Abstract:Financial Economics and Econometrics provides an overview of the core topics in theoretical and empirical finance, with an emphasis on applications and interpreting results. Structured in five parts, the book covers financial data and univariate models; asset returns; interest rates, yields and spreads; volatility and correlation; and corporate finance and policy. Each chapter begins with a theory in financial economics, followed by econometric methodologies which have been used to explore the theory. Abstract:This book offers an overview of state-of-the-art econometric techniques, with a special emphasis on financial econometrics. There is a major need for such techniques, since the traditional way of designing mathematical models – based on researchers’ insights – can no longer keep pace with the ever-increasing data flow. To catch up, many application areas have begun relying on data science, i.e., on techniques for extracting models from data, such as data mining, machine learning, and innovative statistics. In terms of capitalizing on data science, many application areas are way ahead of economics. To close this gap, the book provides examples of how data science techniques can be used in economics. Corresponding techniques range from almost traditional statistics to promising novel ideas such as quantum econometrics. Abstract:Financial frictions generate misallocation of resources across firms by restricting productive firms’ access to capital. This article reviews the literature that estimates the aggregate losses generated by such misallocation. The first approach relies on structural estimations: A model of firm dynamics with financial frictions is estimated and used to compare efficiency in the actual economy with a counterfactual with perfect financial markets. We argue that robustness is a central concern for this structural literature. We discuss ways to analyze robustness in structural estimation (using well-identified moments and analyzing sensitivity to moments). The second approach relies on sufficient statistics, namely formulas that measure misallocation using simple empirical statistics and that are valid for a class of models. We discuss key contributions in that space, the generality of this approach, and the conditions under which it is valid. Sufficient statistic approaches are simpler and more robust, but they come at a cost: The range of counterfactual analyses that can be explored is more limited. Abstract:AbstractWe live in a “big” world with “big” information needs and “big” economic data in the form of texts, charts, and numbers. However, although the information set that one may use to analyze a company or to make financial decisions contains both text and numbers, traditionally, theoretical and applied economic research overemphasized the importance of numbers in the decision-making process. In recent years, advances in hardware and software technologies but most importantly the development of advanced text mining and machine learning algorithms has made the efficient utilization of financial text data a reality. In this paper, we review and present several techniques used for financial text analysis and we highlight some potential problems that may arise during the implementation phase of text mining for accounting/financial applications.

Abstract:One of the most exciting recent developments in financial research is the availability of new administrative, private sector and micro-level datasets that did not exist a few years ago. The unstructured nature of many of these observations, along with the complexity of the phenomena they measure, means that many of these datasets are beyond the grasp of econometric analysis. Machine learning (ML) techniques offer the numerical power and functional flexibility needed to identify complex patterns in a high-dimensional space. However, ML is often perceived as a black box, in contrast with the transparency of econometric approaches. This article demonstrates that each analytical step of the econometric process has a homologous step in ML analyses. By clearly stating this correspondence, our goal is to facilitate and reconcile the adoption of ML techniques among econometricians.

Abstract:The global financial crisis of 2007–08 and the subsequent Great Recession have pushed many economists to acknowledge a fundamental limit in the theoretical models elaborated after the monetarist counter-revolution: these models disregard the financial system. The years following the Great Recession have thus been marked by the development of what can be called the 'Financial Frictions Approach', a theoretical approach based on the addition of the financial system to the New Keynesian DSGE model. The results of this line of research are beginning to appear also in macroeconomics textbooks. Significant examples are the publication of the seventh edition of Blanchard's textbook, and the publication of the third edition of the textbook co-authored by Blanchard, Amighini and Giavazzi. The objective of this work is twofold: (i) to show that the new model presented by Blanchard, Amighini and Giavazzi, which reflects the results of the 'Financial Frictions Approach', does not allow to elaborate a coherent explanation of the Great Recession and (ii) to present the pillars of an alternative theoretical model based on the lessons of Keynes, Schumpeter and Minsky.

