Abstract:With the simplification and diversification of separation technologies, nanocellulose membranes have become widely used as insulating materials. Recently, study of nanocellulose membrane modification has become a hot topic. However, the application of nanocellulose membrane has been limited due to their inadequate heat resistance and flexibility. Herein, based on the pyrolytic and thermoplastic properties of cellulose, we innovatively introduced a salt barrier scheme to regulate the degree of hydrogen bonding and thermoplastic bonding between fibers. This was achieved by adding a salt barrier agent, NaCl, in the middle of the nanocellulose to prepare and obtain flexible, high-temperature-resistant nanocellulose film materials. The full-component cellulose films thus prepared exhibited high tensile strength (8 MPa), excellent flexibility (105 mN), high electrical breakdown strength (67 KV/mm), and volume resistivity meeting the standard of insulation materials (3.23 × 1013 Ω·m). This scheme adheres to the principles of low cost, green, non-toxic and non-hazardous, providing a brand new approach for the research and development of high temperature resistant cellulose membrane materials, which is of significant commercial value and industrialization prospect.

Abstract:Cellulose, a sustainable raw material, holds great promise as an ideal candidate for membrane materials. This work focused on establishing a green route for fabricating cellulose nanofiltration membranes by reusing a binary solvent of a mixture of ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The rheological and thermodynamic properties of cellulose solutions were thoroughly investigated to gain fundamental insights into cellulose membrane formation using a mixture solvent. The morphologies and separation performances of the cellulose membranes were also studied. Based on these results, we successfully developed a cellulose membrane with a remarkable water flux of 101.8 L/m(2)-h, and the rejections for both Congo Red and Evans Blue were higher than 99.7%. Furthermore, the cellulose membrane demonstrated excellent antifouling performance and stability in long-term operation. Moreover, we conducted an attempt on the recycling and reuse of IL and DMSO, revealing that the structure and separation performance of the cellulose membrane produced using the recovered solvent were comparable to those of the membrane obtained using the original solvent. These results highlighted a sustainable approach to fabricating high-performance cellulose membranes.

Abstract:Transparent films or substrates are ubiquitously used in photonics and optoelectronics, with glass and plastics as traditional choice of materials. Transparent films made of cellulose nanofibers are reported recently. However, all these films are isotropic in nature. This work, for the first time, reports a remarkably facile and effective approach to fabricating anisotropic transparent films directly from wood. The resulting films exhibit an array of exceptional optical and mechanical properties. The well‐aligned cellulose nanofibers in natural wood are maintained during delignification, leading to an anisotropic film with high transparency (≈90% transmittance) and huge intensity ratio of transmitted light up to 350%. The anisotropic film with well‐aligned cellulose nanofibers has a mechanical tensile strength of up to 350 MPa, nearly three times of that of a film with randomly distributed cellulose nanofibers. Atomistic mechanics modeling further reveals the dependence of the film mechanical properties on the alignment of cellulose nanofibers through the film thickness direction. This study also demonstrates guided liquid transport in a mesoporous, anisotropic wood film and its possible application in enabling new nanoelectronic devices. These unique and highly desirable properties of the anisotropic transparent film can potentially open up a range of green electronics and nanofluidics.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibrils are attractive as building blocks for advanced photonic, optoelectronic, microfluidic, and bio-based devices ranging from transistors and solar cells to fluidic and biocompatible injectable devices. For the first time, an ultrastrong and ultratough cellulose film, which is composed of densely packed bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibrils with hierarchical fibril alignments, is successfully demonstrated. The molecular level alignment stems from the intrinsic parallel orientation of crystalline cellulose molecules produced by Acetobacter xylinum. These aligned long-chain cellulose molecules form subfibrils with a diameter of 2-4 nm, which are further aligned to form nanofibril bundles. The BC film yields a record-high tensile strength (approximate to 1.0 GPa) and toughness (approximate to 25 MJ m(-3)). Being ultrastrong and ultratough, yet the BC film is also highly flexible and can be folded into desirable shapes. The BC film exhibits a controllable manner of alignment and is highly transparent with modulated optical properties, paving the way to enabling new functionalities in mechanical, electrical, fluidic, photonics, and biocompatible applications.

