Abstract:Flexible strain sensors exhibit outstanding advantages in terms of sensitivity and stability by detecting changes in physical signals. It can be easily attached to human skin and clothed to achieve monitoring of human motion and health. However, general sensing materials shows low stretchability and cannot respond to signals under large deformation. In this work, a highly stretchable polymer composite was developed by adding small amount (0.17 wt.%) of silver nanowires (AgNWs) in stretchable conductive polymer materials. The conductivity of polymer/AgNWs composite is 1.3 S/m with the stretchability up to 500%. The stretchable strain sensor based on the polymer/AgNWs composite can respond to strain signals in real time, even for 1% strain response, and shows excellent stability over 1,000 loading/unloading cycles. Moreover, the strain sensor can be attached to human skin and clothed to monitor joints, throat and pulse of the human body. The human body electrocardiogram (ECG) signal was detected successfully with the polymer/AgNWs electrode, which is comparable to the signal obtained by the commercial electrode. Overall, the sensors enable monitoring of human movement and health. These advantages make it a potential application in wearable devices and electronic skin.

Abstract:Stretchable resistive sensors attract wide attention due to their feasible fabrication method and promising application prospect, while the sensitivity (gauge factor (GF)) and response time for quick and effective response in working are very important for stretchable resistive sensors. Herein, a facile method combined with solution coating and laser direct writing is promoted to fabricate a silver nanowire/silver/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (AgNW/Ag/PDMS) strain sensor. The reduced Ag welds the AgNWs to make the conductive layer robust for deformation, and the obtained stretchable resistive sensor has a high GF of 623.2, a short response time of 51 ms, a recovery time of 50 ms, a wide sensing range beyond 35%, and good cyclic repeatability (over 2000 times). The sensor features highly sensitive and stable performance for monitoring diverse human and mechanical motions, demonstrating a promising and attractive application for wearable devices and human–machine interaction.

Abstract:As one of the promising humanâ€”machine interfaces, wearable sensors play an important role in modern society, which advances the development of wearable fields, especially in the promising applications of electronic skin (e-skin), robotics, prosthetics, and healthcare. In the last decades, wearable sensors tend to be capable of attractive capabilities such as miniaturization, multifunction, and smart integration, and wearable properties such as lightweight, flexibility, stretchability, and conformability for wider applications. In this work, we developed a stretchable multifunctional sensor based on porous silver nanowire/silicone rubber conductive film (P-AgNW/SR). Its unique structural configuration, i.e., an assembly of the P-AgNW/SR with good conductivity, stability, and resistance response, and the insulated silicone rubber layer, provided the feasibility for realizing multiple sensing capabilities. Specifically, porous microstructures of the P-AgNW/SR made the device to be used for pressure sensing, exhibiting outstanding dynamic and static resistive responsive behaviors and having a maximum sensitivity of 9.062 %Â·N âˆ’1 in a continuous compressive force range of âˆ1⁄4 16 N. With the merit of the good piezoresistive property of AgNW/SR networks embedded into the surface of micropores of the P-AgNW/SR, the device was verified to be a temperature sensor for detecting temperature changes in the human body and environment. The temperature sensor had good sensitivity of 0.844 %Â·Â°C âˆ’1 , high linearity of 0.999 in the range of 25â€“125 Â°C, and remarkable dynamic stability. Besides, the developed sensor was demonstrated to be a single electrode-triboelectric sensor for active sensing, owing to the unique assembly of the conductive P-AgNW/SR electrode and the silicone rubber friction layer. Based on the coupling effect of the triboelectrification and electrostatic induction, the generated electrical signals could be used to sense the human motions, according to the quantitative correlation between the human motions and the features in amplitude and waveform of the output signals. Thus, the developed stretchable sensor successfully achieved the integration of two types of passive sensing capabilities, i.e., pressure and temperature sensing, and one type of active sensing capability, i.e., triboelectric sensing, demonstrating the feasibility of monitoring multiple variables of the human body and environment.

