Abstract:Membrane fouling is an urgent problem needing to be solved for practical application of nanofiltration membranes. In this study, an amphiphilic nanofiltration membrane with hydrophilic domains as well as low surface energy domains was developed, to integrate a fouling-resistant defense mechanism and a fouling-release defense mechanism. A simple and effective two-step surface modification of a polyamide NF membrane was applied. Firstly, triethanolamine (TEOA) with abundant hydrophilic functional groups was grafted to the membrane surface via reacting with the residual acyl chloride group of the nanofiltration membrane, making the nanofiltration membranes more hydrophilic; secondly, the 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS), well-known as a low surface energy material, was covalently grafted on the hydroxyl functional groups through hydrogen bonding. Filtration experiments with model foulants (bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein solution, humic acid solution (HA) and sodium alginate solution (SA)) were performed to estimate the antifouling properties of the newly developed nanofiltration membranes. As a result of surface modification proposed in this study the antifouling properties of an amphiphilic modified F-PA/PSF membrane were enhanced more than 10% compared to the PA/PSF specimen in terms of flux recovery ratio.

Abstract:Turbidity-causing particles and natural organic matter (NOM) in surface water are two major contributors to membrane fouling. This study focused on the effects of particles, NOM and particles-NOM contaminated raw water on membrane fouling in ultrafiltration (UF) and coagulation-UF process, respectively. The kaolinite solution and humic acid (HA) solution was used to simulate the particles and NOM contaminated raw water respectively in the laboratory experiments. It was found that pollutant constituents and concentration of raw water and pre-treatment process had an influence on membrane fouling. There was a linear relationship between the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of raw water and that of effluent in UF when HA-contaminated raw water was tested. The transmembrane pressure increase rate was in exponential relationship with raw water TOC. HA mainly contributed to the irreversible fouling, while kaolinite mainly brought the reversible fouling. It was verified that coagulation pre-treatment could postpone membrane fouling development in the limited range of coagulant dosage. Additionally, it was also found that combined fouling effects of particles and NOM were not the simple addition of the individual's effect.

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of different floc morphologies produced by micro-flocculation process on filtration of a self-constructed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane. Aluminum sulfate was used as a flocculant and humic acid (HA) and kaolin as raw water. Both the properties of flocs formed during the micro-flocculation process (floc size and distribution, fractal dimension) and the effects of floc formation on membrane flux under different conditions were investigated. The surface morphology of the contaminated membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and adhesion between the PVDF membrane and organic pollutants was measured to analyze the membrane fouling mechanism. Results showed that the main mechanism during a micro-flocculation process using Al3+ as a flocculant is electrical neutralization to remove organic matter. With an increase in flocculant dosage, floc size increased and the fractal dimension of flocs decreased. The attenuation rate of membrane flux was negatively correlated with floc size. The larger the floc, the lower the membrane flux attenuation rate, and the looser the filter cake layer formed during the ultrafiltration process. Comparatively, membrane fouling caused by flocs with smaller fractal dimension was lighter, and the membrane flux recovery rate was also higher. The interaction force between PVDF and organic matter was positively correlated with the corresponding membrane flux attenuation rate during the initial stage of operation. When dosage of Al3+ was 5 mg·L-1 and initial pH was 7, the HA removal rate was 96.7%, the membrane flux attenuation rate was lowest, and the flux recovery rate reached 88%.

Abstract:The integration of flocs with ultrafiltration (UF) membranes is a promising method to alleviate membrane fouling and reduce land use; however, the floc charge and related pollutant distribution mechanism in the floc-based layer, which are key issues in further improving membrane performance, have been given little attention up to this point. Herein, the UF membrane performance in the presence of differently charged floc layers and the corresponding humic acids (HA) distribution were investigated. The results indicated that the floc charge played an important role in UF membrane behavior due to the different HA distribution mechanisms. Owing to the electrostatic adsorption, most negatively charged HA molecules were relatively uniformly adsorbed inside the positively charged floc layer (pH < 8.5), and fewer HA molecules reached the membrane surface. The HA removal efficiency was as high as 92.5 ± 1.5% at a pH of 6, and the final J/J0 was 0.73. It has been shown that pore adsorption or blocking was mainly alleviated, and the proportion of the irreversible fouling was only 6.0 ± 2.4% at a pH of 6. In contrast, fewer HA molecules were intercepted inside the negatively charged floc layer (pH > 8.5), and they were mostly distributed at the top and bottom of the cake layer due to electrostatic repulsion. The HA removal efficiency significantly decreased to 32.4 ± 1.2%, while the final J/J0 increased to 0.78 at a pH of 9.5. Further experiments demonstrated that the cake-layer resistance was considerably alleviated, and the proportion of the reversible fouling was remarkably reduced to 49.5 ± 3.2% at a pH of 9.5. In addition, membrane fouling caused by large–molecular weight (MW) HA was easily alleviated by the positively charged floc layer, while that caused by small-MW HA was easily alleviated by the negatively charged one. These findings have significant potential applications in practical membrane-based treatments of drinking water.

