Abstract:Detailed NMR investigations on fresh and coked Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts for methane dehydro-aromatization were presented. Al-27 MAS and Si-29 MAS as well as corresponding CP/MAS NMR experiments have proved that an interaction between molybdenum and the zeolite lattice occurs during the impregnation and calcination processes of the catalysts. With Bronsted acid sites serving as a powerful trap, molybdenum migrates into the internal channels of the zeolite and reacts preferentially with bridging hydroxyls groups. Thus, molybdenum is anchored to the framework aluminum through an oxygen bridge, which, in turn, modifies the acidic properties of the HMCM-22 and leads to a high dispersion of the molybdenum. If this kind of interaction becomes stronger, expelling of aluminum from the zeolite lattice would occur, with the forming of both octahedral nonframework aluminum and Al-2(MoO4)(3) crystallites, The latter can be hydrated to [Al(OH)(n)(H2O)(6-n)](n)(MoO4) (n = 1 or 2) in a water-saturated desiccator and can give a line at ca. 14 ppm in the Al-27 MAS NMR spectrum. UV-Raman results suggest that the carbonaceous deposits on the catalysts are mainly hydrogen-deficient aromatic type, which are also verified by H-1 --> Si-29 CP/MAS and H-1 --> Al-27 CP/MAS NMR, as well as the failure for conducting the C-13 CP/MAS NMR experiment. H-1 --> Al-27 CP/MAS NMR experiments indicate that most of the coke is deposited on framework aluminum (Bronsted site). Regeneration in an oxygen atmosphere leads to the formation of a considerable amount of Al-2(MoO4)(3) crystallites. However, the catalytic activity can be properly restored after the regeneration; thus, the idea of taking this species as the detrimental factor for this reaction can be ruled out. On the other hand, lattice destruction of the zeolite is suggested to be responsible for the poor performance exhibited by the 10Mo/HMCM-22 catalyst. The synergic effect between molybdenum and Bronsted acid sites is considered to be the main reason for the outstanding catalytic performance of the 6Mo/HMCM-22 catalyst.
The Chemical Nature of Carbonaceous Deposits and Their Role in Methane Dehydro-Aromatization on Mo/MCM-22 Catalysts

Abstract:Various carbonaceous deposits are formed during the course of methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions on Mo/MCM-22 catalysts. These carbon species were investigated by various temperature-programmed techniques such as TPH and TPCO2, combining with TPO and TGA results in order to reveal their chemical nature and determine their amounts. The TPO profiles recorded from coked Mo/MCM-22 catalysts show two temperature peaks: one at about 756 K and the other at about 876 K. The coke amounts related to these two peaks were determined on the basis of the corresponding corrected and deconvoluted TPO profiles, combining with the TGA profiles concerned.The results of TPH and TPCO2 suggested that both H-2 and CO2 have the ability to eliminate the carbon species corresponding to both the high and low temperature peaks. The TGA results of the Mo/MCM-22 catalysts with different Mo loading revealed that the total amount of coke formed was the largest on a 6Mo/MCM-22 during TPSR with CH4 for 3 h. Meanwhile, a kinetic analysis of the coke buming-off process revealed that there are two kinds of carbonaceous deposits: one is mainly located on the Bronsted acid sites and the other on the Mo species. The former is inert and causes deactivation of the catalyst for MDA, while the latter may be active and can be hydrogenated with H-2 to form ethylene and benzene. Abstract:UV Raman, TG-MS (TPO) and nitrogen physisorption characterization were used to characterize deactivated Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts from coupling reaction of methane CO2 autothermal reforming (MCAR) and methane dehydroaromatization (MDA). The results show that MCAR/MDA maintains the Mo-oxo species throughout the process, reducing the maximum C6H6 yield, but extending the reaction life by at least 4 time. As O/CH4 increases, MCAR/MDA changes from oxygen-deficient to oxygen-rich state. For MCAR/MDA under oxygen-deficient condition, O2 can only delay the accumulation of aromatics. Grown of coke on Brӧnsted acid eventually leads to complete blockage of the micropores of the catalyst. Slowly deposited graphite coke in MCAR/MDA extended the critical time by nearly 4 times. For MCAR/MDA under oxygen-rich condition, a 70% C6H6 selectivity was maintained throughout the process. After 3700 min of operation, the remaining micropore volume and micropore surface of the deactivated catalyst remained above 1/3. The timely removal of graphite coke at the pore mouth by the MCAR/MDA reaction under oxygen-rich conditions can eliminate the limitation of C6H6 diffusion, thereby effectively preventing the acceleration of the coke deposit micropores which cause the MDA reaction to be rapidly deactivated.Graphic Abstract

