Abstract:With the rapid development of the electronics industry, smart wearable electronics and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have attracted tremendous interest. However, it is still a great challenge to maintain stable performance after damage. Herein, we prepare a super-stretchable and self-healing hydrogel composite with EMI shielding performance by the in situ polymerization of the acrylamide (AAm) and N-acryloyl-11-aminoundecanoic acid (A-11) in the silver nanowires (AgNWs) aerogel with cellular structure. Benefiting the continuous three-dimensional AgNWs network, the hydrogel composite has high electrical conductivity (83 S/cm), outstanding resistance-strain response of more than 800% tensile strain, and exceptional EMI effectiveness (SE) of 66 dB in X-band, capable of monitoring human motions as a wearable sensor. Moreover, the reversible hydrophobic association and hydrogen bonding interactions endow the hydrogel composite with excellent self-healing capability (EMI SE healing efficiency of 90%). The healed hydrogel composite can still serve as a sensor to respond rapidly and steadily to human motions. The super-stretchable and self-healing hydrogel composite holds great promise for smart wearable electronics and EMI shielding.

Abstract:Wearable and implantable devices require conductive, stretchable and biocompatible materials. However, obtaining composites that simultaneously fulfil these requirements is challenging due to a trade-off between conductivity and stretchability. Here, we report on Ag–Au nanocomposites composed of ultralong gold-coated silver nanowires in an elastomeric block-copolymer matrix. Owing to the high aspect ratio and percolation network of the Ag–Au nanowires, the nanocomposites exhibit an optimized conductivity of 41,850 S cm−1 (maximum of 72,600 S cm−1). Phase separation in the Ag–Au nanocomposite during the solvent-drying process generates a microstructure that yields an optimized stretchability of 266% (maximum of 840%). The thick gold sheath deposited on the silver nanowire surface prevents oxidation and silver ion leaching, making the composite biocompatible and highly conductive. Using the nanocomposite, we successfully fabricate wearable and implantable soft bioelectronic devices that can be conformally integrated with human skin and swine heart for continuous electrophysiological recording, and electrical and thermal stimulation.

Abstract:Flexible conductive materials and flexible electronic devices are driving the development of the next generation of cutting-edge wearable electronics. However, the existing hydrogel-based flexible conductive materials have limited tensile capacity, low toughness, and poor anti-fatigue performance, resulting in narrow sensing area and insufficient durability. In this paper, a conductive nanocomposite hydrogel with high ductility, toughness, and fatigue resistance is prepared by combining silver coated copper (Ag@Cu) nanoparticles with gelatin followed by one-step immersion in sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) solution. The salting-out of gelatin in Na2SO4 solution greatly improve the mechanical properties of this gelatin-based hydrogel. The uniform distribution of Ag@Cu nanoparticles inside the whole hydrogel endow the composite hydrogel with excellent electrical conductivity (1.35 S m−1). In addition, it displayed high and stable tensile strain sensitivity over a wide strain range (gauge factor = 2.08). Therefore, the Ag@Cu-Gel hydrogel is sensitive and stable enough to be successfully utilized as flexible wearable sensor for detecting human motion signals in real time, such as bending of human joints, swallowing, and throat vocalization. Furthermore, this hydrogel is also suitable for application as electronic skin for bionic robots. The above results demonstrate the promising application of Ag@Cu-Gel hydrogel for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogel-based flexible wearable sensor is considered as one of the best candidates for next-generation flexible wearable devices due to their flexibility, stretchability, and biocompatibility. However, its low sensitivity and single sensory function had limited its applications in emerging flexible wearable devices. Inspired by human neurons, the ultralong silver nanowires were combined with modified carbon black nanoparticles, and the composite conductive material (AgNWs/CB-OH) was utilized in combination with poly(vinyl alcohol)/tannic acid/poly(acrylamide) (PVA/TA/PAM) composite hydrogel to improve the conductivity of the composite conductive hydrogel and the sensitivity of the conductive hydrogel-based flexible wearable sensor via imitating the structure of neurons. Benefitting from the neuron-inspired structure of the composite conductive hydrogel, when a bit of composite conductive materials was added into the hydrogel (similar to 2.65 wt%), the conductivity of the composite conductive hydrogel was enhanced obviously, and the obtained composite conductive hydrogel-based flexible wearable sensor possessed high sensitivity (GF(max) = 68.64, S-max = 0.229 kPa(-1)), flexibility, stability (similar to 300 cycles), remoldability, and strain/pressure sensitivity. It could sensitively and stably detect human activity (e.g., finger bending, wrist bending, elbow bending, knee bending, mouth opening, making a fist, talking, walking, and jumping), demonstrating that the composite conductive hydrogel-based flexible wearable sensor is an ideal material for applications of full-range human bodily motion detection.
Highly Conductive and Stretchable Hydrogel Nanocomposite Using Whiskered Gold Nanosheets for Soft Bioelectronics

