Abstract:The continuously increasing CO2 released from human activities poses a great threat to human survival by fluctuating global climate and disturbing carbon balance among the four reservoirs of the biosphere, earth, air, and water. Converting CO2 to value-added feedstocks via electrocatalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been regarded as one of the most attractive routes to re-balance the carbon cycle, thanks to its multiple advantages of mild operating conditions, easy handling, tunable products and the potential of synergy with the rapidly increasing renewable energy (i.e., solar, wind). Instead of focusing on a special topic of electrocatalysts for the CO2RR that have been extensively reviewed elsewhere, we herein present a rather comprehensive review of the recent research progress, in the view of associated value-added products upon selective electrocatalytic CO2 conversion. We initially provide an overview of the history and the fundamental science regarding the electrocatalytic CO2RR, with a special introduction to the design, preparation, and performance evaluation of electrocatalysts, the factors influencing the CO2RR, and the associated theoretical calculations. Emphasis will then be given to the emerging trends of selective electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 into a variety of value-added products. The structure-performance relationship and mechanism will also be discussed and investigated. The outlooks for CO2 electrocatalysis, including the challenges and opportunities in the development of new electrocatalysts, electrolyzers, the recently rising operando fundamental studies, and the feasibility of industrial applications are finally summarized.

Abstract:The worldwide unrestrained emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) has caused serious environmental pollution and climate change issues. For the sustainable development of human civilization, it is very desirable to convert CO2 to renewable fuels through clean and economical chemical processes. Recently, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion is regarded as a prospective pathway for the recycling of carbon resource and the generation of sustainable fuels. In this review, recent research advances in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction are summarized from both experimental and theoretical aspects. The referred electrocatalysts are divided into different classes, including metal-organic complexes, metals, metal alloys, inorganic metal compounds and carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials. Moreover, the selective formation processes of different reductive products, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-), monoxide carbon (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), etc. are introduced in detail, respectively. Owing to the limited energy efficiency, unmanageable selectivity, low stability, and indeterminate mechanisms of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, there are still many tough challenges need to be addressed. In view of this, the current research trends to overcome these obstacles in CO2 electroreduction field are summarized. We expect that this review will provide new insights into the further technique development and practical applications of CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECO2R) is a well-established method for converting waste CO2 gas into valuable products. Carbon monoxide (CO) is widely studied for its advantages in the electrochemical catalytic reduction of CO2, which is of great importance to the chemical industry. As research on the conversion of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO has become more widespread, scholars have focused on basic research for industrialization. This paper summarizes the catalysts, electrolytes, and electrolyzers including membranes involved in the reaction process of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO, with an emphasis on intrinsic mechanism and conversion selection properties such as Faradaic efficiency, current density, and overpotential. Catalysts are classified into two main research categories: carbon-based and non-carbon-based, encompassing various aspects such as size, morphology, grain boundary density tuning, surface modification, and metal-support interaction. Additionally, the abundance of copper metal combined with other metals as catalysts, and single-atom catalysts composed of transition metals are highlighted for their significantly different catalytic behaviors and recent key advancements. For industrial-scale production, we present the types of electrolytes suitable for large-scale CO manufacturing and the structure of the electrolyzer. Finally, we provide a brief review of the future direction of CO2 electrolysis for real-world CO production, focusing on catalyst optimization, technological breakthroughs, electrolyzer design as well as working conditions, membrane innovations, and energy utilization.