Different carbonaceous species and their amounts are distinguished. There are at least three kinds of cokes: carbidic carbon in molybdenum carbide, molybdenum-associated coke, and aromatic-type cokes on acid sites. It is suggested that the aromatic-type cokes on Brønsted acid sites are responsible for catalyst deactivation. Catalytic activity can be restored after temperature-programmed hydrogenation.

Abstract:On-stream deactivation during metathesis reaction of ethene and butene-2 to propene over Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts was examined. TG, TPO, solid-state NMR, UV-vis, EPR, and XPS techniques were used to characterize the nature and location of carbonaceous deposits as well as the oxidation state of Mo species on the fresh, used, and regenerated catalysts. It is found that side reaction of olefin oligomerization takes place simultaneously with the metathesis reaction even at low temperature. Most of the carbonaceous species are formed at the beginning of the reaction, and long-chain alkanes are the predominant coke species. There are three types of carbonaceous deposits located at different positions within the Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts. Most of the aliphatic hydrocarbons formed with time on stream are associated with molybdenum species of the catalyst. Active sites poisoned by coke and deep reduction of Mo species may be responsible for catalyst deactivation. The recovery of the activity of regenerated catalyst further proves our proposed deactivation mechanism.

Abstract:Multinuclear solid-state 13C, 27Al, and 29Si MAS NMR and 129Xe NMR were used to study the carbon deposition on the 6%Mo/Hβ-Al2O3 catalyst in metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene. The results showed that the coke composition was aliphatic hydrocarbons, and the most of them was present in Hβ zeolite instead of in Al2O3. The 129Xe NMR experiments clearly revealed that the deposited carbon was located at the positions of channel intersections in Hβ zeolite, which caused the deactivation of the catalyst.

Abstract:The interaction between Mo species and a conventionally microsized and particularly nanosized HZSM-5 support was studied by high-resolution multinuclear solid-state NMR techniques. As proved by 27Al and 29Si MAS as well as CP/MAS NMR investigations, this interaction was so strong that the framework aluminum of both microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites could be extracted. With increasing Mo loading, more nonframework aluminum, resonanced at ca. 30 ppm, appeared in the 27Al MAS NMR spectrum of the Mo-loaded nanosized HZSM-5 catalyst. Meanwhile, this strong interaction led to the formation of more new Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines on the nanosized HZSM-5 support than on the microsized HZSM-5 support. The appearance of Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines resulted in fewer active catalysts for the methane dehyro-aromatization. The results of 1H MAS NMR using perfluorotributyl amine as a probe molecule demonstrated that Mo species preferentially reacted with the silanols and nonframework AlOH on the external surface of microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites. In addition, impregnated Mo species remained predominantly on the external surface of the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite, although there was a possibility that they might migrate into the lattice channels of the microsized HZSM-5 zeolite. The migration of some Mo species into the zeolite channels might be beneficial for the conversion of methane to aromatics in the absence of oxygen.

