Abstract:The particulate matter in diesel engine exhaust can easily get inhaled and do great harm to human health. Incineration of particulate matter from diesel exhaust can be realized simply by oxidation,yet it mainly consists of carbon soot and SOF. The aftertreatment techniques for PM, including diesel particulate filters ( DPFs ) coupled with regeneration , diesel oxidant catalyst (DOC),and electrostatic capture are reviewed. The non-thermal plasma technique is introduced. The common chemical reactions in plasma reactors are presented. Different types of discharge in gas are also discussed. Direct and indirect plasma method based on different locations of plasma equipment are presented. The latter one helps avoid bad effects on plasma process caused by high temperature. The traditional methods for soot inciberation are rather mature in comparison with the plasma method. So more researches on the plasma process are suggested,so as to provide reference for the development and application of plasma reactors.

Abstract:Green and efficient NO x removal at low temperature is still desired. NO x removal via non-thermal plasma (NTP) reduction is one of such technique. This work presents the experimental and theoretical study on the NO x removal via NTP reduction (NTPRD) in dielectric barrier discharge reactor (DBD). The effect of O 2 molar fraction on NO x species in the outlet of DBD, and effects of NH 3 /NO molar ratio and discharge power of DBD on NO x removal efficiency are investigated. Results indicate that anaerobic condition and higher discharge power is beneficial to direct removal of NO x , and the NO x removal efficiency can be up to 98.5% under the optimal operating conditions. It is also found that adding NH 3 is favorable for the reduction of NO x to N 2 at lower discharge power. In addition, the NO x removal mechanism and energy consumption analysis for the NTPRD process are also studied. It is found that the reduced active species (N*, N − , N + , N 2 *, NH 2 + , etc.) generated in the NTPRD process play important roles for the reduction of NO x to N 2 . Our work paves a novel pathway for NO x removal from anaerobic gas in industrial application.

Abstract:In order to study the new technique of plasma wastewater treatment, the degradation behaviour ofnitenpyram (NTP) pesticide was investigated in a low-temperature plasma formed during a dielectric barrier discharge process. The reactor was a radial flow sedimentation tank centred around the water inlet. We studied the effect of pesticide concentration and input power of the dielectric barrier discharge, together with the effect of external factors on the degradation of nitenpyram pesticide wastewater such as conductivity and the use of various of catalysts, and the reaction products were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The results showed that NTP could be effectively removed from aqueous solution by low-temperature plasma. Increasing the input power could improve the efficiency of degradation, conforming to a first-order kinetic model. Use of a suitable catalyst clearly improved the degradation process, as also did low conductivity. The pH of NTP was reduced with discharge time.

Abstract:Nonthermal plasma (NTP) can oxidize and decompose particulate matter (PM) of diesel engines at low temperatures (≤200°C), exhibiting good application prospects. PM samples were collected under different diesel engine loads and were oxidized using an NTP method. The volatile fraction (VF) mass fraction of the PM samples decreases under low engine loads (<70%) and increases under high engine loads (≥70%) after the NTP treatment. NTP can remove aldehyde groups in PM and weaken the volatilization of PM. A higher temperature is needed for the VF to reach its maximum volatilization rate after the NTP treatment. The relative content of the small molecules is significantly higher after the NTP treatment.

Abstract:A plasma reactor with catalysts was used to treat exhaust gas from a gasoline engine in order to decrease particulate matter (PM) emissions. The effect of non-thermal plasma (NTP) of the dielectric discharges on the removal of PM from the exhaust gas was investigated experimentally. The removal efficiency of PM was based on the concentration difference in PM for particle diameters ranging from 0.3 to 5.0 microm as measured by a particle counter. Several factors affecting PM conversion, including the density of plasma energy, reaction temperature, flow rate of exhaust gas, were investigated in the experiment. The results indicate that PM removal efficiency ranged approximately from 25 to 57% and increased with increasing energy input in the reactor, reaction temperature and residence time of the exhaust gas in the reactor. Enhanced removal of the PM was achieved by filling the discharge gap of the reactor with Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst pellets. In addition, the removal of unburned hydrocarbons was studied. Finally, available approaches for PM conversion were analyzed involving the interactions between discharge and catalytic reactions.

