Abstract:The combined flooding in oil recovery is a multiphase chr omatographic process.Modeling for multiphase, multicomponent nonlinear chromatog raphy was applied to simulation of the surfactant/polymer flooding process.By me ans of the method of characteristics, the characteristic velocities of saturatio n and concentration waves were solved.Then, integrating the eigenvectors led to wave profiles of saturation and concentration in physical spatial domain.The sim ulation results indicated that the concentration shock of polymer appeared earli er than that of surfactant; moreover due to solutes’movement, saturation wave could develop into multi-shock, which enabled the oleic flow to form oil b ank rapidly.In addition,the influencing factors, such as concentration, flow vel ocity, adsorption constant and partitioning coefficient were also discussed.

Abstract:Polymer-surfactant binary combination flooding (SP flooding) is an important enhanced oil recovery technology which has promising applications in China. The determination of SP flooding implementation plans usually needs numerical simulation technologies. The main parameters that SP flooding numerical simulation need are based on indoor experiments. Due to uncertainties of numerical simulation parameters, history matching has big difficulties. Based on core displacement experiments, this research used numerical simulation software to match the core displacement experiments results and determine the numerical simulation parameters. On this basis, the effect of SP system numerical simulation parameters to water cut curves and EOR curves has been analyzed, the sensitivity coefficient has been introduced to evaluate sensitivities of water cut decline (Δfw) and EOR increment (ΔEOR). Research results indicate that sensitive degrees of ΔEOR and Δfw to different parameters have a consistent sequence, and system sensitivities arranged in sensitivity degree from strong to weak are as below: polymer adsorption, surfactant interface tension, surfactant adsorption, polymer solution viscosity, inaccessible pore volume, residual resistance factor.

Abstract:Abstract Per recent analyses, in the near future, over half amount of the oil extracted globally, will require some form of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques. Existing literature and historical investigations suggest that in oil reservoirs having viscosities between 10 – 150 m.Pa.s, there is a significant potential for tertiary recovery through the application of polymer flooding. For reservoir oil viscosities above 150 mPa.s, the polymer pumping efficiency goes down as polymer injectivity reduces significantly with increasing injection water viscosity that are used to attain a favorable mobility ratio at such high oil viscosities. To overcome this limiting factor, in this study, we propose the use of supramolecular assemblies (SMA) that have adjustable viscosity properties. Complexation of long-chain amino-amides and maleic acid is used to make these assemblies, which allow it to have reversible viscosity depending on the solution pH level. To maintain high injection efficiency, during pumping, SMA solutions will be kept at low viscosity values. On entry in deep reservoir or at oil contact phase, through introduction of an external stimulus the viscosity of SMA solution will be reversed to a much higher viscosity. This will allow to sufficiently improve the mobility ratio. Preliminary results from lab-scale studies have indicated that along with reversibly adjustable viscosity property, SMA solutions are also tolerant to high temperatures and salt concentrations. Supramolecular solutions can be considered as healable polymer systems, since unlike conventional polymer they disassemble and re-assemble when exposed to high temperature and stress conditions. In such conditions, conventional polymers generally undergo degradation. Additionally, through molecular scission processes SMA solutions can also be used in highly confining environments as well as in permafrost conditions and thin zones where conventional thermal techniques are not applicable. The objective of this work is the development of novel SMA system that have the aforementioned properties of reversibly adjustable viscosity through pH, tolerance to high temperature and salt concentrations through desired interfacial properties. Lab-scale preliminary results have shown the potential economic benefits of the use of SMA solutions on a field-wide scale. Based on the results, it must be emphasized that SMA systems have a worldwide application in oil reservoirs for EOR purposes.

