Abstract:Complete reduction of Mo species interacting strongly with a HZSM-5 zeolite support in methane is difficult, and the reduction product, MoCxOy, is a key active species in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) under nonoxidative conditions. Pretreatment in H2 at 623 K could lead to topotactic transformation of the Mo species from hexagonally close packing (hcp) to face-centered cubic (fcc) structures; the fcc MoCxOy species are more active and more stable than the hcp MoCxOy in MDA. After initial H2 pretreatment at 623 K, followed by a CH4-treatment, the Mo species on a MoO3/HZSM-5 catalyst prepared by mechanical mixing was reduced and carburized to form fcc α-MoC1−x species on the extra surface of the zeolite. Methane molecules activated by the α-MoC1−x were converted mainly into carbon deposits instead of benzene. Both the most active Mo species and the neighboring Brönsted acid sites are essential in obtaining a perfect catalyst in the reaction of MDA.
Methane Dehydro-aromatization over Mo/HZSM-5 in the Absence of Oxygen: A Multinuclear Solid-State NMR Study of the Interaction between Supported Mo Species and HZSM-5 Zeolite with Different Crystal Sizes

Abstract:The interaction between Mo species and a conventionally microsized and particularly nanosized HZSM-5 support was studied by high-resolution multinuclear solid-state NMR techniques. As proved by 27Al and 29Si MAS as well as CP/MAS NMR investigations, this interaction was so strong that the framework aluminum of both microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites could be extracted. With increasing Mo loading, more nonframework aluminum, resonanced at ca. 30 ppm, appeared in the 27Al MAS NMR spectrum of the Mo-loaded nanosized HZSM-5 catalyst. Meanwhile, this strong interaction led to the formation of more new Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines on the nanosized HZSM-5 support than on the microsized HZSM-5 support. The appearance of Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines resulted in fewer active catalysts for the methane dehyro-aromatization. The results of 1H MAS NMR using perfluorotributyl amine as a probe molecule demonstrated that Mo species preferentially reacted with the silanols and nonframework AlOH on the external surface of microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites. In addition, impregnated Mo species remained predominantly on the external surface of the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite, although there was a possibility that they might migrate into the lattice channels of the microsized HZSM-5 zeolite. The migration of some Mo species into the zeolite channels might be beneficial for the conversion of methane to aromatics in the absence of oxygen.

Abstract:Mo/HZSM-5 is a typical catalyst for methane dehydro-aromatization in the absence of oxygen. The catalyst was prepared with impregnation method in previous studies. In this paper, mechanical mixing, solid reaction and microwave methods were used for Mo/HZSM-5 preparation. In addition, the catalytic performance of the catalyst for methane dehydro-aromatization was investigated. Compared with impregnated Mo/HZSM-5 sample, the catalyst samples prepared with mechanical mixing, solid reaction and microwave methods show higher selectivity for aromatics and lower selectivity for coke. BET, XRD and NH3TPD experimental results exhibited that the location of Mo species is heavily dependent on the preparation method. It is suggested that the Mo species located on the external surface of the zeolite is more efficient for methane dehydro-aromatization, and at the same time suppresses the coke formation.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to benzene or other valuable chemicals is a very promising process for the efficient application of natural gas. Compared with conversion processes that require oxidants, non-oxidative direct conversion is more attractive due to high selectivity to the target product. In this paper, an alternative route for methane dehydrogenation and selective conversion to benzene and hydrogen without the participation of oxygen is discussed. A brief review of the catalysts used in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) is first given, followed by our current understanding of the location and the active phase of Mo species, the reaction mechanism, the mechanism of carbonaceous deposit and the deactivation of Mo/zeolite catalysts are systematically discussed. Ways to improve the catalytic activity and stability are described in detail based on catalyst and reaction as well as reactor design. Future prospects for methane dehydroaromatization process are also presented.

Abstract:In this study, the methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) on vanadium oxide (VO x )-based catalysts was investigated. Using various catalyst supports, VO x /HZSM-5 exhibited the highest MDA activity. In MDA using VO x /HZSM-5, an induction period was observed. Raman spectroscopy and XPS analysis indicated that V2O5 species result in the highly dispersed state by the contact with CH4. X-ray absorption fine structure analysis suggested the formation of VC species. Such structural changes lead to the induction period for the MDA reaction. Based on the effect of the catalyst support and the aromatization reaction of ethylene, we propose a mechanism in which methane forms ethylene on the vanadium catalyst, and ethylene is then aromatized with the aid of the acid sites and micropore structure of HZSM-5. Additionally, the effect of hydrogen co-feeding on the MDA reaction was investigated, which revealed that catalyst deactivation due to coke formation was suppressed in the presence of hydrogen.

