Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based flexible sensors hold significant potential for applications in skin-like electronics, human motion detection, and human-machine interfaces. The development of strain-sensitive hydrogel with high stretchability, self-healing, and high conductivity is highly sought after. A hydrogel sensor with a strain-sensitive semi-interpenetrating network consisting of polyacrylamide (PAM), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and alginate (SA). With environmentally benign KCl as a conductive filler, SA/PVA/PAM/KCl hydrogel has a high toughness (4.8 MJ m -3 ), high stretchability (1250%), high tensile strength (510 Kpa), excellent recoverability, and excellent self-adhesiveness toward various substrates. The hydrogel sensors present high sensitivity with good linearity in the majority of the detection range with a gauge factor (GF) over 6.78, a response time of 268 ms, and excellent durability. The ionic conductive hydrogel has shown excellent energy harvesting capability as a triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG). Multifunctional organic hydrogels provide a protocol for the design and preparation of multifunctional hydrogel for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted widespread attention because of their integrated characteristics of being stretchable, deformable, adhesive, self-healable, and conductive. Herein, we report a highly conductive and tough double-network hydrogel based on a double cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAAM) and sodium alginate (SA) network with conducting polypyrrole nanospheres (PPy NSs) uniformly distributed in the network (PAAM-SA-PPy NSs). SA was employed as a soft template for synthesis of PPy NSs and distribution of PPy NSs uniformly in the hydrogel matrix to construct SA-PPy conductive network. The PAAM-SA-PPy NS hydrogel exhibited both high electrical conductivity (6.44 S/m) and excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 560 kPa at 870 %), as along as high toughness, high biocompatibility, good self-healing and adhesion properties. The assembled strain sensors showed high sensitivity and a wide sensing range (a gauge factor of 1.89 for 0-400 % strain and 4.53 for 400-800 % strain, respectively), as well as fast responsiveness and reliable stability. When used as a wearable strain sensor, it was able to monitor a series of physical signals from human large-scale joint motions and subtle muscle movements. This work provides a new strategy for the development of electronic skins and flexible strain sensors.

Abstract:With the surging demand for wearable sensor devices, the collective focus of the wearable field has shifted to developing flexible and highly resilient hydrogel sensors with strong adhesiveness. In this study, hydrogel nanofiber composites were fabricated using an interpenetrating framework comprising thermoplastic polyurethane nanofibers and tannic acid-derived adhesive hydrogels. The resultant hydrogel nanofiber composites were distinguished based on their suppleness and adhesion. The material adhered to the human skin surface and an array of other surfaces while displaying commendable extensibility. The substance also exhibited remarkable antibacterial attributes and durability. Because of these advantageous attributes, the synthesized hydrogel nanofiber composite can be used to develop flexible strain sensors for tracking microscopic physiological signals and human movements. Notably, manipulators can be used with these hydrogel nanofiber composites to grasp items and make various digital gestures. The findings of this study are expected to drive research on hydrogel strain sensors in the near future.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors, based on their good electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, are widely used in wearable health monitoring, sensitive tactile information display and multi-functional robot skin. However, it is still a challenge for wearable devices to prepare conductive hydrogel with flexibility, high strain, high sensitivity and biocompatibility. Herein, we designed an interpenetrating network conductive composite hydrogel, which composed with polyaniline, double bond modified chitosan and acrylamide, has excellent strength and toughness due to its unique physically and chemically cross-linked double network. The obtained hydrogel exhibited good tensile strength (0.3 MPa), high electrical conductivity (6.97 S/m) and strain sensitivity (gauge factor 15.9). The results showed that the strain sensor could detect the movement of human joints through electrical signals, and had good stability and reproducibility, which indicated that it was expected to be used in wearable health monitoring and multi-functional robot skin.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogel has recently garnered significant research attention due to its potential applications in the field of wearable and flexible electronics. Nonetheless, the integration of multifunctional and synergistic advantages, including reliable electronic properties, high swelling capacity, exceptional mechanical characteristics, and self-adhesive properties, presents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we have developed an ionic conductive hydrogel through the co-polymerization of 4-Acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and sodium acrylate using UV curing technology. The hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, superior swelling capacity, and remarkable self-adhesive attributes. The hydrogel serves as a highly sensitive strain sensor, enabling precise monitoring of both substantial and subtle human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates the capability to adhere to human skin, functioning as a human-machine interface for the detection of physiological signals, including electromyogram (EMG) signals, with low interfacial impedance. This work is anticipated to yield a new class of stretchable and conductive materials with diverse potential applications, ranging from flexible sensors and wearable bio-electronics to contributions in the field of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:In recent years, the field of flexible electronics has been thriving in academic achievements. Among them, the hydrogel‐based strain sensors possess some characteristic advantages in stretchability, flexibility, stickiness and regulable modulus of elasticity, thus they are more likely to attach to human skin and the surfaces of objects. Compared to traditional sensors, hydrogels can overcome shortcomings in toughness and elasticity. Therefore, hydrogels are suitable to serve as the core materials of wearable electronics. Hydrogel‐based strain sensors, as a typical kind of hydrogel flexible electronics, are in the categories of resistance sensors and capacitive sensors, which are primarily used for real‐time monitoring of human motions. Abstract:Hydrogel fibers that can be raided possess considerable promise in the realm of flexible electronic gadgets, as they exhibit both exceptional durability and excellent conductivity. Using a continuous coaxial wet-spinning method, we have created a hydrogel long fiber with a core-sheath structure that is both strong, conductive, frost-resistant, and braidable. Hydroxymethylpropyl cellulose (HPMC) added lowconcentration polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) toform the core layer of the fiber he sheaths made of highconcentration PVA. Next, the fibers are submerged in a sodium chloride solution to create PVA@PVA-HPMC hydrogel fibers that exhibit remarkable tensile strength (6.7 MPa), extensive elongation (450%), excellent electrical conductivity (9.23 S/m), and exceptional resistance to freezing temperatures (below −20 °C). The hydrogel fibers are further encapsulated using PSPI copolymers to enhance their environmental stability. Finally, the PVA@PVA-HPMC fibers are applied as flexible sensors to detect human joint movements, and assembled into e-textiles to monitor the positional distribution of pressure.

