Abstract:Thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes incorporated with NaY zeolite nanoparticles were prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) of trimesoyl chloride and m-phenylenediamine on nanoporous polysulfone supports. The isolated zeolite-filled polyamide layer was observed by transmission electron microscopy, and the nanoparticles dispersed in the dense nodular polyamide on the polysulfone side. The effects of IP reaction time and zeolite loading on membrane separation performance were investigated. The results showed that a longer IP reaction time was necessary to form a denser zeolite–polyamide layer for higher salt rejection, and the optimum zeolite loading was determined to be 0.15wt%. Under the optimum conditions, the water flux increased from 0.95 to 1.78m3/m2/day (23.3 to 43.7gal/ft2/day (gfd)) with the incorporation of the zeolite nanoparticles, while providing a high salt rejection of 98.8% (2000ppm NaCl solution, 225psi (1.55MPa), 25°C). The TFN membranes were then post-treated with aqueous solutions containing glycerol, camphorsulfonic acid-triethylamine salt, and sodium lauryl sulfate to further improve the water flux. By optimizing the post-treatment solution composition, an improved brackish water desalination performance was achieved with 2.06m3/m2/day (50.6gfd) water flux, which was more than double compared to that of the TFC membrane without the zeolite nanoparticles, along with 98.4% salt rejection.
Polyamide Nanofiltration Membranes Incorporated with Cellulose Nanocrystals for Enhanced Water Flux and Chlorine Resistance

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) with a high water permeation flux and salt rejection are extremely desirable due to their low energy consumption and superior separation efficiency in practical applications. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prepared by the sulfuric acid hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose were directly incorporated in the aqueous solution of piperazine for fabricating thin film nanocomposite (TFN) NFMs by interfacial polymerization. The as-fabricated TFN NFMs exhibit obviously rougher and more hydrophilic surfaces compared with those thin film composite membranes without CNCs, resulting in a drastic increase of water permeation flux (106.9 L·m–2·h–1) while keeping a reasonable salt rejection to Na2SO4 (98.3%) and MgSO4 (96.1%). Abstract:To overcome the permeability-selectivity limitation and improve the performance of desalination membranes, novel methods and design strategies are needed to prepare new types of thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, a modified TFC membrane with a sandwiched layer and a surface layer was fabricated through a facile additional two-step approach. The microfiltration (MF) substrate and TFC surface were modified by a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) sandwiched layer and a polydopamine (PDA) layer, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis indicated that the support modified by CNCs presented a more homogeneous surface than the control TFC. Cross-sectional SEM images showed that the underneath MF support, CNC interlayer, polyamide layer and PDA deposition layer were perfectly integrated. The surface charge was determined by an electrophoretic analyzer and revealed that the CNC interlayer increased the membrane electronegativity, while the PDA layer presented the opposite effect. Compared to the control TFC membrane, the solute permeability and rejection of the resultant CNC-TFC-PDA membrane were simultaneously increased, indicating a breakthrough in the trade-off limitation. The modified membranes exhibited a high removal rate for Congo red, Rose Bengal, sodium lignosulfonate and alkaline lignin, suggesting their excellent rejection performance for textile dyes and lignin derivatives. Fouling tests indicated that both the interlayer and surface layer exhibited positive effects on fouling alleviation. The effects of each functional layer were explored, and the main factors for performance improvement, including the modified hydrophilicity, surface charge, pore size and surface roughness, were discussed.
Robust and Highly Efficient Free‐Standing Carbonaceous Nanofiber Membranes for Water Purification

Abstract:The removal of dye and toxic ionic pollutants from water is an extremely important issue. A simple filtration process to decontaminate water by employing a free-standing fibrous membrane fabricated from highly uniform carbonaceous nanofibers (CNFs) is demonstrated. This process combines the excellent adsorption behavior of CNFs and the advantages of membrane filtration over conventional adsorption techniques, which include simple scale-up, reduced time, and lower energy consumption. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the CNFs exhibited larger adsorption capacities than commercial granular active carbon (GAC) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) because of their large surface area, high uniformity, and numerous active sites on the surface of nanofibers. Membrane filtration experiments proved that the CNF membranes could remove methylene blue (MB) efficiently at a very high flux of 1580 L m(-2) h(-1), which is 10-100 times higher than that of commercial nano-or ultrafiltration membranes with similar rejection properties. The high permeability of CNF membrane permits stacking of membranes to improve adsorption capacity. In addition, the CNF membranes are easily regenerated and remain unaltered in adsorption performance over six successive cycles of dye adsorption, desorption, and washing. Given the high adsorption and regenerability performance of the CNF membrane, it should have potential applications in water purification.
In-situ incorporating zwitterionic nanocellulose into polyamide nanofiltration membrane towards excellent perm-selectivity and antifouling performances