Abstract:Cellulose is a renewable, biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable material. A bamboo cellulose-based nanofiltration membrane (LBL-NF-CS/BCM) was prepared with a combination of layer-by-layer assembly and spraying methods. The chemical structure, morphology, and surface charge of the resultant LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes were characterized based on Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Scanning (XPS). The nanofiltration performance of the LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes was evaluated using 500 ppm NaCl solutions under 0.3 MPa pressure. It was found that the LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes had a rejection rate of about 36.11 % against a 500 ppm NaCl solution under the conditions tested, and membrane flux of about 12.08 L/(m<sup>2</sup> h) was reached. The combined layer-by-layer assembly and spraying provides a scalable and convenient process concept for nanofiltration membrane fabrication.

Abstract:The cross-linking coating modification strategy was adopted to construct an environmentally sustainable bamboo cellulose-based composite nanofiltration membrane (CL-NF-BCM), with bamboo cellulose providing as the support material. Solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR) results show that alginate (ALG) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were successfully cross-linked onto the cellulose membrane. Furthermore, the transfer of chemical elements was confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The microscopic morphology illustrates that after cross-linking coating modification, the surface of the bamboo cellulose membrane turns from a uniform porous structure to a polymerized layer with interwoven network structure. In addition, the result of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) shows that the average pore size of the as-prepared CL-NF-BCM of about 1.1 nm. The performance testing results show that the CL-NF-BCM cellulose membrane had a rejection of 48% against 500 ppm NaCl solution and membrane flux of 17 L·m−2·h−1 under a nanofiltration condition of 0.5 MPa operating pressure. This work enriches a high value-added application of bamboo products, as well as provides a novel perspective for membrane surface modification.

Abstract:Two-dimensional membranes with nanofluidic channels and a high chemical stability are strongly needed in many practical applications. We present a facile vacuum filtration method to fabricate a lamellar hybrid microstructure with cellulose nanofibers and graphene oxide sheets. The flexible and free-standing composite membrane obtained has uniformly distributed interstitial voids that provide nanofluidic channels for ion transport. The systematic measurement of the ionic currents through the nanofluidic channels with various electrolytes at different concentrations establish the surface-charge-governed ion-transport behavior. The ionic conductivity through the nanofluidic channels at lower concentrations (<= 10(-4) M) can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude and appears to be independent of the concentration of the bulk electrolytes because of the successful hybridization of the negatively charged and permselective nanochannels. The resulting devices have an excellent chemical stability and maintain a stable ionic conductivity even after immersion in basic or acidic solutions at high concentrations (1 M) for half a month. Moreover, the activation energy and proton mobility provide additional confirmations that the hybrid nanofluidic channels lower the energy barrier for ion transport. The excellent performance of the membrane makes it an outstanding candidate for stable and flexible nanofluidic devices as well as other potential applications.
Eco-Friendly Bioinspired Interface Design for High-Performance Cellulose Nanofibril/Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites

Abstract:Inspired by a wood-like multicomponent structure, an interface-reinforced method was developed to fabricate high-performance cellulose nanofibril (CNF)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites. Holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs) with core–shell structure were first obtained from bagasse via mild delignification and mechanical defibration process. The well-preserved native hemicellulose as the amphiphilic shell of HCNFs could act as a binding agent, sizing agent, and even dispersing agent between HCNFs and CNTs. Remarkably, both the tensile strength at high relative humidity (83% RH) and electrical conductivity of the HCNF/CNT nanocomposites were significantly improved up to 121 MPa and 321 S/m, respectively, demonstrating great superiority compared to normal CNF/CNT composite films. Highly Ion-Conductive Anion Exchange Membranes with Superior Mechanical Properties Based on Polymeric Ionic Liquid Filled Functionalized Bacterial Cellulose for Alkaline Fuel Cells