Abstract:Integrated ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are a promising technology in water treatment. However, commonly used granular adsorbents are only injected into the membrane tank once, which not only results in serious membrane surface damage, but also severe membrane fouling due to the low utilization efficiency of adsorbents over time. To overcome these disadvantages, loose Fe-based flocs, which display better sludge discharge than Al-based flocs, were investigated to improve integrated UF membrane performance under different injection frequencies with humic acid (HA) and reservoir water. Results showed that multiple dynamic floc layers were formed with batch injections and a critical injection frequency existed. When the injection frequency was too low, membrane fouling was induced by the formation of a dense HA cake layer on the floc surface. In contrast, it was alleviated when the HA molecules entering the membrane tank did not exceed the adsorption ability of the flocs injected each time. HA removal efficiency also increased with increasing injection frequency due to the improvement of floc utilization efficiency. With changing floc characteristics, better membrane performance was induced, especially under acidic conditions, which was ascribed to the higher positive surface charge and specific surface area of flocs. Raw water experiments further confirmed the excellent membrane performance based on high pollutant removal efficiency and minor membrane fouling. According to the outstanding membrane performance, this novel integrated floc-membrane process has great application potential in water treatment.

Abstract:Maximizing the energy-profitable treatment of municipal wastewater (MW) is of significance to achieve energy-neutral operation for wastewater treatment plant. Direct membrane filtration technology has been considered as an effective way to separate organic carbon from MW for subsequent anaerobic energy-recovering process, but its application is restrained by severe membrane fouling issues. Thus, it is essential to identify the substances in MW that are responsible for membrane fouling and find out efficient anti-fouling methods. In this work, an integrated approach through combining multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares analysis with infrared attenuated total reflection mapping was adopted to explore the membrane fouling process, and three coagulants, i.e., polyacrylamide, Al-2(SO4)(3) and FeCl3, were individually used to mitigate membrane fouling. Results show that the 1-8 mu m biopolymer clusters, i.e., humic-like and protein-like substances, were the predominant foulants in MW. In addition, membrane fouling caused by proteins was found to be more severe than that by humic substances. Coagulation pretreatment was demonstrated to be effective in mitigating membrane fouling. Al-2(SO4)(3) or FeCl3 had superior anti-fouling performance comparing to that of polyacrylamide. The dosage of polyacrylamide needs to be optimized according to the actual MW characteristics as its overdose would cause a substantial decline of membrane flux. These results provide a deep understanding of the membrane fouling mechanisms for organic carbon separation from MW and are beneficial for developing efficient and cost-effective membrane fouling mitigation strategies. Abstract:Iron/aluminum mixed flocs were pre-deposited onto an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane surface to test their antifouling properties in the presence of humic acid (HA). Membranes modified with higher aluminum mole ratios in the mixture were more effective in controlling membrane fouling. Relatively strong adhesion was observed between the mixed flocs and the UF membrane used. The differences in the structure of the deposited layer were an important contributing factor for antifouling properties, which was significantly influenced by solution pH. Scanning electron microscopy showed that dense deposition layers were formed by small flocs at pH 6.0, while loose deposition layers were formed by large flocs at pH 8.0. Atomic force microscopy showed that the surface roughness of the deposition layer was much larger at pH 6.0 than that at pH 8.0. The corresponding positive charge of the mixed flocs was also higher at pH 6.0, resulting in stronger adsorption ability to the negatively charged HA molecules. These factors reduced the amount of HA getting to the membrane surface and thus helped increase membrane flux at lower pH values. In addition, HA molecules with various molecular weights were removed much faster at pH 6.0 than at pH 8.0.

