Abstract:Gasification is one of the most promising approaches to accomplishing efficient utilization of biomass, nevertheless, it shows severe problems of low efficiency and syngas quality, which deserves further improvements. In this regard, deoxygenation-sorption-enhanced biomass gasification is proposed and experimentally explored using deoxidizer-decarbonizer materials (xCaO-Fe) for intensified hydrogen production. The materials follow the deoxygenated looping of Fe0-3e-↔Fe3+ as an electron donor and the decarbonized looping of CaO + CO2 ↔ CaCO3 as a CO2 sorbent. Specifically, the H2 yield and CO2 concentration reach 7.9 mmol·g-1 biomass and 10.5 vol%, which increases by 311% and decreases by 75%, respectively, compared with conventional gasification, confirming the promotion effect of deoxygenation-sorption enhancement. Fe embedded within the CaO phase is successfully constructed with the formation of functionalized interface structure, affirming the strong interaction between CaO and Fe. This study brings in a new concept for biomass utilization via synergistic deoxygenation and decarbonization, which will substantially boost high-quality renewable hydrogen production.
Hydrogenolysis and Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin in a Two-Step Process to Produce Hydrocarbons and Alkylphenols

Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:The valorization of biomass to produce biofuels has become a heavily investigated field due to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental concerns. Among them, the research on deoxygenation of fatty acids or esters derived from biomass as well as municipal sludge organics to produce diesel-like hydrocarbons has become a hot topic. Fatty acid is a key intermediate derived from ester hydrolysis, therefore has attracted more attention as a model compound. In this review, we first introduce and compare the three reaction pathways of hydrodeoxygenation, decarboxylation and decarbonylation, for the deoxygenation of fatty acids and esters. The preference of reaction pathway is closely related to the type of raw materials and catalysts as well as reaction conditions. The special purpose of this review is to summarize the dilemma and possible strategies for deoxygenation of fatty acids, which is expected to provide guidance for future exploration and concentrates. The atom utilization along with stability during reaction in a long time is the most important index for commercial economy. Herein, we propose that the rational design and delicate synthesis of stable single-atom non-noble catalysts may be the best solution. The ultimately goal is aiming to develop sustainable production of green diesel hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a fundamental and promising route for bio-oil upgrading to produce petroleum-like hydrocarbon fuels or chemical building blocks. One of the main challenges of this technology is the demand of high-pressure H2, which poses high costs and safety concerns. Accordingly, developing cost-effective routes for biomass or bio-oil upgrading without the supply of commercial H2 is essential to implement the HDO at commercial scale. This article critically reviewed the very recent studies relating to the novel strategies for upgrading the biofeedstocks with ‘green’ H2 generated from renewable sources. More precisely, catalytic transfer hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis, combined reforming and HDO, combined metal hydrolysis and HDO, water-assisted in-situ HDO and nonthermal plasma technology and self-supported hydrogenolysis are reviewed herein. Current challenges and research trends of each strategy are also proposed aiming to motivate further improvement of these novel routes to become competitive alternatives to conventional HDO technology.
High purity hydrogen production via coupling CO2 reforming of biomass-derived gas and chemical looping water splitting

This process requires neither removal of CO2 from upstream biomass-derived gas, nor downstream H2 purification and CO2 separation, hence achieving a great level of process intensification. The reforming temperature, CH4/CO2 ratio, oxygen carrier reduction tempera-ture, reduction behavior, types of fuel gas and oxygen carriers, H2 production, oxygen carrier regeneration and process cyclability were investigated, respectively. The coupling process resulted in higher CH4 conversion (near 100%) and inherently CO2 separation. CO-free H2 was produced due to no carbon being carried over from the reduction cycle to the H2 production cycle. Meanwhile, H2 yields up to 2.93 mmole per mmole CH4. Mass balance analysis reveals that the process can be operated auto-thermal without costly oxygen production or without mixing air with carbon-containing fuel gases. Moreover, the cyclability results showed that the oxygen carrier remained its activity over 265 redox cycles.