Abstract:TEOS as the exotic silicon source was used to modify HZSM-5 zeolite by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a vapor phase flow system. Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts prepared by using silicon-modified zeolite showed higher activity and stability than those prepared by using non-modified HZSM-5 zeolite in methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions. The effect of silanation on the acid sites and the interaction between the Mo species and the acid sites have been studied by using FT-IR, NH3-TPD and 1H MAS NMR. The exotic silicon species not only selectively covered and eliminated almost all of the Brönsted acid sites on the external surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, but also affected the internal Brönsted acid sites, which are close to the channel openings. This results in an obvious decrease in the number of Brönsted acid sites per unit cell. In the MDA reaction, the Brönsted acid sites provided active sites not only for the polymerization and aromatization of the active intermedia, but also for the formation of carbonaceous deposits, which is a crucial factor leading to the deactivation of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. Only a small fraction of Brönsted acid sites, ca. 0.6 per unit cell, was required to accomplish the aromatization, and the superfluous free Brönsted acid sites would cause severe carbonaceous deposits under non-oxidative condition at a temperature as high as 973K.
Enhanced catalytic performance of the hollow Mo/HZSM-5 nanocrystal for methane dehydroaromatization

Abstract:Although Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst is widely used in the methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction, the conventional microporous HZSM-5 with long diffusion path often causes the blockage of channels and pores by coke. In this work, a series of hollow HZSM-5 zeolites with different cavity sizes and tunable shell thickness were prepared by varying the alkali treatment time. After being loaded with Mo, the catalytic performances of the hollow catalysts were investigated in MDA reaction. Compared with conventional solid Mo/Z5 catalyst, the hollow Mo/Z5( x ) catalysts exhibit higher CH 4 conversion and C 6 H 6 selectivity, which show an increasing trend with the increase of inner cavity size and decrease of zeolite shell thickness. Specifically, the hollow Mo/Z5(24) catalyst achieves the maximum CH 4 conversion of 13.8% and C 6 H 6 selectivity of 72%. It suggests that the hollow structure is conducive to enhance the accessibility of feed or intermediates to the Brønsted acid sites within zeolites and facilitates the rapid diffusion of the C 6 H 6 from the intraframework channels rather than further polymerization to the coke. Furthermore, this novel structure endows stronger interaction between the Mo species and the acid sites, resisting agglomeration of Mo-species on external zeolite surface at high temperature. This research provides a new insight into exploiting a candidate catalyst for the MDA reaction.

Abstract:The catalytic performances of methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions over 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts calcined for different durations of time at 773K have been investigated in combination with ex situ 1H MAS NMR characterization. Prolongation of the calcination time at 773K is in favor of the diffusion of the Mo species on the external surface and the migration of Mo species into the channels, resulting in a further decrease in the number of Brönsted acid sites, while causing only a slight change in the Mo contents of the bulk and in the framework structure of the HZSM-5 zeolite. The MoOx species associated and non-associated with the Brönsted acid sites can be estimated quantitatively based on the 1H MAS NMR measurements as well as on the assumption of a stoichiometry ratio of 1:1 between the Mo species and the Brönsted acid sites. Calcining the 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst at 773K for 18h can cause the MoOx species to associate with the Brönsted acid sites, while a 6wt.% Mo/SiO2 sample can be taken as a catalyst in which all MoOx species are non-associated with the Brönsted acid sites. The TOF data at different times on stream on the 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst calcined at 773K for 18h and on the 6wt.% Mo/SiO2 catalyst reveal that the MoCx species formed from MoOx associated with the Brönsted acid sites are more active and stable than those formed from MoOx non-associated with the Brönsted acid sites. An analysis of the TPO profiles recorded on the used 6wt.% Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts calcined for different durations of time combined with the TGA measurements also reveals that the more of the MoCx species formed from MoOx species associated with the Brönsted acid sites, the lower the amount of coke that will be deposited on it. The decrease of the coke amount is mainly due to a decrease in the coke burnt-off at high temperature.