Abstract:The organic fouling characteristics of hollow fiber ultrafiltration (HFUF) and multibore ultrafiltration (MBUF) membranes from long-term ultrafiltration (UF) membrane systems were systemically investigated in this study. The objective was to obtain insights into the fouling behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a pilot-scale ultra-high-recovery membrane filtration system (p-UHMS) used for surface water treatment. The pilot system consisted of a series of two different UF membranes (1st stage: polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) HFUF and 2nd stage: polyethersulfone (PES) MBUF). It was designed to feed the HFUF concentrate to the MBUF membranes to achieve ≥99.5 % total water recovery for surface water treatment, as these advances might enhance the production efficiencies of drinking water. The experimental results confirmed that hydrophobic DOM controlled the formation of HFUF membrane organic fouling, whereas hydrophilic DOM, including polysaccharide-like and protein-like matter, promoted MBUF membrane fouling. These opposing trends were attributed to the hydrophilic characteristics of the MBUF membrane surfaces (contact angle: PVDF = 90-130° and PES ≤ 80°), which reduced the hydrophobic interactions between the UF membrane surfaces and foulants. The performance declines of the MBUF membrane due to fouling layer formation was considerably severer than those of the HFUF membrane, decreasing total permeate water in the p-UHMS. Moreover, the quantity of the desorbed MBUF membrane foulants via 0.1 N NaOH was roughly 7.2 times larger than that of the desorbed HFUF membrane foulants through 0.1 N NaOH, indicating that alkaline-based cleaning agent could much more efficiently recover the performance of the fouled MBUF membranes. Hence, adequate cleaning strategies using alkaline-based agent for the MBUF membrane appeared to be essential for preventing the performance deterioration of the p-UHMS.

Abstract:Pre-deposition technology is a promising method for alleviating membrane fouling, and in situ hydrolytic flocs have strong adsorption ability. In comparison with iron salts, less corrosiveness is induced by aluminum salts. Here, flocs formed by aluminum salts were pre-deposited onto the surface of an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane, aimed at investigating the antifouling performance with humic acid (HA) or bovine serum albumin (BSA). The results showed that Al-based flocs were well distributed onto the membrane surface, and a relatively dense and homogeneous deposition layer was formed. Both HA and BSA could largely be adsorbed/rejected by the pre-deposited layer during filtration. In comparison to results for solution pH of 8.0, the floc layer was much denser with a larger surface specific area and smaller average pore diameter at pH 6.0. Due to the existence of Al-13 species, a more positively charged floc layer occurred at lower pH values, leading to stronger adsorption abilities toward the negatively charged HA and BSA molecules. The floc layer significantly reduced the possibility of HA and BSA molecules reaching the UF membrane, which helped alleviate membrane fouling under lower pH conditions. Furthermore, the results for effluent with pH between 6.0 and 8.0 showed that the removal efficiency of HA molecules with small molecular weight (< 3 kDa) was also higher, especially at pH 6.0.
Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling Induced by Humic Acid with Typical Inorganic Salts.

Abstract:Severe ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling is always induced by humic acid (HA). However, little attention has been paid to the influence of inorganic salts, and even the studies related have been limited to only a single kind of salt. In addition, the concentration of the inorganic salts reported in previous studies is much high. Herein, the effect of HA on UF membrane performance was investigated in the presence of typical inorganic salts, with concentrations similar to those in natural waters or actually used in most current water plants. The results showed that membrane performance was influenced little by monovalent inorganic salts (NaCl and KCl), while divalent inorganic salts (CaCl2 and MgCl2) could exacerbate the membrane fouling. For trivalent inorganic salts (AlCl3·6H2O and FeCl3·6H2O), floc adsorption was the dominant HA removing mechanism, and AlCl3·6H2O behaved better than FeCl3·6H2O. Relating to the floc properties, severe membrane fouling occurred with low dosage, while it was mitigated with high dosage. Compared with the trivalent inorganic salts, more severe membrane fouling was caused by divalent inorganic salts. Additionally, little synergistic or inhibitory effect occurred with mixtures of divalent inorganic salts and trivalent inorganic salts. Furthermore, analysis with the classical fouling models showed that cake filtration was the main fouling mechanism with/without inorganic salts. Based on the findings, we believe these different HA behaviors exhibited during coagulation process with inorganic salts will have a large potential application in UF membrane fouling alleviation in water treatment.

