Abstract:In Sichuan province, of China, when some acoustical enclosure workshops were built to cover on large gas compressor to reduce the noise impact on neighbour residents, vibrations were found in dwelling houses 400 meters away. In this paper, noise measurements proved that the vibrations were caused by airborne sound with an infrasonic low frequency below 20Hz. To solve these problems, several 1:20 scale models of the workshops were made, and the simulated room resonance tests were carried out. The scale-model measure result showed that the violent infrasonic sound in the village's house was caused by the main frequency of the reciprocating compressor was accidental coincidence with the room resonance frequency which was determined by the enclosure's shape. Subsequently, we redesigned the shape of workshop to change its resonance frequency and then measured the sound outside of the workshop. And the measure result showed that the infrasonic noise outside of the workshop was reduced. As a conclusion, the paper presents a calculation method to avoid the resonance effect at low frequency which was approved by the scale model test and real projects as well.