Abstract:The catalytic performances of methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions over 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts calcined for different durations of time at 773K have been investigated in combination with ex situ 1H MAS NMR characterization. Prolongation of the calcination time at 773K is in favor of the diffusion of the Mo species on the external surface and the migration of Mo species into the channels, resulting in a further decrease in the number of Brönsted acid sites, while causing only a slight change in the Mo contents of the bulk and in the framework structure of the HZSM-5 zeolite. The MoOx species associated and non-associated with the Brönsted acid sites can be estimated quantitatively based on the 1H MAS NMR measurements as well as on the assumption of a stoichiometry ratio of 1:1 between the Mo species and the Brönsted acid sites. Calcining the 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst at 773K for 18h can cause the MoOx species to associate with the Brönsted acid sites, while a 6wt.% Mo/SiO2 sample can be taken as a catalyst in which all MoOx species are non-associated with the Brönsted acid sites. The TOF data at different times on stream on the 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst calcined at 773K for 18h and on the 6wt.% Mo/SiO2 catalyst reveal that the MoCx species formed from MoOx associated with the Brönsted acid sites are more active and stable than those formed from MoOx non-associated with the Brönsted acid sites. An analysis of the TPO profiles recorded on the used 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts calcined for different durations of time combined with the TGA measurements also reveals that the more of the MoCx species formed from MoOx species associated with the Brönsted acid sites, the lower the amount of coke that will be deposited on it. The decrease of the coke amount is mainly due to a decrease in the coke burnt-off at high temperature.

Investigation on the Performance of Supported Molybdenum Carbide for the Partial Oxidation of Methane

Abstract:The performance of supported and unsupported molybdenum carbide for the partial oxida-tion of methane (POM) to syngas was investigated. An evaluation of the catalysts indicates that bulkmolybdenum carbide has a higher methane conversion during the initial stage but a lower selectivity toCO and H2/CO ratio in the products. The rapid deactivation of the catalyst is also a significant problem.However, the supported molybdenum carbide catalyst shows a much higher methane conversion, increasedselectivity and significantly improved catalytic stability. The characterization by XRD and BET specificarea measurements depict an improved dispersion of molybdenum carbide when using alumina as a carrier.The bulk or the supported molybdenum carbide exists in the β-Mo2C phase, while it is transformed intomolybdenum dioxide postcatalysis which is an important cause of molybdenum carbide deactivation.

Abstract:Complete reduction of Mo species interacting strongly with a HZSM-5 zeolite support in methane is difficult, and the reduction product, MoCxOy, is a key active species in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) under nonoxidative conditions. Pretreatment in H2 at 623 K could lead to topotactic transformation of the Mo species from hexagonally close packing (hcp) to face-centered cubic (fcc) structures; the fcc MoCxOy species are more active and more stable than the hcp MoCxOy in MDA. After initial H2 pretreatment at 623 K, followed by a CH4-treatment, the Mo species on a MoO3/HZSM-5 catalyst prepared by mechanical mixing was reduced and carburized to form fcc α-MoC1−x species on the extra surface of the zeolite. Methane molecules activated by the α-MoC1−x were converted mainly into carbon deposits instead of benzene. Both the most active Mo species and the neighboring Brönsted acid sites are essential in obtaining a perfect catalyst in the reaction of MDA.

Abstract:Here we reported the effect of the Cu-Mn-Ce-SiO2 (CMC-SiO2) interaction on the physical and chemical aspects of the catalytic combustion of toluene by adjusting the loading amount of the CMC mixed oxide on SiO2.Notably,the CMC/KIT-6 catalyst with low CMC loading performed poorly with an obvious deactivation,owing to the inhibition of the metal oxides active sites,while the activity recovered after washing away some SiO2.The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR),N2 adsorption,and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).Although there is no change in crystal structure after loading on SiO2,active oxygen species immigrate from lattice to surface for SiO2 surface rich in hydroxyl groups and having high dispersion of CMC,leading to deactivation of the CMC catalyst.However,it is worth mentioning that the lattice oxygen played a key role in catalytic combustion.The activity of the CMC catalyst recovered when the quantity of lattice oxygen increased upon removing surface-OH groups by calcination or removing some SiO2 by alkali washing.

Abstract:Methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) was carried out on 6Mo/MCM-22 and 6Mo/alkali-treated MCM-22 catalysts. The results of catalytic evaluation, MAS NMR and pore distribution experiments demonstrated that the alkali treatment of MCM-22 could create some mesopores on the parent MCM-22 zeolite. Appropriate amount of mesopores coexisted with its inherent micropores would benefit the diffusion of the reactants and products, thus increase the stability of the MDA reaction on the 6Mo/alkaii-treated MCM-22catalyst.