Abstract:Membrane fouling has become the one of main obstacles for the widespread application of membrane technology in water treatment processes. Coagulation as pretreatment is proven to be effective for the alleviation of membrane fouling. In this study, the influence of humic acid (HA)/sodium alginate (SA) fractions in the structure and resistance of cake layer on the membrane surface was investigated. The presence of SA at an appropriate fraction could facilitate the formation of large and loosely branched flocs and thereby form a more permeable cake layer on the membrane surface due to good bridging and charge neutralization abilities of SA molecules. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed for monitoring the dynamic formation process of cake layer under different HA/SA fractions. The cake layer with a higher thickness was observed to be rapidly formed on the membrane surface at the presence of SA in water. According to the theoretical analysis, the membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration (UF) combined system demonstrated to be highly dependent on the size and intra-porosity of flocs. The fractal dimension of flocs might have an impact on the resistance of cake layer through affecting the porosity of aggregated flocs. The SA molecules could be used as the coagulant aid for effective alleviation of membrane fouling and the improvement of filtration performance in a coagulation-UF combined system.

Abstract:Photocatalytic membrane filtration has emerged as a promising technology for water purification because it integrates both physical rejection and chemical destruction of contaminants in a single unit, and also largely mitigates membrane fouling by natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, we evaluated the performance of a photocatalytic membrane system for mitigating fouling by a humic acid, which is representative NOM, and identified critical properties of the humic acid that determined membrane fouling. We prepared a partially oxidized humic acid (OHA) through the photocatalysis of a purified humic acid (PHA), and the OHA showed reduced fouling for polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes compared to PHA. Molecular-level characterizations indicated that OHA had a reduced molecular size, an increased oxygen content, and increased hydrophilicity. OHA also formed smaller aggregates on the fouled membrane surfaces than PHA. The introduction of oxygen-containing, hydrophilic functional groups, e.g., -OH and -COOH, to the humic acid and the depolymerization or mineralization of the humic acid in photocatalysis could result in the reduction of the foulant-membrane and foulant-foulant interactions, as characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), thereby mitigating membrane fouling. Foulant-membrane adhesion forces were always larger than foulant-foulant adhesion forces in our study, irrespective of the humic acid before or after photocatalytic oxidation, which may suggest that the reduction of foulant-membrane interactions is critical for membrane fouling control. In summary, this study sheds light into humic acid fouling in a photocatalytic membrane system through a systematic and comprehensive research approach, and provides insights for the design of novel membrane materials and processes with improved performance for water purification.

New Insights into the Fouling of a Membrane during the Ultrafiltration of Complex Organic–Inorganic Feed Water

Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of the fouling of a ceramic membrane by a mixture containing high concentrations of humic acid and colloidal silica during cross-flow ultrafiltration under various operating conditions. Two types of feed water were tested: feed water containing humic acid and feed water containing a mixture of humic acid and colloidal silica. The colloidal silica exacerbated the fouling, yielding lower fluxes (109–394 L m−2 h−1) compared to the humic acid feed water (205–850 L m−2 h−1), while the retentions were higher except for the highest cross-flow rate. For the humic acid feed water, the irreversible resistance prevails under the cross-flow rate of 5 L min−1. During the filtration of an organic–inorganic mixture, the reversible resistance due to the formation of a colloidal cake layer prevails under all operating conditions with an exception. The exception is the filtration of the organic–inorganic mixture of a 50 mg L−1 humic acid concentration which resulted in a lower flux than the one of a 150 mg L−1 humic acid concentration under 150 kPa and a cross-flow rate of 5 L min−1. Here, the irreversible fouling is unexpectedly overcome. This is unusual and occurs due to the low agglomeration at low concentrations of humic acid under a high cross-flow rate. Under lower transmembrane pressure and a moderate cross-flow rate, fouling can be mitigated, and relatively high fluxes are yielded with high retentions even in the presence of nanoparticles. In this way, colloidal silica influences the minimization of membrane fouling by organic humic acid contributing to the control of in-pore organic fouling.