Abstract:The low electrical conductivity of conductive hydrogels limits their applications as soft conductors in bioelectronics. This low conductivity originates from the high water content of hydrogels, which impedes facile carrier transport between conductive fillers. This study presents a highly conductive and stretchable hydrogel nanocomposite comprising whiskered gold nanosheets. A dry network of whiskered gold nanosheets is fabricated and then incorporated into the wet hydrogel matrices. The whiskered gold nanosheets preserve their tight interconnection in hydrogels despite the high water content, providing a high-quality percolation network even under stretched states. Regardless of the type of hydrogel matrix, the gold-hydrogel nanocomposites exhibit a conductivity of ≈520 S cm-1 and a stretchability of ≈300% without requiring a dehydration process. The conductivity reaches a maximum of ≈3304 S cm-1 when the density of the dry gold network is controlled. A gold-adhesive hydrogel nanocomposite, which can achieve conformal adhesion to moving organ surfaces, is fabricated for bioelectronics demonstrations. The adhesive hydrogel electrode outperforms elastomer-based electrodes in in vivo epicardial electrogram recording, epicardial pacing, and sciatic nerve stimulation.

Abstract:Hydrogels that have a capability to provide mechanical modulus matching between time-dynamic curvilinear tissues and bioelectronic devices have been considered tissue-interfacing ionic materials for stably sensing physiological signals and delivering feedback actuation in skin-inspired healthcare systems. These functionalities are totally different from those of elastomers with low ionic conductivity and higher stiffness. Despite such remarkable progress, their low conductivity remains limited in transporting electrical charges to internal or external terminals without undesired information loss, potentially leading to an unstable biotic–abiotic interfaces in the wearable electronics. Here, we report a soft stretchable conductive hydrogel composite consisting of alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyacrylamide, and silver flakes. This composite was fabricated via sol–gel transition. In particular, the phase stability and low dynamic modulus rates of the conductive hydrogel were confirmed through an oscillatory rheological characterization. In addition, our conductive hydrogel showed maximal tensile strain (≈400%), a low deformations of cyclic loading (over 100 times), low resistance (≈8.4 Ω), and a high gauge factor (≈241). These stable electrical and mechanical properties allowed our composite hydrogel to fully support the operation of a light-emitting diode demonstration under mechanical deformation. Based on such durable performance, we successfully measured the electromyogram signals without electrical malfunction even in various motions.