Abstract:How to simultaneously improve the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties is a key problem facing currently used anion-exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, biomass-based bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as a porous template to make TiO2 localized minerali-zation around the surface of BC nanofibers, and constructed a TiO2-coated BC porous substrate (TiO2@BC) with hierarchical structure. Then, the coated TiO2 nanoparticles was densely grafted by quaternary ammonium groups to obtain high ionic conduction ability. After filling with a polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) with high ion exchange capacity through in situ polymerization and crosslinking, the obtained novel PIL-filled AEM possessed ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 100.5 mS cm -1 at 80 degrees C, which was 72.1% higher than that of the PIL-filled pure BC membrane (only 58.4 mS cm -1). Moreover, by the aid of the synergistic reinforcement effect of TiO2@BC, the membrane exhibited extremely high dry strength of 95.3 MPa and satisfactory wet strength and flexibility. When at fully hydrate state, the membrane with the size of 1 x 4 cm (width x length) can hang a bottle containing 1000 g of water. The single cell equipped with this membrane output the peak power density of 40.2 mW cm -2, showing its great potential as a high-performance biomass-based AEM.(c) 2023 The Authors. Cellulose Nanocrystal Composite Membrane Enhanced with In Situ Grown Metal-Organic Frameworks for Osmotic Energy Conversion

Abstract:Access to clean and renewable energy, osmotic energy from salinity gradient difference, for example, is central to the sustainability of human civilization. Despite numerous examples of nanofluidic membranes for osmotic energy conversion, one produced from abundant and renewable biomass resources remains largely unexplored. In this work, cotton-derived cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are employed to fabricate a membrane by self-assembly with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and subsequent in situ growth of metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-(COOH)2, to provide an example. The composite membrane exhibits excellent mechanical strength and toughness due to the long chains and hydrogen bonding interactions of PVA. The incorporation of UiO-66-(COOH)2 endows the composite membrane with abundant nano- and subnano-sized ion transport channels, resulting in a 150% increase in ion conductance, while also providing superior cation selectivity through collaboration with the sulfated CNCs. The composite membrane with 27.4% MOF content can achieve an osmotic energy conversion performance of 5.10 W m-2 under a 50-fold KCl gradient condition and a monovalent cation selectivity of ≈16 for K+/Mg2+. This work presents a solution for harvesting renewable osmotic energy by constructing nanofluidic membranes using plentiful renewable biomass materials and a simple, low-emission fabrication procedure.

Abstract:In recent years, renewable cellulose-based ion exchange membranes have emerged as promising candidates for capturing green, abundant osmotic energy. However, the low power density and structural/performance instability are challenging for such cellulose membranes. Herein, cellulose-molecule self-assembly engineering (CMA) is developed to construct environmentally friendly, durable, scalable cellulose membranes (CMA membranes). Such a strategy enables CMA membranes with ideal nanochannels (∼7 nm) and tailored channel lengths, which support excellent ion selectivity and ion fluxes toward high-performance osmotic energy harvesting. Finite element simulations also verified the function of tailored nanochannel length on osmotic energy conversion. Correspondingly, our CMA membrane shows a high-power density of 2.27 W/m2 at a 50-fold KCl gradient and super high voltage of 1.32 V with 30-pair CMA membranes (testing area of 22.2 cm2). In addition, the CMA membrane demonstrates long-term structural and dimensional integrity in saline solution, due to their high wet strength (4.2 MPa for N-CMA membrane and 0.5 MPa for P-CMA membrane), and correspondingly generates ultrastable yet high power density more than 100 days. The self-assembly engineering of cellulose molecules constructs high-performance ion-selective membranes with environmentally friendly, scalable, high wet strength and stability advantages, which guide sustainable nanofluidic applications beyond the blue energy.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membrane (NFM) is an effective and advanced semi-permeable membrane (pore size: 1 ~ 2 nm) for deep purification of drinking water due to their low operating pressure and high divalent salt ion rejection. In this work, a stable cellulose-based polyamide nanofiltration membrane (NF-PDA-RCM) with a unique three-layered structure was prepared for advanced treatment of drinking water, via the method of chemical bond connection followed by the interfacial polymerization strategy. The regenerated cellulose membrane (RCM), as the supporting layer of NFM, prepared by phase inversion method has good physical compatibility and abundant porous channels. Further, the flux of NFM can be controlled by adjusting the pore size of the RCM. Through Michael addition reaction, the supporting layer and the active layer of NF-PDA-RCM are connected by the covalent bonds, resulting in a great improvement in the stability of NF-PDA-RCM. The resultant NF-PDA-RCM has increased rejection rate of MgSO<sub>4</sub> (enhanced about 9.3%) and water-flux (enhanced about 78.5%) compared with that of no polydopamine (PDA) modified NFM. The RCM are completely biodegradable, allowing the NF-PDA-RCM to be a promising candidate for treating drinking water.