Abstract:Flexible conductive materials and flexible electronic devices are driving the development of the next generation of cutting-edge wearable electronics. However, the existing hydrogel-based flexible conductive materials have limited tensile capacity, low toughness, and poor anti-fatigue performance, resulting in narrow sensing area and insufficient durability. In this paper, a conductive nanocomposite hydrogel with high ductility, toughness, and fatigue resistance is prepared by combining silver coated copper (Ag@Cu) nanoparticles with gelatin followed by one-step immersion in sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) solution. The salting-out of gelatin in Na2SO4 solution greatly improve the mechanical properties of this gelatin-based hydrogel. The uniform distribution of Ag@Cu nanoparticles inside the whole hydrogel endow the composite hydrogel with excellent electrical conductivity (1.35 S m−1). In addition, it displayed high and stable tensile strain sensitivity over a wide strain range (gauge factor = 2.08). Therefore, the Ag@Cu-Gel hydrogel is sensitive and stable enough to be successfully utilized as flexible wearable sensor for detecting human motion signals in real time, such as bending of human joints, swallowing, and throat vocalization. Furthermore, this hydrogel is also suitable for application as electronic skin for bionic robots. The above results demonstrate the promising application of Ag@Cu-Gel hydrogel for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Wearable strain sensors have drawn growing interest in the field of intelligent electronic devices because of their inherent advantages including miniaturization and portability. For practical applications, strain sensors with lightness, flexibility, and high sensitivity are urgently desired. Herein, the interconnected silver nanowires (AgNWs) are assembled into the nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) aerogel through unidirectional freeze-drying yielding an ultralight and conductive AgNWs/NFC aerogel (SNA) with ordered pore orientation. After thermal welding, the SNA possesses unique electron transfer channels, which can efficiently eliminate the interfacial electrical resistance at the AgNWs junctions and bring an impressive conductivity enhancement for the composite aerogel. Benefiting from the synergy of the desired microstructure and superior conductivity of as-prepared aerogel, the derived sensor shows desirable sensitivity (3.86 kPa−1), fast response time (180 ms), ultralow density (less than 13.58 mg/cm3) and detection limit of 0.5% strain, and exceptional stability and durability (over 10,000 cycles). Significantly, the integrated conductive network in SNA simultaneously offers real-time monitoring of subtle deformations and electrophysiological signals, which enables the designs of wearable device, acoustic sensor, and vehicles' speed and loading detector. The presented strategy opens up a new possibility for designing and manufacturing next-generation multifunctional strain sensor to bring the technology much closer to commercialization.

Abstract:With the surging demand for wearable sensor devices, the collective focus of the wearable field has shifted to developing flexible and highly resilient hydrogel sensors with strong adhesiveness. In this study, hydrogel nanofiber composites were fabricated using an interpenetrating framework comprising thermoplastic polyurethane nanofibers and tannic acid-derived adhesive hydrogels. The resultant hydrogel nanofiber composites were distinguished based on their suppleness and adhesion. The material adhered to the human skin surface and an array of other surfaces while displaying commendable extensibility. The substance also exhibited remarkable antibacterial attributes and durability. Because of these advantageous attributes, the synthesized hydrogel nanofiber composite can be used to develop flexible strain sensors for tracking microscopic physiological signals and human movements. Notably, manipulators can be used with these hydrogel nanofiber composites to grasp items and make various digital gestures. The findings of this study are expected to drive research on hydrogel strain sensors in the near future.

Abstract:A novel approach to develop stretchable iontronic sensors based on 1D stretchable fiber materials is presented, enabling their seamless integration with textiles through weaving or braiding process. Different device architectures are engineered into wearable textiles for wearable physiological signal monitoring and on‐body motion detections. Electronic textiles with remarkable breathability, lightweight, and comfort hold great potential in wearable technologies and smart human‐machine interfaces. Ionic capacitive sensors, leveraging the advantages of the electric double layer, offer higher sensitivity compared to traditional capacitive sensors. Current research on wearable ion‐capacitive sensors has focused mainly on two‐dimensional (2D) or three‐dimensional (3D) device architectures, which show substantial challenges for direct integration with textiles and compromise their wearing experience on conformability and permeability. One‐dimensional (1D) stretchable fiber materials serve as vital components in constructing electronic textiles, allowing for rich structural design, patterning, and device integration through mature textile techniques. Here, a stretchable functional fiber with robust mechanical and electrical performances is fabricated based on semi‐solid metal and ionic polymer, which provided a high stretchability and good electrical conductivity, enabling seamless integration with textiles. Consequently, high‐performance stretchable fiber sensors are developed through different device architecture designs, including pressure sensors with high sensitivity (7.21 kPa−1), fast response (60 ms/30 ms), and excellent stability, as well as strain sensors with high sensitivity (GF = 1.05), wide detection range (0–300% strain), and excellent sensing stability under dynamic deformations.

