Abstract:CO₂, emitted mainly from fossil fuel combustion, is one of the major greenhouse gases. CO₂ could be converted into more valuable chemical feedstocks including CO, HCOOH, HCHO, CH₃OH, or CH₄. To reduce CO₂, catalysts were designed and their unique characteristics were utilized based on types of reaction processes, including catalytic hydrogenation, complex metal hydrides, photocatalysis, biological reduction, and electrochemical reduction. Indeed, the electroreduction method has received much consideration lately due to the simple operation, as well as environmentally friendly procedures that need to be optimized by both of the catalysts and the electrochemical process. In the past few decades, we have witnessed an explosion in development in materials science-especially in regards to the porous crystalline materials based on the strong covalent bond of the organic linkers containing light elements (Covalent organic frameworks, COFs), as well as the hybrid materials that possess organic backbones and inorganic metal-oxo clusters (Metal-organic frameworks, MOFs). Owing to the large surface area and high active site density that belong to these tailorable structures, MOFs and COFs can be applied to many practical applications, such as gas storage and separation, drug release, sensing, and catalysis. Beyond those applications, which have been abundantly studied since the 1990s, CO₂ reduction catalyzed by reticular and extended structures of MOFs or COFs has been more recently turned to the next step of state-of-the-art application. In this perspective, we highlight the achievement of homogeneous catalysts used for CO₂ electrochemical conversion and contrast it with the advances in new porous catalyst-based reticular chemistry. We then discuss the role of new catalytic systems designed in light of reticular chemistry in the heterogeneous-catalyzed reduction of CO₂.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 provides a sustainable way to mitigate CO2 emissions, as well as store intermittent electrical energy into chemicals. However, its slow kinetics and the lack of ability to control the products of the reaction inhibit its industrial applications. In addition, the immature mechanistic understanding of the reduction process makes it difficult to develop a selective, scalable, and stable electrocatalyst. Carbon-based materials are widely considered as a stable and abundant alternative to metals for catalyzing some of the key electrochemical reactions, including the CO2 reduction reaction. In this context, recent research advances in the development of heterogeneous nanostructured carbon-based catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO2 are summarized. The leading factors for consideration in carbon-based catalyst research are discussed by analyzing the main challenges faced by electrochemical reduction of CO2 . Then the emerging metal-free doped carbon and aromatic N-heterocycle catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO2 with an emphasis on the formation of multicarbon hydrocarbons and oxygenates are discussed. Following that, the recent progress in metal-nitrogen-carbon structures as an extension of carbon-based catalysts is scrutinized. Finally, an outlook for the future development of catalysts as well as the whole electrochemical system for CO2 reduction is provided.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been a fast developing and innovative topic in recent years. It may enable efficient reduction of carbon emission, as well as store renewable electricity into chemical bonds in fuels or other chemicals. However, due to the complexity of reaction factors and mechanisms, the activity and selectivity of CO2RR have yet to be further optimized in order to realize commercial applications. Specifically, the high selectivity of CO2 reduction products (especially for multi-electron-transfer and multi-carbon reduction products), lower overpotentials, high energy efficiencies, good stability, and low fabrication cost are required. In this Spotlight, we focus on the design of active sites in heterogeneous catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction, and we provide several strategies to target those challenges in this field. First, as the major side reaction in aqueous solutions, the hydrogen evolution reaction can be inhibited by increasing the energy barrier for H-2 formation and tuning the electrolyte diffusion toward the electrocatalyst surface, thus enhancing the Faradaic efficiencies of CO2RR products. Second, the proximity of adjacent catalytic sites suggests a strong capability for tuning the coupling efficiency of multiple carbon atoms. Third, the active sites of heterogeneous electrocatalysts can be generated by different defects, including single-atom doping, anion vacancy, alloy formation, and lattice defects, which can lead to distinctively different production distributions. Finally, a solar-driven electrocatalytic CO2 reduction system was developed, enabling a high solar-to-fuel photoconversion efficiency. Further investigations of heterogeneous electrocatalysts and reaction systems are expected to enhance the electrochemical CO2RR performances toward the application level.

Abstract:Molecular catalysts (metal complexes), with molecularly defined uniform active sites and atomically precise structural tailorability allowing for regulating catalytic performance through metal- and ligand-centered engineering and elucidating reaction mechanisms via routine photoelectrochemical characterizations, have been increasingly explored for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR). However, their poor stability and low catalytic current density are undesirable for practical applications. Heterogenizing discrete molecular catalysts can potentially surmount these issues, and the resulting integrated catalysts largely share catalytical properties with their discrete molecular counterparts, which bridge the gap between heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis and combine their advantages. This minireview surveys advances in design and regulation of molecular catalysts such as porphyrin, phthalocyanine, and bipyridine-based metal complexes and their integrated catalytic materials for selective ECR.