Abstract:The development of wearable electronic devices for human health monitoring requires materials with high mechanical performance and sensitivity. In this study, we present a novel transparent tissue-like ionogel-based wearable sensor based on silver nanowire-reinforced ionogel nanocomposites, P(AAm-co-AA) ionogel-Ag NWs composite. The composite exhibits a high stretchability of 605% strain and a moderate fracture stress of about 377 kPa. The sensor also demonstrates a sensitive response to temperature changes and electrostatic adsorption. By encapsulating the nanocomposite in a polyurethane transparent film dressing, we address issues such as skin irritation and enable multidirectional stretching. Measuring resistive changes of the ionogel nanocomposite in response to corresponding strain changes enables its utility as a highly stretchable wearable sensor with excellent performance in sensitivity, stability, and repeatability. The fabricated pressure sensor array exhibits great proficiency in stress distribution, capacitance sensing, and discernment of fluctuations in both external electric fields and stress. Our findings suggest that this material holds promise for applications in wearable and flexible strain sensors, temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and actuators.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels with tunable multifunctionality show great potential in wearable smart devices. In this work, inspired by the nano-structured architecture strategy and natural mussel adhesive mechanism, a conductive hydrogel (AgPMP hydrogel) was fabricated through facile direct in-situ polymerization. Silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and polydopamine (PDA) chains were integrated into the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AM)) gel matrix, with activated PNIPAM microgels (MGs) serving as nano-crosslinkers. The overall internal structure of the hydrogel presented a heterogeneous cross-linked mesh-like structure with numerous irregular wrinkles. The AgPMP hydrogel demonstrated significantly enhanced mechanical strength, achieving a remarkable stretchability of 1140% attributed to the nano-microstructured architecture built by AM-based network, nano-crosslinkers and Ag NWs. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect of PDA and Ag NWs, the hydrogel exhibited impressive photothermal antibacterial activity. Meanwhile, in the presence of abundant active catechol groups, this hydrogel possessed adequate tissue-adhesive and self-healing abilities as well as good antioxidant property. Notably, the AgPMP hydrogel exhibited outstanding strain-sensitive conductivity. The resultant strain sensor owned high sensitivity with a guage factor (GF) up to 8.35 at strain of 250%. The stable response signals during continuous and gradual cycling proved its electrical durability and stability. Combined with the great merits of above performance, this sensor holds great promise for detecting huaman movements. The relative resistance change ranged from 16% to 64% as the finger bending angle changed from 30° to 90°. Thanks to its simple fabrication process, this multifunctional conductive hydrogel is expected to have widespread potential applications in tissue engineering, soft electronic skin and human-health monitoring.

Abstract:In recent years, conductive hydrogels have made remarkable progress in the field of simulating human skin because of their good inherent properties. However, developing a hydrogel that combines high mechanical strength, satisfactory ionic conductivity and extensive adhesion to a variety of substrates remains a challenge. Herein, we report a double network composite hydrogel using dopa methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, methacrylatoethyl trimethylammonium chloride, and acrylic acid. The hydrogel has a tensile strength of similar to 66.1 kPa, an elongation-at-break of 240%, a high ionic conductivity of 10.74 x 10(-4) S/cm, good antibacterial effect against Escherichia coil and Staphylococcus aureus, and extensive adhesion to both polar and non-polar surfaces. The natural cellulose nanofibers have a synergistic effect on enhancing the mechanical strength of ionic conductive hydrogels. In addition, the wearable skin sensor based on the hydrogel has the characteristics of high sensitivity, wide sensing range, good stability, high precision and good repeatability for human movement detection and recognition. Based on this simple strategy, multifunctional hydrogels with high mechanical strength, adhesion, antibacterial properties, high electrical signal sensitivity and good biocompatibility were obtained, which has potential application prospects in the field of wearable devices.

Abstract:The development of various flexible and stretchable materials has attracted interest for promising applications in biomedical engineering and electronics industries. This interest in wearable electronics, stretchable circuits, and flexible displays has created a demand for stable, easily manufactured, and cheap materials. However, the construction of flexible and elastic electronics, on which commercial electronic components can be mounted through simple and cost-effective processing, remains challenging. We have developed a nanocomposite of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer. To achieve uniform distributions of CNTs within the polymer, an optimized dispersion process was developed using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and methyl-terminated PDMS in combination with ultrasonication. After vaporizing the IPA, various shapes and sizes can be easily created with the nanocomposite, depending on the mold. The material provides high flexibility, elasticity, and electrical conductivity without requiring a sandwich structure. It is also biocompatible and mechanically stable, as demonstrated by cytotoxicity assays and cyclic strain tests (over 10,000 times). We demonstrate the potential for the healthcare field through strain sensor, flexible electric circuits, and biopotential measurements such as EEG, ECG, and EMG. This simple and cost-effective fabrication method for CNT/PDMS composites provides a promising process and material for various applications of wearable electronics.

