What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is the technical challenges in electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO_2). Specifically, the paper focuses on the development of effective heterogeneous molecular catalysts, which exhibit excellent activity, selectivity, stability and economy in the electrocatalytic CO_2 reduction process. The paper points out that although homogeneous molecular catalysts are well - defined in structure, which is conducive to understanding the CO_2 reduction mechanism and can be easily adjusted in performance through organic synthesis techniques, there are some inherent disadvantages in their use in homogeneous solutions, such as limited solvent selection, low molecular utilization, difficulty in recovery and possible catalyst deactivation caused by polymerization or dimerization. In order to overcome these disadvantages, the paper explores the strategy of heterogenizing homogeneous molecular catalysts, that is, fixing molecular catalysts on substrates through covalent or non - covalent bonding, periodic assembly and other methods, so as to improve the utilization efficiency of catalysts, simplify post - treatment steps, reduce the loss of catalysts and possibly improve the stability of catalysts. In addition, the paper also discusses the factors affecting the activity of such catalysts and future research directions, aiming to promote the development of CO_2 electrocatalytic reduction technology to address the global energy crisis and carbon emission problems. Through this series of discussions, the paper hopes to provide readers with a comprehensive review of the latest progress in the application of heterogeneous molecular catalysts in CO_2 electrocatalytic reduction and encourage more research efforts to be put into this field.