Abstract:HMCM-22 zeolite with variable SiO2/Al2O3 ratios has been successfully synthesized and used as support of molybdenum based catalyst in methane dehydroaromatization. Effect of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on the catalytic performance of Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts was studied, and results show that methane conversion and benzene selectivity increase with the decrease of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, and reach maximum on Mo/HMCM-22 catalyst with SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 25. Further increasing SiO2/Al2O3 ratio results a decrease of activity and benzene selectivity. Al-27 MAS NMR spectroscopy and NH3-TPD techniques were applied to characterize the structure-property relationship of the catalyst. The catalytic performance of Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts in methane dehydroaromatization has been correlated with the Bronsted acidity of HMCM-22 zeolite supports, which may promote not only the methane activation on the Mo carbide sites of Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts, but also further oligomerization of the CHx surface species towards aromatics products in the reaction.

Abstract:Methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) was carried out on 6Mo/MCM-22 and 6Mo/alkali-treated MCM-22 catalysts. The results of catalytic evaluation, MAS NMR and pore distribution experiments demonstrated that the alkali treatment of MCM-22 could create some mesopores on the parent MCM-22 zeolite. Appropriate amount of mesopores coexisted with its inherent micropores would benefit the diffusion of the reactants and products, thus increase the stability of the MDA reaction on the 6Mo/alkaii-treated MCM-22catalyst.

Abstract:The effect of preparation method. Mo content, pretreatment conditions, space velocity, reaction temperature on the preformance of methane aromatization under oxygen-free conditions over HZSM-5 supported Mo catalyst has been studied, the effect of carbon deposition on catalyst after reaction and regeneration by carbon burning with O2 was investigated. It was found that the initial activity of catalysts prepared by grinding technique was higher than that of catalysts prepared by impregnating technique, but the activity of the former decreased quickly with reaction time increased, and decreased obviously after regeneration, while the activity of the latter was similar to that of fresh catalysts. The catalyst with Mo content of 3. 5%��4. 0% showed the best aromatization activity. Decreasing space velocity and increasing reaction temperature improved the aromatization activity. With reaction time increased, the selectivity for ethylene enhanced while selectivity for benzene decreased. Furthermore, XPS results suggested that the most of Mo6+ in the catalysts prepared by impregnating method dispersed in the framework of HZSM-5 zeolite and those of grinding method dispersed on the surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, the carbon content on the catalyst surface increased rapidly, and Mo6+ in the ground catalysts was reduced to Mo0 after reaction for 4 h. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that molybdena carbene with configuration of MoO3 = CH2 is an initial product of methane aromatization reaction.

Abstract:EPR characterization of the Mo species on/in the HZSM-5 zeolite is described. Four different EPR signals, denoted as signals A, B, D, and E, respectively, have been recorded on the Mo/HZSM-5 sample during its stepwise reduction by methane. Different Mo species were identified on the basis of their reducibility and the nature of the signal concerned. There are two kinds of Mo species on the Mo/HZSM-5 sample, which are located at different positions on/in the HZSM-5 zeolite. The first kind of the Mo species is polynuclear and located on the external surface. They are either in the octahedral-coordinated MoO3 crystallite form (denoted as MoO3oct) or in the MoOx form with asquare-pyramidal coordination (denoted as MoOxsqu). The second kind of the Mo species is associated with the Al atom in the lattice channels of the zeolite. The Mo species associated with Al are mononuclear species, which migrate or diffuse into the channels of the HZSM-5 during calcination. The EPR signals of migrating Mo ion (signals D and E) have hyperfine structures which are caused by the interaction between the Mo species and the lattice Al atom. And the corresponding Mo species are located at two different positions close to the Bronsted Al atoms: Al(I)…MoOx and Al(II)…MoOx. The order of reducibility of these four kinds of species is as follows: MoO3oct≈MoOxsqu>Al(I)…MoOx>Al(II)…MoOx. It was found that the O2− species might exist on the surface of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst during the induction period of the reaction. The variation of the different Mo species in a 6%Mo/HZSM-5 sample during the reaction course is illustrated, and the relationship between the catalytic performance and the intensity of the ESR spectra is discussed. It is proposed that Mo2C is located at the external surface, while partial reduced Mo species associated with the Al atom is inside the channel during the reaction. Both of these Mo species play a key role in methane dehydro-aromatization.
Effect of Dimethyl Ether Co-feed on Catalytic Performance of Methane Dehydroaromatization over Mo/HZSM-5 Catalyst

