Abstract:Ultrafine carbon fiber webs were prepared from oxidatively stabilized electrospun poly(acrylonitrile) fibers, followed by carbonization or by further activation with steam. Capacitive de-ionization was evaluated in the batch mode. It was found that the webs exhibited considerable electrical adsorption, which was enhanced by activation with a faster electrosorption rate and a higher electrosorption capacity.

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials, one of the most important electrode materials for sea water desalination, have attracted tremendous attention. Herein, we develop a facile and effective two-step strategy to fabricate hierarchical porous carbon nanotubes/graphene/carbon nanofibers (CNTs/G/CNFs) composites for capacitive desalination application. Graphite oxide (GO), Ni2+, and Co2+ are introduced into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers by electrospinning method. During the annealing process, the PAN nanofibers are carbonized into CNFs felt, while the CNTs grow in situ on the surface of CNFs and graphite oxide are reduced into graphene simultaneously. Benefiting from the unique hierarchical porous structure, the as-prepared CNTs/G/CNFs composites have a large specific surface area of 223.9 m2 g−1 and excellent electrical conductivity. The maximum salt capacity of the composites can reach to 36.0 mg g−1, and the adsorbing capability maintains a large retention of 96.9% after five cycles. Moreover, the effective deionization time of the CNTs/G/CNFs composites lasts more than 30 min, much better than the commercial carbon fibers (C-CFs) and graphene/carbon nanofibers (G/CNFs) composites. Results suggest that the designed hierarchical porous CNTs/G/CNFs architecture could enhance the capacitive desalination properties of electrode materials. And the possible adsorption mechanism of the novel electrode materials is proposed as well.

Abstract:A high quality of activated-carbon electrode materials is of great importance for improving the electrochemical performance of desalination in membrane capacitive deionization. In this study, porous activated carbon was prepared by pyrolytic carbonization and chemical activation of lignocellulosic loofa sponge (Luffa cylindrica, LS) to act as a carbonaceous electrode. After activation, a hierarchically porous structure formed, characterized by the generation of micro-/mesopores on the channel walls. The total specific surface area and pore volume of the activated carbon material rose as the alkali/char ratio increased. The LS-based carbon electrode LSCK14, referring to the activation product produced with a KOH/char ratio of 4, displayed excellent electrochemical behavior, characterized by a remarkable specific capacitance of 93.0 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1 in 1 M NaCl solution, as well as extraordinary reversibility for capacitive charge storage. Moreover, the electrosorption capacity was investigated in batch-mode membrane capacitive deionization at 1.0 V while treating a 10 mM NaCl electrolyte. As demonstrated, the LSCK14 activated carbon electrode presented a superior electrosorption capacity of 22.5 mg g-1. The improved capacitor characteristics and high electrosorptive performance of this material can be attributed to its unique porous characteristics (high surface area, micrometer-scale channels and both meso- and micropores). Consequently, activated carbons derived from resource-recovered LS, which combine a multi-channeled structure, mesopores and micropores, were demonstrated to be a promising electrode material for electrochemical water desalination.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of electrosorption of ions developing a double layer inside nanopores was studied via a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A novel graphitized-carbon monolithic material has proven to be a good electrical double-layer capacitor that can be applied in the separation of ions from aqueous solutions. An extended electrical double-layer model indicated that the pore size distribution plays a key role in determining the double-layer capacitance in an electrosorption process. Because of the occurrence of double-layer overlapping in narrow pores, mesopores and micropores make significantly different contributions to the double-layer capacitance. Mesopores show good electrochemical accessibility. Micropores present a slow mass transfer of ions and a considerable loss of double-layer capacitance, associated with a shallow potential distribution inside pores. The formation of the diffuse layer inside the micropores determines the magnitude of the double-layer capacitance at low electrolyte concentrations and at conditions close to the point of zero charge of the material. The effect of the double-layer overlapping on the electrosorption capacitance can be reduced by increasing the pore size, electrolyte concentration, and applied potential. The results are relevant to water deionization.

