-zero energy system transition. Repurposing coal power plants could recoup profits and reduce carbon emissions using the existing infrastructure and grid connections. This paper investigates a retrofitting strategy that turns coal power plants into thermal energy storage (TES) and zero-carbon data centers (DCs). The proposed capacity expansion model considers the co-locations of DCs, local renewablewith the system-generation, andlevel coal retir energy storage ement and retrofitting. We optimize the DC system configurations under the hourly-matching carbon policy and flexible operations. Results show that under hourly-matching carbon constraints, the retrofitted TES could complement the operations of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to reduce system costs. This could render DCs with optimal co-located renewable generations and energy storage more cost-effective than unconstrained DCs.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2), as the primary greenhouse gas, has significant impacts on global climate change, leading to severe and irreversible adverse consequences for ecosystems and human environments. To address the issue of excessive CO2 emissions, efforts in recent years have yielded significant progress in the development of clean energy sources and the promotion of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. Conventional CO2 capture techniques are limited in addressing global atmospheric CO2 excess effectively, as they target only high-concentration CO2 emissions and require implementation at specific emission points. Direct air capture (DAC) technology has emerged as a promising solution due to its flexibility in deployment, avoidance of land competition, and ability to capture legacy CO2 emissions. Additionally, DAC offers opportunities for producing synthetic clean fuels, thereby reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels and aiding in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This study provides a comprehensive review of DAC technology, encompassing its principles, technological advancements, real-world applications, challenges, and future research directions. By offering insights into the current state and potential of DAC technology, this study aims to guide global efforts in scaling up DAC deployment, ultimately contributing to achieving global carbon neutrality or even negative emissions.

Abstract:Battery energy storage technologies have witnessed both dramatic cost reduction and technical evolution in recent years. This is leading to widespread deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) worldwide, particularly to support operation of power grids with already deep penetration of renewables. Considering the development of new battery technologies with different power-to-energy ratios and for various engineering applications, BESSs could play a strategic role towards a net-zero energy future. New opportunities are emerging for BESSs to participate in several markets, provide different grid services, and perform “value stacking”, eventually allowing development of new business cases and improved BESS economics. BESS configurations that are “behind the meter”, “in front of the meter”, hybrid plants co-located with renewables, and so forth, are only some of the exciting propositions that are being seen in different countries and at different scales, from highly distributed (virtual power plants), to neighbourhood-level (community batteries), to utility scale.

Abstract:Abstract Cost‐effective and zero‐carbon‐emission seasonal/annual energy storage is highly required to achieve the Zero Emission Scenario (ZES) by 2050. The combination of Al production via inert‐anode smelting and Al conversion to electricity via Al−air batteries is a potential option. Although playing an important role in this approach, Al−air batteries, however, suffer from limited specific energy and inefficient collection of the discharge product. Herein, an important progress in addressing these issues is summarized, emphasizing the importance of non‐material, but rather process‐related aspects. First, a recently reported approach allowing controllable collection of discharge product and electrolyte regeneration is presented. Next, the importance of cell design in addressing the obstacles of Al−air batteries is emphasized. Subsequently, the impact of operational parameters on improving electrochemical performance of Al−air batteries is summarized. Last, a perspective on future research directions is proposed.

Low-carbon Lithium Extraction Makes Deep Geothermal Plants Cost-competitive in Energy Systems

Abstract:Lithium is a critical material for the energy transition, but conventional procurement methods have significant environmental impacts. In this study, we utilize regional energy system optimizations to investigate the techno-economic potential of the low-carbon alternative of direct lithium extraction in deep geothermal plants. We show that geothermal plants will become cost-competitive in conjunction with lithium extraction, even under unfavorable conditions and partially displace photovoltaics, wind power, and storage from energy systems. Our analysis indicates that if 10% of municipalities in the Upper Rhine Graben area in Germany constructed deep geothermal plants, they could provide enough lithium to produce about 1.2 million electric vehicle battery packs per year, equivalent to 70% of today`s annual electric vehicle registrations in the European Union. This approach could offer significant environmental benefits and has high potential for mass application also in other countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Italy, highlighting the importance of further research and development of this technology.

Abstract:Subzero startup constitutes a lingering obstacle impeding the diffusion of battery and fuel cell electric vehicles in cold regions. Both being electrochemical energy devices, lithium-ion battery (LIB) and polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) share many commonalities in their cold startup problems, tasks and principle behind startup techniques. Subzero startup of LIB and PEFC using alternating current (AC) is receiving increasing attention for its high efficiency, low degradation and superb reliability. To catch the wider attention in the research community and promote the development of this technique, we herein address the AC startup of LIB and PEFC in a single review and in a same framework. After a brief introduction to low temperature performance problem, subzero startup techniques for LIB and PEFC are classified based on a new criterion, i.e. the nature of the heat generation, instead of the location of heat generation. Then, the principle, development and implementation of AC startup are outlined. For the startup of LIB, the Li deposition criterion, the validation and variations in battery, and the comparison with the direct current techniques are elaborated. For the startup of PEFC, the validation in cell, the extension to stack, and the comparison with the air restriction self-heating technique are elaborated. Finally, the common challenges and special requirements for starting up LIB and PEFC are discussed, and the remaining issues and directions for further research are highlighted.