Abstract:The effect of dimethyl ether (DME) co-feed on the catalytic performance of methane dehy- droaromatization (MDA) over 6Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst was investigated as a function of DME concentration under reaction conditions of T =1023 K, p=101 kPa and SV=1500 ml/(g h). A high benzene yield was obtained and the stability of the catalyst was improved by adding 1.5%DME to the CH4 feed. The C6H6 yield was as high as ca. 10% even after reaction for 6 h. The stability of the catalyst was further improved when DME concentration in the co-feed gas was increased to an appropriate value. TGA and TPO results of the used 6Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst showed that the amount of coke on the used catalyst was reduced and the chemical nature of the coke was changed. When 1.5%DME was added to the CH4 feed, the coke formed on the catalyst could be burned off more easily than that when only CH4 was used as reactant. It is supposed that the oxygen in DME may play a role in preventing the coke burnt off at lower temperature from transforming into the coke burnt off at higher temperature, which results in the improvement of the stability of the catalyst.

Abstract:In a recent Angewandte Chemie paper, Deng and co-workers used solid-state NMR spectroscopy to identify the active sites and reaction intermediates for Mo/ZSM-5 catalyzed methane dehydroaromatization reaction. The spatially proximate acidic proton-Mo sites were directly correlated with the reaction activity, and the authors concluded that olefines served as the reaction intermediates.

Abstract:A molybdenum‐modified MCM‐22 catalyst has been used for methane dehydro‐aromatization. The catalytic performance on this Mo/MCM‐22 catalyst is featured by a higher yield of benzene and a lesser yield of naphthalene in comparison with that on a Mo/HZSM‐5 catalyst under the same experimental conditions. Methane conversion of 10.0% and benzene selectivity of 80% over a 6Mo/MCM‐22 catalyst at 973 K was obtained. Based on the effect of contact time, it is suggested that the reaction is severely inhibited by the products, probably due to their strong adsorption and slow desorption. The Mo/MCM‐22 catalysts were characterized by XRD, NH3‐TPD and TPSR techniques. XRD patterns of the Mo/MCM‐22 catalysts confirmed that Mo species are highly dispersed on/in the MCM‐22 zeolite if the Mo loading is less than 10%. NH3‐TPD experiment shows that the MCM‐22 zeolite contains strong and exchangeable Brønsted acid sites. TPSR of methane revealed that there is an induction period during which the Mo species are reduced by methane and transformed probably into Mo2C or Mo2OxCy. It is concluded that the nature of the methane dehydro‐aromatization reaction over the Mo/MCM‐22 catalysts is similar to that on the Mo/HZSM‐5 catalysts. The unique pore systems, the proper acid strength of the MCM‐22 zeolite and the Mo species are factors important for methane dehydro‐aromatization over Mo/MCM‐22 catalysts.
Study on Bifunctionality of Mo/HZSM-5 Catalysts for Methane Dehydro-Aromatization under Non-oxidative Condition

Abstract:The optimum Mo/(H + ) ratio per unit cell of the active precursors in Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts for methane dehydro-aromatization, measured by 1 H MAS NMR, was found to be about 1 when adjusting the acid sites by altering either the SiO2/Al2O3 ratios or the Mo loading. This implies that a concerted interaction between the Mo species and the Bronsted acid sites probably features the bifunctionality of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. On the other hand, it was found that the driving force for Mo species to move into the HSZM-5 zeolite channels and the interaction between the Mo species and the Bronsted acid sites are closely and proportionably related with the amount of Bronsted acid sites per unit cell.

Abstract:Combining the H-1 MAS NMR, XPS, XRF and TG measurements with the catalyst evaluation, the effect of silanation of HZSM-5 zeolite on the catalytic performance of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in methane dehydro-aromatization was investigated. The results showed that the silanation of HZSM-5 zeolite resulted in not only the removal of the external acid sites but also the dealumiantion of HZSM-5 zeolite, which led to an improvement in the catalytic performance of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in the methane dehydro-aromatization owing to the suppression of formation of carbon deposited on Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst.
Enhanced Performance of Methane Dehydro-Aromatization on Mo-based HZSM-5 Zeolite Pretreated by NH4F

Abstract:Enhanced performance of methane dehydro-aromatization reaction (MDA) were achieved on a Mo-based HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst in which HZSM-5 were pretreated by a proper amount of NH4F (Mo/HZ(F)). The results of NH3-TPD and 27Al MAS NMR demonstrated that the number of Brönsted acid sites decreased on the HZSM-5 zeolite and Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst after NH4F treatment. TGA and TPO measurements showed that the Mo/HZ(F) catalysts were highly resistant to coke deposition, which resulted mainly from the elimination of the Brönsted acid sites after the pretreatment of the HZSM-5 zeolite with NH4F.