Abstract:Large-scale Li-ion doped graphene/carbon nanofiber porous architectures were prepared by electrospinning homogeneous LiNO3/graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile nanofibers, followed by carbonization at 900°C. Capacitive de-ionization was measured in a dynamic mode. The architectures show excellent electrical adsorption, which is enhanced by the incorporation of LiC6 and graphene with a higher electro-adsorption capacity and a faster adsorption rate due to the large surface area (393.64m2g−1) and good conductivity.

Abstract:Constructing thick electrodes with both high strength and porous characteristics is challenging but critical to improve the desalination performance of flow-through capacitive deionization (FTCDI). Different from the most reported electrodes composed of carbon nanomaterials, micron-sized carbon fibers are more advantageous due to the innate excellent mechanical stability and macroscopic porous fibrous structure. Herein, we reported the preoxidation-tuned cellulose-derived carbon fibers (POCF) with improved specific surface area, pore volume, hydrophilicity, and carbon defect degree by precisely-controlled preoxidation process, resulting in enhanced electrochemical activity and sites. Further studies of the cellulose pyrolysis mechanism disclose that preoxidation temperature has a crucial influence on the carbon yield and electrical conductivity, which significantly affect the desalination capacity of the integrated (current collector-free and binder-free) POCF electrode. Compared with the conventional activated carbon-coated electrode and commercial activated carbon fibers cloth electrode, the POCF electrode exhibits outstanding desalination performance due to the synergistic effect of high active materials loading and good electrical conductivity. Most importantly, the desalination capacity of POCF electrode realizes the linear growth with 4-fold enhancement by increasing the thickness and remains almost unchanged even up to a large size of 120 cm 2 , indicating unlimited ion diffusion and excellent scalability. Impressively, an ultrahigh areal salt ion adsorption capacity of 0.76 mg cm −2 is achieved for the 2.4 mm thick POCF electrode. Our work successfully validates the feasibility and superiority of the POCF in constructing thick electrodes for achieving high areal desalination performance.

Boosting Capacitive Deionization Performance of Commercial Carbon Fibers Cloth via Structural Regulation Based on Catalytic‐Etching Effect

Abstract:Monolithic carbon electrodes with robust mechanical integrity and porous architecture are highly desired for capacitive deionization (CDI) but remains challenging. Owing to the excellent mechanical strength and electroconductivity, commercial carbon fibers cloth (CF) demonstrates great potential as high-performance electrodes for ions storage. Despite this, its direct application on CDI is rarely reported in terms of limited pore structure and natural hydrophobicity. Herein, a powerful metal-organic framework (MOF)-engaged structural regulation strategy is developed to boost the desalination properties of CF. The obtained porous CF (PCF) features hierarchical porous structure and hydrophilic surface providing abundant ions-accessible sites, and continuous graphitized carbon core ensuring rapid electrons transport. The catalytic-etching mechanism involving oxidation of Co and subsequent carbonthermal reduction is proposed and highly relies on annealing temperature and holding time. When directly evaluated as current collector-free CDI electrode, the PCF demonstrates much superior desalination capability than pristine CF, and remarkable cyclic stability up to 20 h with negligible degeneration. Particularly, the PCF-1000 showcases the highest areal salt adsorption capacity of 0.037 mg cm-2 among carbon microfibers. Moreover, monolithic PCF-CNTs with increased active sites and good structural integrity by in-situ growth of CNTs are further fabricated to enhance the desalination performance (0.051 mg cm-2). This work demonstrates the great potential of CF in constructing high-efficient and robust monolithic electrode for CDI.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an alternative, effective and environmentally friendly technology for desalination of brackish water. The performance of the CDI device is highly determined by the electrode materials. In this paper, a composite of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in activated carbon nanofiber (ACF) was prepared by a direct co-electrospinning way and subsequent CO2 activation. The introduction of CNTs can greatly improve the conductivity while the CO2-mediated activation can render the final product with high porosity. As such, the hybrid structure can provide an excellent storage space and pathways for ion adsorption and conduction. When evaluated as electrode materials for CDI, the as-prepared CNT/ACF composites with higher electrical conductivity and mesopore ratios exhibited higher electrosorption capacity and good regeneration performance in comparison with the pure ACF.