Abstract:It is well-known that cellulose is difficult to dissolve in common organic solvent and be directly processed into porous membrane. In this work, using ionic liquid, 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) as solvent, high flux and anti-fouling cellulose nanofiltration (NF) membranes were fabricated by phase inversion method from 8.0 wt.% of cellulose/AMIMCl solutions. Pure water was employed as the non-solvent in phase inversion process. From the result of polarized light microscopy, we found that cellulose was completely dissolved in the AMIMCl at 90 degrees C. The characterizations of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopies showed that no obvious changes occurred in the chemical structure of cellulose after membrane formation, but the crystallinity had a remarkable decreased. Membrane morphologies of the fabricated cellulose membranes including the cross-section and the surface were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the AMIMCl had a distinctive effect on phase inversion process and the cellulose selective layer displayed a macrovoid-free and relatively dense layered structure. Based on the filtration experimental results, the pure water permeation flux of the membranes reached 128.5 L/m(2)h under 0.4 MPa, and the molecular weight cut-off was less than 700 Da. The membranes exhibited a good stability and anti-fouling ability in water-phase separation process, and were suitable as NF membranes to separate the organic compounds with a medium molecular weight. Abstract:Supramolecular frameworks have been widely synthesized for ion transport applications. However, conventional approaches of constructing ion transport pathways in supramolecular frameworks typically require complex processes and display poor scalability, high cost, and limited sustainability. Here, we report the scalable and cost-effective synthesis of an ion-conducting (e.g., Na+) cellulose-derived supramolecule (Na-CS) that features a three-dimensional, hierarchical, and crystalline structure composed of massively aligned, one-dimensional, and ångström-scale open channels. Using wood-based Na-CS as a model material, we achieve high ionic conductivities (e.g., 0.23 S/cm in 20 wt% NaOH at 25 °C) even with a highly dense microstructure, in stark contrast to conventional membranes that typically rely on large pores (e.g., submicrometers to a few micrometers) to obtain comparable ionic conductivities. This synthesis approach can be universally applied to a variety of cellulose materials beyond wood, including cotton textiles, fibers, paper, and ink, which suggests excellent potential for a number of applications such as ion-conductive membranes, ionic cables, and ionotronic devices.

Abstract:Biomass-based membranes have attracted increasing attentions due to their cheap and sustainable advantages. In this work, a novel thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane was fabricated through a facial interfacial polymerization (IP) process by initiate the crosslinking reaction between collagen fibers (CFs) and tannic acid (TA). The increased TA concentrations endowed the TFC membrane with a higher crosslinking degree, a thicker active layer and a rougher top surface. At optimized condition with 0.60 mg TA decoration, the TFC-3 membrane exhibited a high water permeability of 23.49 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 with high rejections above 98.0% for congo red, reactive blue 19, coomassie blue G-250, and methyl blue. Furthermore, the membrane preserved remarkable salt retentions (93.3% for Na 2 SO 4 , 83.4% for MgSO 4 , 36.2% for MgCl 2 , and 26.4% for NaCl) and satisfying operation stability. This facial fabrication method offered a new insight to employ biomass for molecular precise separation.