Abstract:It remains a huge challenge to develop a high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membrane with excellent perm-selectivity and antifouling properties. Herein, we report a novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane by in-situ incorporating zwitterionic nanocellulose during interfacial polymerization. Unlike commonly-used nanomaterials, the zwitterionic nanocellulose anchored with both quaternary ammonium and phosphate group is able to be well dispersible in water to ensure the formation of defect-free separation layer. The resultant membrane exhibited not only increased water permeance (14.4 L m‐ −2 h−1 bar−1) but enhanced divalent salt rejection (R Na2SO4 = 98.3%) owing to the increased surface hydrophilicity and high surface area as well as the extra hydrophilic interfacial nanochannels. With the assistance of high monovalent ion permeability endowed by zwitterions, this TFN membrane also behaved highly efficient antibiotic desalination with elevated separation factor of around 4.3. Moreover, the antifouling capability and cleaning recovery ability was greatly improved when both of the negatively and positively charged bovine serum albumin were utilized as foulants. Under the synergism of nanocellulose and zwitterions, therefore, the developed membrane in this work possessed superior perm-selectivity and antifouling properties, which would have promising potentials in separation fields.

Abstract:The thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane is a novel kind of membrane that has been extensively studied in recent years and broadly applied in desalination and wastewater treatment. The improvement of separation performance by optimizing the structure and morphology of NF membranes can significantly reduce energy consumption and bring more economic benefits. In this work, glutaraldehyde (GA) was used to crosslink polyethyleneimine (PEI) and dextran nanoparticles (DNPs) to construct an interfacial coating interlayer on polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration (UF) substrate. Subsequently, the polyamide (PA) NF membranes were fabricated by interfacial polymerization (IP) between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). DNPs were semi-encapsulated in the PEI coating and the exposed nanoparticles would be embedded in the PA layer for forming interfacial channels after IP. The interlayer not only affected the adsorption and diffusion of aqueous phase monomers to form a thin membrane, but also improved the membrane density to prevent selective defects associated with the incorporation of nanoparticles. The pure water permeance of the interlayered-TFC NF membrane was determined as 313.3 Lm−2h−1MPa−1, which was approximately four-fold that of the pristine membrane. The retention rate of various divalent salts of the NF membrane also significantly improved, and the retention rate of Na2SO4 exceeded 99%. This innovative method of interlayer modification has exhibited great potential in rapid desalination and wastewater recovery, providing new possibilities for the preparation of industrial high-performance NF membranes.

Abstract:The deepening crisis of freshwater resources has been driving the further development of new types of membrane-based desalination technologies represented by nanofiltration membranes. Solving the existing trade-off limitation on enhancing the water permeance and the rejection of salts is currently one of the most concerned research interests. Here, a facile and scalable approach is proposed to tune the interfacial polymerization by constructing a calcium alginate hydrogel layer on the porous substrates. The evenly coated thin hydrogel layer can not only store amine monomers like the aqueous phase but also suppress the diffusion of amine monomers inside, as well as provide a flat and stable interface to implement the interfacial polymerization. The resultant polyamide nanofilms have a relatively smooth morphology, negatively charged surface, and reduced thickness which facilitate a fast water permeation while maintaining rejection efficiency. As a result, the as-prepared composite membranes show improved water permeance (~30 Lm−2h−1bar−1) and comparable rejection of Na2SO4 (>97%) in practical applications. It is proved to be a feasible approach to manufacturing high-performance nanofiltration membranes with the assist of alginate hydrogel regulating interfacial polymerization.
Highly permeable polyamide nanofiltration membrane incorporated with phosphorylated nanocellulose for enhanced desalination