Abstract:Wearable and flexible sensors with high sensitivity and repeatability are widely used in many fields. However, the problems of poor sensor stability and high cost need to be addressed. Here, we prepared flexible hydrogel sensors of gelatin, polyacrylamide (PAM) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) using ethylene glycol and water as binary solvents. The adhesion properties of PAM allow the sensor to adhere stably to the surfaces of (plastic, rubber, and metal) objects. This flexible sensor has a ability to respond accurately to signals generated by changes in temperature, stress, and strain. With a gauge factors (GF) of 1.0 at 150% strain and 1.8 at 658% GF, the sensor has a detection limit as low as 1%, demonstrating the sensor's ability to detect both large and small strains. Even when the sensor is cycled 1000 times at 1% strain, the signal peak remains within a stable range overall. In this paper, we develop a low-cost, non-toxic, wearable flexible sensor that can detect signals such as strain, pressure, human motion, temperature, and micro-expression changes.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based flexible sensors hold significant potential for applications in skin-like electronics, human motion detection, and human-machine interfaces. The development of strain-sensitive hydrogel with high stretchability, self-healing, and high conductivity is highly sought after. A hydrogel sensor with a strain-sensitive semi-interpenetrating network consisting of polyacrylamide (PAM), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and alginate (SA). With environmentally benign KCl as a conductive filler, SA/PVA/PAM/KCl hydrogel has a high toughness (4.8 MJ m -3 ), high stretchability (1250%), high tensile strength (510 Kpa), excellent recoverability, and excellent self-adhesiveness toward various substrates. The hydrogel sensors present high sensitivity with good linearity in the majority of the detection range with a gauge factor (GF) over 6.78, a response time of 268 ms, and excellent durability. The ionic conductive hydrogel has shown excellent energy harvesting capability as a triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG). Multifunctional organic hydrogels provide a protocol for the design and preparation of multifunctional hydrogel for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Hydrogel‐based strain sensors have attracted considerable interest for applications such as skin‐like electronics for human motion detection, soft robotics, and human–machine interfaces. However, fabrication of hydrogel strain sensors with desirable mechanical and piezoresistive properties is still challenging. Herein, a biocompatible hydrogel sensor is presented, which is made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposite with high stretchability up to 500% strain, high mechanical strength of 900 kPa, and electrical conductivity (1.85 S m‐1) comparable to human skin. The hydrogel sensors demonstrate excellent linearity in the whole detection range and great durability under cyclic loading with low hysteresis of 7%. These excellent properties are believed to be contributed by a new bilayer structural design, i.e., a thin, conductive hybrid layer of PVA/silver nanowires (AgNWs) deposited on a pure strong PVA substrate. PVA solution of high concentration is used to fabricate the substrate while the top layer consists of dilute PVA solution so that high content of AgNWs can be dispersed to achieve high electrical conductivity. Together with a rapid response time (0.32 s) and biocompatibility, this new sensor offers great potential as a wearable sensor for epidermal sensing applications, e.g., detecting human joint and muscle movements.

Abstract:The potential applications of stretchable strain sensors in wearable electronics have garnered significant attention. However, developing susceptible stretchable strain sensors for practical applications still poses a considerable challenge. The present study introduces a stretchable strain sensor that utilizes silver nanowires (AgNWs) embedded into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The AgNWs have high flexibility and electrical conductivity. A stretchable AgNW/Pat-PDMS conductive film was prepared by arranging nanowires on the surface of PDMS using a simple rod coating method. Depending on the orientation angle, the overlap area between nanowires varies, resulting in different levels of separation under a given strain. Due to the separation of the nanowire and the change in current path geometry, the variation in strain resistance of the sensor can be primarily attributed to these factors. Therefore, precision in strain regulation can be adjusted by altering the angle θ (0°, 60°, or 90°) of the nanowire. At the same time, the stability of the AgNW/Pattern-PDMS (AgNW/Pat-PDMS) conductive film application was verified by preparing a sandwich structure PDMS/AgNW/Pat-PDMS stretchable strain sensor. The sensor exhibited high sensitivity within the operating sensing range (gauge factor (GF) of 15 within ~120% strain), superior durability (20,000 bending cycles and 5000 stretching cycles), and excellent response toward bending.