Abstract:The advent of hydrogel-based strain sensors has attracted immense research interest in artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and health-monitoring systems. However, the integration of the synergistic characteristics of good mechanical properties, self-adhesiveness, self-healing capability and high strain sensitivity for fabricating hydrogel-based strain sensors is still a challenge. Here, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel composed of a polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS) hybrid network is fabricated for wearable strain sensors. The PAAm network is cross-linked by hydrophobic associations, and the CS network is ionically cross-linked by carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs). These two networks are further interlocked by physical entanglement and hydrogen bond interactions. The obtained hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility, puncture resistance and self-healing capability because of the efficient energy dissipation of the dynamic cross-linking network. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit self-adhesive behavior on various materials, including polytetrafluoroethylene, wood, glass, aluminum, rubber and skin. Notably, the hydrogels can be applied as soft human-motion sensors for real-time and accurate detection of both large-scale and small human activities, including joint motions, speaking, breathing, and even subtle blood pulsation. Therefore, it is anticipated that the flexible, self-adhesive, self-healing and conductive hydrogel-based strain sensor will have promising applications in artificial intelligence, soft robots, biomimetic prostheses, and personal health care.
Wide-humidity, anti-freezing and stretchable multifunctional conductive carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogels for flexible wearable strain sensors and arrays

Abstract:Hydrogels play an important role in the design and fabrication of wearable sensors with outstanding flexibility, high sensitivity and versatility. Since hydrogels lose and absorb water during changes in humidity and temperature, it is critical and challenging to obtain hydrogels that function properly under different environmental conditions. Herein, a dual network hydrogel based on tannic acid (TA) reinforced polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was constructed, while the introduction of the green solvents Solketal and LiCl endowed the hydrogel with greater possibilities for further modification to improve the water content and consistency of the mechanical properties over 30-90 % RH. This composite hydrogel (PTSL) has long-term stability, excellent mechanical strength, and freezing resistance. As strain sensors, they are linear over the entire strain range (R2 = 0.994) and have a high sensitivity (GF = 2.52 over 0-680 % strain range). Furthermore, the hydrogel's exceptional electrical conductivity and freezing resistance are a result of the synergistic effect of Solketal and LiCl, which intensifies the contact between the water molecules and the colloidal phase. This research could address the suitability of hydrogels over a wide range of humidity and temperature, suggesting great applications for smart flexible wearable electronics in harsh environmental conditions.