Effect of Co Additive on the Formation of Carbon Deposit on Mo/Mcm-22 Catalyst for Methane Dehydro-Aromatization

Abstract:Methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions was carried out over the Mo/ MCM-22 catalyst modified by Co additive, and the results suggested that the addition of Co dramatically improved the activity and stability of Mo/MCM-22. Moreover, the chemical nature and physical properties of the carbon deposit formed on Mo/MCM-22 and Co-Mo/MCM-22 catalysts were studied by temperature-programmed reaction with hydrogen (TPH) and temperature-programmed reaction with CO2 (TPCO2) combining with thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that there were two kinds of carbon deposit formed on the surface of the catalysts during MDA. TPH experiment only had effect on the carbon deposit burnt-off at high temperature. However, TPCO2 experiment could result in diminishing of the carbon deposit burnt-off at both low temperature and high temperature. The formation of the two kinds of carbon deposit was distinctly suppressed on the Co-modified Mo/MCM-22 catalyst, which directly led to the obvious increase of the stability of the Mo/MCM-22 catalyst in MDA.

Abstract:HMCM-22 zeolite with variable SiO2/Al2O3 ratios has been successfully synthesized and used as support of molybdenum based catalyst in methane dehydroaromatization. Effect of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on the catalytic performance of Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts was studied, and results show that methane conversion and benzene selectivity increase with the decrease of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, and reach maximum on Mo/HMCM-22 catalyst with SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 25. Further increasing SiO2/Al2O3 ratio results a decrease of activity and benzene selectivity. Al-27 MAS NMR spectroscopy and NH3-TPD techniques were applied to characterize the structure-property relationship of the catalyst. The catalytic performance of Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts in methane dehydroaromatization has been correlated with the Bronsted acidity of HMCM-22 zeolite supports, which may promote not only the methane activation on the Mo carbide sites of Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts, but also further oligomerization of the CHx surface species towards aromatics products in the reaction.
Studies of the Active Sites for Methane Dehydroaromatization Using Ultrahigh-Field Solid-State 95Mo NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract:Abstract It is found that the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, corresponding to the surface exchanged molybdenum species in Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts is short, i.e., less than about 100ms at 21.1 T while the value of T1 for the crystallite MoO3 molecules is longer, i.e., about 30 s. Such a difference, more than two orders in magnitude, is utilized to differentiate the exchanged Mo species from the agglomerate MoO3 in Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. An approximately linear correlation between the amount of exchanged species and the aromatics formation rate is obtained. This result significantly strengthens our prior conclusion that the exchanged Mo species are the active centers for the methane dehydroaromatization reaction on Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 3722-3723). Our results also suggest that one exchanged Mo atom anchors on two ion exchange sites and the exchanged Mo species on catalysts are possibly monomeric. Analyzing the linshapes obtained from both the 95Mo MAS and the static spectra indicates that the exchanged sites are heterogeneous, resulting in a significantly broadened MAS spectrum and essentially a featureless but nearly symmetric static lineshape for the exchanged Mo species. Furthermore, for crystallite MoO3 powder sample, the parameters related to the electric-field-gradient (EFG) tensor, the chemicalmore » shift anisotropy (CSA) and the three Euler angles required to align the CSA principal axis system with the quadrupolar principal axis system are determined by analyzing both the 95Mo MAS and the static spectra obtained at ultra-high field of 21.1 T. The new results obtained from this study on crystallite MoO3 powders should help to clarify some of the contradictions in prior literature reports from other groups. Abstract:The Mo oxide species associated with the Brönsted acid sites of HZSM-5 zeolite can be partially reduced to the MoOxCy species during the induction period, which play a crucial role in methane dehydro-aromatization. Pre-reduction with H2 at 623K can enhance the topotactic transformation of the Mo specie from hexagonally close packed (hcp) structure into face centered cubic (fcc) structure, thus can improve greatly the catalytic activity and stability of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst.