Abstract:Accurately capturing human movements is a crucial element of health status monitoring and a necessary precondition for realizing future virtual reality/augmented reality applications. Flexible motion sensors with exceptional sensitivity are capable of detecting physical activities by converting them into resistance fluctuations. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have become a preferred choice for the development of various types of sensors due to their outstanding electrical conductivity, transparency, and flexibility within polymer composites. Herein, we present the design and fabrication of a flexible strain sensor based on silver nanowires. Suitable substrate materials were selected, and the sensor's sensitivity and fatigue properties were characterized and tested, with the sensor maintaining reliability after 5000 deformation cycles. Different sensors were prepared by controlling the concentration of silver nanowires to achieve the collection of motion signals from various parts of the human body. Additionally, we explored potential applications of these sensors in fields such as health monitoring and virtual reality. In summary, this work integrated the acquisition of different human motion signals, demonstrating great potential for future multifunctional wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels are promising candidates for fabricating wearable sensors for human motion detection and disease diagnosis, and electronic skin. However, most of the existing ionic conductive hydrogel-based sensors primarily respond to a single-strain stimulus. Only a few ionic conductive hydrogels can respond to multiple physiological signals. Although some studies have explored multi-stimulus sensors, such as those detecting strain and temperature, the ability to identify the type of stimulus remains a challenge, which limits their applications. Herein, a multi-responsive nanostructured ionic conductive hydrogel was successfully developed by crosslinking the thermally sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-ionic liquid) conductive nanogel (PNI NG) with a poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate-co-ionic liquid) (PSI) network. The resultant hydrogel (PNI NG@PSI) was endowed with good mechanical stretchability (300%), resilience and fatigue resistance, and excellent conductivity (2.4 S m-1). Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibited a sensitive and stable electrical signal response and has a potential application in human motion detection. Moreover, the introduction of a nanostructured thermally responsive PNIPAAm network also endowed it with a sensitive and unique thermal-sensing ability to timely and accurately record temperature changes in the range of 30-45 °C, holding promise for application as a wearable temperature sensor to detect fever or inflammation in the human body. In particular, as a dual strain-temperature sensor, the hydrogel demonstrated an excellent capability of distinguishing the type of stimulus from superposed strain-temperature stimuli via electrical signals. Therefore, the implementation of the proposed hydrogel in wearable multi-signal sensors provides a new strategy for different applications, such as health monitoring and human-machine interactions.

Abstract:Functional fibers have attracted more research attention due to its potential in developing advanced electronic textiles for wearable devices. However, challenges still exist in preparing high-performance fiber-shaped sensors with superior flexibility and stretchability while gaining high sensitivity and wide detection range. Herein, we propose the design and fabrication of an ultra-flexible and super-elastic fiber-shaped strain sensor via a facile combining approach of wet-spinning and dip-coating. The sensor adopts a core-sheath configuration of liquid metal droplets dispersing in porous thermoplastic polyurethane as a substrate core and carbon nanotube interwined network embedding silver nanowires as a strain sensitive sheath. By taking advantage of both the composition of multiple functional materials and the design of microstructured device configuration, the developed fiber-shaped sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 7336.1), extremely large workable strain range (500%), low strain detection limit (0.5%), fast response time (200 ms) and well stability (5000 cycles). In addition, the sensor is temperature insensitive, harsh solution inert, degradable and recyclable. Intriguingly, the fiber-shaped sensor can be used to detect various human motions and gestures by directly attaching to skins or elaborately weaving into textiles, demonstrating its great potential in human healthcare monitoring and human-machine interactions.