Abstract:This paper presents recent advances in the subject of modeling and optimization of ASP (Alkaline, Surfactant and Polymer) flooding. We used an approach that models the behavior of the surfactant-oil-water-microemulsion system based on solubility data. In Type III systems, the emulsion is distributed judiciously between the oil and water phases without the need to introduce a third liquid phase. This model captures the most important physical and chemical phenomena in the ASP process. The model is validated with numerous coreflooding experiments conducted by different research institutes as well as with a specialized chemical flood simulator. Agreements between the model and the experiments in terms of oil recovery and pressure drop were achieved for all core floods. In addition, the model is consistent with both UTCHEM-EQBATCH and UTCHEM-IPHREEQC. We investigated the potential of hybrid low salinity ASP flooding in which Low Salinity Waterflooding (LSW) was implemented in secondary production and followed by ASP flooding. This approach can provide a superior performance compared to the conventional chemical flooding because it provides better oil recovery in the secondary stage and promotes the synergy between a low salinity environment and ASP slugs. Finally, the proposed robust optimization workflow helps to increase a project NPV and significantly reduces the uncertainty range associated with geology.

Abstract:Chemical flooding in the petroleum industry has a larger scale of oil recovery efficiency than water flooding. On the other hand, it is far more technical, costly, and risky. Numerical reservoir simulation can be employed to conduct mechanism study, feasibility evaluation, pilot plan optimization, and performance prediction for chemical flooding to improve recovery efficiency and reduce operational costs. In this article, we study numerical simulation of chemical flooding such as alkaline, surfactant, polymer, and foam (ASP+foam) flooding. The main displacement mechanisms in this type of flooding are interfacial tension lowering, capillary desaturation, chemical synergetic effects, and mobility control. The model of chemical flooding involves such physicochemical phenomena as dispersion, diffusion, adsorption, chemical reactions, and in situ generation of surfactant from acidic crude oil. The numerical simulator is based on a sequential solution approach that solves both pressure and compositions implicitly, and is applied to three experiments, a chemical flow without mass transfer between phases, a laboratory sandstone core, and an ASP+foam displacement problem with mass transfer, and to a real oilfield. A comparison with UTCHEM is also performed. These applications and comparison indicate that this numerical simulator is practical, efficient, and accurate for simulating complex chemical flooding processes.
Study on Microscopic Oil Displacement Mechanism of Alkaline-Surfactant-Polymer Ternary Flooding

Abstract:Alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding is one of the most effective and promising ways to enhance oil recovery (EOR). The synergistic effect between alkali, surfactant, and polymer can respectively promote emulsification performance, reduce interfacial tension, and improve bulk phase viscosity, thus effectively improving flooding efficiency. However, the displacement mechanism of ASP flooding and the contribution of different components to the oil displacement effect still need further discussion. In this study, five groups of chemical slugs were injected into the fracture model after water flooding to characterize the displacement effect of weak alkali, surfactant, polymer, and their binary/ternary combinations on residual oil. Additionally, the dominant mechanism of the ASP flooding system to improve the recovery was studied. The results showed that EOR can be improved through interfacial reaction, low oil/water interfacial tension (IFT), and increased viscosity. In particular, the synergistic effect of ASP includes sweep and oil washing. As for sweep, the swept volume is expanded by the interfacial reaction between the alkali and the acidic components in Daqing crude oil, and the polymer increases the viscosity of the system. As for oil washing, the surfactant generated by the alkali cooperates with surfactants to reduce the IFT to an ultra-low level, which promotes the formation and migration of oil-in-water emulsions and increases the efficiency of oil washing. Overall, ASP can not only activate discontinuous oil ganglia in the pores within the water flooding range, but also emulsify, decompose, and migrate the continuous residual oil in the expanded range outside the water flooding. The EOR of ASP is 38.0% higher than that of water flooding. Therefore, the ASP system is a new ternary composite flooding technology with low cost, technical feasibility, and broad application prospects.