Abstract:Membranes organized by rigid cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), the highly crystalline nano-objects, exhibit a wide range of potential applications attributed to their numerous advantages including excellent hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, high crystallinity, and superior strength. However, the correlation between mechanical stiffness and structural arrangements for CNC-based membranes is still a challenge, particularly in a predictive manner for the tailored macroscale performance. This study proposes a strategy of regulating the surface properties, charges and stiffness of CNC composite membranes with the incorporation of the zwitterion and chitin nanofibrils (ChNFs) components. The synthesized zwitterion ( n , n -dipropionate methyl ester octadecylamine) endows the modified CNCs with a pH-sensitively charged surface, displaying the cationic form in the acidic condition while converted to anionic surface in the alkaline state. The ionic "bridge" between semi-flexible nanofibrils and rigid CNCs can effectively reduce the nanohardness of the composite membranes, taking the uniform surface and microstructural morphologies.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) with a high water permeation flux and salt rejection are extremely desirable due to their low energy consumption and superior separation efficiency in practical applications. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prepared by the sulfuric acid hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose were directly incorporated in the aqueous solution of piperazine for fabricating thin film nanocomposite (TFN) NFMs by interfacial polymerization. The as-fabricated TFN NFMs exhibit obviously rougher and more hydrophilic surfaces compared with those thin film composite membranes without CNCs, resulting in a drastic increase of water permeation flux (106.9 L·m–2·h–1) while keeping a reasonable salt rejection to Na2SO4 (98.3%) and MgSO4 (96.1%). Abstract:The redox flow battery (RFB) has emerged as one of the promising rechargeable energy storage devices. Ion-selective membranes play a pivotal role in RFB regarding their capacity, cycle performance, and cost of production. However, to achieve large-scale commercialization of RFB, it is imperative but remains challenging to develop the next generation of economically efficient and environmentally friendly membranes with outstanding ion transport performance. Here, we report a renewable ion-selective membrane fabricated from wood-derived nanocellulose. The appropriate nanopore size combined with abundant surface charge realized by a chemical cross-linking approach enables membranes with ultralow permeability of redox molecules. As a result, this nanocellulose membrane demonstrates excellent feasibility in an aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) by using 4,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,3-disulfonate as catholyte and alizarin red S as anolyte. More significantly, the nanocellulose membrane indeed outperforms the commercial Nafion 115 membrane including higher capacity and better cycle stability. In addition to the highlighted electrochemical performance of nanocellulose membranes in RFBs, the renewable nanocellulose materials will facilitate AORFB toward sustainable development.

Abstract:For thousands of years, wood has been utilized as a natural, abundant, and sustainable material for structural construction and furniture. To enhance its value, we have developed a simple process that can directly convert low-value wood (including cracked wood, chips, shives, and other wood residues) into high-performance allcellulose ionogels. This process involves delignification, in situ dissolution of cellulose, and self-assembly of molecular cellulose chains. The resulting ionogel exhibits excellent properties such as high ion conductivity (-60 mS/cm), mechanical strength (-6 MPa), and self-healing capability (-10 min). Notably, it also demonstrates exceptional freeze tolerance, withstanding temperatures as low as -50 degrees C while maintaining high ion conductivity (-6.4 mS/cm). The ionogel is a versatile substrate for flexible electronic circuits. We have developed a sensor utilizing this ionogel that is breathable, flexible, and highly responsive to temperature, humidity, and strain. Furthermore, we have used it as a gel electrolyte to create supercapacitors with exceptional performance even in low-temperature conditions. The ionic liquid can be reused, with an all-cellulose framework that breaks down naturally in moist soil within 15 days. This sustainable method of producing high-performance ionogels from low-value wood has immense potential in shaping the next generation of soft, intelligent devices.