Abstract:A broad review of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic approaches toward CO2 reduction using organic, organometallic, and bioorganic systems is provided. Electrochemical, bioelectrochemical and photoelectrochemical approaches are discussed in terms of their faradaic efficiencies, overpotentials and reaction mechanisms. Organometallic complexes as well as semiconductors and their homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic activities are compared to enzymes. In both cases, their immobilization on electrodes is discussed and compared to homogeneous catalysts in solution.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is of great importance to tackle the rising CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The CO2RR can be driven by renewable energy sources, producing precious chemicals and fuels, with the implementation of this process largely relying on the development of low‐cost and efficient electrocatalysts. Recently, a range of heterogeneous and potentially low‐cost single‐atom catalysts (SACs) containing non‐precious metals coordinated to earth‐abundant elements have emerged as promising candidates for the CO2RR. Unfortunately, the real catalytically active centers and the key factors that govern the catalytic performance of these SACs remain ambiguous. Here, this ambiguity is addressed by developing a fundamental understanding of the CO2RR‐to‐CO process on SACs, as CO accounts for the major product from CO2RR on SACs. The reaction mechanism, the rate‐determining steps, and the key factors that control the activity and selectivity are analyzed from both experimental and theoretical studies. Then, the synthesis, characterization, and the CO2RR performance of SACs are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future pathways are highlighted in the hope of guiding the design of the SACs to promote and understand the CO2RR on SACs.

Abstract:Heterostructured catalysts are hybrid materials that contain interfaces between their constituents formed through combinations of multiple solid‐state materials. The presence of multiple constituents institutes a synergistic effect that endows the catalyst with superior performance and appreciable potential in a diverse range of catalytic applications, including electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide. These promising catalysts can support a feasible method for large‐scale processing of valuable carbonaceous feedstock or fuel generation and alleviation of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Such technologies will serve as the much‐needed remedy for the global energy and environmental crisis. A broad spectrum of recently developed heterostructured catalysts pertaining to electrocatalytic and photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction is evaluated. The insights included are of relevance to refresh fundamentals pertaining to the electron transfer processes leading to carbon dioxide reduction and the mechanistic reduction pathways yielding a possible multitude of carbonaceous products. Detailed discussions provide a rational understanding of how the hybrid and resultant properties from various combinations are useful in enhancing catalytic function. Lastly, the performance profiles of various catalyst structures together with modification strategies employed are of interest to highlight the current challenges to and directions for future catalyst development.

Transition metal-based catalysts for the electrochemical CO2 reduction: from atoms and molecules to nanostructured materials

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) powered by renewable energy is an attractive sustainable approach to mitigate CO2 emissions and to produce fuels or value-added chemicals. In order to tackle the challenges related to selectivity, activity, overpotential and durability, transition metal-based catalysts have been widely investigated in the last decades. In an effort to bridge the gap between the fields of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, this review aims to survey the main strategies explored for the rational design of a wide variety of different metal catalysts, ranging from molecular systems to single-atom and nanostructured catalysts. Transition metal complexes containing heme and non-heme ligands have been selected to discuss the recent advances in the understanding of the structure-function relationship in molecular homogeneous catalysis as well as to summarize the main approaches proposed for the heterogenization or confinement of molecular catalysts on conductive surfaces. The main strategies to minimize catalyst cost are also presented, leading to atomically dispersed molecular-like M-Nx moieties embedded on 2D conducting materials. The superior performances of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and the structural similarity with their molecular analogs, suggest that transition metal catalysts containing well-defined sites may be intrinsically more active and selective towards CO2 conversion than the bulk heterogeneous materials. Finally, design approaches for metal nanoparticles (NPs) based on size, shape, and support tuning are summarized and compared to novel strategies based on the interaction with surface-bonded organic molecules. The studies herein presented show that the basic principles in molecular catalysis and organometallic chemistry can be effectively used to design new efficient and selective heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Despite enormous efforts towards development of CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) technologies, industrial-scale devices are still visibly unavailable. The development of effective CO 2 RR catalysts appears to be the most difficult challenge for this technology. Due to the well-defined active site, distinct energy levels, and tunable core structure, porphyry-type molecular catalysts (metal-porphyrins, and metal-phthalocyanines) have gained attention among the various classes of electrocatalysts. But because they are not very stable or long-lasting, getting their benchmark CO 2 RR performance is still hard. Therefore, to approach their ideal performance, researchers have conducted many experimental and theoretical analyses, altering their electronic and geometric configurations and even transitioning them from homogeneous to heterogeneous phases. The aim of this review is to provide a coherent framework for the existing literature on molecular systems for CO 2 RR and to make forward-looking suggestions for the development of optimal CO 2 RR catalysts. We critically reviewed the possible strategies for tuning and controlling the catalytic active sites, emphasizing the bridges between activity and structural features of molecular systems, and proposed logical optimization strategies to improve their performance and selectivity. Insights provided in this article would surely benefit readers to develop novel high-performing CO 2 RR electrocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:The global atmospheric CO2 concentration reached 147% of pre‐industrial levels in 2019, and is still increasing with an accelerated rate. A series of methods have been developed to convert CO2 to other non‐greenhouse molecules. Elelctrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is one of the promising methods, since it could support renewable energy. Optimizing the CO2RR system requires finding highly efficient catalysts, as well as electrolysis systems. In this essay, the development of promising heterogeneous catalysts with well‐defined active metal sites is discussed. These catalysts could be prepared by immobilizing metal cations onto chemically well‐defined substrates, such as metal‐organic frameworks, covalent‐organic frameworks, polyoxometalates, or immobilizing well‐defined molecular catalysts on conducting substrates. A clear perspective on the catalyst's structures contributes to the understanding of structure‐reactivity correlations, which could, in turn, shed light on designing better catalysts. Some methods to assist the electrocatalysis process, such as coupling with solar or heat energy, are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 provides a sustainable solution to address the intermittent renewable electricity storage while recycling CO2 to produce fuels and chemicals. Highly efficient catalytic materials and reaction systems are required to drive this process economically. This Review highlights the new trends in advancing the electrochemical reduction of CO2 by developing and designing nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts. The activity, selectivity and reaction mechanism are significantly affected by the nano effects in nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts. In the future, energy efficiency and current density in electrochemical reduction of CO2 need to be further improved to meet the requirements for practical applications.