Abstract:To address limited desalination capacity and insufficient charge efficiency for carbon materials in capacitive deionization (CDI), a solid–liquid synergistic oxidation strategy of potassium pertechnetate (VI) for pitch was proposed to construct porous carbon with a reasonable pore structure and high reactive surface. On the one hand, K 2 FeO 4 is first utilized for the solid-phase oxidation (SPO) of pitch by a high-energy ball mill, introducing rich oxygen-containing groups such as ether bonds. Meanwhile, dehydro-condensation reactions occurred during SPO, resulting in the formation of the oxidized pitch with a high degree of condensation. Importantly, the pyrolysis yield of the oxidized pitch is as high as 46.9 % at 800 °C, almost twice that of the pristine pitch, meaning that the oxidized pitch with high polymer degree and rich C-O bridge bonds facilitates the carbon fixation and emission reduction during carbonization. On the other hand, the self-oxidation of K 2 FeO 4 in aqueous solution forms bifunctional activators (KOH and Fe(OH) 3 ) for the preparation of pitch-based porous carbon. Benefiting from the crosslinking structure of oxidized pitch and the multi-effective activation, the prepared porous carbon (H-CBPF) exhibits a robust layered stacking topology with a high surface area and oxygen content. Thereby, it can deliver an excellent salt adsorption capacity (SAC) of 22.1 mg g −1 with an average desalination rate of 1.89 mg g −1 min −1 and a high charge efficiency of 85 % at 1.2 V in 500 mg L -1 NaCl solution. This work opens up a green and economical route for the preparation of pitch-derived porous carbon for high-performance CDI.

Abstract:Abstract Previous papers about electrospun carbon nanofibers do not provide systemic understandings about how in situ activation agents affect the porous structure of carbon nanofibers. In this study, poly(vinylpyrrolidone), poly(methyl methacrylate), and high‐amylose starch (HAS) are used as activation agent to separately prepare porous carbon nanofibers from electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibers, and the effects of the polymer activation agents on the porous structure and supercapacitive properties of the resulting carbon nanofibers are examined. The studies indicate that melting point and decomposition temperature are two important parameters deciding the pore size profile. The one with high melting point and low decomposition temperature, such as HAS, allows to form micropore‐dominant porous structure with large specific surface area. The HAS‐activated carbon nanofibers have a micropore specific surface area as high as ≈809 m 2 g −1 , total pore volume of ≈0.42 cm 3 g −1 , and micropore content as high as ≈59%. The corresponding electrodes have a capacitance of 282 F g −1 at the current density of 1.0 A g −1 with excellent cycling durability. These novel understandings may be useful for the development of effective carbon nanofibers for high‐performance supercapacitor and other applications.

Abstract:Active carbons simultaneously possessing large surface area (>2000 m 2 /g) and high pore volume (>2.0 cm 3 /g) are pretty promising electrode materials for capacitive desalination. However, it is challenging to find a simple, cheap, and scalable method for preparing such materials. In this research, H 3 PO 4 -loaded coconut shell was fast heated in steam flow to yield active carbon for capacitive desalination. The as-yielded active carbon simultaneously displayed large specific surface area (2869 m 2 /g), high pore volume (2.26 cm 3 /g), and big micropore volume (0.83 cm 3 /g). Because of these characteristics, the carbon showed an electrosorption capacity of 64.1 mg/g in a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) configuration at 1.2 V in 500 mg/L NaCl solution. The capacity ranked among the highest values ever reported for C-based materials. The capacity retention exceeded 86 % after 20 adsorption/desorption cycles. Besides, the carbon showed high charge efficiency (92.4 %) and desalination rate. This research was beneficial for scalable synthesis of carbon materials for CDI.

