Abstract:The isothermal oxidation behavior of Fe-10Al, Fe-15Al, Fe-20Al alloys with and without the addition of 0.1 at% Y was studied at 800 degrees C under 1 x 10(5) Pa of flowing pure O-2 for 24 h. The oxidation of three Fe-Al alloys can be divided into transient state and steady state oxidation stages. The oxidation of each stage is approximately in accordance with the parabolic law. The addition of 0.1 at% Y changes the oxidation behavior obviously and leads to a significant increase of the weight gain of Fe-10Al and Fe-15Al. The scale grown on Fe-10Al is much thicker and more complicated than that grown on Fe-20Al, which is composed of an exclusive thin layer of Al2O3 protective film. Due to the formation of a large number of nodules, the scales grown on Fe-15Al cannot provide full protection for the alloy. Scale microstructure of the three Fe-Al-0.1Y alloys is similar to their corresponding Fe-Al alloys. However, nodules with very small size still appear on the surface of Fe-20Al-0.1Y alloy. The critical Al concentration to form an exclusive Al2O3 protective layer for Fe-Al binary alloy is on the borderline between 15 at%-20 at%. For Fe-Al-0.1Y alloy, the presence of 20 at% Al is not enough to inhibit the growth of nodules. (C) 2020 Chinese Society of Rare Earths. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Current transition alumina catalysts require the presence of significant amounts of toxic, environmentally deleterious dopants for their stabilization. Herein, we report a simple and novel strategy to engineer transition aluminas to withstand aging temperatures up to 1200°C without inducing the transformation to low-surface-area α-Al2O3 and without requiring dopants. By judiciously optimizing the abundance of dominant facets and the interparticle distance, we can control the temperature of the phase transformation from θ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3 and the specific surface sites on the latter. These specific surface sites provide favorable interactions with supported metal catalysts, leading to improved metal dispersion and greatly enhanced catalytic activity for hydrocarbon oxidation. First-Principles Predictions and in Situ Experimental Validation of Alumina Atomic Layer Deposition on Metal Surfaces

Abstract:The atomic layer deposition (ALD) of metal oxides on metal surfaces is of great importance in applications such as microelectronics, corrosion resistance, and catalysis. In this work, Al2O3 ALD using trimethylaluminum (TMA) and water was investigated on Pd, Pt, Ir, and Cu surfaces by combining in situ quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), quadrupole mass spectroscopy (QMS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These studies revealed that TMA undergoes dissociative chemisorption to form monomethyl aluminum (AlCH3*, the asterisk designates a surface species) on both Pd and Pt, which transform into Al(OH)(3)* during the subsequent water exposure. Furthermore, the AlCH3* can further dissociate into Al* and CH3* on stepped Pt(211). Additional DFT calculations predicted that Al2O3 ALD should proceed on Ir following a similar mechanism but not on Cu due to the endothermicity for TMA dissociation. These predictions were confirmed by in situ QCM, QMS, and STM measurements. Our combined theoretical and experimental study also found that the preferential decoration of low-coordination metal sites, especially after high temperature treatment, correlates with the differences in free energy between Al2O3 ALD on the (111) and stepped (211) surfaces. These insights into Al2O3 growth on metal surfaces can guide the future design of advanced metal/metal oxide catalysts with greater durability by protecting the metal against sintering and dissolution and enhanced selectivity by blocking low-coordination metal sites while leaving (111) facets available for catalysis.