Abstract:Conventional hydrogels are prone to water loss and instability, while non-hydrogel materials can be designed with high stability and repeatability. Therefore, a flexible sensing material was developed to meet the requirements of high elasticity, good stability, and high repeatability using a simple physical blending method. The developed ionogel comprised polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel as the elastomer matrix, ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate as the dielectric, and dibutyl adipate (DBA) as the plasticizer. The PVC organic-ionogel exhibited good physicochemical stability without any phase change in the range of -30 to 127 °C, and it had a maximum tensile strain of 424%. Its shape and dimensions remained unchanged in air for 60 days, and the sensing performance was maintained following exposure to air for over a year. Moreover, the PVC organic-ionogel with moderate DBA and IL contents (DBA 7, IL 3%) showed the best performance, which exhibited the best linearity with a relative error of only 0.96%, sensitivity of 1.90, modulus of 17.71 kPa, response time of 161 ms, and continuous and stable operation for 35,000 cycles. This excellent performance enabled the PVC organic-ionogel to detect a range of human movements, namely finger flexion, throat vibration, muscle contraction, daily movements, and special limb movements, such as Tai Chi, with high accuracy and sensitivity. This work provides a new approach for the design of flexible sensing materials with variable parameters, in addition to a new solution for the development of wearable devices, sports-related risk monitoring, and boxing action optimization. Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogel has recently garnered significant research attention due to its potential applications in the field of wearable and flexible electronics. Nonetheless, the integration of multifunctional and synergistic advantages, including reliable electronic properties, high swelling capacity, exceptional mechanical characteristics, and self-adhesive properties, presents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we have developed an ionic conductive hydrogel through the co-polymerization of 4-Acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and sodium acrylate using UV curing technology. The hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, superior swelling capacity, and remarkable self-adhesive attributes. The hydrogel serves as a highly sensitive strain sensor, enabling precise monitoring of both substantial and subtle human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates the capability to adhere to human skin, functioning as a human-machine interface for the detection of physiological signals, including electromyogram (EMG) signals, with low interfacial impedance. This work is anticipated to yield a new class of stretchable and conductive materials with diverse potential applications, ranging from flexible sensors and wearable bio-electronics to contributions in the field of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:With the development of technology and the improvement of living standards, wearable electronic devices have attracted more attention. Here, both stretchable and compressible hydrogel strain sensors based on carbon nanofiber powder (CFP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are prepared by freezing-thawing cycles. The PVA/CFP hydrogel exhibits excellent stretchable (366%) and compressible strains (70%). During 1000 loading-unloading cycles, the PVA/CFP hydrogel has a low plastic deformation (<10%, for both stretching and compressing), small energy loss efficiency (5.62% under stretching and 12.13% under compressing), and stable mechanical strength and excellent sensitivity, at conditions whether it is stretched to 100% or compressed to 50% strains. The stretchable and compressible PVA/CFP hydrogel can not only accurately detect multiple stretching behaviors of human activity, such as bending of joints, swallowing or breathing, but also detect the changes of pressure during walking. Besides, the PVA/CFP hydrogel can operate electronic screens due to its internal ions, with more potential application in soft robotics and electronic skin.

Abstract:As a classic flexible material, hydrogels show great potential in wearable electronic devices. The application of strain sensors prepared using them in human health monitoring and humanoid robotics is developing rapidly. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate a high-toughness, large-tensile-deformation, strain-sensitive. and human-skin-fit hydrogel with the integration of excellent mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity. In this study, a flexible sensor using a highly strain-sensitive skin-like hydrogel with acrylamide and sodium alginate was designed using liquid metallic gallium as a "reactive" conductive filler. The sensor had a low elastic modulus (30 kPa) similar to that of skin, a high-toughness (2.25 MJ m-3), self-stiffness, a large tensile deformation (1400%), recoverability, and excellent fatigue resistance. Moreover, the addition of gallium might enhance the electrical conductivity (1.9 S m-1) of the hydrogel while maintaining high transparency, and the flexible sensor device constructed from it showed high sensitivity to strain (gauge factor = 4.08) and pressure (gauge factor = 0.455 kPa-1). As a result, the hydrogel sensor could monitor various human motions, including large-scale joint bending and tiny facial expression, breathing, voice recognition, and handwriting. Furthermore, it might even be used for human-computer communication.