Abstract:On the basis of corona discharge theory,a non-thermal plasma(NTP) reactor was designed.An experiment and measurement system,consisting of diesel engine,NTP reactor and electrostatic low voltage impacter(ELVI),was built up and used to examine effects of NTP on PM size, quantity and their distributions.Physical properties of the PM after NTP treatment were analyzed using experiment method for providing the theoretical basis to remove the PM aggregation.Results indicate that NTP can reduce PM quantity and mass densities by trapping and oxidation action,with NTP intension increasing its reduction function enhances.

Abstract:Based on the discovery of the nitrogen-containing organic compounds, plasma-facilitated catalytic reduction of NOx was optimized , including the influence of quartz-dielectric pellet packing in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor on the NOx removal efficiency of plasma-facilitated catalysis system for the NO/NO2/C2H4/O2/N2 gas system, and typical Ag/γ-Al2O3 catalyst used as lean NOx catalyst. Results show that packing quartz-dielectric pellet in DBD reactor facilitate more nitrogen-containing organic compound to produce in DBD reactor at lower energy density, to further improve the catalytic performance of catalyst at lower temperature and the NOx removal efficiency of plasma-facilitated catalysis system, the NOx removal efficiency reached more than 80% with catalyst temperature at 250°C. These phenomena are due to that quartz pellets packed in DBD reactor could enhance the partial discharge at lower voltages, promote the uniform distribution of the electric field and reacting gas stream in DBD reactor, and improve the contacting chance of the reacting gas stream with DBD plasma.

Abstract:Compared to diesel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), often used as an alternative fuel for marine engines, comes with significant advantages in reducing emissions of particulate matter (PM), SOx, CO2, and other pollutants. Promoting the use of LNG is of great significance for achieving carbon peaking and neutrality worldwide, as well as improving the energy structure. However, compared to diesel engines, medium- and high-speed marine LNG engines may produce higher methane (CH4) emissions and also have nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission issues. For the removal of CH4 and NOx from the exhaust of marine LNG engines, the traditional technical route of combining a methane oxidation catalyst (MOC) and an HN3 selective catalytic reduction system (NH3-SCR) will face problems, such as low conversion efficiency and high operation cost. In view of this, the technology of non-thermal plasma (NTP) combined with CH4-SCR is proposed. However, the synergistic mechanism between NTP and catalysts is still unclear, which limits the optimization of an NTP-CH4-SCR system. This article summarizes the synergistic mechanism of NTP and catalysts in the integrated treatment process of CH4 and NOx, including experimental analysis and numerical simulation. And the relevant impact parameters (such as electrode diameter, electrode shape, electrode material, and barrier material, etc.) of NTP reactor energy optimization are discussed. The work of this paper is of great significance for guiding the high-efficiency removal of CH4 and NOx for an NTP-CH4-SCR system.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel four-way plasma-catalytic removal of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide without external heating using a pulsed dielectric barrier discharge reactor combined with Au/CaSO4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst balls. With the optimized amount of Au and CaSO4, over 90% of particulate matter, 40% of nitrogen oxides, and nearly 100% of hydrocarbons were removed from the diesel engine exhaust, while the increase of carbon monoxide concentration due to the oxidation of particulate matter and hydrocarbons and the decomposition of carbon dioxide were minimized. Importantly, the performance of the plasma catalytic reactor was maintained without decline for the duration of the experiment (7 h) with an attractive cost/performance ratio. These findings offer a new approach to the simultaneous treatment of diesel exhausts and provide a novel concept for the design of a practical and compact after-treatment device for the diesel engine exhaust gases.

Abstract:Abstract Operation of marine diesel engines causes significant emission of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. It was noticed worldwide and the regulations concerning harmful emissions were introduced. There were several solutions elaborated; however, emission control for both SOx and NOx requires two distinctive processes realized in separated devices, which is problematic due to limited space on ship board and high overall costs. Therefore, the electron beam flue gas treatment (EBFGT) process was adopted to ensure the abatement of the problem of marine diesel off-gases. This novel solution combines two main processes: first the flue gas is irradiated with electron beam where NO and SO2 are oxidized; the second stage is wet scrubbing to remove both pollutants with high efficiency. Laboratory tests showed that this process could be effectively applied to remove SO2 and NOx from diesel engine off-gases. Different compositions of absorbing solution with three different oxidants (NaClO, NaClO2 and NaClO3) were tested. The highest NOx removal efficiency (>96%) was obtained when seawater-NaClO2-NaOH was used as scrubber solution at 10.9 kGy dose. The process was further tested in real maritime conditions at Riga shipyard, Latvia. More than 45% NOx was removed at a 5.5 kGy dose, corresponding to 4800 Nm3/h off-gases arising from ship emission. The operation of the plant was the first case of examination of the hybrid electron beam technology in real conditions. Taking into account the experiment conditions, good agreement was obtained with laboratory tests. The results obtained in Riga shipyard provided valuable information for the application of this technology for control of large cargo ship emission.