Abstract:Activated-carbon-electrodes are widely used in capacitive deionization (CDI). However, the desalination capacity of most activated carbons remains to be improved, which makes it necessary to explore activated carbons with special structure and improved desalination capacity. In this context, we studied the desalination performance of super activated carbons with ultra-high total pore volume (V Tot). This carbon showed a salt adsorption capacity of 27.2 mg/g in 500 mg/L NaCl solution at 1.2 V, which ranked among the highest value ever reported for activated carbons. The high adsorption capacity was due to the large V Tot caused by the abundant presence of both micropores and mesopores in the material. The adsorption capacity of the carbon after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles (saturated adsorption capacity) was as high as 67.6 mg/g, which was dominated by V Tot and water contact angle. The sample also showed excellent desalination rate and superior charge efficiency (76.5%). This study indicated that superior desalination performance could be obtained by using super activated carbon with high pore volume as a CDI electrode material.

Abstract:Porous carbons have attracted great attention in capacitive deionization (CDI), benefiting from their high surface areas and abundant adsorption sites. However, the sluggish adsorption rate and poor cycling stability of carbons are still concerns, which are caused by the insufficient ion-accessible networks and the side reactions (the co-ion repulsion and oxidative corrosion). Herein, inspired by the blood vessels in organisms, mesoporous hollow carbon fibers (HCF) were successfully synthesized via a template assisted coaxial electrospinning strategy. Subsequently, the surface charge of HCF was modified by various amino acids (arginine (HCF-Arg) and aspartic acid (HCF-Asp)). Combining structure design and surface modulation, these freestanding HCFs present enhanced desalination rate and stability, in which the hierarchal vasculature facilitates electron/ion transport, and the functionalized surface suppresses the side reactions. Impressively, when HCF-Asp and HCF-Arg serve as cathode and anode respectively, the asymmetric CDI device provides an excellent salt adsorption capacity of 45.6 mg g −1 , a fast salt adsorption rate of 14.0 mg g −1 min −1 and a superior cycling stability up to 80 cycles. In short, this work evidenced an integrated strategy to exploiting carbon materials with outstanding capacity and stability for high-performance capacitive deionization.

Abstract:Capacitive seawater desalination using non-grid-connected wind power provides an effective alternative to scarce water resources. Capacitive desalination uses a DC power supply and electrostatic charge of electrochemical double layer for ion removal is a promising technology for desalting applications. The influencing factors of the desalination technique (such as voltages, flow velocity and concentration of electrolytes) and the properties of activated carbon electrodes for capacitive desalination were studied by the potentiostatic charge/discharge technique and comparing the equipotential adsorption isotherms of activated carbon electrodes to alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides. It was found that the properties of activated carbon electrodes for ion removal were determined by the operating voltage and flow velocity of the solution. Appropriately higher voltage resulted greater degree of adsorption. Adsorption amount of activated carbons to alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides correlated with interaction between the ions and solvent. The Adsorption amount to alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides ranged in the list of K+ > Na+ > Li+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ and it seemed that ion adsorption on the surface of activated carbon is correlative with their hydrated ionic radius.

Abstract:Self-standing thiol-functionalized fibrous membrane with bimodal pore structure was successfully fabricated through the combination of electrospinning and surfactant-directing pore formation technique. We also found that the interference of electric field as well as the rapid solvent evaporation during the electrospinning process has a negative effect on the formation of ordered mesoporous structures. As high-performance adsorption-based filtration system, such hierarchically structured membrane is found to efficiently remove Cu (II) ions under high flux.

Abstract:Highly porous carbon materials with abundant active adsorption sites are desirable for capacitive deionization (CDI). However, their limited salt adsorption capacity, slow desalination rate, and sensitivity to salt concentrations hinder practical applications in low salinity water treatment. In this study, we successfully synthesized a hierarchically porous carbon nanofiber electrode infused with ZnFe 2 O 4 prepared by electrospinning the Fe III -MOF-5/benzoxazine/polyacrylonitrile (Fe III -MOF-5/BA-a/PAN) system, followed by high-temperature curing, KOH activation, and carbonization processes. The activated electrode material exhibited remarkable characteristics, including an exceptionally high specific surface area of 2506.73 m 2 g −1 and significantly enhanced mesoporosity. Results demonstrated pseudo-capacitive behavior with a specific capacitance of 149.3 F g −1 and excellent electrochemical cycling stability. Notably, the electrode showed significant adsorption capacities in a 1000 mg L −1 NaCl solution at applied potentials of 1.2 and 1.6 V, with values of 74.27 and 88.95 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process followed both the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models. These findings highlight the promising potential of the ZnFe 2 O 4 -infused porous carbon nanofiber electrode for efficient desalination and ion removal applications.

