Abstract:ABSTRACTCore‐sheath structured electrospun fibers with styrene‐butadiene‐styrene (SBS) block copolymer as a rubbery core and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a hard sheath were prepared by coaxial electrospinning, and used to improve the toughness of epoxy resin. The surface of the fibers was aminated by reacting PAN with diethylenetriamine to improve the interfacial interaction between the fibers and epoxy. Scanning and transmission electron microscopies confirm the core‐sheath structure of the PAN/SBS fibers. The Charpy impact energy is increased by the addition of electrospun fibers. When the content of aminated core‐sheath fibers is 4 wt %, the Charpy impact energy is increased by 150%. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the glass transition temperature of epoxy is not decreased by the addition of core‐sheath fibers. The high impact resistance is attributed to the rubbery core of the fibers that can absorb and dissipate impact energy, and the chemical bonding between the fibers and epoxy. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The micromorphology and mechanical properties of epoxy resin modified with carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer(CTBN), CTBN/bisphenol A(BPA) and BPA have been examined respectively. The effect of different CTBN adding modes on the mechanical properties of toughened epoxy resin has been studied. It was found that the toughness of epoxy resin increased toughened by CTBN while other mechanical properties declined. In the case of 120 ℃ pre-reacted with epoxy resin for 2 h, better CTBN toughening result could be achieved. When epoxy resin modified with CTBN/BPA, the impact strength and the elongation at break increased dramatically, as well as other mechanical properties enhanced to a certain extent, and it was overcome the disadvantages of CTBN toughened epoxy resin singly. The toughening agent of BPA could also increased flexural strength, impact strength and elongation at break of epoxy resin.

Abstract:Multifunctional epoxy resins are inherently brittle due to the extremely high cross‐linking density, thus the enhancement in the toughness is rather important for the industrial application. In this work, a reactive poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(propylene glycol)‐b‐poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA) is synthesized by using an atom transfer radical polymerization to toughen trifunctional diglycidyl 4,5‐epoxy cyclohexane‐1,2‐dicarboxylate (TDE‐85). A controllable system is constructed, in which the reaction temperature of TDE‐85 with the hydroxyl of PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA is lower than with the curing agent. As a result, both heterogeneous and homogeneous structures can be formed in composites through controlling reaction temperature. It is found that the toughness of composites with the heterogeneous structure is effectively improved without sacrificing the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and glass transition temperature. Specifically, the mode‐1 critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate of TDE‐85/10 wt% PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA are increased to 0.77 MPam1/2 and 146 J/m2, respectively, which are effectively enhanced by 32.8% and 70.3%. This can be ascribed to combined toughening effects from the cavitation of the PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA phase, the matrix shear yielding, and the enhanced interface bonding strength due to the reaction between TDE‐85 and PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA. Thus, this study paves a novel strategy to improve the toughness of epoxy resin by controlling the curing reaction.

Abstract:A novel copolymer of the alpha-methacrylate macromonomer of poly(ether-sulfone) with n-butyl acrylate (PES-n-MA-co-BA) was synthesized for evaluation as a toughening agent in epoxy resins, and characterized by IR, HPLC, and UV. The effects of the copolymer (PES-n-MA-co-BA) and of blends (PES + PBA) upon the toughening of epoxy resins was investigated by tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy. The optimum content of the functional monomer in the copolymer with nBA, which has a maximum improvement of fracture toughness without any significant loss of modulus, was obtained. Studies on the morphology of the modified epoxy resin system with SEM showed that phase separation was observed during curing of both DGEBA/PES-MA-co-nBA and DGEBA/PnBA/PES systems. The mechanical test results showed that the use of a smaller amount of the copolymer of PES-5-MA and nBA or of blends of PES and PnBA leads to an effective toughening of the DGEBA resin. The blending of PES and PnBA as a modifier for epoxy resin is found to be especially promising.
Toughening of Epoxy by Nanostructures with ABA Triblock Copolymers: an Influence of Organosilicon Modification of Block Copolymer

Abstract:In this work, we investigated the effect of organosilicon modification of an ABA triblock copolymer on the morphologies, thermal properties, and fracture toughness of epoxy thermosets. First, a poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(butadiene) -block-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) triblock copolymer was synthesized through the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone by using an alpha,omega-dihydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene as the macromolecular initiator. Thereafter, the triblock was organosilicon-modified via the hydrosilylation of its midblock (viz. polybutadiene) with pentamethyldisiloxane. It was found that the organosilicon modification resulted in a switch of the nanostructure formation mechanism from reaction-induced microphase separation to self-assembly. As a consequence of the organosilicon modification, the morphological structures of the thermoset were significantly changed, and thus, the materials displayed different improvement in fracture toughness. In addition, the organosilicon modification further enhanced the surface hydrophobicity of the materials.
Toughening of epoxy thermosets with polystyrene‐block‐polybutadiene‐block‐ polystyrene triblock copolymer via formation of nanostructures