Abstract:To explore the mechanism underlying the removal of CH4 and NOx, which are typical emissions from LNG engines, through the nonthermal plasma method, aplasma chemistry model of CH4-NOx under the LNG engine exhaust environment was established in this study. Sixty key reactions affecting the conversion of CH4, CO, and NOx were determined through sensitivity analysis, and their pre-exponential factors were optimized using a genetic algorithm. The proposed model shows good performance in predicting the concentrations of CH4, CO, and NOx under the exhaust conditions of LNG engine. Then, reaction path analyses for evolution of CH4, CO, NO, and NO2 were performed under specific conditions. The results showed that CH4 mainly decomposed into CH2 that is subsequently converted into CO and CO2. CH2 is the main source for CO production. The concentration of NOx is determined by the oxidation reactions of N with O2, OH, and HO2. The specific concentration distributions of NO and NO2 were influenced by the oxidation-reduction reactions between them. Analyses of the time scales for the conversion processes of CH4, CO, and NOx were also conducted, and it was found that the reaction time scales of CH4 and CO were approximately 1×10 -10 -1×10 -5 s, and that was approximately 1×10 -9 -1×10 -4 s for NOx. Furthermore, during the overlapping period for the conversion of CH4, CO, and NOx, the NOx was dominant in the competition for O. This study provides a basis for the construction of a plasma catalytic chemistry model of CH4-NOx under LNG engine exhaust conditions.

Abstract:The traditional dielectric barrier discharge reactors with metal-grounded electrodes have the disadvantages of electrode ablation, short lifetime and poor stability, which limit the practical application of nonthermal plasma de-NO x technology. A coaxial cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge reactor with the NaCl solution-grounded electrode was constructed. The effects of simulated exhaust gas flow rate, O 2 concentration, NO concentration and NO 2 concentration on the de-NO x performance were studied. The mean electron energy of the NO x collision process was calculated. The reaction rate and energy loss fraction of the dissociation reactions of N 2 and O 2 were elaborated. The results show that the specific energy input for de-NO x gradually decreases with the exhaust gas flow rate. The NO x transformation trend with the increasing O 2 concentration is shown as efficient removal mode (de-NO x efficiency > 82%) → inefficient removal mode (de-NO x efficiency < 50%) → NO x growth mode. The N 2 dissociation reaction rate is greater than the O 2 dissociation reaction rate at oxygen-poor condition. The energy loss fractions of N 2 dissociation reaction can reach up to 8.5%. The energy consumption of removing NO per unit volume gradually decreases with the initial NO concentration. The specific energy required for 900 ppm NO is 1.8 times lower than the theoretical value. In addition, the reactor with liquid-grounded electrode shows excellent performance of de-NO x efficiency and energy consumption. This work provides support for advancing the application of liquid-electrode reactors.

Abstract:Industries’ air pollution causes serious challenges to modern society, among them exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, which are currently one of the main sources. This study proposes a non-thermal plasma (NTP) system for placement in the exhaust system of internal combustion engines to reduce the toxic contaminants (HC, CO, and NOx) of exhaust gases. This NTP system generates a high-voltage discharge that not only responds to the ion chemical reaction to eliminate NOx and CO, but that also generates a combustion reaction at the local high temperature of plasma to reduce HC. The NTP system was designed on both the front and rear of the exhaust pipe to analyze the difference of different exhaust flow rates under the specified frequency. The results indicate that the NTP system can greatly reduce toxic contaminants. The NTP reactor placed in the front of exhaust pipe gave HC and CO removal efficiency of about 34.5% and 16.0%, respectively, while the NTP reactor placed in the rear of exhaust pipe gave NOx removal efficiency of about 41.3%. In addition, the voltage and material directly affect the exhaust gases obviously. In conclusion, the proposed NTP system installed in the exhaust system can significantly reduce air pollutants. These results suggest that applying NTP to the combustion engine should be a useful tool to simultaneously reduce both emissions of NOx and CO.