Abstract:The application of conventional alkali, surfactant and polymer in alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding has exposed the inherent shortcomings of pollution and damage to reservoirs. Hence, finding new environmentally friendly alternatives is essential for the sustainable development of ASP flooding. In this paper, we proposed a novel ternary combination utilizing organic alkali polyetheramine, biosurfactant, and biopolymer as alternative chemical agents for ASP flooding. Specifically, the ASP system composed of polyetheramine D230, biosurfactant sophorolipid (SL) and biopolymer welan gum (WLG) exhibited excellent potential in improving oil recovery. The interfacial tension measurements proved that D230 could react with organic acids in crude oil to generate surface-active soaps, which cooperated with SL to reduce the oil–water interfacial tension to 10 −2 mN/m. The rheological measurements demonstrated that the addition of D230 could increase the viscosity of low concentration WLG solution, but this phenomenon gradually disappeared with the rise of WLG concentration. Even at higher WLG concentration, D230 only caused a slight decrease in system viscosity, which facilitated the improvement of sweep efficiency. Emulsification and contact angle measurements indicated that D230/SL blend had outstanding emulsifying ability and successfully altered the quartz surface from oil-wet to water-wet. Core flooding experiments and micromodel experiments showed that the D230/SL/WLG system significantly enhanced oil recovery by 22.66 %, which was attributed to the high viscosity, low interfacial tension, excellent wettability reversal and emulsifying abilities of the system. The economic benefit assessment indicated that this ASP system has the potential to be economic, rendering it profitable even during periods of low oil prices. Furthermore, the EC 50 value of 52,600 mg/L for D230/SL/WLG demonstrated its environmental friendliness.

Abstract:For over four decades, carbon dioxide (CO2) has been instrumental in enhancing oil extraction through advanced recovery techniques. One such method, water alternating gas (WAG) injection, while effective, grapples with limitations like gas channeling and gravity segregation. To tackle the aforementioned issues, this paper proposes an upgrade coupling method named alkaline-surfactant-polymer alternating gas (ASPAG). ASP flooding and CO2 are injected alternately into the reservoir to enhance the recovery of the WAG process. The uniqueness of this method lies in the fact that polymers could help profile modification, CO2 would miscible mix with oil, and alkaline surfactant would reduce oil–water interfacial tension (IFT). To analyze the feasibility of ASPAG, a couples model considering both gas flooding and ASP flooding processes is established by using the CMG-STARS (Version 2021) to study the performance of ASPAG and compare the recovery among ASPAG, WAG, and ASP flooding. Our research delved into the ASPAG's adaptability across reservoirs varying in average permeability, interlayer heterogeneity, formation rhythmicity, and fluid properties. Key findings include that ASPAG surpasses the conventional WAG in sweep and displacement efficiency, elevating oil recovery by 12–17%, and in comparison to ASP, ASPAG bolsters displacement efficiency, leading to a 9–11% increase in oil recovery. The primary flooding mechanism of ASPAG stems from the ASP slug's ability to diminish the interfacial tension, enhancing the oil and water mobility ratio, which is particularly efficient in medium-high permeability layers. Through sensitivity analysis, ASPAG is best suited for mid-high-permeability reservoirs characterized by low crude oil viscosity and a composite reverse sedimentary rhythm. This study offers invaluable insights into the underlying mechanisms and critical parameters that influence the alkaline-surfactant-polymer alternating gas method's success for enhanced oil recovery. Furthermore, it unveils an innovative strategy to boost oil recovery in medium-to-high-permeability reservoirs.