Abstract:This review investigates antifouling agents used in the process of membrane separation (MS), in reverse osmosis (RO), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), microfiltration (MF), membrane distillation (MD), and membrane bioreactors (MBR), and clarifies the fouling mechanism. Membrane fouling is an incomplete substance formed on the membrane surface, which will quickly reduce the permeation flux and damage the membrane. Foulant is colloidal matter: organic matter (humic acid, protein, carbohydrate, nano/microplastics), inorganic matter (clay such as potassium montmorillonite, silica salt, metal oxide, etc.), and biological matter (viruses, bacteria and microorganisms adhering to the surface of the membrane in the case of nutrients) The stability and performance of the tested nanometric membranes, as well as the mitigation of pollution assisted by electricity and the cleaning and repair of membranes, are reported. Physical, chemical, physico-chemical, and biological methods for cleaning membranes. Biologically induced biofilm dispersion effectively controls fouling. Dynamic changes in membrane foulants during long-term operation are critical to the development and implementation of fouling control methods. Membrane fouling control strategies show that improving membrane performance is not only the end goal, but new ideas and new technologies for membrane cleaning and repair need to be explored and developed in order to develop future applications.

Abstract:Nowadays, integrated microfiltration (MF) membrane systems treatment is becoming widely popular due to its feasibility, process reliability, commercial availability, modularity, relative insensitivity in case of wastewater of various industrial sources as well as raw water treatment and lower operating costs. The well thought out, designed and implemented use of membranes can decrease capital cost, reduce chemical usage, and require little maintenance. Due to their resistance to extreme operating conditions and cleaning protocols, ceramic MF membranes are gradually becoming more employed in the drinking water and wastewater treatment industries when compared with organic and polymeric membranes. Regardless of their many advantages, during continuous operation these membranes are susceptible to a fouling process that can be detrimental for successful and continuous plant operations. Chemical and microbial agents including suspended particles, organic matter particulates, microorganisms and heavy metals mainly contribute to fouling, a complex multifactorial phenomenon. Several strategies, such as chemical cleaning protocols, turbulence promoters and backwashing with air or liquids are currently used in the industry, mainly focusing around early prevention and treatment, so that the separation efficiency of MF membranes will not decrease over time. Other strategies include combining coagulation with either inorganic or organic coagulants, with membrane treatment which can potentially enhance pollutants retention and reduce membrane fouling.

Membrane Fouling in Ultrafiltration of Natural Water after Pretreatment to Different Extents

Abstract:The combined fouling during ultrafiltration (UF) of surface water pretreated to different extents was investigated to disclose the roles of polysaccharides, proteins, and inorganic particles in UF membrane fouling. Both reversible and irreversible fouling decreased with enhanced pretreatment (biologically active carbon (BAC) treatment and sand filtration). The sand filter effluent fouled the membrane very slowly. The UF membrane removed turbidity to less than 0.1 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU), reduced polysaccharides by 25.4%–29.9%, but rejected few proteins. Both polysaccharides and inorganic particles were detected on the fouled membranes, but inorganic particles could be effectively removed by backwashing. The increase of turbidity in the sand filter effluent to 3.05 NTU did not significantly increase the fouling rate, but an increase in the turbidity in the BAC effluent to 6.11 NTU increased the fouling rate by more than 100%. The results demonstrated that the polysaccharide, not the protein, constituents of biopolymers were responsible for membrane fouling. Membrane fouling was closely associated with a small fraction of polysaccharides in the feed water. Inorganic particles exacerbated membrane fouling only when the concentration of fouling–inducing polysaccharides in the feed water was relatively high. The combined fouling was largely reversible, and polysaccharides were the predominant substances responsible for irreversible fouling.

Abstract:As a new purification technology of micro-polluted raw water,the ultrafitration combined with other conventional treatment technologies attracts more and more widespread attention and becomes a hot issue in drinking water treatment,and also provides a choice for rural and small town water plants. However,the membrane fouling in ultrafiltration is a great obstacle problem which restricts its widespread popularization and application in actual projects. The new progresses in ultrafiltration membrane fouling control in recent years are summed up,which include the mechanisms and various factors that affect membrane fouling in ultrafiltration,the technologies for membrane fouling prevention and control,the membrane cleaning methods and so on. The future research emphases and directions of membrane fouling in ultrafiltration are put forward.