Study on Ship Exhaust Gas Denitrification Technology Based on Vapor-Phase Oxidation and Liquid-Phase Impingement Absorption

Abstract:A system combining gas-phase oxidation and liquid-phase collision absorption for removing NO from marine diesel engine exhaust was proposed. This method was the first to utilize different physical states of the same mixed solution to achieve both pre-oxidation and impingement reduction absorption of exhaust gases. During the pre-oxidation stage, a mixture of (NH4)2S2O8 and urea solution was atomized into a spray using an ultrasonic nebulizer to increase the contact area between the oxidant and the exhaust gas, thereby efficiently pre-oxidizing the exhaust gas in the gas phase. In the liquid-phase absorption stage, the (NH4)2S2O8 and urea solution was used in an impingement absorption process, which not only enhanced gas–liquid mass transfer efficiency but also effectively inhibited the formation of nitrates. Experimental results showed that, without increasing the amount of absorbent used, the maximum NO removal efficiency of this method reached 97% (temperature, 343 K; (NH4)2S2O8 concentration, 0.1 mol/L; urea concentration, 1.5 mol/L; NO concentration, 1000 ppm; pH, 7; impinging stream velocity, 15 m/s), compared to 72% using the conventional liquid-phase oxidation absorption method. Additionally, this method required only the addition of a nebulizer and two opposing nozzles to the existing desulfurization tower to achieve simultaneous removal of sulfur and nitrogen oxides from the exhaust gas, with low retrofitting costs making it favorable for practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Herein, a novel process of diesel exhaust purification by non-thermal plasma combined with wood fiber has been investigated to understand the effect of purification efficiency on the emission. The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and wood fiber (WF) improved removal efficiency of nitrogen oxide (NOx) owing to the positive activity of oxygen-containing functional groups (such as O–H groups or C–O groups) on the wood surface, which promoted the removal of NOx by 10%–13%. The mechanism to remove NOx in the presence of wood fibers was also deduced through FTIR spectra. When carbon black was loaded on the wood fiber, there was simultaneous removal of carbon soot and NOX. Although complete purification was not achieved, a high purification efficiency was obtained under the conditions of room temperature and no catalysts. These advantages highlight the importance of use of wood and non-thermal plasma (NTP), and this research work opens new avenues in the field of emissions treatment.

Abstract:The synergistic effect of plasma-facilitated C_2H_4 selective catalytic reduction(SCR) of NO_x over Ag/γ-Al_2O_3 catalyst at lower catalyst temperature was studied for the NO/NO_2/C_2H_4/O_2/N_2 gas system,and a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) reactor was used as plasma reactor.Results showed that plasma-facilitated catalysis system for NO_x removal exhibited obvious synergistic effect at 240 ℃.Based on the analysis of the products of plasma pre-activation,the synergistic link products included three kinds of chemical compound like NO_2,aldehydes(formaldehyde and acetaldehyde),nitrogen-contained organic compounds(methyl nitrate,nitro methyl and ethyl nitrate).The removal of NO_x in DBD plasma reactor means that nitrogen-contained organic compounds yield.During the process of plasma pre-activation,improving the input energy density of DBD reactor or initial C_2H_4 concentration facilitated the conversion of NO_2 to nitrogencontained organic compounds and the formation of aldehydes,further improving the NO_x removal efficiency of plasma-facilitated catalysis system.
Characteristics of emissive spectrum and the removal of nitric oxide in N2/02/NO plasma with argon additive

Abstract:Although the approach using non-thermal plasma (NTP) for deNOx has been studied for over 15 years, how to achieve higher removal efficiency with lower cost is still a barrier for its industrial application. In order to investigate the impact of the argon additive on electron density, energy and nitric oxide reduction process in plasma, the spectrum of the dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure in a coaxial reactor was measured using the monochromater with high resolution. The comparative experiments for NO reduction were carried out simultaneously in N2/O2/NO plasma stream with and without argon, respectively. The nitrogen molecular spectrum which is attributed to the energy level transition (C3pi(u)-->B3pi(g)) was compared in the wavelength range 300-480 nm and the electron density and temperature were determined based on the relative intensities and Stark broadening width of spectral lines. The spectrum results indicated that the argon additive could enhance the intensity of emissive spectrum of plasma, thus the electron concentration as well as the energy was increased, and finally prompted the ionization rate to produce active N, O and O3. The results of NO reduction showed that NO conversion efficiency increased in the range of 10%-30% with 5% addition of argon in stream comparing with the condition without argon additive. This study will play a positive role in the industrial application of dielectric barrier discharge deNOx reactor.