Abstract:Under the carbon neutrality goal, the projects to develop zero-carbon microgrids are emerging all over the world. However, the categories, trends, challenges, and future research prospects of the zero-carbon microgrid are still unclear. To deal with this problem, this research first reviews the real-world and simulation cases of zero-carbon microgrids in recent years and classifies them into two categories, i.e., on-grid mode and off-grid mode. Then, three development trends of the zero-carbon microgrid are discussed, including an extremely high ratio of clean energy, large-scale energy storage, and an extremely high ratio of power electronic devices. Next, the challenges in achieving the zero-carbon microgrids in terms of feasibility, flexibility, and stability are discussed in detail. Finally, future research prospects in long-term low-cost energy storage, power/energy balancing, and stability control, are emphasized.

End-to-End Direct-Current-Based Extreme Fast Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Using Lithium-Ion Battery Storage

Abstract:An urgent need to decarbonize the surface transport sector has led to a surge in the electrification of passenger and heavy-duty fleet vehicles. The lack of widespread public charging infrastructure hinders this electric vehicle (EV) transition. Extreme fast charging along interstates and highway corridors is a potential solution. However, the legacy power grid based on alternating current (AC) beckons for costly upgrades that will be necessary to sustain sporadic fast charging loads. The primary goal of this paper is to propose a sustainable, low-loss, extremely fast charging infrastructure based on photovoltaics (PV) and co-located lithium-ion battery storage (BESS). Lithium-ion BESS plays a pivotal role in our proposed design by mitigating demand charges and operating as an independent 16–18 h power source. An end-to-end direct current power network with high voltage direct current interconnection is also incorporated. The design methodology focuses on comprehensive hourly EV-load models generated for different types of passenger vehicles and heavy-duty fleet charging. Appropriate PV-BESS sizing, optimum tilt, and temperature compensation techniques based on 15 years of irradiation data were utilized in the design. The proposed grid-independent DC power networks can significantly improve well-to-wheels efficiency by minimizing total system losses for fast charging networks. The network power savings for low, medium, and high voltage use cases were evaluated. Our results demonstrate 17% to 25% power savings compared to the traditional AC case.

Abstract:In a system with a high number of renewable energy sources, some capacities are expected to be firm, controllable, large scale, and long durational to meet balanced energy and low-carbon demands. Due to such requirements, flexible technologies such as demand response, short-duration storage, and other forms of energy storage (e.g., hydrogen and thermal storage) are emerging; however, little is known regarding the system benefits of long-duration electricity storage or the optimal energy storage portfolio. Pudjianto and Strbac from Imperial College London have filled this gap by analyzing the role and quantifying the value of long-duration electricity storage in facilitating a cost-effective transition to a low-carbon energy system. Their research illustrates the importance of energy storage in influencing long-term system development and enabling a more efficient investment in low-carbon technologies. Most of the benefits are derived from the savings in low-carbon generation investments.

Abstract:The key change in the environment is the gases which emit into the atmosphere and majorly carbon emissions by urbanization with greatly reduced energy needs through efficiency gains such that the balance of energy needs can be supplied with renewable technologies. According to various estimates, carbon stock consumes 30 to 40% of all energy resources. As the result, it is possible to get carbon dioxide atmosphere emissions reduction due to energy consumption reduction. In this research, we had a sample of current generation low-energy consumption and carbon storage by different techniques and usage by renewable sources, progress towards CCUS Technology.The way the zero-energy co2 goal is defined affects the choices designers to make achieve for this goal and whether they can claim success. CCUS will also support the transition from Blue Hydrogen to Green Hydrogen by accelerating the demand growth and creating technologies and infrastructure for the production, storage and transportation of hydrogen. Conversion of co2 to usable chemicals and products will spur economic development and help achieve some of the SDGs like green aggregates, green ammonia and methanol and ultimately green energy. This study shows the design impacts of the definition used for CCUS and progressed goals towards CCUS goals.