Abstract:Nonionic–anionic surfactants are expected to be applied in chemical flooding due to their important properties such as ultralow IFT values, good salt tolerance, and no chromatographic separation in porous media. In this study, a new type of nonionic–anionic–hydrophobic group structure surfactant N, N-dihydroxyethylalkylamide carboxylate (EAMC) was synthesized. The synergistic effects between petroleum sulfonate (KPS) and EAMC in reducing interfacial tension (IFT) and emulsification properties were studied. The influences of salt, alkali and Ca2+ on the IFTs of surfactant solutions were also investigated. One-dimensional core flooding experiments were used to characterize the enhanced oil recovery capability of the KPS and EAMC mixed system. The experimental results show that both EAMC and KPS have high interfacial activity and can reduce IFTs to about 0.01 mN/m order of magnitude against decane at optimized concentrations. The area occupied by the hydrophilic group of EAMC on the interface is smaller than that of its own hydrophobic group. The interfacial film formed by EAMC alone is relatively loose. The IFTs of KPS containing different structure petroleum sulfonates is affected by the difference in the adsorption rate of petroleum sulfonates on the interface, which shows that both the dynamic and equilibrium interfacial tensions can have the lowest values. However, the IFTs of the EAMC solutions against crude oil can be reduced to ultralow values because the mixed tight adsorption film is formed by EAMC and crude oil fraction molecules with synergistic effect. On the other hand, the KPS molecule has a hydrophobic part with large size and no synergism with crude oil fractions can be observed in the solutions containing only KPS. The combination of EAMC and KPS shows synergistic effect, namely ultralow IFT values, good emulsification properties, high alkali tolerance, and good salt and Ca2+ tolerance during a wide percentage range of EAMC. The best formula of EAMC and KPS system can be applied for EOR after polymer flooding. The studies in this paper are helpful for the design and application of a chemical flooding formula with nonionic–anionic–hydrophobic group structure surfactants.

Abstract:In the present study numerical simulation of sand pack flooding with alkali–surfactant–polymer for enhanced oil recovery has been studied using an advanced compositional simulator named STARS available from the Computer Modeling Group. The flooding experiment shows that the chemical formulations are able to recover additional oil more than28% with proper formulation. Therefore, the main motivation of the work is simulation and comparison of results. Different chemical slugs such as alkali, surfactant, and polymer were taken and their effects on water cut, oil cut, cumulative recovery and additional recovery were simulated by the software using experimental data. The results obtained using the simulator has been compared with the available sand packed flooding laboratory experimental data.

Abstract:Na 2 CO 3 was used together with surfactant and polymer to form the Alkaline/Surfactant/Polymer (ASP) flooding system. Interfacial tension (IFT) and emulsification of Dagang oil and chemical solutions were studied in the paper. The experiment results show that the ASP system can form super-low interfacial tension with crude oil and emulsified phase. The stability of the emulsion is enhanced by the Na 2 CO 3 , surfactant, and the soap generated at oil/water contact. Six core flooding experiments are conducted in order to investigate the influence of Na 2 CO 3 concentration on oil recovery. The results show the maximum oil recovery can be obtained with 0.3 wt% surfactant, 0.6 wt% Na 2 CO 3 , and 2000 mg/L polymer. In a heterogeneous reservoir, the ASP flooding could not enhance the oil recovery by reducing IFT until it reaches the critical viscosity, which indicates expanding the sweep volume is the premise for reducing IFT to enhance oil recovery. Reducing or removing the alkali from ASP system to achieve high viscosity will reduce oil recovery because of the declination of oil displacement efficiency. Weak base ASP alkali can ensure that the whole system with sufficient viscosity can start the medium and low permeability layers and enhance oil recovery even if the IFT only reaches 10 −2 mN/m.

Abstract:Aiming at deep profile control in water flooding reservoirs, a heterogeneous combination flooding system, composed of dispersed particle gel (DPG) and a zwitterionic surfactant (THSB), was developed. The mean particle diameter was adjusted and then the DPG morphology and diameter were characterized using a laser scanning, confocal microscope, and dynamic light scattering. The effects of DPG concentration, temperature, pH, and salinity on THSB interfacial tension (IFT) were investigated. A method for determining DPG concentration was proposed, and the dynamic retention and migration mechanisms of the particles were evaluated, using cores with different permeabilities. Finally, the oil displacement mechanism of the combination flooding system was explored through visual simulation experiments and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the particle diameter was 2.5 μm, that compared with a surfactant system, the IFT of the combination flooding system was relatively low, and that the temperature, pH, and NaCl content of solutions had little effect on THSB IFT. Since specific matching relationships between DPG particles and reservoir pore throats existed, the retention amount and injection pressure were improved with the increased core permeability. Visual simulation experiments revealed the oil recovery mechanism of the combination flooding system. This combination flooding system can be used in reservoirs under varied conditions, as the particle diameter can be adjusted on a case-by-case basis, and the THSB surfactant proved to be high-temperature resistant and high-salinity tolerant. The combination flooding system can be applied to deep profile control and oil displacement, in oil fields.