Abstract:In this contribution, we reported to utilize polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (PS-b-PB-b-PS), a commercial triblock copolymer to toughen epoxy thermosets. First, a PS-b-PB-b-PS triblock copolymer was chemically modified with hydroboration-oxidation reaction, with which the midblock was hydroxylated whereas the endblocks remained unaffected. It was found that the degree of hydroxylation was well controlled. One of the hydroxylated PS-b-PB-b-PS samples was then used as the macromolecular initiator to synthesize a poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-grafted PS-b-PB-b-PS via the ring-opening polymerization. It was found that the PS-b-PB-b-PS with poly(epsilon-caprolactone) grafts can be successfully employed to nanostructure epoxy thermosets; the "core-shell" microdomains composed of PB and PS were generated in the nanostructured thermosets. Abstract:The bisphenol A dicyanate resins( CE) were modified by epoxy-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile( ETBN) to improve their toughness. The chemical structure of the CE/ETBN blends was investigated by FT-IR and then the mechanical properties tests were performed. Finally,the relationship between the structure and mechanical properties was established. And the microstructure and mechanical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy( SEM). The results showed an excellent toughening effect of ETBN on CE resin. The flexural strength of CE-18 blend was 148 MPa,and the impact strength of the CE-25 blend were 35. 07 kJ /m2 and 1. 32MPa·m1 /2,respectively. SEM results showed that the ETBN as a dispersed phase was evenly distributed in the CE resin matrix,and had a good toughening effect. The CE /ETBN blends system possessed good water resistance with water absorption rate lower than 0. 9% after 96 hours in boiling water.

Abstract:In this study, a novel hyperbranched benzoxazine (HB-PED230) was synthesized from the reaction of Jeffamine D230, 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane and paraformaldehyde through the simple one-step Mannich condensation reaction. The characteristic structure of oxazine ring in HB-PED230 was confirmed by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR and the corresponding degree of branching (DB) was calculated to be 0.51. The effects of HB-PED230 on the copolymerization behavior, thermal stability and mechanical properties of epoxy resin were studied. Compared with the neat epoxy resin, the flexural modulus of modified thermosets decreased obviously by increasing the amount of HB-PED230, indicating that the HB-PED230 had plasticization effect on epoxy resin and reduced its brittleness. Simultaneously, the flexural strength of copolymer was enhanced. More importantly, the impact strength of modified thermoset with the incorporation of 12 wt% HB-PED230 was improved by 247.4%, implying the great improvement of toughness for epoxy resin. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imagines showed that no phase separation appeared in the thermosets, also revealing the evidence of increased toughness after addition of HB-PED230.

Abstract:In this work, this study aimed to overcome the inherent disadvantage of low thermal stability and brittleness of epoxy resins. A novel modifiers containing alkynyl‐ and allyla‐ groups, (E)‐1‐(4‐(allyloxy)‐3‐methoxyphenyl)‐N‐(3‐ethynylphenyl)methanimine (MNEM) was prepared and confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and selected to improve the thermal stability and toughness of bisphenol A‐type epoxy resin (E51). The blend resins were produced by blending with different contents of MNEM into E51 resin, named E‐MNEM resins. Meanwhile, the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and micromorphology of E‐MNEM blends were analyzed in details. It was found that the thermal stability of E‐MNEM resins was improved by increasing the proportion of MNEM. Compared with E‐0MNEM resin, when the MNEM concentration reached 40 wt%, the char yield (Yc) increased from 14.95 to 29.62%, reflecting a 98.1% improvement. In addition, an appropriate concentration of MNEM could be conductive to improving the mechanical properties. An improvement of 25.5 and 7.1% in elongation and tensile strength along with the maximum value of 17.6 kJ/m2 for the impact strength was achieved by the cured E‐MNEM resins containing 20 wt% of MNEM. Finally, the fracture surface morphology of the E‐MNEM resins was analyzed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Abstract:A blend modification system was prepared through using alicyclic epoxy resin to modify bisphe-nol A epoxy resin, and its mechanical properties, thermal properties, and electrical properties were ana-lyzed by TGA, DMA, and SEM. The results indicate that the addition of alicyclic epoxy resin could improve the flexural strength, impact strength, heat resistance, arc resistance, and tracking resistance of the system. When the addition amount of alicyclic epoxy resin is 10 phr, the system has the best mechan-ical properties. The flexural strength increases by 10%, the tensile strength increases by 6.67%, and the impact strength increases by 4.35%.