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with excellent permeability and selectivity are highly desirable for the efficient separation but still remain a great challenge. Herein, a novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane with excellent permeability and enhanced desalination was prepared by in-situ incorporating phosphorylated cellulose nanofibers (P–CNF) during interfacial polymerization. The unique attributes of P–CNF, especially the well dispersibility in water, excellent hydrophilicity and highly negative charges, were propitious to the formation of defect-free separation layer with hydrophilic nanochannels and high surface charge density. The composite membrane obtained thereby exhibited not only enhanced permeance of up to 17.0 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 but a high rejection of 95.4% for Na2SO4, successfully overcoming the trade-off effect between permeability and selectivity. Importantly, a low rejection of down to 5.3% for NaCl was achieved for the membrane due to a slight increase in effective pore size. Therefore, this composite membrane demonstrated elevated separation factor of up to 18.0 towards mono/divalent salts, 3–6 times higher than those of the reported TFN membranes and commercial NF membranes. Additionally, this membrane displayed highly efficient antibiotic desalination, suggesting its promising potential in pharmaceutical fields. As a result, the incorporation of P–CNF yielded a great enhancement to the water permeance and desalination ability of the polyamide membranes by tuning the microstructure. This work provided a novel biobased green nanomaterial for the fabrication of advanced NF membrane with outstanding perm-selectivity. The developed highly selective and permeable NF membrane has huge potentials in the efficient separation of divalent salt/antibiotic and monovalent salt.

Abstract:Cellulose is a renewable, biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable material. A bamboo cellulose-based nanofiltration membrane (LBL-NF-CS/BCM) was prepared with a combination of layer-by-layer assembly and spraying methods. The chemical structure, morphology, and surface charge of the resultant LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes were characterized based on Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Scanning (XPS). The nanofiltration performance of the LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes was evaluated using 500 ppm NaCl solutions under 0.3 MPa pressure. It was found that the LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes had a rejection rate of about 36.11 % against a 500 ppm NaCl solution under the conditions tested, and membrane flux of about 12.08 L/(m2 h) was reached. The combined layer-by-layer assembly and spraying provides a scalable and convenient process concept for nanofiltration membrane fabrication.

Abstract:It is still a task to synthesize polyamide-based membranes with selective layers down to 10-20 nm for high performance desalination. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were used as one-dimensional (1D) nanorods and graphene oxides (GO) as two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, respectively, to construct nanocomposite interlayers for synthesizing polyamide layers thinner than 15 nm. The 2D nanosheets are homogeneously mixed with the 1D nanorods and effectively reduce the surface roughness of the nanocomposite interlayers with decreasing the mass ratio of CNC/GO. Polyamide layers with a thickness of 10-15 nm have been synthesized at an ultralow monomer concentration of 0.025 wt% on these CNC/GO nanocomposite interlayers. The polyamide-based membranes exhibit extremely high water permeation (45.9 L/m(2)center dot h center dot bar) without losing their salt rejection ability. The nanofiltration performances of these polyamide-based membranes are higher than most of the reported nanofiltration membranes in recent years.
High-performance polyamide nanofiltration membrane with arch-bridge structure on a highly hydrated cellulose nanofiber support

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with outstanding performance are highly demanded for more efficient desalination and wastewater treatment. However, improving water permeance while maintaining high solute rejection by using the current membrane fabrication techniques remains a challenge. Herein, polyamide (PA) NF membrane with archbridge structure is successfully prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) on a composite support membrane of saltreinforced hydrophilic bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNs) nanofilm/polytetrafluoroethylene (BCNs/PTFE). The strong hydration of BCNs promotes Marangoni convection along water/organic solvent interface during the IP process, which creates extra area for interfacial reaction and produces a thin PA active layer with arch-bridge structures. These arch-bridge structures endow the resulting PA active layer with substantial larger active area for water permeation. Consequently, the PA NF membrane exhibits exceptional desalination performance with a permeance up to 42.5 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and a rejection of Na2SO4 as high as 99.1%, yielding an overall desalination performance better than almost all of the state of the art NF membranes reported so far in terms of perm selectivity.