Abstract:Driven by the growing energy crisis and environmental concerns regarding the utilization of fossil fuels, biomass liquefaction has emerged as a highly promising technology for the production of renewable energy and value-added chemicals. However, due to the high oxygen content of biomass materials, biocrude oil produced from liquefaction processes often contains substantial oxygenated compounds, posing challenges for direct downstream applications. Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) upgrading with hydrogen donors is crucial for improving the quality and applicability of biomass-derived fuels and chemicals. The costs, safety, and sustainability concerns associated with high-pressure gaseous hydrogen and organic molecule hydrogen donors are driving researchers to explore alternative and innovative biomass hydrodeoxygenation approaches without exogenous hydrogen donors. This review offers an overview of the recent developments in catalytic hydro-liquefaction and hydrodeoxygenation methods for biomass valorization without external hydrogen donation, including catalytic self-transfer hydrogenolysis using endogenous hydrogen in biomass structure, in situ catalytic hydrodeoxygenation employing water as the hydrogen donor, and in situ hydrodeoxygenation via water splitting assisted by zero-valent metals. The in situ hydrogen supply mechanisms and the impact of various hydrodeoxygenation catalysts on hydrogen donation efficiency using endogenous hydrogen are summarized in detail in this work. Furthermore, the current obstacles and future research demands are also discussed in order to provide valuable recommendations for the advancement of biomass utilization technologies.

Abstract:Fe-based chemical looping gasification is a clean biomass technology, which has the advantage of reducing CO2 emissions and the potential of self-sustaining operation without supplemental heating. A novel process combining Fe-based chemical looping and biomass pyrolysis was proposed and simulated using Aspen Plus. The biomass was first subjected to pyrolysis to coproduce biochar, bio-oil and pyrolysis gas; the pyrolysis gas was subjected to an Fe looping process to obtain high-purity hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The influences of the pyrolysis reactor operating temperature and fuel reactor operation temperature, and the steam reactor and air reactor on the process performance are researched. The results showed that, under the operating condition of the established process, 23.07 kg/h of bio-oil, 24.18 kg/h of biochar, 3.35 kg/h of hydrogen and a net electricity of 3 kW can be generated from 100 kg/h of rice straw, and the outlet CO2 concentration of the fuel reactor was as high as 80%. Moreover, the whole exergy efficiency and total exergy loss of the proposed process was 58.98% and 221 kW, respectively. Additionally, compared to biomass direct chemical looping hydrogen generation technology, the new process in this paper, using biomass pyrolysis gas as a reactant in the chemical looping hydrogen generation process, can enhance the efficiency of hydrogen generation.

Abstract:In order to produce high-quality bio-oils and syngas from biomass, a novel pyrolysis approach based on the chemical looping concept, namely chemical looping pyrolysis (CLPy), was proposed. In the current work, thermodynamic feasibility study and experimental investigations of the proposed CLPy with calcium-ferrite oxygen carriers and Nannochloropsis sp. microalgal biomass were conducted. The results suggested that the reduced calcium-ferrite oxygen carrier facilitated the denitrification, ketonization, and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-oils during the pyrolysis stage. Since large amounts of oxygen in bio-oils were transferred to the reduced oxygen carrier, the heating value of bio-oils was remarkably increased up to 34.2 MJ/kg and 36.0 MJ/kg by employing the reduced CaFe2O4 and Ca2Fe2O5 oxygen carrier, respectively. In addition, a high H2 content of 50% in the pyrolysis gas was observed at the optimal pyrolysis temperature. In the gasification stage, the production of high-quality syngas was achieved. The content of H2 accounted for up to 70% of the gasification products when taking steam as gasifying agent, while that of CO was composed of 66% without the use of a gasifying agent. Moreover, the oxygen carrier was reduced to its reduction state, available for the next loop. In summary, CLPy proposed in this work involves the continuous transference of the oxygen from bio-oils to syngas by an oxygen carrier and provides a brand-new approach for the comprehensive utilization of biomass.

Abstract:Linz-Donawitz converter gas (LDG), an important by-product in the steel industry with CO (55–60 vol%) and CO 2 (15–20 vol%) as the main components, is usually used as fuel for heating or power generation, releasing massive of diluted CO 2 with the concentration lower than 15 % that is difficult to capture. Herein, we propose a method to produce pure H 2 via chemical looping water splitting by using LDG as reducing agent, which can easily concentrate CO 2 for capture. Fe 2 O 3 , one of the most environmentally friendly and low-cost oxides, was chosen as the oxygen carrier to perform this concept. It was found that the addition of small amounts of Ce 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 2 solid solution could strongly improve the activity of Fe 2 O 3 for CO conversion, especially at relatively low temperatures. Compared with pure Fe 2 O 3 , the CO conversion and H 2 yield were increased from 39.5 % and 0.34 mmol·g −1 to 100 % and 2.32 mmol·g −1 at 650 °C, respectively, after adding 5 wt% of Ce 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 2 . The strong interaction between the two oxides contributed to the enhanced performance via promoting CO adsorption and lattice oxygen releasing. Water splitting assisted by air oxidation could fully regenerate the reduced oxygen carrier, and the oxygen carrier was stable during the long-term chemical looping process, with the CO 2 capture rate at ca. 95.8 %. In situ DRIFTS results showed that CO 2 was produced through a direct reaction of lattice oxygen with CO, and the decomposition of carbonate species intermediate by adsorption of CO on the surface of oxygen carriers. This study gave full evidence that it was feasible for achieving H 2 generation and CO 2 capture in one step via chemical looping reforming of reducing exhaust gases (e.g., LDG) from industrial emissions.