Abstract:Developing alloys capable of withstanding high temperatures is crucial for modern engineering applications. Introducing multi-component alloys (MPEAs) has provided new strategies for designing high-temperature alloys. We have successfully prepared a series of AlCr x FeNi lightweight MPEAs in this study. The oxidation behavior of AlC x FeNi lightweight at 800 °C was investigated systematically through a combination of experimental methods and first-principles calculations. The microstructure characterization before oxidation reveals that the lightweight AlCr x FeNi MPEAs consist of BCC and B2 phases. In contrast, the AlCrFeNi alloy exhibited a microstructure characterized by typical eutectic features. Oxidation tests indicate that all three alloys exhibited oxidation kinetics following a parabolic law, with oxidation rates decreasing as the Cr content increased. Post-oxidation microstructural characterization revealed an oxide layer composed primarily of Al 2 O 3 and Cr 2 O 3 on the alloy surfaces. First-principles calculations provided insights into the microscopic mechanisms underlying the oxidation process. The results demonstrate that the adsorption energy of the O atom at the top position of the Cr atom is significantly lower than that of the Al atom at the top position. Electronic structure analysis shows that the Cr-O covalent bonding is stronger than the Al-O covalent bonding, which accounts for the oxidation resistance improvement as the Cr element content increases. This study advances MPEAs for high-temperature environments by elucidating these microscopic mechanisms.

Abstract:In the present work, a physical model has been developed to predict the growth of Al2O3 scale, which involves the thickening of metastable transient θ-Al2O3 phase and finally thermodynamically stable α-Al2O3 phase, accompanied by the concurrent θ→α-Al2O3 phase transformation. Based on nucleation and growth theory, the phase transition kinetics and alumina growth were modeled for both isothermal and continuous heating paths. Using this model, the phase transformation kinetics, evolution of grain size and Al2O3 scale thickness can be predicted for a given thermal path. A new scaling parameter has been proposed that quantitatively reveals the relative significance of nucleation and grain growth to the overall phase transformation kinetics. Predictions based on the model are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Limitations of the model are also presented and discussed.

Abstract:MoAlB is considered the most promising material for oxidation resistance among the MAB phase family. However, the anisotropic oxidation mechanism at the atomic scale has not been fully investigated, which may limit its practical applications. In this work the anisotropic oxidation mechanism of MoAlB was first explored through systematic theoretical calculations, based on which an effective strategy to enhance its oxidation resistance was identified and successfully implemented in the experimental work. The theoretical calculation revealed that the anisotropic oxidation of MoAlB was primarily related to the difference in free energy of surface oxidation reactions due to the degrees of electron interaction localization of O-Al bonding. A series of candidates of various transition metal-doped MoAlB materials were then designed to improve the weaker surface of MoAlB for oxidation resistance enhancement. Among these candidates, Zr-doped MoAlB was selected to further evaluate the effects of doping on the anisotropic oxidation through the electronic structure and Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Finally, Zr-doped MoAlB was experimentally synthesized to validate the theoretical design. Non-isothermal oxidation kinetics analysis indicated that Zr doping can enhance the oxidation resistance of MoAlB by promoting the formation of a protective oxide scale and increasing the formation activation energy of volatile products, which finally reduced the thickness of the oxidation scale on the surface after isothermal oxidation of the bulk material. This work not only contributes to an in-depth understanding of the oxidation mechanisms in MoAlB but also presents a new approach to enhance its oxidation resistance and other Al containing ceramic materials beyond MAB phases.

Abstract:Abstract Structural alloys applied at high temperatures rely on an external dense layer of oxide scale for protection. As some reactive alloy components are selectively oxidized internally, understanding how these dispersed metal oxide particles reach the surface to form a protective scale—the so-called internal to external oxidation transition—is crucial for designing these alloys. While the literature is replete with experimental studies on oxidation of alloys, there is a lack of computational studies in this realm due to the complex nature of coupled reaction and diffusion processes in multicomponent multi-phase alloy systems. In this work, we apply a recently developed phase-field model to simulate the oxidation processes under different compositions and nucleation scenarios to gain insights into how a continuous oxide scale can be established. The results show that while alloy composition is critical for internal to external oxidation transition, the oxide nuclei size, shape and distribution also have significant impact on the transition kinetics.

