Abstract:In this chapter, the author begins to question the polarity of sanity and madness at the heart of Western psychiatry and to reflect on issues of power and the counselling relationship. Mainly drawing on psychodynamic theories, which link disintegration anxiety to failures in the early mother–infant relationship.