Abstract:Flexible electronic devices and conductive materials can be used as wearable sensors to detect human motions. However, the existing hydrogels generally have problems of weak tensile capacity, insufficient durability, and being easy to freeze at low temperatures, which greatly affect their application in the field of wearable devices. In this paper, glycerol was partially replaced by water as the solvent, agar was thermally dissolved to initiate acrylamide polymerization, and MXene was used as a conductive filler and initiator promoter to form the double network MXene-PAM/Agar organic hydrogel. The presence of MXene makes the hydrogel produce more conductive paths and enforces the hydrogel's higher conductivity (1.02 S·m−1). The mechanical properties of hydrogels were enhanced by the double network structure, and the hydrogel had high stretchability (1300%). In addition, the hydrogel-based wearable strain sensor exhibited good sensitivity over a wide strain range (GF = 2.99, 0–200% strain). The strain sensor based on MXene-PAM/Agar hydrogel was capable of real-time monitoring of human movement signals such as fingers, wrists, arms, etc. and could maintain good working conditions even in cold environments (−26 °C). Hence, we are of the opinion that delving into this hydrogel holds the potential to broaden the scope of utilizing conductive hydrogels as flexible and wearable strain sensors, especially in chilly environments.

Abstract:In this study, we address the challenge of developing highly conductive hydrogels with enhanced stretchability for use in wearable sensors, which are critical for the precise detection of human motion and subtle physiological strains. Our novel approach utilizes amylopectin, a biopolymer, for the uniform integration of liquid metal gallium into the hydrogel matrix. This integration results in a conductive hydrogel characterized by remarkable elasticity (up to 7100 % extensibility) and superior electrical conductance (Gauge Factor = 31.4), coupled with a minimal detection limit of less than 0.1 % and exceptional durability over 5000 cycles. The hydrogel demonstrates significant antibacterial activity, inhibiting microbial growth in moist environments, thus enhancing its applicability in medical settings. Employing a synthesis process that involves ambient condition polymerization of acrylic acid, facilitated by a hydrophobic associative framework, this hydrogel stands out for its rapid gelation and robust mechanical properties. The potential applications of this hydrogel extend beyond wearable sensors, promising advancements in human-computer interaction through technologies like wireless actuation of robotic systems. This study not only introduces a viable material for current wearable technologies but also sets a foundation for future innovations in bio-compatible sensors and interactive devices.

Abstract:Although conductive and elastic materials are increasingly required for strain or stress sensing application in wearable electronic devices, it remains a great challenge to achieve outstanding and balanced mechanical performance while retaining high conductivity. Herein, the development of an ionic/electronic conductive hydrogel with mechanically robustness for strain sensors is reported. A covalently cross-linked polymer network is highly enhanced by a synergy of nano-enhancement (cellulose nanofibrils) and dynamic interactions containing hydrogen bonding and ionic coordination, which is used to support the mechanical structure of the hydrogel. By decorating with polypyrrole molecules via Fe 3+ induced in-situ polymerization, the integrity of network structure is further improved by constructing physical interactions and chain entanglement. Therefore, compared to virgin poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogel, the obtained hydrogel exhibits prominent mechanical performance containing high tensile strength (2.54 MPa) and ultra-high toughness (17.71 MJ m −3 ) along with remarkable stretchability (925%). Apart from Establishing a fair balance among mechanical parameters, a hybrid conductive path composed of ionic and electronic mechanism is also constructed simultaneously that results in an improved conductivity (995 mS m −1 ), wide working range (≈873%) and high sensitivity (maximum gauge factor: 25.6). Thus, the combination of outstanding mechanical performance and sensitive strain response makes the conductive hydrogel prepared herein apply for mechanically reliable and flexible strain sensor that can monitor diverse mechanical deformation (e.g., human joint movement) reflected by real-time resistance variation. Clearly, this work provides a new perspective for the design and fabrication of advanced gel-based materials aiming at high performance in human motion detection.