Abstract:In view of the climate changes caused by the continuously rising levels of atmospheric CO2 , advanced technologies associated with CO2 conversion are highly desirable. In recent decades, electrochemical reduction of CO2 has been extensively studied since it can reduce CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels. Considering the sluggish reaction kinetics of the CO2 molecule, efficient and robust electrocatalysts are required to promote this conversion reaction. Here, recent progress and opportunities in inorganic heterogeneous electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction are discussed, from the viewpoint of both experimental and computational aspects. Based on elemental composition, the inorganic catalysts presented here are classified into four groups: metals, transition-metal oxides, transition-metal chalcogenides, and carbon-based materials. However, despite encouraging accomplishments made in this area, substantial advances in CO2 electrolysis are still needed to meet the criteria for practical applications. Therefore, in the last part, several promising strategies, including surface engineering, chemical modification, nanostructured catalysts, and composite materials, are proposed to facilitate the future development of CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction can produce valuable carbonaceous compounds that are in significant demand, due to its ability to decrease the accumulated atmospheric CO 2 and improve the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. Considering the sluggish kinetics of CO 2 reduction reaction, the multielectron–proton transfer process, and the inevitable mixed reduction products, designing efficient and robust electrocatalysts that benefit from the structure–activity relationship is the focus to promote CO 2 conversion. In this review, various metal‐based materials are first classified and discussed in terms of their structural and elemental compositions for catalytic behaviors. Afterward, the most intrinsic microstructural/electronic effects as well as the influence of compositional alteration on the catalyst activity, selectivity, and stability are summarized. Additionally, recent attempts to develop the assigned electrochemical cells are surveyed and described from a technological point of view.

Abstract:Rational electrocatalyst design understanding for the reduction of CO2 from atomic‐, nanoscale‐, and microscale‐level in this review are highlighted. In combination with advanced characterizations and theoretical calculations, this paper aims to establish the possible electrocatalyst structure–function relationship, providing guidelines for future study direction. The carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising route to convert CO2 into value‐added chemicals and fuels by utilizing renewable electrical energy, mitigating the greenhouse effect and depletion of fossil fuels for sustainability. Electrocatalyst plays a critical role in CO2RR whereas their rational design for achieving high activity, durability, and selectivity toward specific products confronts great challenge. In this review, rational CO2RR electrocatalyst design as well as essential understanding of nanomaterials in atomic‐, nanoscale‐, and microscale‐level are highlighted. Besides, basic concepts and setup factors related to CO2RR are systematically outlined to provide a clear and comprehensive understanding as guidance. More importantly, the authors discuss and try to uncover the electrocatalyst structure–function relationship with the assistance of electrokinetic studies, in situ characterizations, and computational techniques. Finally, current challenges and prospects are offered to shed light on future design of advanced CO2RR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide(CO2)to value-added fuels and chemicals provides a promising way to realize sustainable carbon recycling[1].Developing ro-bust electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity is critically important for efficient electrochemical CO2 re-duction reaction(CO2RR).Generally,it is challenging to achieve high efficiency and selectivity simultaneously in the CO2RR due to the multi-proton/electron transfer processes and complex reaction intermediates.Among many studied formulations,bimetallic catalysts have attracted significant attention with promising activity,selectivity,and stability[2].In particular,phase engineering of bimetallic nanocata-lysts is emerging as an effective strategy to regulate the catalyst properties by rationally tuning their atomic ar-rangements,thus providing an opportunity to explore the relationships between structures and catalytic properties[3,4].For instance,Zhang and co-workers[3]demonstrated the crystal phase-dependent C2H4 selectivity of Cu nano-materials in CO2RR.Huang and co-workers[4]created a series of phase-and structure-engineered copper-tin cata-lysts,and explored the CO2RR performances to correlate with their unique structures and phases.