Microstructural evolution and high-temperature oxidation mechanisms of a titanium aluminide based alloy

Abstract:Oxidation resistance of titanium aluminide (TiAl) based alloys is a fundamental aspect for the high-temperature structural applications such as in the advanced hypersonic aircraft engines and gas turbines. The aim of this study was to identify oxidation kinetics and mechanisms through detailed microstructural characterization of a newly-developed Ti-44Al-4Nb-1.5Cr-0.5Mo-0.1B-0.1Y alloy via focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The alloy consisting mainly of γ-TiAl/α2-Ti3Al lamellar structure exhibited a superior oxidation resistance at 700 °C, and followed parabolic oxidation kinetics at 800 °C and 900 °C. The observed multi-layered scale structure consisted of TiO2, Al2O3-rich, Al2O3+TiO2, H-Ti2AlN+Al2O3+α2-Ti3Al, Z-Ti5Al3O2+AlNb2+Laves-(Ti,Nb)Cr2, and H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae from the outside to inside after high-temperature oxidation. The γ-TiAl/α2-Ti3Al lamellae near the scale/substrate interface were first transformed into H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae, with orientation relationships identified as ( 0001 ) α 2 / / ( 0001 ) T i 2 A l N , ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) α 2 / / ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) T i 2 A l N and [ 1 2 ¯ 10 ] α 2 / / [ 1 2 ¯ 10 ] T i 2 A l N . The H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae were then transformed into a metastable Z-Ti5Al3O2 phase at the scale/substrate interface. The Z-phase was decomposed to Ti3Al and Al2O3 as the scale/substrate interface moved inwardly. Ti3Al reacted further with oxygen and nitrogen to form Ti2AlN, which was finally oxidized to form TiO2 and α-Al2O3. A Nb-rich layer was present beneath the scale along with the formation of AlNb2 and Laves phase, and the doping effect of Nb to suppress the diffusion of oxygen occurred mainly in the TiO2+Al2O3 compound layer. The results obtained in this study would pave the way for the development of advanced oxidation-resistant TiAl-based materials for high-temperature applications.

Abstract:Complex multi-element alloys are gaining prominence for structural applications, supplementing steels, and superalloys. Understanding the impact of each element on alloy surfaces due to oxidation is vital in maintaining material integrity. This study investigates oxidation mechanisms in these alloys using a model five-element equiatomic CoCrFeNiMn alloy, in a controlled oxygen environment. The oxidation-induced surface changes correlate with each element's interactive tendencies with the environment, guided by thermodynamics. Initial oxidation stages follow atomic size and redox potential, with the latter becoming dominant over time, causing composition inversion. The study employs in-situ atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure techniques to elucidate the oxidation process and surface oxide structure evolution. Our findings deconvolute the mechanism for compositional and structural changes in the oxide film and will pave the way for a predictive design of complex alloys with improved resistance to oxidation under extreme conditions.
Modelling the onset of oxide formation on metal surfaces from first principles

Abstract:The formation of ultrathin oxide layers on metal surfaces is a non-thermally-activated process which takes place spontaneously at very low temperatures within nanoseconds. This paper reports mechanistic details of the initial oxidation of bare metal surfaces, in particular Al(111) and TiN(001), as obtained by means of first-principles molecular dynamics modelling within the Density-Functional Theory. It is shown that the reactions of bare metal surfaces with O2 molecules take place according to a 'hot-atom' dissociative mechanism which is triggered by the filling of the sigma-star antibonding molecular orbital and is characterised by a sudden release of a large amount of kinetic energy. This released energy provides a driving force for metal/oxygen place-exchange processes which are responsible for the onset of oxide formation at virtually 0 K and at oxygen coverages well below 1 monolayer (ML). Further simulations of the oxidation reactions reveal that a disordered ultrathin oxide forms on Al(111), whereas a rather ordered structure develops on TiN(001) following a selective oxidation process which leaves clusters of Ti vacancies in the TiN lattice underneath the oxide layer.