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF), an exceedingly promising technology, has been extensively implemented within the domain of desalination. The pursuit of optimizing water permeance, while upholding outstanding rejection rates to ameliorate the vexing permeability-selectivity trade-off effect, has raised tremendous concerns. Herein, a novel approach has been proposed, involving the construction of a cyclodextrin-chelated Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) interlayer through vacuum-assisted filtration, aimed at orchestrating the interfacial polymerization (IP) process and sculpting the membrane morphologies of polyamide membranes. The results demonstrated that cyclodextrin-chelated MOF interlayer produced a "gutter" effect for faster water transport and enhanced the interaction of the substrate and PA layer. Simultaneously, the interlayer helped to alleviate the diffusion rate of piperazine (PIP) via the interactions ( e.g. , hydrogen bonds, electrostatic attraction and steric hindrance) between interlayer and PIP, leading to a lower cross-linking degree and a defect-free thinner active layer. Meanwhile, cyclodextrin with intrinsic nano-cavity created more free volume for water transport inside the polymer. Furthermore, the crumpled interlayer established a hydrophilic undulated interface, followed by the generation of micro-wrinkled polyamide layer with larger filtration areas. The optimal membrane exhibited a high permeability of 39.59 L/m 2 h bar, nearly 6.5 times than that of the original membrane, while maintaining a remarkable Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 95.71 %. The strategic deployment of cyclodextrin-chelated MOF interlayers in membrane modification held the potential to efficaciously mitigate the trade-off effect, thereby presenting a promising avenue for the realization of highly-efficient desalination processes.

Abstract:Thin film composite (TFC) polyamide membranes prepared by the interfacial polymerization (IP) of reactive monomers are widely utilized for desalination. However, the trade-off between the permeability and selectivity of TFC membranes limits further improvements in separation performance. In this study, the complexation of amine monomers with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and subsequent deposition on a substrate for the IP reaction was employed to modify the polymerization process and the resulting interlayered-thin film nanocomposite (iTFN) membrane structure. This method can optimize the amine loading and distribution for the IP reaction, and CNC with favorable functional groups can limit the release and diffusion behavior of the amine monomer, resulting in a crumpled membrane structure with a retained continuous polymer network. The optimized membrane had a three-fold higher water permeance than the pristine membrane without compromising salt rejection performance. This study provides a strategy for regulating the monomer distribution and reaction at the IP interface for improved performance.

A novel water-stable two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate frameworks thin-film composite membrane for enhancements in water permeability and nanofiltration performance

Abstract:Polymer membranes for water treatment are constrained by the permeability-separation trade-off. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) made of benzimidazole interconnected with Zn ions are used to create 2D Zn2(Bim)4 molecular sieve nanosheets, which is explored as an asymmetric, thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane for removing organic dyes and salts from water with a high water permeability under a low operating pressure (1 bar). The 2D Zn2(Bim)4 TFC NF membrane is synthesized via ionic bonds between polycations and the peripheral hydroxy groups of 2D Zn2(Bim)4 nanosheets, regulating the assembly of 2D Zn2(Bim)4 to create a novel crack-free functional layer on top of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane. FESEM and XPS confirmed the presence of a polycations-regulated ultrathin functional layer with a thickness of ∼37 nm on the PVDF support. Benefiting from its structural feature, our 2D Zn2(Bim)4 TFC NF membrane could achieve an ultra-high flux of ∼290 L/(m2·h·bar) (5-10-fold higher than that of graphene-based membranes), good anti-fouling properties and high rejection rates (above 98%) for organic dyes. Moreover, the desalinization rate is 50-75%. That is, our membrane is endowed with NF capability, and its intrinsic ultrafiltration features (high water permeance, ultrafast, and energy-saving) are also well maintained.
Surface-crumpled thin-film nanocomposite membranes with elevated nanofiltration performance enabled by facilely synthesized covalent organic frameworks

Abstract:Hydrophilic and porous nanofillers have shown great benefits in the attainment of high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, a novel nanoporous covalent organic framework (NCOF) was facilely synthesized under mild conditions and deposited onto a polyethersulfone substrate to induce formations of crumpled polyamide layers via interfacial polymerization. With the incorporation of NCOFs, the surface of the COF-based thin-film nanocomposite (CTN) membranes gradually transformed from tent-like to mesh morphology, which significantly enhanced the water permeance owing to the increased effective membrane filtration area and additional water transport channels provided by NCOFs. Besides, the favorable compatibility between NCOFs and the polyamide layer endowed the CTN membranes with high rejection capacities to a variety of solutes. The optimal membrane with the NCOF deposition density of 19.27 μg cm−2, CTN9 membrane, showed nearly twice higher water permeance of 15.52 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 while maintaining high rejections of Na2SO4 and MgCl2 (98.91% and 94.20%, respectively). In addition, the CTN membranes exhibited a satisfying stability during the long-term filtration of saline solutions as well as an improved antifouling ability to the model foulants of bovine serum albumin. The superior NF performance rendered the NCOF functionalized membranes highly promising for water treatment.