Abstract:Recently, hydrogels have attracted great attention because of their unique properties, including stretchability, self-adhesion, transparency, and biocompatibility. They can transmit electrical signals for potential applications in flexible electronics, human-machine interfaces, sensors, actuators, et al. MXene, a newly emerged two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, is an ideal candidate for wearable sensors, benefitting from its surface's negatively charged hydrophilic nature, biocompatibility, high specific surface area, facile functionalization, and high metallic conductivity. However, stability has been a limiting factor for MXene-based applications, and fabricating MXene into hydrogels has been proven to significantly improve their stability. The unique and complex gel structure and gelation mechanism of MXene hydrogels require intensive research and engineering at nanoscale. Although the application of MXene-based composites in sensors has been widely studied, the preparation methods and applications of MXene-based hydrogels in wearable electronics is relatively rare. Thus, in order to facilitate the effective evolution of MXene hydrogel sensors, the design strategies, preparation methods, and applications of MXene hydrogels for flexible and wearable electronics are comprehensively discussed and summarized in this work.

Abstract:Stretchable electronics are crucial enablers for next-generation wearables intimately integrated into the human body. As the primary compliant conductors used in these devices, metallic nanostructure/elastomer composites often struggle to form conformal contact with the textured skin. Hybrid electrodes have been consequently developed based on conductive nanocomposite and soft hydrogels to establish seamless skin-device interfaces. However, chemical modifications are typically needed for reliable bonding, which can alter their original properties. To overcome this limitation, this study presents a facile fabrication approach for mechanically interlocked nanocomposite/hydrogel hybrid electrodes. In this physical process, soft microfoams are thermally laminated on silver nanowire nanocomposites as a porous interface, which forms an interpenetrating network with the hydrogel. The microfoam-enabled bonding strategy is generally compatible with various polymers. The resulting interlocked hybrids have a 28-fold improved interfacial toughness compared to directly stacked hybrids. These electrodes achieve firm attachment to the skin and low contact impedance using tissue-adhesive hydrogels. They have been successfully integrated into an epidermal sleeve to distinguish hand gestures by sensing muscle contractions. Interlocked nanocomposite/hydrogel hybrids reported here offer a promising platform to combine the benefits of both materials for epidermal devices and systems.

Abstract:With the surging demand for wearable sensor devices, the collective focus of the wearable field has shifted to developing flexible and highly resilient hydrogel sensors with strong adhesiveness. In this study, hydrogel nanofiber composites were fabricated using an interpenetrating framework comprising thermoplastic polyurethane nanofibers and tannic acid-derived adhesive hydrogels. The resultant hydrogel nanofiber composites were distinguished based on their suppleness and adhesion. The material adhered to the human skin surface and an array of other surfaces while displaying commendable extensibility. The substance also exhibited remarkable antibacterial attributes and durability. Because of these advantageous attributes, the synthesized hydrogel nanofiber composite can be used to develop flexible strain sensors for tracking microscopic physiological signals and human movements. Notably, manipulators can be used with these hydrogel nanofiber composites to grasp items and make various digital gestures. The findings of this study are expected to drive research on hydrogel strain sensors in the near future.

Abstract:Attributed to excellent mechanical compatibility with the human body and thus favorable comfortability and good integrability, stretchable conductors and functional conductive patterns have been one of the most important components in wearable electronic devices. However, due to poor compatibility between stretchability and conductivity in most material system, the simple, fast, and low-cost fabrication of a stretchable conductor, especially conductive patterns, has been a problem to address in this field. In this paper, we propose a flexible and robust laser ablation method in combination with a two-step film transfer process for the fabrication of stretchable silver nanowire (AgNW)-based conductive patterns. In this method, three critical steps were involved for the optimized properties. First, a simple one-pot solvothermal method was developed for scalable synthesis of high-quality AgNWs; second, a reliable film transfer method was proposed to ensure complete replication of the properties of the AgNW film; third, a digital laser ablation technique was employed for the selective removal of the AgNW layer. Finally, stretchable transparent conductive electrodes, circuits, and functional patterns were fabricated. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a wearable sensor and multipixel capacitive sensor arrays were prepared and showed good and reliable performance under various deformations, indicating the proposed method is available for the fabrication of various stretchable conductive patterns.