Abstract:An integrated recycling waste bioenergy and manufacturing low-carbon hydrogen by a method to convert biogas to hydrogen based on the chemical looping concepts was proposed in this study. Biogas from biomass anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis was employed in the reduction step as the feedstock of fuel gas. Simulated marsh gas (CH4 and CO2) and pyrolysis gas (CO and H2) were used to validate the feasibility of the reduction performance with iron (III) oxide at different reaction temperatures. The experiments were conducted by using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a tandem packed-bed reactor. As for marsh gas, the reaction behavior was completely different under different CO2 concentrations and converting temperatures. The reduction reaction with CH4 would be divided into three stages, including complete combustion, competition reaction, and partial oxidation stage. Furthermore, the syngas with a tailored ratio of 1:1 can be produced without CH4 breakthrough by adjusting CO2 concentration. Besides, the total H2 production achieved 241.9┬ĀmL per gram of oxygen carrier with a purity of 98.29%. Regarding the pyrolysis gas, the solid conversion and CO breakthrough curve were investigated. Compared to a single reactor, seven reactors were required to increase the average solid conversion from 34.1% to 42% and reduced the total redox time from 705.6┬Āmin to 437.7┬Āmin. Overall, this study provided a link between waste bioenergy recycling and H2 generation with a novel chemical looping hydrogen generation (CLHG) system and supplied theoretical support for scaling up the packed-bed reactor to improve H2 production efficiency.
CaO-Assisted Alkaline Liquid Waste Drives Corn Stalk Chemical Looping Gasification for Hydrogen Production

Abstract:The chemical looping gasification (CLG) process is a promising pathway to produce hydrogen-enriched syngas with biomass. It is urgent to enhance the reactivity and thermal stability of oxygen carriers (OC) and capture the inherently separated CO2. This work presents the strategy of simultaneous modification of a Fe2O3/Al2O3 oxygen carrier and the supplement of an oxidant for corn stalk chemical looping gasification by introducing KNO3-containing ethanol liquid waste. CaO is employed to capture the generated CO2 and promote the reaction balance toward hydrogen production in a fuel reactor (FR). The highest carbon conversion reaction rate of 1.1 × 10–4 mol/g could be obtained at the ratio of CaO to fuel carbon and the reaction temperature of 1.5 and 600 °C, respectively. The kinetics and thermodynamics analyses under the optimized condition are further discussed to verify the possibility and high efficiency of using alkaline organic liquid waste to boost solid fuel gasification for hydrogen production. This CLG strategy shows multifunctional merits, including organic liquid waste treatment, biomass CLG promotion, and hydrogen production enhancement.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:To realize the clean and efficient directional conversion of biomass, chemical looping reforming of biomass volatile CH 4 based on a decoupling strategy is expected to carry out carbon-negative production of hydrogen-rich syngas. In this paper, a multi-functional oxygen carrier (NiFe 2 O 4 @SBA-16) for encapsulating the active metal oxide component NiFe 2 O 4 with a three-dimensional interconnecting pore molecular sieve SBA-16 was designed. The experimental results showed that the modification strategy of composite metal oxide encapsulation improved syngas selectivity and CH 4 conversion based on the fixed-bed reactor. 20 %NiFe 2 O 4 @SBA-16 showed 22.1 % CH 4 conversion and 92.6 % CO selectivity under 750 °C, and it maintained good cycle stability after 15 cycles. The H 2 /CO ratio was effectively improved by adding part of CO 2 into the feed gas, and the CH 4 conversion reached over 35 %. This study provides essential data for the clean preparation of hydrogen-rich syngas from biomass and the development and design of multifunctional oxygen carriers.