Abstract:Summary A laboratory study of the alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) process was conducted. It was found from phase-behavior studies that for a given synthetic surfactant and crude oil containing naph-thenic acids, optimal salinity depends only on the ratio of the moles of soap formed from the acids to the moles of synthetic surfactant present. Adsorption of anionic surfactants on carbonate surfaces is reduced substantially by sodium carbonate, but not by sodium hydroxide. The magnitude of the reduction with sodium carbonate decreases with increasing salinity. Particular attention was given to a surfactant blend of a pro-poxylated sulfate having a slightly branched C16–17 hydrocarbon chain and an internal olefin sulfonate. In contrast to alkyl/aryl sulfonates previously considered for EOR, alkaline solutions of this blend containing neither alcohol nor oil were single-phase micellar solutions at all salinities up to approximately optimal salinity with representative oils. Phase behavior with a west Texas crude oil at ambient temperature in the absence of alcohol was unusual in that colloidal material, perhaps another microemulsion having a higher soap content, was dispersed in the lower-phase microemulsion. Low interfacial tensions existed with the excess oil phase only when this material was present in sufficient amount in the spinning-drop device. Some birefringence was observed near and above optimal conditions. While this phase behavior is somewhat different from the conventional Winsor phase sequence, overall solubilization of oil and brine for this system was high, leading to low interfacial tensions over a wide salinity range and to excellent oil recovery in both dolomite and silica sandpacks. The sandpack experiments were performed with surfactant concentrations as low as 0.2 wt% and at a salinity well below optimal for the injected surfactant. It was necessary that sufficient polymer be present to provide adequate mobility control, and that salinity be below the value at which phase separation occurred in the polymer/surfactant solution. A 1D simulator was developed to model the process. By calculating transport of soap formed from the crude oil and injected surfactant separately, it showed that injection below optimal salinity was successful because a gradient in local soap-to-surfactant ratio developed during the process. This gradient increases robustness of the process in a manner similar to that of a salinity gradient in a conventional surfactant process. Predictions of the simulator were in excellent agreement with the sandpack results.

Abstract:Surfactant flooding is a traditional method to enhance oil recovery. The surfactant flooding experiment based on glass etching model allows researchers to observe directly how the remaining oil is displaced by surfactant through microscope, so as to explore the mechanism of surfactant enhanced oil recovery. However, microscopic experiments mostly stay at the level of physical experiments, and the operation of physical experiments is too complex and cumbersome. This study is the first to combine surfactant flooding experiment with numerical simulation in glass etching model. Firstly, based on the real pore and throat structure of the real low permeability reservoir core, the glass etching model was developed, and the micro-oil-water displacement experiment was carried out. Through microscopic observation and analysis, combined with testing and image processing technology, the effect of water flooding was quantitatively investigated. Then the surfactant flooding was carried out. Three surfactants were used for displacement. It was found that residual oil in pore network was greatly reduced. The recovery factor has been greatly improved. Finally, numerical simulation of water flooding and surfactant flooding based on micro-physical experiment was carried out. The results of numerical simulation were compared with the experimental results. It is found that the recovery factor and the form of residual oil are basically the same. By analyzing the results of numerical simulation of oil recovery, it is found that the extent of surfactant enhancing oil recovery is different under different interfacial tension. The results showed that the surfactant with interfacial tension of 0.22 mN/m has the highest ability to enhance oil recovery. This work provides a reference for surfactant selection in oilfield development. It can select the best surfactant according to the factors of time, efficiency and cost.