Abstract:The development of alloys with high antioxidation performance is limited by the ambiguous details of the oxidation mechanism. Here, based on the structures of internal oxides detected by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, a hybrid method combining first-principles calculation, climb image nudged elastic band method and quasi-harmonic Debye model has been implemented to explain the oxidation mechanism with an emphasis on the origin of delamination and cracking. The results showed that the delamination of oxides corresponds to the acceleration of diffusion of Cr element caused by lamellar structures. The reduction in the cracking occurrence at high temperature mainly results from the smaller bulk modulus of oxides. Furthermore, the stronger chemical bonds promoted by lamellar structures also correspond to the higher cracking resistance.

Abstract:The MAX phase, Nb4AlC3, has been identified as a potential candidate for high-temperature structural materials, but its inherent limitations, including poor oxidation resistance, low Young's modulus, and low hardness, have hindered its widespread application. To address these fundamental questions, in this paper, the oxidation mechanism of Nb4AlC3 with and without the influence of transition metal (TM) elements is thoroughly investigated through systematic quantum mechanical calculations. The investigation considers six possible O doping sites in the Nb–Al/C layer, and the calculation results reveal a tendency for O to occupy the hexahedral Site-Ⅱ. This can be mainly attributed to the strong charge interaction between O and Nb, Al. Furthermore, the study explores the impact of all “M" site TM elements on the compound's oxidation resistance. Zr and Mo are identified as representatives that can enhance or weaken the oxidation resistance, respectively. Subsequently, the effects of Zr doping on the phase stability, mechanical properties, lattice thermal conductivity, and electronic properties of Nb4AlC3 were examined. The findings reveal that all (Nb1-xZrx) 4AlC3 compounds are thermodynamically stable, elastically stable, and brittle materials with good thermal conductivity. Among them i, Young's modulus and hardness increase the most when the Zr content is low (0.125) compared to the parent phase, which aligns with the available experimental results. And the system with 0.125 Zr content has the highest high-temperature stability (1300 K). Therefore, as expected, Zr doping can improve the comprehensive properties of Nb4AlC3 to some extent.

Abstract:Twin boundaries and stacking faults (TBs&SFs) in thermally grown oxide scales can deteriorate the oxidation resistance of engineering alloys and it is challenging to inhibit them. Herein, we find that introducing a coherent NiO layer can significantly reduce the TBs&SFs density in.-Al2O3 scales on Ni-Al alloys and thereby enhance the oxidation resistance. Importantly, such a NiO layer can be spontaneously formed on the surface of a nanograined Ni-7 wt%Al alloy, and its oxidation resistance is three times that of the ss-NiAl intermetallics. This provides a novel strategy to develop advanced oxidation resistant materials for high temperature application.
In Situ Observation of Temperature-Dependent Atomistic and Mesoscale Oxidation Mechanisms of Aluminum Nanoparticles

Abstract:Oxidation is a universal process causing metals’ corrosion and degradation. While intensive researches have been conducted for decades, the detailed atomistic and mesoscale mechanisms of metal oxidation are still not well understood. Here using in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (E-TEM) with atomic resolution, we revealed systematically the oxidation mechanisms of aluminum from ambient temperature to ~ 600 °C. It was found that an amorphous oxide layer formed readily once Al was exposed to air at room temperature. At ~ 150 °C, triangle-shaped Al2O3 lamellas grew selectively on gas/solid (oxygen/amorphous oxide layer) interface, however, the thickness of the oxide layer slowly increased mainly due to the inward diffusion of oxygen. As the temperature further increased, partial amorphous-to-crystallization transition was observed on the amorphous oxide film, resulting in the formation of highly dense nano-cracks in the oxide layer. At ~ 600 °C, fast oxidation process was observed. Lamellas grew into terraces on the oxide/gas interface, indicating that the high temperature oxidation is controlled by the outward diffusion of Al. Single or double/multi-layers of oxide nucleated at the corners of the terraces, forming dense γ’-Al2O3, which is a metastable oxide structure but may be stabilized at nanoscale.

Abstract:The boosting effect of Cr on the growth of the protective alumina scale on Fe-Al alloys is investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Using low oxygen pressure the surface chemistry of the alloys is monitored starting from the first moments of oxidation. Chromium effect on the Fe-Al surface-bulk exchange is clearly detected by analyzing the measured surface concentrations within the atomic concentration models. Previous ab initio calculations agree well with the present experiments.