Abstract:A novel solar-driven biomass chemical looping gasification (SBCLG) system was proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the co-production of pure hydrogen and syngas from biomass wastes using high-flux solar irradiation. In this system, a steam reactor and a solar fuel reactor were adopted to replace the air and fuel reactors in a typical biomass chemical looping gasification (BCLG) system, respectively. The SBCLG exhibits two advantages over BCLG: (1) the syngas yield is raised as the high-temperature process heat is provided by solar radiation rather than biomass combustion, and (2) a pure hydrogen stream is generated in addition to the syngas stream, which allows a flexible adjustment of the carbon-to-hydrogen ratio for downstream chemical processes. This study marked the first demonstration of a complete cycle of SBCLG in a cavity-type packed-bed solar reactor under simulated high-flux solar irradiation. Magnetite (Fe3O4) was circulated between the steam reactor and the solar fuel reactor as the oxygen carrier (OC). The optimal operational parameters, the reaction temperature and solid contact pattern, were first determined in preliminary experiments in an electric furnace. Then, the effect of biomass to oxygen carrier mass ratio (mRH:mOC) on the key performance indicators was also investigated in a solar reactor. When mRH:mOC = 1:2, the highest values of the average carbon-gas yield of 0.69 +/- 0.05 and energy upgrade factor of 0.71 +/- 0.04 were achieved. The solar fuel reactor produced CH4, CO, CO2 and H2 at 0.63, 11.86, 8.85, and 18.53 mmol/g biomass, respectively, with the steam reactor yielding high-purity H2 at 7.17 mmol/g biomass. The results indicated that the SBCLG is a viable method for co-production of pure hydrogen and syngas in separate streams.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from chemical looping steam reforming using an oxygen transport catalyst is definitely enhanced by CO2 in-situ capture, which shifts the chemical equilibrium and reduces the energy demands. The utilization of CO2 from this process as a reactant for chemicals and fuels could help to improve economic reasons and mitigate its impact on climate. In this study, we proposed a sorption-enhanced chemical looping steam reforming of glycerol to realize the synergetic capture and conversion of CO2 in one integrated chemical looping hydrogen production process. The process is characterized to use the oxidized NiO/NiAl2O4 as a steam reforming catalyst, the reduced NiO/NiAl2O4 as a CO2-CH4 dry reforming catalyst, and the inexpensive dolomite as a CO2 sorbent. The surface carbon that would deactivate the catalyst is combusted by air after CO2-CH4 dry reforming and the Ni on the catalyst is re-oxidized. The coupling of these different processes of chemical looping steam reforming, CO2 in-situ capture, dolomite decomposition and CO2 in-situ utilization, results in simultaneous generation of high purity hydrogen and syngas. The results demonstrated that hydrogen of above 92.5% was one-step generated and CO2 was decreased to zero in the pre-CO2 breakthrough periods. The reduced NiO/NiAl2O4 catalysts favored the CO2-CH4 dry reforming at 850 degrees C. The syngas of H2-to-CO molar ratios of 0.8-1.1 through the conversion of CO2 from in-situ extraction of the absorbed CO2 dolomite, was produced. The NiO/Al2O4 with 15 wt% NiO gave the highest hydrogen and syngas yields, and maintained high performance for the proposed system. The catalysts and dolomite exhibited good stability with no obvious loss of activity in 10 cycles.
Solar-driven biomass chemical looping gasification using Fe 3 O 4 for syngas and high-purity hydrogen production

Abstract:A novel solar-driven biomass chemical looping gasification (SBCLG) system was proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the co-production of pure hydrogen and syngas from biomass wastes using high-flux solar irradiation. In this system, a steam reactor and a solar fuel reactor were adopted to replace the air and fuel reactors in a typical biomass chemical looping gasification (BCLG) system, respectively. The SBCLG exhibits two advantages over BCLG: (1) the syngas yield is raised as the high-temperature process heat is provided by solar radiation rather than biomass combustion, and (2) a pure hydrogen stream is generated in addition to the syngas stream, which allows a flexible adjustment of the carbon-to-hydrogen ratio for downstream chemical processes. This study marked the first demonstration of a complete cycle of SBCLG in a cavity-type packed-bed solar reactor under simulated high-flux solar irradiation. Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) was circulated between the steam reactor and the solar fuel reactor as the oxygen carrier (OC). The optimal operational parameters, the reaction temperature and solid contact pattern, were first determined in preliminary experiments in an electric furnace. Then, the effect of biomass to oxygen carrier mass ratio ( m RH : m OC ) on the key performance indicators was also investigated in a solar reactor. When m RH : m OC = 1:2, the highest values of the average carbon-gas yield of 0.69 ± 0.05 and energy upgrade factor of 0.71 ± 0.04 were achieved. The solar fuel reactor produced CH 4 , CO, CO 2 and H 2 at 0.63, 11.86, 8.85, and 18.53 mmol/g biomass, respectively, with the steam reactor yielding high-purity H 2 at 7.17 mmol/g biomass. The results indicated that the SBCLG is a viable method for co-production of pure hydrogen and syngas in separate streams.