Abstract:Summary Mixtures of anionic/cationic surfactants have never been used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) for negatively charged sandstone reservoirs because of high adsorption. Recently, novel mixtures of anionic/cationic surfactants that produced low critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of 3.50×10–4 wt%, ultralow interfacial tension (IFT) of 10–4 mN/m, high oil solubilization of 23, and low adsorption of 0.27 mg/g sand were developed in the laboratory for a mature sandstone reservoir with characteristics of high temperature of 81°C, high water cut of 97.8%, high recovery factor of 53.3%, and low-acid oil of 0.021 mg/g potassium hydroxide (KOH). Coreflooding results indicated that alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding with a preslug of crosslinked polymer (CP) increased oil recovery by 24.2% of original oil in place (OOIP) over the waterflood under the optimal chemical formulation. Since January 2012, the first field application of ASP flooding in the world with highly efficient mixtures of anionic/cationic surfactants was performed for a high-temperature, high-water-cut mature sandstone reservoir to demonstrate the potential of the novel surfactant to recover residual oil from as high as 53.3% recovery factor of reserves. ASP slug and CP slug for conformance control were alternately injected. The water cut decreased from 97.9 to 90.2% and the estimated ultimate oil recovery can be increased by 14.2% of OOIP and yield up to 67.5% of OOIP.

Abstract:To improve the oil recovery efficiency of ASP (alkali-surfactant-polymer) flooding, lipopeptide surfactant was added into ASP to form a new system (LASP). Core flooding experiments and field pilots suggested that LASP can achieve better oil recovery with lower costs. To determine the synergistic effects of the LASP system, a series of pore-scale flooding experiments were performed to quantify the displacement and sweep efficiencies of the LASP system and its main components independently. The results suggested that the petroleum sulfonate tends to improve displacement efficiency (by 21.1%) and the polymer tends to widen the effective sweep area (by 14.2%). While lipopeptide improved both oil displacement efficiency (31.2%) and sweep efficiency (10.2%) depending on the oil emulsification. Their mixture, that is; LASP, reached a higher displacement (42.1%) and sweep efficiency (12.9%) that depended on synergistic effects between the components. For instance, the bio- and chemical surfactants and the polymer synergistically improved the stability and deformability of oil emulsion, which reduce flow resistance and then improve displacement efficiency. However, the throat-blocking mechanism, which expanded sweep area during lipopeptide flooding, no longer existed in the LASP system. Nevertheless, the LASP system can depend on high viscosity of polymer to effectively expand sweep area. Oil recovery in the LASP system is more than the sum of the mechanism of each component.

Abstract:Determining the optimal timing for subsequent water flooding in Alkali-Surfactant-Polymer (ASP) flooding is essential to maximizing both the technical and economic outcomes of oilfield blocks. This study identified eight critical parameters that influence the benefits of ASP flooding and established parameter ranges based on data from completed blocks and actual field measurements. The optimal timing for subsequent water flooding was determined by evaluating cumulative net profit variations throughout the ASP flooding lifecycle. Given the complexity and high-dimensional nature of evaluating multiple parameters across diverse blocks, a machine learning-driven optimization model was developed. This model enhances work efficiency by automating complex analyses. However, predictive uncertainties and limitations remain due to the variability in oilfield development and the potential for unpredictable changes in reservoir conditions, external market factors and so on, which may affect the model's results. The model was applied to six blocks in the Daqing oilfield currently in the chemical flooding phase, where injection schemes, such as extending the polymer slug, were adjusted according to the model's optimized results. These adjustments yielded an increase in cumulative net profit of 224.9 million CNY compared to the original scheme, with a potential total increase of 752.1 million CNY by the end of the flooding process.