Abstract:In this study, we enhanced the toughness of epoxy resin by blending it with the diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide–b–ε-caprolactone) (PEO-b-PCL) with a benzoxazine monomer (PA-OH) as the thermal curing agent. After thermal curing, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that intermolecular hydrogen bonding existed between the OH units of the epoxy–benzoxazine copolymer and the C–O–C (C=O) units of the PEO (PCL) segment. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the glass transition temperature and storage modulus of the epoxy–benzoxazine matrix decreased significantly upon increasing the concentration of PEO-b-PCL. The Kwei equation predicted a positive value of q, consistent with intermolecular hydrogen bonding in this epoxy–benzoxazine/PEO-b-PCL blend system. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a wormlike structure with a high aspect ratio for PEO-b-PCL as the dispersed phase in the epoxy–benzoxazine matrix; this structure was responsible for the improved toughness.

Abstract:Poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile)-block-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) triblock copolymer was synthesized via the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone with dihydroxyl-terminated butadiene-co-acrylonitrile random copolymer. The amphiphilic block copolymer was used to toughen epoxy thermosets via the formation of nanostructures. The morphology of the thermosets was investigated by microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. It means of atomic force. was judged that the formation of the nanostructures in the thermosets follows the mechanism of reaction-induced microphase separation. The thermal and mechanical properties of the nanostructured thermosets were compared to those of the ternary blends composed of epoxy, poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) with the identical content of the modifiers. It is noted that at the same composition the nanostructured thermosets displayed higher glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) than the ternary blends, which was evidenced by dynamic mechanical analysis. The fracture toughness of the thermosets was evaluated in terms of the measurement of critical stress field intensity factor (K-1C). it is noted that at the identical composition the nanostructured blends significantly displayed higher fracture toughness than the ternary blends. In addition, the K-1C of the nanostructured thermosets attained the maximum with the content of the modifier less than their counterpart of ternary blending. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this paper, the strategy to achieve high fracture toughness and impact strength of epoxy blends by introducing a new family of reactive block copolymer (RBCP), poly[styrene-alt-(maleic anhydride)]-block-polystyrene-block-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-polystyrene, with different reactivity is reported. Inclusions size of RBCP in cured blends was controlled from nanometer to micrometer by simply adjusting the fraction of reactive block in RBCP. The systematical study on the structure–property relationship revealed that the thermal and mechanical properties of modified blends strongly depend on inclusion size. The results suggested that blends containing nano inclusions of RBCP were more sensitive to test rates. And blends containing sub-micron inclusions showed substantially increased toughness in SENB measurements and IZOD impact tests without loss in Tg. The findings of this work provide an insight on developing toughened epoxy thermosets utilized for both high and low fracture rates via innovative reactive blending.
Mixed Hyperbranched Poly(aryl Ether Ketone) Results in High Toughness and Excellent Thermal Resistance in Epoxy Resin

Abstract:Epoxy resins are well used in many fields, but their problem of poor toughness restricts the further expansion of their applications. Facing this problem, this study successfully prepared high toughness epoxy resins using hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched poly(aryl ether ketone) (HBPAEK-OH) as a toughening agent. Firstly, HBPAEK-OH was synthesized based on molecular structure design, combined with the optimized conditions of heat resistance and solubility. Then HBPAEK-OH was mixed with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) to prepare a series of epoxy resins (HBP/DGEBA-n) with superior thermal properties, whose glass transition temperature (Tg) can reach 113.9 degrees C, which is about 38 degrees C higher than that of HBP/DGEBA-0. The tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and elongation at break of HBP/DGEBA-n showed a tendency to increase and then decrease with the increase of HBPAEK-OH content, and the highest values reached 86.43 MPa, 128.50 MPa, 57.03 kJ/m2, and 7.15 %, respectively. Among them, the impact strength and elongation at break increased by 179.3 % and 87.2 %, indicating that the toughness of HBP/DGEBA-n was significantly improved. This study explores a new method for toughening epoxy resins, which improves their toughness and heat-resistant properties and provides new possibilities for their expansion in different applications.
Enhancing the Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Epoxy Resin via Blending with Thermoplastic Polysulfone