Abstract:Role of nitrogen-containing organic compounds produced during the plasma process on the subsequent of C2H4-SCR of NOx over Ag/γ-Al2O3 catalyst at 523K was studied in a two-stage plasma-facilitated catalysis system. Results showed that nitrogen-containing organic compounds (methyl nitrate, ethyl nitrate, nitro methyl) produced in the plasma reactor can improve the subsequent catalytic performance at lower temperature besides NO2 and aldehyde; more the amounts of nitrogen-containing organic compounds produced after plasma pretreatment, more the amounts of N2 produced in the subsequent catalysis process, and N2 selectivity leveled at about 82%.

Abstract:High gravity technology, as a process intensification technology, has demonstrated the great advantages in the field of gas purification on account of its excellent mass transfer efficiency and energy-efficient, but it is rarely applied in the field of nitrogen oxides (NOx) purification of marine diesel engine exhaust. In this paper, a high-gravity bowl-shaped-disk rotating bed (HBRB) without catalytic was designed for diesel exhaust after-treatment. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) was installed in the front of the HBRB to regenerate more nitrogen dioxide (NO2) easily reduced by urea. A bench test of a 6-cylinder marine diesel engine with the HBRB was carried out. The effects of the HBRB speeds, urea concentrations, and engine operating conditions on NOx purification efficiency in engine exhaust were experimentally investigated. The experimental result indicates that the maximum NOx removal efficiency of the HBRB can reach 69.1%. The improvement of the NOx removal efficiency is not obvious at the HBRB speed of over 1500 r/min. The pre-oxidation degree of nitric oxide (NO) and urea concentration largely affect the NOx removal efficiency. The HBRB has great potential in marine diesel engine exhaust denitration.
Formation and Evolution of Thermal and Fuel Nitrogen Oxides in the Turbulent Combustion Field of Ammonia Internal Combustion Engines

Abstract:Ammonia is a zero-carbon candidate fuel for the decarbonization of internal combustion (IC) engines. A concern when using ammonia in IC engines is the increased emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX), due to the additional nitrogen in the ammonia molecule. Compared to conventional petroleum such as gasoline and diesel, ammonia combustion adds the fuel NOX formation mechanism in addition to the original thermal NOX generation pathway, which further complicates the NOX emission characteristics of ammonia engines. Decoupling fuel NOX and thermal NOX helps to increase the understanding of the formation and evolutionary characteristics of nitrogen oxides occurring inside ammonia engines, but the available literature lacks studies in this respect. The purpose of this study is to fill this research gap and to propose a methodology for decoupling fuel NOX and thermal NOX. In brief, an artificial elemental nitrogen is applied to the Zeldovich mechanism and to the diatomic nitrogen in the combustion air, which allows the formation of NOX from the elemental nitrogen in the ammonia fuel to be separated from the NOX formed from the nitrogen in the air. A three dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach and investigates the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of thermal NOX and fuel NOX in the turbulent combustion field of ammonia engines. The in-cylinder activity analysis suggests that this separation of the NOX formation mechanism slightly alters the nitrogen-based chemistry, which is unavoidable. However, this approach still allows a reasonable characterization of the formation and evolution of fuel NOX and thermal NOX. The simulations show that fuel NOX is formed during ammonia oxidation because fuel NOX is an intermediate species, while thermal NOX has a high concentration in the burned zone because it is related to the temperature and the residence time of nitrogen at that temperature, both of which are expected and support the successful decoupling of fuel and atmospheric nitrogen. In addition, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions come from the fuel NOX mechanism and are mainly distributed along the liner walls as it is formed by partial oxidation of ammonia released from the crevices during the late oxidation process. Moreover, the concentrations of both thermal and fuel-based nitrogen monoxide vary with the chemical equilibrium that changes with piston motion, and their concentrations are always comparable. As a result, combustion strategies for ammonia internal combustion engines needs to consider both thermal and fuel NOX reduction mechanisms, where the main difficulty is the N2O reduction. Catalytic combustion mode may be a viable strategy to improve the oxidation efficiency of the ammonia fuel trapped in the crevice and reduce N2O emissions in the cylinder.