Abstract:Abstract Chemical flooding technique of alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) has been successfully applied in China for sandstone reservoir. However, challenges to develop chemical EOR formulations without alkali are significant and unique for both sandstone and carbonate reservoir. On the one hand, it is very difficult to achieve ultra-low interfacial tension and good oil displacement effect without the help of alkali. On the other hand, the oil types, rock mineral compositions, rock surface property, matrix pore structure and orientation are all different for sandstone and carbonate reservoir. In fact, the ASP technologies successfully used in Daqing sandstone oilfield cannot be simply extrapolated to SP combination flooding and carbonate reservoir. The key technology is development low cost and high efficiency surfactant and polymer. In this paper, the new surfactant/polymer formulation has been developed, and show good properties for both sandstone and carbonate reservoir. The novel sulfobetaine with intellectual property has been obtained with raw material of cheap fatty acid, and the carbon-carbon double bond can improve the solubility and emulsifying property.The star-shaped polymer has been developed, and could effectively increase the rigidity of polymer molecular chain and the regularity of molecular structure, which can make the curliness of polymer chain become difficult, and increase the revolving hydraulic radius of molecular chain.The new surfactant/polymer formulation had wide adaptability and could achieve ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT, less than 1.0×10−2mN/m) in different sandstone and carbonate reservoir conditions, and the temperature were from 45 ℃ to 90℃, and the salinity were from 4,500 mg/L to 100,000 mg/L.The SP system has good long term stability at different reservoir conditions. The IFT results were in the range from 10−4mN/m to 10−3mN/m with duration of 180 days, and the retention rates of viscosity were more than 90%.The new surfactant/polymer formulation had good emulsifying capacity, and emulsion Winsor III was observed. It could change the wettability from oil wet to water wet, and had good stripping film capacity.The alkali-free SP formulation showed good oil displacement effect. After water flooding, it could increase oil recovery 21.5% (OOIP) in Daqing oilfield in China for sandstone reservoir; for carbonate reservoir, it could increase oil recovery 23.42% (OOIP) in the oilfield of Middle East. This paper presents the new alkali-free surfactant/polymer combination flooding green technology, which provide promising chemical EOR technique for both sandstone and carbonate reservoir.

Abstract:Biological and chemical compound flooding systems have excellent performance and broad application prospects in enhanced oil recovery. In this study, the most efficient and environmentally friendly type of bio-chemical compound alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding system, namely the ASP-PST85, is constructed with Na2CO3, petroleum sulfonate (NPS), biosurfactant surfactin, polyacrylamide, and Tween-85. The interfacial activity, dilution stability, adsorption stability, aging stability, temperature stability, and emulsification property of the ASP-PST85 system are evaluated. The results show that the range of interfacial tension of 10(-4 )mN/m between the ASP-PST85 system and crude oil is significantly expanded compared to that of the original ASP system, which is referred to as the ASP-PS system. Simultaneously, the emulsion and adsorption stability are also significantly improved. The microfluidic measurement results show that the ASP-PST85 system reaches the saturated adsorption of surfactant at the oil-water interface faster than the ASP-PS system, probably due to its higher emulsion stability. This study provides a reference for the construction of high-performance and bio-chemical compound flooding systems, providing a theoretical and methodological basis to obtain basic data of rapid adsorption kinetics at the oil-water interface.

Abstract:In recent years, field test and industrialized application of ASP (alkaline/surfactant/polymer) flooding has been carried out in oilfields, which has obtained an obvious effect on increasing oil and decreasing water and good economic efficiency. However, due to the large proportion of alkali in the ASP flooding system, there are problems such as severe scaling and high cost during field tests, which restrict the promotion of ASP flooding. In order to reduce the amount of alkali used, achieve the goal of reducing scaling and costs, and meanwhile improve emulsification performance while maintaining interfacial activity, a multicomponent emulsion flooding system was developed by combining emulsifier HEFR2 with petroleum sulfonate and sacrificial agent LSCP1 with NaOH.Through laboratory experiments, the water extraction rate, particle diameter, Tsi value, and interfacial activity of the multicomponent emulsion flooding system were tested under different conditions. The results show that when the mass ratio of petroleum sulfonate to emulsifier HEFR2 is between 3:1 and 5:1, and the mass ratio of sacrificial agent LSCP1 to NaOH is between 3:1 and 7:1, the multicomponent emulsion flooding system can maintain good emulsification stability and interfacial activity. The multicomponent emulsion flooding system significantly reduces the amount of alkali used, and the cost of chemical agents is 11% lower than that of the ASP flooding system. At the same time, it achieves the goal of improving the stability of emulsifiers, maintains interfacial activity and reduces costs. This technology has broad application prospects.