Abstract:Al2O3 and Ga2O3 exhibit numerous crystal phases with distinct stabilities and material properties. However, the phase transitions among those materials are typically undesirable in industrial applications, making it imperative to elucidate the transition mechanisms between these phases. The configurational similarities between Al2O3 and Ga2O3 allow for the replication of phase transition pathways between these materials. In this study, we investigate the potential phase transition pathway of alumina from the theta-phase to the alpha-phase using stochastic surface walking global optimization based on global neural network potentials, while extending an existing Ga2O3 phase transition path. Through this exploration, we identify a novel single-atom migration pseudomartensitic mechanism, which combines martensitic transformation with single-atom diffusion. This discovery offers valuable insights for experimental endeavors aimed at stabilizing alumina in transitional phases.

The physical and chemical properties of micron-aluminum particle were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, laser particle size analyzer, X-ray diffractometer and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer. The thermal oxidation characteristics of the sample were studied by thermal analyzer. The experimental results showed that the initial oxide thickness of the sample was about 3.96 nm, and the calculated values of the specific surface area and the active aluminum content obtained by the established mathematical model were in good agreement with the measured values. The thermal oxidation process of the sample was divided into three stages. When the temperature rose to 1100 °C, the thermal oxidation efficiency of the sample reached 98.55%. With the increase in treatment temperature, dramatic crystalline changes occurred on the surface of the sample: amorphous alumina—γ-Al 2 O 3 , α-Al 2 O 3 , and the oxide layer thickness increased from 3.96 to 5.72 nm and 31.56 nm up to 320.15 nm. When the temperature reached 700 °C, the outer surface of the oxide layer contained a small amount of α-Al 2 O 3 , while the interior consisted of a large amount of γ-Al 2 O 3 , indicating that the conversion of γ-Al 2 O 3 to α-Al 2 O 3 occurred from the inside out.

Abstract:Aluminum nanopowders, oxidized at different temperatures using thermogravimetric analyses performed in high resolution mode, are characterized in terms of morphology, structure and microstructure. The particle structure is modeled via geometrical considerations that enable the calculation of the variation of specific surface area during oxidation. A two-step oxidation scenario is proposed. In the early oxidation stage, that is, for temperatures up to 650 °C where a pseudoplateau is reached, the oxidation, which occurs by diffusion of oxygen or aluminum through the alumina layer, leads to a core–shell structure. At higher temperatures, that is, above the melting point of aluminum, outward diffusion of aluminum through the oxide shell is controlling the reaction rate. The reaction interface is then located at the external surface and voids are formed inside the particles. This result is confirmed by energy filtered electron micrographs that allow distinguishing a thin metallic aluminum layer outside the alumina shell. This suggests that the migration of aluminum toward the surface of the particles is faster than the oxidation. Some insights on the nucleation process during the crystallization of liquid aluminum are also proposed which are related to the particle microstructure: heterogeneous nucleation is proposed to govern the crystallization of liquid aluminum and to give a signature of the alumina layer structural state.

Abstract:The process of high-temperature oxidation of multicomponent multiphase HP40NbTi alloy at 1150°C with duration of up to 500 hours in air is studied experimentally at the micro level using SEM and x-ray mapping. It is shown that the process occurs under the influence of various interrelated mechanisms. The changes in the composition and structure of the surface multilayer scale and of the subsurface diffusion zone in the alloy after oxidation of various durations are studied consistently. It is demonstrated that after a long-term exposure, conditional equilibrium is established in the alloy subsurface area; the formation of scale and the internal oxidation deplete the diffusion zone of chromium and silicon. This is compensated by the diffusion of Cr, Ni and Fe from the bulk of the metal to the surface. The process slows down with time due to the increase in the depth of the diffusion zone and formation of a "barrier" layer of silicon oxides.