Abstract:Efficient enhancement of the toughness of epoxy resins has been a bottleneck for expanding their suitability for advanced applications. Here, polysulfone (PSF) was adopted to toughen and modify the epoxy. The influences of PSF on the mechanical and thermal properties of the epoxy resin were systematically studied by optical microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TG), dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMA), mechanical tests and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The dissolution experimental results showed that PSF presents a good compatibility with the epoxy resin and could be well dissolved under controlled conditions. The introduction of PSF was found to promote the curing reaction of the epoxy resin without participating in the curing reaction and changing the curing mechanism as revealed by the FT-IR and DSC studies. The mechanical properties of PSF/epoxy resin blends showed that the fracture toughness and impact strength were significantly improved, which could be attributed to the bicontinuous phase structure of PSF/epoxy blends. Representative phase structures resulted from the reaction induced phase separation process were clearly observed in the PSF/epoxy blends during the curing process of epoxy resin, which presented dispersed particles, bicontinuous and phase inverted structures with the increase of the PSF content. Our work further confirmed that the thermal stability of the PSF/epoxy blends was slightly increased compared to that of the pure epoxy resin, mainly due to the good heat resistance of the PSF component.

Abstract:A novel thermoplastic epoxy (TPE) was constructed through the solution polymerization process between diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and aniline to improve the performance of epoxy thermosets. Its cure kinetics, molecular structure, thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. Due to the similar chemical structure, the TPE exhibits excellent compatibility with DGEBA and DGEBA-based thermosets. The results of the mechanical properties of cured TPE/DGEBA composites demonstrate that the appropriate content of TPE (15 phr) can significantly improve the mechanical properties including the tensile strength, tensile fracture strain, flexural strength, flexural fracture detection and fracture toughness, which is associated with the formation of semi-IPN structure of TPE and DGEBA-based thermosets. The corresponding mechanism for enhanced properties of TPE/epoxy composites was investigated deeply by scanning electron microscope. And, the tensile and flexure modulus, glass transition temperature and thermal stability of TPE modified DGEBA based thermosets demonstrates a slightly decrease tendency with the addition of TPE, which can be attribute to the coupling effect between the uncrosslinked chain structure of TPE and the strong interaction of hydroxyl between TPE and DGEBA thermosets.

Abstract:Glycidyl methacylate functionalized acrylonitrilebutadienestyrene particles (ABS-g-GMA) prepared via an emulsion polymerization method were used to toughen poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) blends. DMA results showed PBT was partially miscible with PC and the addition of ABS-g-GMA improved the miscibility between PBT and PC. DSC tests further testified that the introduction of ABS-g-GMA improved the miscibility of PBT and PC according to the Tm depression criterion. SEM displayed a very good dispersion of ABS-g-GMA particles in the PBT/PC blends and the dispersed phase size of PC decreased due to the compatibilization effect of ABS-g-GMA. The mechanical properties showed that the addition of 10wt% ABS-g-GMA was sufficient to induce a super-tough fracture behavior to the PBT/PC blends and a notched impact strength of more than 1000J/m was achieved. The Vu-Khanh test showed that stable crack propagation took place for PBT/PC blends with the addition of ABS-g-GMA and led to ductile failure.
Toughening of Polylactide with Epoxy-Functionalized Methyl Methacrylate-Butadiene Copolymer

Abstract:Butadiene glycidyl methacrylate-functionalized-methyl methacrylate (PB-g-MG) core-shell copolymer was used to toughen poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and torque tests showed that compatibilization reactions took place between the carboxyl and/or hydroxyl groups of PBT and the epoxy groups of PB-g-MG. Phase morphology results showed that the PB-g-MG core-shell particles dispersed in the PBT matrix uniformly. The addition of PB-g-MG significantly improved the mechanical properties of PBT. The elongation at break and the impact strength increased with the increase of PB-g-MG content. SEM results showed that the shear yielding properties of the PBT matrix was the main toughening mechanism. The relationship between complex viscosity and angular frequency of the PBT/PB-g-MG blends indicated that the melt viscosity was higher than that of pure PBT.
Toughening Epoxy Resins by Liquid Crystalline Co-Polyester PET-PHB

Abstract:The toughness of the epoxy resins is modified by liquid crystalline copolyester PET-PHB.The morphologies of the fracture surface were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM).The relationships between the morphologies and mechanical properties were discussed. The results revealed that the moduli, tensile and impact strengths of the modified epoxy resins are much higher than those of the unmodified epoxy resin. The maximum values have been reached in the tensile and impact strength of the modified epoxy resins by adding PET-PHB copolyester of 10%.At the same time,an uniformly network microstructure emerged on the fracture surface of the toughened epoxy resins, which is obviously different from that of the unmodified epoxy resin. It is believed that the formation of the uniformly network microstructure resulted in the significant improvement of impact and tensile strength of the epoxy resins.