Abstract:Market models constitute a significant cornerstone of empirical applications in business, industrial organization, and policymaking macroeconomics. The econometric literature proposes various estimation methods for markets in equilibrium, which entail a market-clearing structural condition, and disequilibrium, which are described based on a structural short-side rule. Nonetheless, maximum likelihood estimations of such models are computationally demanding, and software providing simple, out-of-the-box methods for estimating them is scarce. Therefore, applications rely on project-specific implementations for estimating these models, which hinders research reproducibility and result comparability. This article presents the R package markets, which provides a common interface with generic functionality simplifying the estimation of models for markets in equilibrium and disequilibrium. The package specializes in estimating demanded, supplied, and aggregated market quantities and absolute, normalized, and relative market shortages. Its functionality is exemplified via an empirical application using a classic dataset of United States credit for housing starts. Moreover, the article details the scope and design of the implementation and provides statistical measurements of the computational performance of its estimation functionality gathered via large-scale benchmarking simulations. The markets package is free software distributed under the Expat license as part of the R software ecosystem. It comprises a set of estimation and analysis tools that are not directly available from either alternative R packages or other statistical software projects.

Abstract:Bayesian econometric methods are increasingly popular in empirical macroeconomics. They have been particularly popular among macroeconomists working with Big Data (where the number of variables under study is large relative to the number of observations). This paper, which is based on a keynote address at the Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis' 2016 Money-Macro-Finance Workshop, explains why this is so. It discusses the problems that arise with conventional econometric methods and how Bayesian methods can successfully overcome them either through use of prior shrinkage or through model averaging. The discussion is kept at a relatively non-technical level, providing the main ideas underlying and motivation for the models and methods used. It begins with single-equation models (such as regression) with many explanatory variables, then moves on to multiple equation models (such as Vector Autoregressive, VAR, models) before tacking the challenge caused by parameter change (e.g. changes in VAR coefficients or volatility). It concludes with an example of how the Bayesian can address all these challenges in a large multi-country VAR involving 133 variables: 7 variables for each of 19 countries.

Abstract:The global financial crisis has forced standard macroeconomics to re-examine the plausibility of its assumptions and the adequacy of the policy prescriptions flowing from those assumptions. We believe a renewal of macroeconomic thinking and macroeconomic modeling is possible by recognizing that our economies should be analyzed as complex adaptive systems. A coherent and exhaustive representation of the inter-linkages between the real and financial sides of the economy is vital as well. We propose a macroeconomic framework based on a novel combination of the Agent Based and Stock Flow Consistent approaches. This paper presents a benchmark model for this innovative approach. Our model depicts an economy with capital and credit in which different types of agents locally interact on different markets. We provide a detailed representation of individual agents’ balance sheets, ensuring the model accounting consistency at the micro, meso, and macro levels. We analyze the properties of our simulated economy under different configurations of agent heuristics, focusing in particular on the role of credit and investment. We explain in detail the logic followed to calibrate and validate the model. Results show that our benchmark model is able to reproduce many stylized facts observed in real world, thus representing a good starting point to test -- in the next works -- different economic policies and institutional setups. Finally, the relatively simple and flexible structure of the model opens up many possibilities for development of the framework along different lines, thus providing a fertile soil for new applications.

MicroEcoTools: an R package for comprehensive theoretical microbial ecology analysis

Abstract:Ecological theory aids in understanding how disturbances affect ecosystems. However, experimental data are often complex, with multiple post-disturbance theories potentially applying simultaneously to the same ecosystem. This emphasizes the need for tools to experimentally test these theoretical predictions. We introduce MicroEcoTools, an R package designed to test ecological framework predictions using microbial community data. It assesses microbial diversity and evaluates the relative impacts of stochastic and deterministic assembly mechanisms through a taxa-based null model approach for replicated designs. Specifically, the package allows application of Grime's trait-based life-history categories-competitor, stress-tolerant, and ruderal (CSR)-to taxa, functional traits, and ecosystem functions within microbial communities. MicroEcoTools also includes relevant statistical tests, numeric simulations, and publicly available datasets for demonstration. In conclusion, MicroEcoTools facilitates the application of ecological frameworks, including community assembly mechanisms, diversity analysis, and life-history strategies, to microbial ecosystems under disturbance.