Abstract:In the preparation of the biofuel or biochemical process, reducing the oxygen content of the feedstock and improving hydrogen carbon ratio are very important. The hydrodeoxygenation is the key to this process. With the expect to provide a reference for finding a highly efficient, green, economic and sustainable catalytic system that can convert biomass into biofuel, this paper focused on the elementary reactions of hydrodeoxygenation and reviewed the development of hydrodeoxygenation reaction according to the differences of oxygen-contained compounds′structure and catalytic systems.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass and CO2 has become very important for solving environmental problems all over the world. In this study, a novel Fe-based CO2-gasification (FCG) process of biomass which combining chemical looping CO2 gasification and steam reforming process is proposed. The effects of experimental parameters including biomass/oxygen carrier (B/OC) ratio and initial CO2 concentration on the performance of the gas, liquid and solid products were analyzed in detail. The results show that CO2 has an opposite effect on the oxygen transfer capacity (OTC) of OC and carbon conversion rate, which results in an inflection point of initial CO2 concentration at around 20%: larger than this value, only a little hydrogen is generated, and once the concentration lower than this value, the yield of hydrogen dramatically increases. Moreover, the carbon conversion rate encountered a slight decline at the inflection point. As for the generation of tar, CO2 and OC have a synergetic effect on tar cracking: CO2 promotes the cracking of heavy tar and OC reduces the production of light tar effectively, and thus a better effect of tar cracking can be obtained when both OC and CO2 exist. This process can generate inherently separated syngas (CO-rich gas and high purity of H2), reduce the amount of undesired tar, utilize CO2 and Fe-containing solid waste, and thus this process is expected to have an extensive prospect for industrial application.

Abstract:H 2 production from renewable bio-oil is a promising way to supply green hydrogen; however, this technology suffers from the high viscosity, high corrosiveness, and complex compositions of the bio-oil. Thus, in the present study, we propose a novel method that converts real biomass pyrolysis vapors into H 2 via a chemical looping process. Fe–Al–Ni composite oxide pellets were prepared in a simple and industrial way and then used as the oxygen carrier (OC), and their redox activity and cycle stability were assessed in a fixed-bed reactor system under different conditions with pine sawdust volatiles as the fuel. The results indicated that the Fe–Al–Ni composites exhibited nearly 99% CO 2 selectivity in the reduction stage and high H 2 purity (>98%) in the H 2 production stage when the redox temperature was higher than 850 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the Fe–Al–Ni composite oxide pellets at different bed layers indicated that Fe 2 O 3 can be reduced to FeO by sawdust pyrolysis vapors, and an inert spinel phase of Fe–Al–O was formed concurrently. Coke deposited on the OC would hinder reduction, thereby decreasing the fuel conversion and H 2 energy efficiency, but it can be improved by increasing the pyrolysis temperature. Long cycling tests showed that a relatively stable H 2 energy efficiency of 20% and a H 2 purity of 98% could be obtained in whole tests; nevertheless, the conversion of CH 4 declined rapidly after 25 cycles, which could be attributed to the interior sintering, iron migration to the outer surface and garnet phase (Al 3 Fe 5 O 12 ) formation of the OC according to the scanning electron micrograph, micro texture, and XRD analysis of the OC with different cycling tests.

Abstract:Abstract Chemical looping of bio-oil is a promising route to convert this low-quality fuel to pure hydrogen with inherent gas separation and low energy penalty. By taking account of the compatibility of the oil gasification and chemical looping reactions, we design and built a novel dual fluidized bed in this work. Currently, the hydrodynamic analysis was conducted to gain some running experience and explore the optimal operating parameters. The effect of the gas velocities, particle sizes and total bed inventories on the solid flux and gas leakage were investigated. The results showed that the gas velocities of both two reactors played a positive effect on the solid flux and varying the fuel reactor gas velocity can be used as an efficient way to adjust the system solid flux. Based on a gas tracing method, the gas leakage test was performed and the results indicated that hydrogen purity could be enhanced by decreasing FR, loop seal gas flow rates and adding more bed material.