Abstract:Due to water shortages, people have to use wastewater, seawater and brackish groundwater. People prefer to use membrane-based technologies to produce high-quality water, because they are environmentally friendly and have higher energy efficiencies than traditional thermal methods. The desalination nanofiltration (NF) membranes developed demonstrate a trade-off between water permeabilities and selectivities. Researchers are devoted to develop desalination NF membranes with both high water permeabilities and high selectivities. Using novel strategies, we successfully constructed double-high-performance NF membranes with a polyamidepolyester composite layer and a surface layer via a facile additional two-step approach. We used both triethanolamine (TEOA) and piperazine (PIP) to react with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to form a composite active layer and coated the self-assembled polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of the composite active layer. To our knowledge, their performances are among the topmost of developed NF membranes for desalination and dye pollutant removal. We used scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and water contact angle gauge (WCA) to investigate the membrane surface characteristics. The membrane obtained via the two-step approach has a water permeability of up to 21.3 LMH/bar, while that of the control polyamide NF membrane is as low as 8.2 LMH/bar. The developed membrane owes apparently improved water permeability in addition to maintaining high selectivities. Furthermore, the coating of the self-assembled PDA can alleviate membrane fouling. We also performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study why the use of TEOA in addition to PIP to react with TMC improves membrane performances and give guidances and inspirations to future researches.
The Performance of Cellulose Composite Membranes and Their Application in Drinking Water Treatment

Abstract:Water scarcity and water pollution have become increasingly severe, and therefore, the purification of water resources has recently garnered increasing attention. Given its position as a major water resource, the efficient purification of drinking water is of crucial importance. In this study, we adopted a phase transition method to prepare ZrO2/BCM (bamboo cellulose membranes), after which we developed IP-ZrO2/BC-NFM (bamboo cellulose nanofiltration membranes) through interfacial polymerization using piperazine (PIP) and tricarbonyl chloride (TMC). Subsequently, we integrated these two membranes to create a combined "ultrafiltration + nanofiltration" membrane process for the treatment of drinking water. The membrane combination process was conducted at 25 °C, with ultrafiltration at 0.1 MPa and nanofiltration at 0.5 MPa. This membrane combination, featuring "ultrafiltration + nanofiltration," had a significant impact on reducing turbidity, consistently maintaining the post-filtration turbidity of drinking water at or below 0.1 NTU. Furthermore, the removal rates for CODMN and ammonia nitrogen reached 75% and 88.6%, respectively, aligning with the standards for high-quality drinking water. In a continuous 3 h experiment, the nanofiltration unit exhibited consistent retention rates for Na2SO4 and bovine serum protein (BSA), with variations of less than 5%, indicating exceptional separation performance. After 9 h of operation, the water flux of the nanofiltration unit began to stabilize, with a decrease rate of approximately 25%, demonstrating that the "ultrafiltration + nanofiltration" membrane combination can maintain consistent performance during extended use. In conclusion, the "ultrafiltration + nanofiltration" membrane combination exhibited remarkable performance in the treatment of drinking water, offering a viable solution to address issues related to water scarcity and water pollution.

Abstract:The cross-linking coating modification strategy was adopted to construct an environmentally sustainable bamboo cellulose-based composite nanofiltration membrane (CL-NF-BCM), with bamboo cellulose providing as the support material. Solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR) results show that alginate (ALG) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were successfully cross-linked onto the cellulose membrane. Furthermore, the transfer of chemical elements was confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The microscopic morphology illustrates that after cross-linking coating modification, the surface of the bamboo cellulose membrane turns from a uniform porous structure to a polymerized layer with interwoven network structure. In addition, the result of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) shows that the average pore size of the as-prepared CL-NF-BCM of about 1.1 nm. The performance testing results show that the CL-NF-BCM cellulose membrane had a rejection of 48% against 500 ppm NaCl solution and membrane flux of 17 L·m−2·h−1 under a nanofiltration condition of 0.5 MPa operating pressure. This work enriches a high value-added application of bamboo products, as well as provides a novel perspective for membrane surface modification.