Abstract:This work mainly concludes the synergistic effect, strain effect, ligand effect, and defect effect for CO2 reduction. Then, the research progress of C2 products are expounded based on the number of electrons transferred during CO2 reduction process. Finally, the membrane electrode is also introduced from the three aspects. Converting CO2 into high value‐added chemicals by renewable energy directly alleviates the problem of resource shortages, while also reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Among various CO2 reduction methods, CO2 electroreduction has attracted much attention because of its moderate operating conditions and a green and easy‐to‐scale strategy. In this work, the four catalyst enhancement mechanisms: synergistic effect, strain effect, ligand effect, and defect effect are briefly described. Then, the catalytic mechanisms of the C2 products are fully expounded, depending on the number of transferred electrons during the CO2 reduction process. In addition, the membrane electrode is also introduced from the three aspects of ion exchange membrane, catalyst layer, and gas diffusion layer. Finally, the developing direction of CO2 reduction reaction is proposed. This work provides an essential guide for design and preparation of CO2 electroreduction catalysts and fully summarized the intrinsic catalysis mechanism, which is beneficial to the development of CO2 conversion in the future.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most promising technologies available to mitigate environmental problems introduced by the continuous increase in its concentration that has occurred since the industrial revolution. This technology also is attractive from the viewpoint that it can be based on carbon-neutral energy by converting CO2 into fuels and value-added chemicals using solar or other forms of renewable energy. In this review, fundamental concepts related to electrocatalysis, the electrical double layer, physical and chemical properties of CO2, the interaction of CO2 with electrode surfaces, and the sources of carbon and proton that underpin this technology are provided. Insights into recent mechanisms proposed for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 also are provided along with a survey of progress in the rational design of new electrocatalysts. Discussion on achievements in the field is focused on the variation in products formed by different electrocatalysts and the design strategies that have been introduced to alter the electronic and geometric properties of the electrocatalysts. Finally, recommendations for achieving further advances in electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 in a systematic manner are presented.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction under ambient conditions is a promising pathway for conversion of CO2 into value‐added products. In recent years, great achievements have been obtained in the understanding the mechanism and development of efficient and selective catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction. However, the electrochemical CO2 reduction is still far from practical applications. Based on the gap between current research and practical applications, the state‐of‐the‐art of the theoretical and experiment investigations on different electrocatalysts for the electrocatalysis of CO2 to CH4 is systematically and constructively reviewed. First of all, strategies for enhancing the catalytic activity and selectivity of electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CH4 are also examined in this review. The modulated strategies mainly involve the following aspects: i) tuning the applied potentials, ii) morphology engineering, iii) crystallographic facets engineering, iv) defect engineering, v) alloying. Furthermore, the influence of the electrolyte on the activity and selectivity for electrocatalysis of CO2 to CH4 is also reviewed. This review will build a systematic understanding in the electrochemical CO2 reduction to CH4 and may help to provide new insight for designing and optimizing the catalysts and/or electrolyte.

Abstract:Electrochemical synthesis of value-added chemicals from CO and H2O powered by renewable energy is a promising technique to supplement, if not eventually replace, the Fischer–Tropsch process, which requires high energy input (i.e., typical temperatures of 200–400 °C and pressures of 10–200 atm) and large-scale reactors that are difficult to match to the disperse renewable energy sources. Moreover, this technique is also ideal for implementing the electroreduction of CO2 using a tandem strategy because many catalysts can convert CO2 to CO with high efficiency. However, the direct reduction of CO2 to more valuable hydrocarbons and oxygenates is hindered by the lack of efficient catalysts. This perspective highlights the current understanding and progress of CO electroreduction from both experimental and computational approaches. The challenges that must be overcome for further development are also identified and discussed.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 into value-added chemicals has been explored as a promising solution to realize carbon neutrality and inhibit global warming. This involves utilizing the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce a variety of single-carbon (C-1) and multi-carbon (C2+) products. Additionally, the electrolyte solution in the CO2RR system can be enriched with nitrogen sources (such as NO3-, NO2-, N-2, or NO) to enable the synthesis of organonitrogen compounds via C-N coupling reactions. However, the electrochemical conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals still faces challenges in terms of low product yield, poor faradaic efficiency (FE), and unclear understanding of the reaction mechanism. This review summarizes the promising strategies aimed at achieving selective production of diverse carbon-containing products, including CO, formate, hydrocarbons, alcohols, and organonitrogen compounds. These approaches involve the rational design of electrocatalysts and the construction of coupled electrocatalytic reaction systems. Moreover, this review presents the underlying reaction mechanisms, identifies the existing challenges, and highlights the prospects of the electrosynthesis processes. The aim is to offer valuable insights and guidance for future research on the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 into carbon-containing products of enhanced value-added potential.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are an important environmental issue that causes greenhouse and climate change effects on the earth. Nowadays, CO2 has various conversion methods to be a potential carbon resource, such as photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photo-electrocatalytic. CO2 conversion into value-added products has many advantages, including facile control of the reaction rate by adjusting the applied voltage and minimal environmental pollution. The development of efficient electrocatalysts and improving their viability with appropriate reactor designs is essential for the commercialization of this environmentally friendly method. In addition, microbial electrosynthesis which utilizes an electroactive bio-film electrode as a catalyst can be considered as another option to reduce CO2. This review highlights the methods which can contribute to the increase in efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R) processes through electrode structure with the introduction of various electrolytes such as ionic liquid, sulfate, and bicarbonate electrolytes, with the control of pH and with the control of the operating pressure and temperature of the electrolyzer. It also presents the research status, a fundamental understanding of carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanisms, the development of electrochemical CO2R technologies, and challenges and opportunities for future research.