Abstract:To date, conductive hydrogels as an alternative to traditional rigid metallic conductors have attracted much attention in the field of flexible wearable electronic devices due to their inherent characteristics. Herein, a conductive bacterial cellulose (BC) nanocomposite hydrophobic-association (HA) hydrogel with highly stretchable, strong, self-healing, and notch-insensitive was fabricated by introducing the hydrophobic association. The obtained BCNC HA hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties (~ 2400 % of stress and ~ 0.35 MPa of mechanical strength), superior notch-insensitive property with a fracture energy of ~38 KJ.m −2 , and good self-healing property (healing efficiency of ~97 %). In addition, the hydrogel exhibits excellent ionic conductivity of ~1.90 S.m −1 and high sensing sensitivity toward tensile deformation. The wearable strain sensor based on this material is assembled can detect both large-scale motions and subtle body motions in real time, which show excellent durability (1000 cycles with the strain of 30 %). Thus, the BCNC HA hydrogels have promising potential in various wearable flexible electronic devices for artificial intelligence and human-machine interface applications in the future.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely studied for the potential application as wearable sensors due to their flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, conductivity, self-healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel with self-adhesion, self-healing, conductivity, and mechanical properties was fabricated by ion cross-linking chitosan (CS), acrylic acid (AA) polymer, and tea polyphenols (TP) in the presence of graphitized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in this work. The resultant hydrogel has a unique self-healing property (94.11% for strain self-healing and 90.60% for stress self-healing) and mechanical properties. The fracture stress was 0.075 MPa with the strain was 1184%, and the toughness reaches 0.48 MJ/m3. The synergistic effect of free ions and CNTs endows the hydrogel excellent electrical conductivity (6.67 S·m-1). Moreover, the hydrogel can adhere to various organic and inorganic materials. It exhibits repeatable self-adhesion to human skin and can be peeled off completely without any residual, irritation or allergic reactions. Additionally, the hydrogel also has good strain sensitivity and stable output signals in motion monitoring of human body as biosensor. Therefore, this work provides a new prospect for the design of multifunctional hydrogels for potential applications in wearable biosensors.

Abstract:Conductive, wearable, and flexible hydrogel-based sensors are considered as promising applications in human motion detection and physiological signal monitoring. However, it is still a problem to integrate multiple functions into one material for the next-generation smart devices. Herein, we fabricated an ionic/electronic dual conductive hydrogel by combining the chemically crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAM) and the physically crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan-grafted-polyaniline (CMCS-g-PANI)/Ag+ network. The double-network hydrogel displays a high stretchability, repeatable adhesiveness, antibacterial activities, and biocompatibility. It also has high sensitivity and stable electrical performance for wearable strain sensors. Furthermore, we assembled a self-powered strain sensor based on the conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy. It can be used for human motion detection even without external power supply. This work provides an avenue for the development of multifunctional hydrogels with outstanding mechanical and electronic performances for application in wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Flexible biosensors made from conductive hydrogels have shown tremendous potential in health management and human-machine interfaces. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to fabricate conductive hydrogels with robust resilience and long-term stability. Herein, we report a nanocomposite conductive hydrogel prepared through one-pot radical polymerization of 3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid (APBA) and acrylamide (AM) in the presence of Laponite XLG nanosheets (XLG) stabilized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Owing to the existence of various non-covalent interactions within the network (B-N coordination, hydrogen bond, and polymer chain entanglement), the hydrogels feature splendid mechanical properties with tensile strength of 252-323 kPa, fracture strain of 880-1200%, Young's modulus of 48-50 kPa and fracture energy of 911-1078 J m-2, and exhibit robust elasticity and fatigue resistance during 1000 consecutive tensile and compressive cycles. The hydrogels show remarkable sensing performances (gauge factor up to 9.43), broad sensing range of strain (1-300%) and pressure (1-80 kPa), enabling reliable and accurate monitoring of large and tiny motions in daily human life. Moreover, the conductive hydrogels could not only accelerate skin incision healing but also act as smart wearable sensors to monitor the skin wound healing process by detection of local temperature changes.