Abstract:Introduction Capacitive deionization (CDI), which is ion electrosorption onto the surface of porous materials to remove ions from aqueous solutions, may serve as an energy-efficient alternative for the desalination of brackish water comparing with conventional desalination methods such as membrane separation and thermal distillation [1]. The CDI process operates at low direct voltages. Ions adsorbed are hold in the electrical double layers (EDL) near charged surface of an electrode and could be released back into bulk solution by canceling the potential difference between the electrodes [1]. No additional chemicals are required for regeneration. The part of discharging energy is able to be restored for the energy recycling. A prerequisite for the high deionization efficiency of CDI method is the demand for the high electrosorptive capacity endowed by the electrode materials. To obtain the objective, it is important that a large surface area is created and thus typical materials such as high specific surface area (SSA) materials are used. High SSA, a key factor of electrosorptive capacity, is determined mainly by the contribution of the surface area of mesopores and micropores present in carbon materials. SSA is explicitly related to pore size, thus it is especially important to understand its effect on electrosorptive capacity. The latest research in the related field of electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) has shown an anomalous increase in carbon capacitance at pore sizes less than 1 nm [2]. In CDI, the pore openings of activated carbons were controllably tuned to exhibit excellent electrochemical selectivity for ions [3]. Electrosorptive performance with modified activated carbon cloth as CDI electrodes was also investigated [4]. Up to now, more emphasis is focused on high SSA of porous carbon materials with the order of 10 m/g. Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are typical microporous materials with large surface areas and good conductivity along fiber axis. Thus they can serve as candidate for active component of CDI electrodes. The aim in present work is to identify effect of SSA on capacitive electrosorptive capacity using activated carbon materials electrodes.
Electrospun Carbon Nanofiber Networks from Phenolic Resin for Capacitive Deionization

Abstract:The performance of capacitive deionization (CDI) mainly relies on the ion electrosorption capability. Here, we introduce a kind of free-standing, highly porous carbon nanofiber (CNF) networks with enhanced desalination capacity. The CNF networks were easily prepared by electrospinning of phenolic resin (PhR) precursor followed by one-step carbonization step. The as-obtained PhR-based CNF networks exhibited characteristics of high flexibility, conductivity and specific surface area (SSA) along with favorable porosity, and hence demonstrated enhanced desalination capacity. When used as CDI electrodes, the PhR-based CNF networks have demonstrated a desalination capacity of 50.1mgg−1 toward 2000mgL−1 brackish water at 1.2V, much better than most reported data thus far. More importantly, easy recovery and good reproducibility could be obtained for such electrodes. Therefore, construction of PhR-based CNF network electrodes offers remarkable opportunities for improving CDI capabilities and reliability given its simplicity, easy operation, and high performance.
Electrosorption for Organic Pollutants Removal and Desalination by Graphite and Activated Carbon Fiber Composite Electrodes

Abstract:This paper investigates a new type of carbon-based electrodes, which were equipped with graphite and activated carbon fiber composite, to improve the performance of electrosorption. The results indicated that the highest desalination efficiency achieved 55 % and the optimal condition was 1.6 V voltage, 60 min retention time and 1.0 cm electrode distance. Freundlich isotherms successfully fitted with the respective behavior of the composite electrode and provided theoretical evidence for the desalination performance improvement. Applied in real black liquor of refined cotton, the graphite and activated carbon fiber composite electrodes achieved high removal efficiency for conductivity (59 %) and CODCr (76 %). Similar removal performance was also observed in sodium copper chlorophyll wastewater, and removal efficiency was 37 % for conductivity and 14 % for CODCr. For the first time, this research demonstrated the biodegradability improvement in real industrial wastewater via electrosorption treatment, suggesting a potential pretreatment technique for high-salinity wastewater.