Abstract:The electrochemical process of coupling electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and organic conversion reaction can effectively reduce the reaction overpotential and obtain value-added chemicals. Moreover, because of the diversity of substrates and the designability of coupling forms, more and more attention has been paid to this field. This review systematically summarizes the research progress of coupling electrolysis in recent years, (1) co-electrolysis of CO2 and organics at the cathode to obtain specific products with high selectivity, (2) replacing traditional anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with other valuable oxidation reactions to improve energy utilization efficiency and economic benefits of CO2 conversion, (3) in an electrolytic cell without membrane, the cathode and anode jointly transform CO2 and organics to redox products. We hope that the examples and insights on coupling electrolysis introduced in this review can inspire researchers to further explore and innovate in this direction.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to valued products is a promising way to mitigate the greenhouse effect, as this reaction makes use of the excess CO2 in the atmosphere and at the same time forms valued fuels to partially fulfill the energy demand for human beings. Among these valued products, methane is considered a high-value product with a high energy density. This review systematically summarizes the recently studied reaction mechanisms for CO2 electroreduction to CH4. It guides us in designing effective electrocatalysts with an improved electrocatalytic performance. In addition, we briefly summarize the recent progress on CO2 electroreduction into CH4 from the instructive catalyst design, including catalyst structure engineering and catalyst component engineering, and then briefly discuss the electrolyte effect. Furthermore, we also provide a simplified techno-economic analysis of this technology. These summaries are helpful for beginners to rapidly master the contents related to the electroreduction of carbon dioxide to methane and also help to promote the further development of this field.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction can produce valuable carbonaceous compounds that are in significant demand, due to its ability to decrease the accumulated atmospheric CO 2 and improve the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. Considering the sluggish kinetics of CO 2 reduction reaction, the multielectron–proton transfer process, and the inevitable mixed reduction products, designing efficient and robust electrocatalysts that benefit from the structure–activity relationship is the focus to promote CO 2 conversion. In this review, various metal‐based materials are first classified and discussed in terms of their structural and elemental compositions for catalytic behaviors. Afterward, the most intrinsic microstructural/electronic effects as well as the influence of compositional alteration on the catalyst activity, selectivity, and stability are summarized. Additionally, recent attempts to develop the assigned electrochemical cells are surveyed and described from a technological point of view.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission has caused greenhouse gas pollution worldwide. Hence, strengthening CO2 recycling is necessary. CO2 electroreduction reaction (CRR) is recognized as a promising approach to utilize waste CO2. Electrocatalysts in the CRR process play a critical role in determining the selectivity and activity of CRR. Different types of electrocatalysts are introduced in this review: noble metals and their derived compounds, transition metals and their derived compounds, organic polymer, and carbon-based materials, as well as their major products, Faradaic efficiency, current density, and onset potential. Furthermore, this paper overviews the recent progress of the following two major applications of CRR according to the different energy conversion methods: electricity generation and formation of valuable carbonaceous products. Considering electricity generation devices, the electrochemical properties of metal–CO2 batteries, including Li–CO2, Na–CO2, Al–CO2, and Zn–CO2 batteries, are mainly summarized. Finally, different pathways of CO2 electroreduction to carbon-based fuels is presented, and their reaction mechanisms are illustrated. This review provides a clear and innovative insight into the entire reaction process of CRR, guiding the new electrocatalysts design, state-of-the-art analysis technique application, and reaction system innovation.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from fossil fuel utilization poses a potential thread to global climate. Recent development in electrochemical CO2 reduction opens up new possibilities of utilization of CO2 as a carbon feedstock for fuel generation and commodity chemicals. This article reviewed progress related to electrochemical CO2 reduction in the past few years, with a focus on new development of CO2 reduction electrocatalysts, mechanistic understanding of CO2 electro-reduction reaction, and process engineering efforts in CO2 electrolyzers. Additionally, critical issues associated with current state-of-art systems were identified and potential directions for future studies were discussed. Abstract:In view of the climate changes caused by the continuously rising levels of atmospheric CO2 , advanced technologies associated with CO2 conversion are highly desirable. In recent decades, electrochemical reduction of CO2 has been extensively studied since it can reduce CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels. Considering the sluggish reaction kinetics of the CO2 molecule, efficient and robust electrocatalysts are required to promote this conversion reaction. Here, recent progress and opportunities in inorganic heterogeneous electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction are discussed, from the viewpoint of both experimental and computational aspects. Based on elemental composition, the inorganic catalysts presented here are classified into four groups: metals, transition-metal oxides, transition-metal chalcogenides, and carbon-based materials. However, despite encouraging accomplishments made in this area, substantial advances in CO2 electrolysis are still needed to meet the criteria for practical applications.