Abstract:Within the scope of the energy transition an increasing share of intermittent renewable energy sources demand for grid balancing energy storage technologies, for which a novel zero-emission methanol based energy storage system is introduced. The objective is to establish the feasibility of this system as a grid balancing energy storage method, based on thermal efficiency and cost, at an input power of 50 MWel and boundary conditions that are set to reflect geographically independent operation. The main components are determined to be a PEM electrolyser followed by a recirculating catalytic synthesis reactor for methanol production. Alternatives for power generation are a transcritical carbon dioxide gas turbine (tCO2-GT), a supercritical carbon dioxide gas turbine (sCO2-GT) and a combination of methanol steam reforming and PEM fuel cell (MSR-PEMFC). Modelling of the entire system with respectively tCO2-GT, sCO2-GT and MSR-PEMFC for power generation leads to a system energy efficiency of 30.1%, 26.5% and 24.1%. Levelised cost of storage is estimated to be respectively 0.24 $/kWh, 0.25 $/kWh and 0.34 $/kWh based on equipment cost estimations and factorial estimates, provisionally not taking into account the variable operational costs due to the extent of uncertainty in specifically catalyst type and degradation. Hence, based on these results the most efficient and cost effective system configuration is the tCO2-GT which can be competitive with hydrogen seasonal energy storage systems. sCO2-GT thermodynamic efficiency can be improved if cost effective solutions are found for temperature constraints. Furthermore, detailed elaboration of individual components and grid modelling of the system should lead to more accurate results and possibly increased thermodynamic performance. Concluding, when further elaborated the proposed system could be a practical solution to seasonal energy storage.

Abstract:The clean energy transition requires a co-evolution of innovation, investment, and deployment strategies for emerging energy storage technologies. A deeply decarbonized energy system research platform needs materials science advances in battery technology to overcome the intermittency challenges of wind and solar electricity. Simultaneously, policies designed to build market growth and innovation in battery storage may complement cost reductions across a suite of clean energy technologies. Further integration of R&D and deployment of new storage technologies paves a clear route toward cost-effective low-carbon electricity. Here we analyse deployment and innovation using a two-factor model that integrates the value of investment in materials innovation and technology deployment over time from an empirical dataset covering battery storage technology. Complementary advances in battery storage are of utmost importance to decarbonization alongside improvements in renewable electricity sources. We find and chart a viable path to dispatchable US$1 W−1 solar with US$100 kWh−1 battery storage that enables combinations of solar, wind, and storage to compete directly with fossil-based electricity options.

Abstract:Abstract With the planned future reliance on variable renewable energy, the ability to store energy for prolonged time periods will be required to reduce the disruption of market fluctuations. This paper presents a method to analyze a hybrid liquid-oxygen (LOx) storage / direct-fired sCO2 power cycle and optimize the economic performance over a diverse range of scenarios. The system utilizes a modified version of the NET Power process to produce energy when energy demand exceeds the supply while displacing much of the cost of the ASU energy requirements through cryogenic storage of oxygen. The model uses marginal cost of energy data to determine the optimal times to charge and discharge the system over a given scenario. The model then applies ramp rates and other time-dependent factors to generate an economic model for the system without storage considerations. The size of the storage system is then applied to create a realistic model of the plant operation. From the real plant operation model, the amount of energy charged and discharged, the CAPEX of each system, energy costs and revenue and other parameters can be calculated. The economic parameters are then combined to calculate the net present value (NPV) of the system for the given scenario. The model was then run through the SMPSO genetic algorithm in Python for a variety of geographic regions and large-scale scenarios (high solar penetration) to maximize the NPV based on multiple parameters for each subsystem. The LOx storage requirements will also be discussed.

Abstract:Coal has been used for hundreds of years for power and heat generation through combustion, along with the unfortunate release of the huge amount of CO2, SO2, and NO emissions. Nanotechnology may provide an avenue for large‐scale coal use to create new materials, thereby mitigating the need to burn coal. As the world is committed to reach carbon peak by 2030 and net zero by 2050, the use of coal as an energy source is facing unprecedented challenges. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global annual coal demand is estimated to drop from more than 5640 million tonnes of coal equivalent (Mtce) in 2021 to 540 Mtce in 2050 under the net zero emission scenario, mostly being replaced by renewable energy such as solar and wind. Therefore, the coal industry is vigorously seeking alternative applications to keep it thriving, and nanotechnology can be one of the contributors. Herein, the challenges to coal‐based carbon nanomaterials syntheses are outlined, along with a path toward commercialization. Coal‐based carbon nanomaterials can be promising contributors to the concept of clean coal conversion, initiating its migration from an energy source to a high‐value‐added carbon source.

Abstract:Carbon capture and storage(CCS) technology is broadly identified as one of the most important low carbon technologies.It manifests a bright future by coordinating the discrepancy between continuous utilization of fossil fuels and reduction in carbon emission.A brief introduction on the current utilization of CCS in power systems is firstly presented,and the development prospect of carbon capture power plant is depicted.Then,the major challenges incurred by the large-scale introduction of CCS in power systems are revealed,considering the actual situations in power plant operation,power systems operation,individual investment by plant operator and power mix planning for the whole system.On this basis,innovation incurred by CCS technologies utilized in power systems is assessed.Moreover,the improved operation margin in system operation and the enhanced penetrations for large-scale utilizations of wind power that incurred by connecting carbon capture power plant to power grid is discussed.
